I have been searching high and low for an app that would allow me to use my phone as a mouse/trackpad and remote keyboard for the AFTV and nothing out there seemed to do the job correctly. None of the bluetooth based apps would work as I could not pair my Nexus 5 with the Fire TV, and almost all of the WiFi remote control apps are made for controlling Windows PC's. The few Android VNC options out there are spotty at best.
Finally I found Limitless Remote (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dh.ControlPad.main) an admittedly VERY ugly app with ads that cannot be removed (there is no paid ad-free version). However, this app WORKS. When first connecting to the AFTV you get a menu of all apps loaded on the AFTV and you can then launch them from your phone. You can then use the menu along the bottom of the app to put your phone into mouse, keyboard, gamepad, or the tradition 4-way D-pad remote layout. So far this has worked for everything I need, but...ITS UGLY AS SIN.
Has anyone found something with similar functionality that looks good while doing the job and has no ads? Or is this it? If this is it, then I thought I would at least spread the word about this app since I have not found anything else that fits the bill.
App works really well and was responding to commands pretty fine, mouse movement was smooth. Doesn't look good but gets the job done pretty well. Thanks for sharing!
Just to mention, you need to install a server app on the fire tv and client app on the device from where you want to control. Both are free. I didn't see any ads, may be because I have AdAway on both FTV as well as my phone.
Glad it works for you too. I might have to try Adaway.

This is the one I've just starting using. Need to be rooted to have mouse availability too. Can use my ipad/iphone as the mouse and keyboard. Not ugly either!
That was one of the ones I tried. Don't remember what it was, but something wasn't right about it. I'll try again tomorrow.

I've been using droidmote, and it works well. But I can't seem to get the center button to work when in d-pad mode. The center button does nothing when it should act like a select button.

Yep I had the same problem with droidmote.
If i remember correctly, airkeyboardapp requires a wifi connection. I am hard wired and it would not detect my network connection so that was also out as an option. Its not worth giving up a hard wired connection for. I did try a couple apps that spoof a wifi connection and they didn't work.
So far for me Limitless Remote is the only one that does the job.

Not a problem, it works great. I can now install apps that I would normally avoid, such as hbogo, since it needs a mouse to operate.
I would love to have this functionality but i'm having trouble installing the service app on the AFTV. when I push it via ADB i get the error 'file already exists" the file name is 'service.apk' did you change the name? or am i doing something else wrong?
thx
You don't have to push it. Just adb install /path/to/the/apk.apk

thanks for the recommendation for droidmote. Some of the better three bucks I've spent lately I have a keyboard for when text entry is absolutely needed, but it's very nice to be able to use the tablet as a remote that already controls the tv, amp and dvd player.

Got it. that worked. thx
Now I'm getting another strange behavior. Installed the server on the FT and the app on my GS5. everything seems to work fine except when i use the touch pad function I can move the mouse pointer but tapping does nothing, so i can't click on anything. weird. did i miss something?
Are you using limitless or droidmote? I think I had that problem once before. Don't remember what I did (if anything) to fix it. Tried rebooting the FTV?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'm using Limitless Remote. I have rebooted the FTV a few time. I guess i'll keep playing with it. maybe delete the server off the FTV and add it back. frustrating
Okay, let me make sure I get it...
For droidmote...
1. Buy the server app, and install it on the phone.
2. Copy the apk and transfer it to my Mac which has the ADK installed.
3. Sideload to the FireTV with adb install
4. Install the droidmote client on the devices I want.
5. Profit?
Any hope of an iOS version of droidmote for my wife who simply refuses to see the wisdom of Android?

Exactly why would you want to use a mouse? For small, incremental things that your fingers don't feel like they're precise enough? Just curious, not trying to troll.

Haven't gotten my Xoom yet; but wouldn't the arrow keys accomplish this to some extent? Obviously can't play touch games and things, but could navigate around apps and things. Curious how well the arrow keys do work for anyone who has done this? Love the idea of hooking up to my TV for youtube, music, etc...
I tried my presentation keyboard today and the touchpad did not work. I would not take this as an absolute that a bluetooth mouse will not work but it does not look like it from here. It is possible that a dedicated BT mouse will work where a keyboard mouse combination device did not.

Same problem I have with my Logitech DiNovo mouse... Actually tried this this morning, just for giggles. Pairs but won't connect. My same DiNovo keyboard pairs and works perfectly. I think it doesn't connect because it doesn't really know what to do with a mouse, I doubt Google built in that functionality.
I think someone would have to write an app that overlays the actual cursor - as there is no cursor built-in. However, I am running 1.7 on my Asus netbook - installed with no issues, and it recognizes and uses the mouse - built-in mousepad, usb mouse, and bt mouse. So the functionality is there, I guess Motorola never thought to implement it. Perhaps somebody more familiar with the OS could enable this?

Currently what I do with my laptop is hook it up via the VGA cable to my TV and use my iPhone and the handy Logitech Air Mouse app to control what's going on.
So same as a Bluetooth touchpad, I guess. I'm sure we'll figure something out
I paired a Razor Orochi to it, and its showing as a little mouse icon instead of the keyboard icon, so someone was thinking about it.
Hope someone can get this working, I enjoy hooking my SGS up to the tele and using my BT keyboard and mouse with it, so this functionality is quite important to me.
Wouldn't the Xoom need drivers associated with the mouse? Or maybe the bluetooth connection suffices...
we might need to take a look at the Viewsonic G-Tablet cursor code. Has a nice cursor when using a usb or bluetooth mouse. Not sure how or anything, programing is not my specialty. My biggest flaw lol

I would love to see this working, having a mouse would make it much less awkward when used as a laptop replacement for work.
I don't really understand why this isn't built in from the get go, hopefully Google being the update and improve fanatics they are, will add in this functionality officially. But in the meantime, would love to see this working with some fanangling
Dex
Agree completely. We have a keyboard, why not a mouse. Hopefully it's in the kernel somewhere waiting to be enabled. I don't imagine drivers would be a problem once the OS recognizes it.
I would love to see this working as well! We have USB and HDMI out, why not have this. It would be like a nice little cloud-based work or browsing terminal in the bedroom instead of breaking out a laptop or having a net-top in there... Good for road warriors too.
I don't understand why mouse functions would work in pre-Honeycomb versions of the OS and it would be left out now. That would be ridiculous.
Hey guys - Wanted to see if anyone out there has used a 'keynote remote' app for Android. I'm going to be running a presentation on my wife's Mac, but neither of us have an iPhone, and the clicker we're going to be using is not that great.
I know some of the other guys who use it (and have iPhones) have keynote remotes on their phones, and I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for apps I could try. A few of them out there cost some $$, and I have no problem with that, but I know we only get 15 minutes to test apps out now, and that may not be enough time.
I'd like to have the link done by bluetooth so I don't have to rely on wifi if possible. Anyone out there know about this incredibly specific request?
I know you're not wanting wifi, but it's what I use at home to control my media PC: Desktop Remote. Free and works flawlessly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if it works on Macs, specifically for Keynote? That's the application I'm going to be using it for, so if it only works for PCs, I won't be able to use it.
I'll look it up on the market and check it out.
Basically, I'm looking to control my Galaxy Note 4 from my PC with a keyboard and mouse. Can this be done somehow over my WiFi? I read about an app called mobizen, but I have no clue how it works. Anyone familiar with this? What I want to do, is basically:
Drag files in and out of my phone to/from PC
Use my PC's keyboard and mouse to do things like texting or typing in messages into my phone with other apps
Try Samsung SideSync.

You might also try Mobizen. I use that with my Note 2.

By any chance, when attempting to install Mobizen on your PC, did you get a "File Copy Error!!" when first launching Mobizen (which runs an auto update that causes this message)?
That said, Mobizen isn't currently an option since it doesn't even run on my PC. Apparently, I'm not the only one to have this problem with it.
Any other suggestions on remote connection to phone?
I use Team Viewer to control all of my Android devices. Unlike the PC to PC connection, however, the phone must "accept" the remote control request each time.
I second Team Viewer, it's free and fast and easy.
I mostly use it the other way around to control my PC but it works great either way!

Team Viewer from what I understand, won't cut the mustard. For a phone, it only goes from phone to PC, thus putting your PC on your phone, correct? You can't "Call" your phone via Teamspeak. Correct me if I'm wrong. Otherwise, that would be nice if it did do that.
You would need TeamViewer's Quick Support app plus the Samsung module. Both can be found in the Play Store.
I would second SideSync. It works really well and has a keyboard and mouse only option.

After seeing this thread, I found one in my area on sale for about 12 bucks. After it charges, I will try it out on the fire stick, and come back and report. The controller has a built in mouse function that you activate with the flip of a switch. So, if the fire tv stick can pick up the controller on bluetooth, then in theory it might work. I'll be back later with findings.

Yes, a Gamestop up the road from me had two left. I have the setting.apk succesfully installed as well, so as soon as the thing charges up, I will give it a go. And if it does not work...oh well, just 12 bucks. I will say that I have read reports of a few wireless bluetooth mouses working with the setting.apk as well. Sadly, I do not know the brands, and I have tried a few mouse apps on my android phone via bluetooth, but since they are asking for a pin, it does not seem to work. Any bluetooth device that asks for a pin it seems, is destined to fail.

Yeah... It's hit and miss.. Make sure you do charge it at least 2-3 hours.. I think 2 hours is the recommended time.. Guess you can test it out with stock FW on the remote. But there is a way to convert all Nyko remotes to the FireTV FW. Called to put a couple aside. Just in case they work..
Also please let us know how the controller feels for playing games. I know it won't be as good as any console controllers but for $13 as long as they don't break down to quickly they should be fine..

The Nyko gamepad mouse function works on the Fire TV stick. Do not try and connect the controller through the Fire TV stick settings, do it through the setting menu from the setting.apk. Make sure the controller is on (had it set to gamepad mode), then click the option that allows you to search for bluetooth compatible devices under bluetooth settings. It should pick it up pretty easily. Once it is selected and setup, change the gamepad to mouse mode, and then you can use the apps that require the touch/mouse function. Right now, I am running a sideloaded directtv app.
After I load a game, I'll come back with more intel, but the Nyko gamepad works like a charm so far.

Interesting app... You just have to know your FTV's IP to tell them apart. The app needs more complete translation of it. Odd how it installs itself on the FTV.. But easy... The go back button doesn't seem to work on most instances. Just ended hitting home. Since I do have root on my FTV's.. It did kept asking me to grant it SuperSU status.. Not sure why.. I Denied it... Probably will still go with the Nyko Game Pad Pro but this is a good backup.. But I don't trust it just yet... Uninstalled it for now...

Alright, as far as I can tell, it is impossible to root the fire tv stick as of yet. Hopefully someone comes up with a way. I'll just drop some instructions from the beginning and add a few resources for people starting fresh. I uploaded the settings.apk I used, so be sure to grab that from this post. Before I get too far into this, everything I have done is with a stock Fire TV stick and Nyko gamepad controller straight out of the box, and anything done to the fire stick is listed below.
On the fire tv stick, make sure under settings that the adb debugging and allowing outside apps are enabled. As for getting the settings.apk to the stick itself, just follow the instructions found here: sideloadfiretv.com/sideload-apps-amazon-fire-tv-windows/
(Being a new user, I cannot link that, so I apologize for the inconvenience)
Once that is loaded, go to Settings>Applications>Manage Installed Applications. Find the settings app, launch it, and go to the bluetooth menu option. Click it, and up at the top right hand corner, you will see an option that will allow you to search for bluetooth devices. Make sure that the nyko remote is charged, turned on, and set in the gamepad function before clicking that option. Once you have the gamepad set up, click the option to search for bluetooth devices, it may take a minute. Once it picks it up, enable it in the menu, and you should be good to go.
I did not change any functions on the controller itself. This is the stock Nyko gamepad controller straight out of the box. You will be able to switch it back and forth between the controller and mouse functions, and both work. The only thing I have found is that when entering user names and passwords on apps, keep the stick remote next to you, as it is generally easier to use that to enter the names/passwords/etc. I have successfully navigated and watched stuff from the DirecTv, Funimation (though this app is still a little funky to navigate, it works), and Xfinity sideloaded apps.
As far as games, my kids are playing Sonic 2 with the controller currently, and there are no issues with it. It works great. Just remember to turn it on and off when using it and not using it, since it has a chargeable battery.
Sorry Y314K, I am sure that this is far more more information that you originally wanted/needed, but I figured I better start from the beginning, so newbies reading this will have all the tools they need to make it work.
Hope this helps!

Not without root.
I bought one of those Nyko tablet game pads for mine, the Stick natively supports the Nyko game pad, and it has a mouse mode.

I use Yatse to control XBMC with no issues on my s3 Samsung, Remote IME seems to work for everything else.
I am unsure of the mouse, I can use my Logitech keyboard for full control and browser work though. hope this helps

Not without root.
I bought one of those Nyko tablet game pads for mine, the Stick natively supports the Nyko game pad, and it has a mouse mode.

Picked two is them up in store for 12.97 each. They don't have them up front, they keep them in the back so you have to ask for them.

Not true anymore. Try this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkremote.client.en
Has some translation issues (seems to be a Chinese app). Install on your phone and when you open it and connect it will automatically install the client on your ftv (or at least it did on my rooted box with play store access). Seems to have both navigation controls and mouse mode. Worked well for me in my ftv (have not tried on ftv sticks yet, mine won't be here until Tuesday).

I'm pretty weary of Chinese apps.
How are you using remote ime? This is only thing i could find in under that name. http://www.mygica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9&p=9
Tried scanning and manually entering ip and nothing.
Don't know about the Chinese app, doesn't look like it has a touchpad feature for using it as a pointer for touch controls that fire stick remote can't do. Joystick an option even though the stick isn't a game machine. Wantd to use something i already have if possible.
I haven't had any luck connecting anything Bluetooth. Monoprice Bluetooth headphones and sound brick show as detected but never play audio. Mouse detects but doesn't pair.
That Nyko gamepad works perfectly (as a gamepad and as a mouse), and if you go to the game controllers part of Settings you'll see Amazon mentions Nyko specifically, that controller is fully supported from the factory on the Fire Stick.

The Chinese app definitely can function as a mouse. Press the square in the upper right corner and select mouse module.

Keep in mind I'm talking about the stick, there is no root for it yet. At least not a software root. If I had root, could install droidmote.

I get my fire TV sticks tonight so I will be testing it out. On my fire TV I didn't have to do anything but open the app on my phone and it displayed the ip of my ftv. When I selected it it installed the server automatically on the ftv.

Has anyone been able to get mouse clicks to work with WKremote, the chinese app, on the Fire TV Stick? I have no problem getting a mouse pointer and I'm able to move it around, but not able to click on anything. I've tried placing the pointer on the object i want to click on, then switching to gesture mode but that doesn't seem to work either.
I'm trying to use it on the Time Warner app and I need to be able to click different options. I also tried to click on something in XBMC with no luck.
Any suggestions?

Works fine for me. Just tap the screen while in mouse mode. I think the fire can be somewhat finicky on what you can click on when in the amazon interface

Thanks. I figured thats how it should be working, but it wasn't for me. I'll try reinstalling it again to see if that does anything.
Is there an app for iOS folks. Dont see Wukong ?
Issues connecting to FireTV Stick
Anyone else having problems connecting to the FireTV Stick. When I open up the app it will search and see the FireTV and shows the correct IP, when I click it to connect it shows fail to initialize and brings me to some help section ( that clearly I do not understand)
Any info would be nice, perhaps there is an issue with the router I am using, uPnP is disabled or something? I just received my new router recently belkin ac1200 and I am not sure if that is the cause.
The Wukon app works for me on the FireTV Stick, but it's super slow. Mouse is jumpy, and inputs are sometimes delayed by 2-3 seconds.
I didn't install anything on the stick to support it, it just worked.
I am interested in how it works more if anyone has any English resources. Pretty cool how it puts up a notification on the FireTV Stick.
