I found the cheapest Desire in the UK is at 3uk/payg - 350 Sterling
...but apparently it comes locked to the 3 network, so, before I buy I thought I'd ask:
Noob Questions:
Will rooting take care of unlocking/make it SIM Free? What about rooting AND changing the ROM? (MUST the ROM be replaced when rooting?)
Is there a way to install a stock ROM? (the new ROMs look great but are still early builds - I think the best is yet to come and would rather wait, for now)
If, as promised, the Desire gets an OTA update to support apps2SD and/or divX, etc in the future, will I have to wait for a custom ROM based on the update because I rooted the device?
(Ops, if this should be in the dev forum, feel free to move it)
Rooting should unlock it - perhaps others can step in to ensure that. The last step in the root process is installing a rooted ROM. Paul's default ROM that gets flashed in that step is nothing but the stock Desire ROM (the one from HTC direct) modded to allow root. Sounds like that's what you want.
If the Desire later gets updated and you want it, you will have to wait for HTC to come out with an official update, or (since you're rooted), you'll most likely be able to get it sooner via the rooting community. HTC has to take time and make sure everything's perfect with Sense, etc. before they release an update. The root community doesn't usually have that hold time.
If you do wait for an official ROM from HTC, there's a chance installing that after rooting will revert your root, i.e. you'll lose access to the extra fun stuff.

3's Desire's are 100% unbranned and unlocked. I've got one right here and checked it just now with an o2 sim and it worked, although I do actually use my 3 sim in it! They get them stock from HTC and bundle a SIM card pack with them - According to 3 Blog. That may well change in the future, but it was the case when I picked mine up last Sunday.

what is this extra fun stuff? apps to SD? (doesn't really affect me). What else? What am I missing. No idea of the real advantages of rooting so hoping to learn about the practical applications of rooting.
I'm receiving a new Galaxy Nexus in the mail today. I'm new to the Android world but this site has been extremely helpful in explaining the capabilitys of this OS. Since I've never used Android I don't completely understand the pros/cons to rooting my device. A lot of posts say "you have to do it to understand the benefits" or something of that nature. I understand that once you root you can change your ROM, kernel, navigate all file folders, use certain apps that require superuser access, etc. As of now, I'm not sure I'd want to do any of that. I may want to in the future when I see some limitations that could be bypassed by rooting, but for now I would like to keep the stock ROM, kernel, etc.
It's possible to keep everything stock when rooted, correct? So it would function the same as a stock device but would have the potential to be modified later. If an updated Android OS version is released, can I download and install it the same as anyone with an unrooted stock device?
Is there any disadvantage to rooting? Why would anyone NOT root their device? I'm just thinking that if I'd do it eventually, I might as well do it right now when there are no valuable files/apps/etc. that I'd have to worry about backing up.
People often root to flash aosp roms otherwise not available on htc or galaxy s phones
Aosp also in many cases gave better battery life than their skinned cousins
But on nexus phones and jelly bean I don't see much of one other than to experiment or to use addons like roms such as codename android and baked bean give

The main reason I root is for Titanium Backup. That is probably the only way to migrate apps (with data) from one device to another.
Also nandroid (Clockworkmod Recovery) backup is useful if you want to experiment with different ROMs and can restore stock and apps easily.
On a side note: Don't like CWM 6 when backup creates a huge BLOB directory structure. Not convenient to backup your backup to PC.
Backups
Free Tethering
Block ads
etc
Tethering is enabled already. Ah u probably must be talking about the us version. I have the international one.

I root for Paranoid Android and Titanium Backup. Two things I can't be without once getting used to them.
But really. Installing Titanium Backup almost feels like a necessity on Any phone to freeze/backup apps detach them from market etc.
I appreciate the responses but you guys aren't really answering my questions...

Yes you can be stock & rooted. Root by itself will not affect an OTA. The only reason to root is if YOU gain something. If your phone dose everything you want without root then there is no reason to root.

Yes u can stay stock and rooted.
If u root and take an update you will most likely loose root or you will have to unroot before u can take the update. One of the 2.
Biggest disadvantage is that it voids warranty. But no big deal if u no how to go back to stock.
People that don't root probably don't because they don't how, are scared to and/or they don't want to void that precious warranty.

1. Yes
2. Yes. Though root disappears if you update officially OTA. So then you need to re-root. If you would also unlock bootloader and install CWM you can not update OTA.
3. Umm. I guess some manufacturers claims that warranty is void when rooting. That's pretty much the only not-to reason I can think of. If rooted only and don't "use it" you won't even notice you're rooted.

It's unlocking the bootlaoder (fastbbot oem unlock) that will (not Play Store devices) wipe the device, not rooting (though the easiest way to root is to unlock the bootloader).
Ok I think its becoming more clear now.
I ordered mine unlocked from the Play Store. Does that mean the bootloader is already unlocked?
How often does an OTA come out anyway?

No, that refers to SIM unlocked, not tied to a specific carrier.

If your new to Android this is a good place to start getting acquainted with the terminoligy & procedures
Right, I know it is carrier unlocked. So a Play Store GNEX still has a locked bootloader but unlocking it does not erase your files...
If that's the case I guess there's no downside to waiting until I see a good reason to unlock and root. I was thinking that I should do this on my brand new phone so that it wouldn't have any files on it that I'd need to backup. It sounds like I wouldn't have to worry about backing up regardless.
The only reason I can think of to unlock the bootloader straight away (& it's arguably a good one) ...
If for some reason your phone won't boot into android you could fastboot boot a custom recovery & have adb access to pull files from the virtual sdcard.
Rooting is the best thing to happen to Android phones. Do it.

Yes it will. Unlocking the bootloader via fastboot oem unlock will erase /sdcard. Does not matter if you get if from the play store or not. But like you said, if the device is brand new it doesn't matter anyway.
Side note: recently an exploit is discovered that allows to gain root without unlocking the bootloader. And if you have root, you can unlock/lock the bootloader at will without losing data. Follow the link in my signature for more info.

There were numerous reports that Play Store phones did NOT wipe all data when the bootloader was unlocked, I know mine didn't

[DISCUSSION] Google Play Nexus not wiping after Bootloader Unlock
Hi
I am new to Android. I have been using blackberry for many years. I got my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE a couple of months ago.
I was just using the google play store app to download and update apps, nothing complicated
Yesterday i received a message to update my android os to version 4.3
My carrier is MTN Cyprus
So i followed the steps and it worked
But for some reason, when my phone boots, i see the logo of a different carrier! I see VODACOM instead of MTN Cyprus!
There are also vodacom applications that are useless and i cannot remove them
I have been talking with my carrier support since yesterday and searching forums and the web for a solution
So, i have a few questions:
1. My phone looks OK, everything is functional as far as i know. Will it be a problem if i just keep it like this?
2. Can i remove the unwanted stuff somehow, keeping the new android os?
3. I am reading about custom ROMS and rooting. Can i install a fresh android rom myself, replacing the current one, without waiting for my carrier to release a new update? Do i need "root access" to do that?
4. Can i install any android 4.3 on my device, or it has to be a specific version for my device?
5. If i root my device, are there any risks? is it legal?
Thanks

Probably not, apart from the apps that don't work. The question is what happens when there is next update - will it work? Hard to tell without trying....

Yes, you need ROOT and some app that can remove/freeze apps, i.e. Titanium Backup

Yes, you can install. You can either flash Official ROM from ODIN (no counter is raised) or ROOT and then flash custom ROM from recovery.

You can install ONLY 4.3 ROMs. Because you updated to 4.3 it is impossible to go back to 4.1.2 because of KNOX - and I see no reason why you would go, IMHO 4.3 is so much smother.

There are risks, always when you tweak your device. But if you spend couple of days reading here and do everything according to the instructions, it will all be OK. It is legal to ROOT, but if something happens to your phone it is a question whether Samsung will void your warranty or not. Generally Samsung hates people rooting and doesn't repair devices that are rooted (if they are able to find out). But still a lot of people root and don't care about this. If your device has some minor problem - you can unroot before sending it to service. If it fails completely - it is a gamble.
Hi
I'm new to Android relatively, I been an Apple user but switched to the Note for the stylus. Anyway, happy with the device except for the lag which I hear KitKat solves it.
However, has the UK received Kitkat yet?. If not is there a way I can upgrade for a newbie.
Also I have tons of PDFs and Comics on my external SD Card, would upgrading to Kit Kat mean I can no longer access them?.
6 threads below this one, upgrade guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2719750
Read about sd card changes and what it means to you here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...at-and-even-samsung-may-be-implementing-them/

The UK version is not available yet but we can assume it will come at some point in the next few days/weeks/months(!). Samsung are not the best at telling anyone.
The version that GldRush98 refers to is for the US. You can install it and it will work but I believe it comes with some apps that the carrier wanted delivered to the device. If you are in a hurry, go that route.
If you can wait then you can check the SamFiles website for new firmwares, if you're not sure your device is checking for you. Alternatively keep an eye on the development threads and consider a custom KitKat ROM. They are likely to be even faster as they remove the bloatware and make some tweaks to improve the experience. I'm hopeful of seeing a Cyanogenmod v11 version for this device in the not too distant future.

Thank you, I like to root but I hear it invalids your warranty, and since the note is only a month old its not something I wish to happen. Though I wish I could root it to remove all the bloatware, one thing Apple does well at least.
Still love my Note, great digital sketchbook
Yes, it's a nice machine and the SPen is very good. If you go checking for new firmware, the right site is SamMobile, not SamFiles (I keep getting that wrong). Try http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=SM-P600&pcode=0 but obviously check for your variant.
I forgot to say - rooting does trip the counter and void the warranty but you can install a custom ROM without root. So, as and when there's a ROM you want to try you could install it and if not happy go back to the stock Samsung ROM later.
Well a custom Recovery also trips the knox counter.

Ah, good point. So, damned either way
you can easily flash the USA image without tripping knox.
for the sd card, all data stay avalaible but only some "official" apps (like Myfiles) can write to sdcard. Others app can just read on it.

Would this flashing be done via ODIN and injecting the USA image into my SM-P600? Or is there another way?
I'd love to bump this thing up to Kit Kat, but I'd like to avoid setting off Knox.
I'm over in Australia, so we're still waiting for the update, if ever. I just looked into KitKat for my S4 and for some reason, Australia is the only country still using 4.3 - Who the heck knows why, but it's major BS, so I just downloaded a New Zealand 4.4.3 image and installed that, seems to have done the job and the phone still works normally.
I'm assuming if they're gonna take their sweet time with a KitKat for the S4, they're gonna take just as long with KitKat for my P600.
Yes, you can flash a Kitkat Image without tripping Knox using odin.
I do it a few days ago and, like you, I want to preserve my warranty.
My device is french and it's running usa version.

Some good app designers have already fixed the sd card access issue without you having to root. "Maps with me" for instance, great app with great support.
Hopefully others will follow.

I took the risk and flashed my AUS version with the USA version, seems to be working normally, if anything, works much more smoothly now, and I checked the ODIN screen in my tablet and it says Warranty Void: 0 which is good. It also says "Official" under the About. So everything is GO!
Finally couldn't wait any longer and Flashed USA kitkat on my UK 10.1via odin. Absolutely no problems!

Nah its much the same. It is a little bit nippier though. A little bit.

Hi folks,
I've had my Z2 stolen a few days ago and I'm going to get a Z1 compact to replace it. Sad story I know
Now I have a simple enough quesiton. The device itself comes with Android 4.3 and 16 GB of internal storage.
One thing that bothered me on Z2 was that I couldn't move the apps to the SD card, but with Android 4.3 I can.
When I get the Z1c next week I plan to root it, after taking a backup of the TA partition of course, but then I wonder will I be able to move the apps to SD storage and are there any issues with this?
It's my first 4.4 device that will be rooted, I was reluctant to root the Z2 since there was no way to backup the DRM keys, so I'm not aware of any limitations or drawbacks of upgrading to the latest version of Android.
I don't mind staying on 4.3 if that's the advice from the community
Thanks!

Should I root first, or let the phone update itself first?
And last question - is there an app or hack for KitKat to easily move applications and data to SD card?
I used to do it with Titanium Backup Pro, but I'm not sure that option exists anymore.

Theres an Xposed module to enable the old behaviour of the external Memory Access. It's called HandleExternalStorage
