Hello all, I am a fairly new T-Mobile user and I had a few questions about the service. I am a little confused about the service that is being reported on my phone and I don't know if this is something with T-Mobile or android. When I have service I will have the traditional bars and the 4G indicator. Well I was in the store today and I never get service in here while I'm in the back of the store but up front I get 2 - 3 bars. While I was in the back of the store my phone was reporting 5 bars but no data and I am unable to text or call. When I move to the front, the bars will drop to 2 bars and I get 4G. My question is why is my phone showing 5 bars when I have no service? Also, if I did in fact have 5 bars.. shouldn't I be able to text without data? I did have Network Signal Info installed that I was using to monitor my connect but I didn't have it installed at the time because I just installed Darthstalker ROM (not the issue because it was like this on all the other roms). Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

The next time you want to check signal strength don't rely on the bars. Instead go to settings>general>about device>status your signal strength is indicated in dbm and asu. No service if I remember correctly is -115dbm.
I have attached a few screen shots of when I disabled data and tried to send a text. It looks like its getting a pretty strong signal to the celltower. I am using 8sms app.. would that have something to do with it? Thanks.
Ok just a little update. It looks like my phone is picking up a Cingular tower as shown under net operator: 310410 which is giving me such high service when I don't have any. When I connect to the T-mobile network, it shows net operator: T-mobile and the service drops to the usual level. So I am able to send txt's and make calls without data and it is a case of no service.

Precursor: I recently purchased an EVO 4G online and had it shipped up here to Canada and after some phone calls/fiddling I managed to get it onto the Telus network. I can make and receive calls and send/receive sms with no difficulties. Data seems to be working (I get the 3g icon with up and down arrows and can surf the net), and mms seem to be sending.
Which brings me to the issues at hand:
1) My 3G speeds are super weak (between 100kbit and 140kbit down and 100-600kbit up). If I stand in the same place and use my Touch Pro 2 (they both show the same number of bars) I get 800-900kbit/sec.
2) My EVO 4g -ALWAYS- says "Digital Roaming". I've updated the PRL with the latest Telus one (off the internet) as well as the one off my Touch Pro 2 but see no difference. I don't incur any roaming charges, but the phone always thinks it's roaming.
3) Last but not least, I'll often get a pop-up that says Data Call Failure Error Code 67. Sometimes I'll go for hours without seeing it, and sometimes it'll pop up every 5 minutes.
Any input/insight is welcome!

P.S. If you want tips on how to get your EVO onto Telus, drop me a PM.
I will love to have feedback, as I get the "data fail" error often while roaming...
Update: It seems that when I force my phone to use only EVDO, the Data Call Failure Error Code 67 goes away. Perhaps related?
Just following up on my own thread: It seems the Error 67 is because my 1x data login details are incorrect (a side effect of the sprint radio).
Still wondering on the other questions, anyone?
Xan, how did you get HTC Evo to work on Telus? I'm almost at the point of returning this one that I got from Texas. I have tried for 24hours to no avail.
Please help!!

I just had the same issue. Luckily I downloaded an app off the market called 2g 3g switchand it resolve several issues I had including yours. There are three options one of them is the cdma NAM switch in which you could select NAM 1, another option is to leave in automatic, and third if you have any 2g and 3g switching issues you can select hybrid. Note after switching wait probably 5 minutes and sometimes try again, also you may have to reset.
For some reason I cant post in the Dev forum in the Milestone thread...
The ROM is impressive. But I seem to be having 3G data issues.
It seems that I lose 3G service and it will not come back until I stop/start the data toggle. The status bar still shows the 3G icon, but the bars are just light grey and I do not receive email and cant browse. I can still send texts and get/make calls. I havent been able to figure out a pattern yet, but the latest occurrence happened after I came out of an area with no signal (NYC Subway). Usually service comes back automatically as Im walking up the stairs to the outside world but sometimes it never comes back until I toggle. It also happens sometimes even if I dont go into an area with no signal (at the office). After I turn off the data toggle, and turn it back on, the 3G icon comes back on the status bar and the bars turn blue again and shows up/down arrow activity.
Anyone else seeing something similar?
I'm having trouble with 3g and I have no 4g on milestone 6 as well. I went back to an older build until it the next one drops and see if it's fixed.

4G connects for me with no problem when I want to use it.
But I lost 3G data again this morning after coming out of the subway. Noticed I had emails in my inbox at work and checked my phone and 3G was stuck again.
I'm having connectivity problems on my copy of Milestone6 as well. Same 3G problems as OP, and can't connect 4G like 2ndP. As well, I'm unable to browse wifi signals, nor able to connect. :-/
I go from edge to 3g to h+(I guess it's what the rom calls 4G) but the signal bars are maybe if I'm lucky at 3. Now I would use wifi once everything is set up but call quality Sucks. I know there's wifi calling but I rather not use it. And once I'm on the sidewalk which is on the main road I get full h+ service.. My wife uses that nokia win7 phone and claims she has full service. Anything I can do to at least try to get full bars? Maybe play around with different radios?

You get 3 bars of h+? Dude stop complaining... I get zero to one.
Call quality is prolly due to a setting.. what ROM are you on?

Not really complaining nor am I saying I get 3 bars all the time. Right now I have 0 lol.. My rom is synergyrom
I'd just use a WIFI calling app.
I'm on TW (with a launcher) simply because I have ABSOLUTELY NO signal in my house, anywhere - this isn't a T-Mobile issue for me since it applies to any carrier. TW allows use of their native WIFI-calling.
I've never had an issue with the native WIFI-calling, in fact the call quality is the best I've ever experienced on a cell-phone, period.
If you don't want to go with a TW ROM, just look at other VOIP/etc calling options, pick one, set it up and do some test calls to get the settings right. The advantage of the native WIFI-calling is that you won't miss a call or message - but you can use Google Voice to get something similar from a VOIP service but it's a bit of a hassle (you have to either port your number or accept the VOIP having a different number - which in your case might be okay if you're only using it for occasional outgoing calls).
You could try different radios, it's not going to hurt anything if you do it right. Otherwise, putting a signal repeater on your roof (linked to one broadcasting inside) is an expensive, but surefire way of getting a better signal inside.
I use the factory wifi calling feature 90% of the time. Dont have issues at all. Text and mms no issues either.

I've had Background Data set on restricted on a number of apps for several months with no problem. Specifically, Play Store and a few others. Recently, I've started getting error messages when trying to launch Play Store saying that Background Data needs to be enabled. This is even when I'm on both strong network and wifi signals (and also set on network preferred). All of this is intermittent and if I re-enable background data it might - or it might not - connect. Until I reboot.
Also, (and this has nothing to do with background data restriction) when I'm in an area with strong network coverage, if I try to launch a web browser, it will often pop up with a bunch of ISP icons ( ATT, Comcast, etc.) saying that I need a wifi connection. This is outside with no neaby wifi and a strong network signal. And - my wife is standing right next to me with the same phone and none of these issues.
Phone is not rooted and no weird apps.
No problems with voice or text
Did a hard reset. Spent Waaay too many hours on the phone with Tmob. Got a new sim card.
Tmob agreed to send me a replacement but it's on like a twelve day back order.
Anyone have any ideas on what's going on with this phone? - Thanks
Anyone? Please?
