Taking photo while shooting video? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can any body help? Can't seem to figure out how to take pics while recording a video. I had to result to looking through the manual (hangs head shame) it says to press the camera icon but I don't have one in video mode?
Was hoping to use this afternoon when some guys that should be cycling in France come past my neck of the woods.

There is a camerabutton on the left when taking videos, if you have chooses to see the buttons by touching the "tree dots" up in the right upper corner.

I only have the 3 dots in camera mode, as soon as I hit the video button it starts recording and the dots disappear?

Three dots just for getting the buttons to apperar, it's like two different modes. The uber simple mode with no,buttons and the normal with buttons. When you have booth camera and video button they should not go away?
I'll try to get a screen dump when,I get back home.

Has anyone confirmed that this works? Is it possible that this mode is disabled when shooting 4k video? Thanks!

There is a separate camera button that appears while recording the video. However its only available in 1080p and low, not available in UHD mode.

Not available in UHD is disappointing. Even if the pics were of a lower quality I could live with that, but to make it not available at all is odd.

Yeah, it's not available when taking 4K video. But hey ho, I usually find if I want a picture during a 4K video, I will use the snapshot feature in VLC to grab a frame from the video afterwards. The res may not be as high as 10 or 13MP, but I'm coming from a HTC One so it's still a lot better than that

Top right of the screen these should be a +/- button. Click that and a wheel will appear on the left hand side of the screen move it up and down to zoom in and out.
I think you wanted to know where the zoom function is whilst actually recording? The answer unfortunately is this is not possible
very few digital cameras include a zoom function while recording video

Yeah sorry. I thought he meant camera. Zoom on video is not possible. Probably because when you use digital zoom it decreases the resolution.
...
thanks for the replies
i wish you could zoom in and out when video recording like my older nokia phone (which is like 4 years old!!!)
i wonder why this was left out....either way, at least i know to stop "trying" to look for a zoom option whilst in the middle of video recording
You shouldn't use digital zoom, it just decreases the resolution instead of actually zooming in.

special mode in camera ?

This one review on techradar.com, talks about a special mode in the camera that takes a normal and HDR picture simultaneously. How to access that function ?
Another noteworthy camera trick Huawei has included with the Ascend P6 is a special shooting mode that, each time you press the shutter button, takes both a standard single shot and an HDR (High Dynamic Range) one simultaneously.
We're big fans of this in principle, because it means you get the benefit of HDR without having to specifically set it up - the hassle of which can leave the feature neglected by most users. HDR can often help out when there's a strong contrast between shade and light within a single picture, but it's also dependent on a steady hand and a reasonably static subject for decent results.
This special mode gives you the chance at getting those balanced HDR images with the constant fall-back of a normal image.

Turn on HDR in the camera settings.
Yes I know HDR. But this review talks about a mode that takes both HDR and normal pic simultaneously and so getting 2 pictures in a single click. Unless I understood it wrong.
I remember getting 2 pictures taken simultaneously but I dont remember how I exactly achieved it

its burst mode
just hold the capture button (or volume up key), it will take pictures simultaneously, but it doesn't work on HDR mode
Burst-mode is not HDR. Burst-mode is a multi-shot of pictures in a row and hdr for high-dynamic-range-pictures. For getting a HDR picture without setting it, you need to point a subject with high contrast (house and sun/sky behind or portrait with sun/sky behind, inside rooms with light through windows etc.). When you use the "intelligence mode" for taking your picture, the camera analyzes the picture and choose them-self if it take a second picture in hdr-mode.

How do we know the screen is working in 4K mode?

I tried screenshots in Album; Video; & MX Player Pro using different codecs & 4K videos and all, but all came out in 1080p.
Not sure if it was supposed to be in 4K though.
So, how can we be sure that 4K content is being correctly?
Thanks.
The screen is 1080p by default, so if you take a screenshot, it will be a 1080p image displayed.
If there are sufficent pixels to push either in image or video format however, the device will push them up to 4K.
For example, if you find an image or video with at least 3840 × 2160 pixels, it will be shown in that resolution. View them via the Album, or Video apps (I'm not sure about third party apps).
If you do a Google image search for 4K wallpapers, you can try...
Thanks @nobnut,
But I have tried a lot of 4K content yet, even photos viewed in the album should be displayed in 4K if I'm not mistaken.
It's just I'm not sure whether the 4K kicked in or not, and would like to be sure somehow; can't rely on eyes alone.
I tested screenshots in Album, Video displaying 4K content, they all end up in 1080p.

Android 5.1 Lollipop DOES NOT support 4K natively. The system can't therefore produce 4K screenshots, and thus 1080p. The reason why it's not 2k res on the screenshots like Galaxy Note 5 is because Sony chose that the system should run on 1080p and not 2K.

Doh!
That's the problem. You are taking a screenshot in 4K mode... the screenshot is not taken in 4K resolution however, it is a 1080 screenshot, so it will obviously show as 1080.
You just have to take it on trust that 4K content is screened in 4K. You convert it back to 1080 when you take a screenshot of it though
@KbaB.BroS Thanks, I was reading about that limitation yesterday. Guess I'll need to wait for Android M! @nobnut I'm specially concerned about custom roms breaking the 4K functionality! Can't really trust 'em!
P.S.
I'm running RomAur btw, it's superb, except for some random reboots.
There's a kernel which restores DRM-tied functions as well, for unlocked bootloaders.
Your eyes may not be able to tell the difference. Basically, in album app, when you open an image, it'll be 1080p and after about 1-3 seconds, it'll crossfade into 4K. It's easier to spot with small text and on eyes.

@CLShortFuse There is no 'crossfade' with Image Enhancements off, at least on my end. Can't be sure if it's because of the switch.

Yeah, I don't know what to tell you. With or without X-Reality, you should see a change. Take a look at the sample photos by Yu Takae. The text on the bottom right should look clearer after a few seconds when 4K kicks in. When you swipe to change picture, it renders are 1080p. After a few seconds you should see things clearer.

I don't think the difference is FHD -> 4K transition, because you can clearly see the text even on a standard 1080p screen. I think the phone loads a light preview (the one used in the gallery?) and after that it loads the full image. It can be for being fast when you scroll pics. I made some tests with my old Z3 and default pictures of the Z5p.
And, btw, if you swipe between pictures it always reload like that. But if I'm in gallery it should be 4K always, no need to change the res.
Not as clear as when it switches to 4K. You don't need a second phone to test, just use another image app like Google Photos.
Take a look at this:

The way you know if 4k videos are working is to press play on the 4k video then 'pinch zoom' once and you'll see the quality (you can do this with any videos anyways)
Also the 4k logo in album in the bottom corner means the video is 4k. And the battery will drain more playing a 4k video then a normal 360p 540p 720p and 1080p video (because 4k bit rate is higher - hence more processing)

But even in Lollipop is possible to watch videos in 4K?

Google Photos does not show 1080p 60fps or 4K video?

I've noticed that any 60fps 1080p video or 4K video that I take on my Pixel XL and upload to Google Photos always shows up as plain old 1080p. Has anyone else noticed this?
I've noticed that if I download the same video in Google Drive to my machine, 60fps or 4K remains intact- but not when playing back in the browser (either in Drive or Photos).

When playing back in photos, do you adjust the quality in the bottom right? (Similar to YouTube)
Update: I see now. Even though it's got the quality options in the lower right, the options are limited to Auto are various resolutions from 1080P on down. No 4k or 60fps. Weird.

Yep very weird. I haven't seen anyone else talk about this issue either.
I am guessing that like YouTube that because the screen of the Pixel XL is 2k it doesn't give the option for 4k play back on the phone itself
That's a shame.... It should at least do the 60fps

Video Camera Question

Hello,
I just received my Xiami Mi Mix 2 last weekend. I usually use my phone to record sports games.
I noticed that 4K recording can only record up to 8 minutes and stops. I tried looking up online to get around this but seem to can't find a solution.
Oh well, I decide I'll just record at Full HD, but noticed that it would record up to 23 minutes and then continue recording in a second video. My main problem with this is after that 23 minute, there is a few second gap that is missing before the phone continues to record in the second video. Of course, merging the two video files afterwards is a hassle as well.
Anyone know of any solution to get around this so video can record continuously in Full HD without splitting up. Maybe a different camera app, etc.
My previous phone was the Huawei Honor 8 and I could record continuously over a hour with it's basic 1080p setting.
Oh yeah, when using the camera to take a picture, it always has a watermark (MIX SHOT ON MI MIX2) on the bottom left corner... how do we remove that?
Sounds like a file size limit issue. Some filesystems can't handle files that are over a determined size. I remember my old Nokia did just that.
You can remove the watermark by opening the menu (top left corner) and selecting device watermark.

Thank you. My menu was on top right corner and didn't know that existed.
Well still hoping someone on the forum knows how to get around the Full HD recording after 23 minute issue.
Have you tried installing a third party camera like open camera from the playstore? In the setting for open camera there is an option to record for an unlimited time. Hope this helps?

I saw that app but didn't download it. Wanted to see what other people are actually doing instead of relying on 3rd party app that may freeze or might be worse video quality.
