I just did it on mine. Returning to Costco.
1) Power off the device.
2) Press 'Home' , "Up-Volume", and "Power" buttons at the same time.
3) Once you see samsung logo, release the buttons. This will load the Recovery Menu.
4) Once here (using volume button) move down to "wipe data/factory reset" and press the "Power" button.
5) (Using volume button) move down to the "Yes -- delete all user data" and press the "Power" button.
This will do a hard reset of the device.
Doing a reset of the device through the Android OS will only change the index that points to files... but not erase the files. This means that it could be recovered by a malicious person.

Hi,
Pressing Vol Down + Power is only for checking Hard_SPL Version or flashing device (in case of Flashing Failure) using CustomRUU.
For Flashing from Internal Storage :
0) Copy diamimg.nbh in internal storage.
1) reset your device and within 3~4 seconds push together the Vol_Down + Back buttons (the one on the right above the hangup button) and keep pressed until the boot loader appears .as soon as you see the boot-loader you can release those buttons
2) a very simple gray menu will appear asking you what to do, press the Power Button to perform the ROM/Radio upgrade
3) while the upgrade runs be patient and don't press any button or reset the device , when finished a message "UPDATE SUCCESS" will appear, now you can safely reset your device.
4) A Hard Reset is always recommended after flashing a rom.you can perform a hard reset after flash : After reset press Vol_Down + Circle button, then when you see another simple gray menu choose Vol_Up to confirm format.
Good Luck!

Special Thanks. I got it and upgrading now.

Hangs when trying power off.

My friend's Desire can't reboot/power off properly it just hangs and he have to remove the battery.
I think it's because the app/s he installed.
But how do I find the problem?
Uninstall them one at a time?
Or is there another way?
If all fails can I do a hard reset, and how?
The phone is still unrooted.
Hi there you can do a hard reset by following these instructions
1.Turn the power off. If your HTC Desire is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
2.Hold the Volume Down button
3.Press and release the Power button
4.You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5.Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
6.Press and release the Power button
7.Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC Desire. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.
hope this helps
Thanks, I forgot about the "Clear Storage" for some reason.

To get to the into recovery menu for the m975:
1: Hold Volume Down & Power for 10 seconds ( screen will go black ).
2: Hold Volume Up, the recovery menu should pop up after 6 to 7 seconds.
From there you will see all your options ( wipe data/factory reset is your third option ) , use Volume Up/Down to move & Power to select.

boot to recovery, that's where it will take you
I'm seriously not trying to be a ****, but that's pretty useless information. Obviously a factory reset will remove the pattern or password, along with everything else. That would be a last-ditch option... when everything else fails, this will, without a doubt work. Also, to boot into recovery just hold power + volume up. No need to hold the home button, stand on your head, and do a split while singing Hotel California just to enter recovery.
Just FYI, by typing "remove pattern unlock android site:forum.xda-developers.com" in Google, it pulls up many various techniques of doing the same thing WITHOUT losing data.

My technique to boot into recovery / download mode:
1. Start with device all the way off.
2. Press and hold the volume down or volume up button as desired.
3. THEN Press and hold the power button until the system begins showing signs of life. Samsung logo or whatever. Release power button but keep holding volume button without fail.
4. When you get to recovery or download mode, release volume key.
If that doesn't work, consider you may have a button hardware failure or some serious other fault.
I used to have lots of trouble getting into recovery or download mode, because I tried to press power and volume keys at same time. That resulted in sporadic operation. Doing it as I describe above, starting with volume key, works every time.

You don't need to hold volume up/down before pressing power, but it doesn't hurt. You can hold the power button until the device vibrates and let off. As soon as you feel the vibration, you can then switch to holding volume up until you see the blue text in the upper-left hand corner that says "Recovery booting." Once you see that blue text you can release the volume key and you will enter recovery mode every single time. Same way with download mode. Basically, as long as you're holding whichever volume button you want when the Galaxy S4 splash screen pops up, you will enter the corresponding mode. Also, there is no real need to start from the device being powered off completely. You can actually use your basic power menu (or advanced, depending on the ROM) and select Reboot/Restart and then hold the correct volume key when the screen powers off; although with an advanced power menu the option to boot to either is obviously both there and foolproof
I have never understood why people make entering download/recovery mode a lot more complicated than it actually is... I've never had trouble getting into download or recovery mode because it's not hard at all.

Or flash CWM, pull the /data/system/gesture.key file and open it with Revskills > Cryptoanalysis > Bruteforce android pattern lock (for pattern) - pull /data/system/password.key and /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db and open them with Revskills > Cryptoanalysis > Bruteforce android passcode
You will just need to find a Revskills.zip with key latest version is 2.08.6
can u elaborate on this
When you can't boot into recovery you can wipe your phone with the computer using ODIN
If the person can boot the phone into recovery and perform a factory wipe, Odin is not required.
