Ad blocker question - Sprint LG G2

well folks i have been a long time htc fanboy untill i got my hands on a galaxy note2. got bored with touchwiz pretty quick and moved on to my first lg phone. i am no stranger to rooting and flashing on htc or samsung but lg is new territory. just got my phone rooted and the 2 most common reasons i root is adblocking and wifi tether.
what app is recomended these days for good ad blocking? i was using adaway on my last 2 devices
also what is the preferred recovery for the lg devices? i know it is more of a personal preference for the most part but there may be some that don't play nice with certain devices.

Twrp for recovery. You should check out autorec for recovery if your already on kitkat.

[Q] Are you Stock / CWM / Rooted / Custom Rom'd?

Hi All,
Had my HOX about a week. I have rooted my previous phones, but the current state of unlocking / rooting / CWM makes me a little nervous this time round.
Losing the ability to get OTA updates, along with the issues about getting root / installing CWM / custom roms and the number of bricked phones / issues still prevalent is giving me second thoughts.
I'm curious as to how many people think the same or how many have jumped all in!
Am I being a chicken and should I wait for the process of Unlocking/Rooting/CWM/Custom Roms to stabilize, or should I man up?
I love the XDA forums and the Rom developers, but don't want to risk my brand new HOX!
Im currently stock and waiting for s-off to be done without the need for htcdev.

If YOU are confident then you unlock the bootloader and start tweaking your device. I have rooted and unlocked the device now trying out different ROM's. I for one is flash junk. So if you think you can void your warranty then go ahead have fun. Or wait until S-OFF comes. I suspect it's gonna be sooner than we think because last I heard someone is already working on it.
Staying Stock for now
Im unlooked rooted have custom rom plus touch recovery. Did everything in under half an hour. Everything works like with other phones (as far as the mass of users are concerned) but yeah you can flash everything backup and restore if anything goes wrong.. There are pleanty of instructions for windows or mac on this forum also ways for unbricking. I was worried that it was too early for this stuff yet too but everything is fine.

I'm totally with you on that. I'm hanging fire to check out the OTA and see if it brings better stability, battery etc. I will root eventually, especially if a really sound vanilla ROM comes along and I don't have to lose the camera features.
Of HOX users in my Google+ circles, I think about 50% have rooted, the remainder sticking with stock for now...
I rooted and went custom Rom mainly because I'm a lefty and reaching to the top right corner for settings and/or menu was a pain in the bum.
At least that's how I'm justifying it to my girlfriend

I will wait for a more reliable rooting and uprooting method before switching.
My biggest reasons for rooting my last two phones was:
Internal space,
Bloatware,
Latest software,
However on this device, I have plenty of space, ability to disable bloatware and up-to-date with the latest software.

i basically disabled all 3 apps. do not use them so i just disabled them. then google books i do not use and the same with google movies. everything else i left it as it is
so i would presume it would be the same with t-mobile apps mate
regarding background services i would not tinker with if i was you..only disable google apps like google plus or google messenger if you do not use them and the same goes for google books and movies if you do not use that either....anything else just leave it as it is...and disable any tmobile crap
Looks like I'm in the majority, then.
Just waiting (fingers crossed) for S-Off or some other exploit from the Revolutionary team to get things going.

Clockworkmod Recovery v6.0.2.8 v1 for Optimus G Pro

Hello everyone. This is Clockworkmod Recovery v6.0.2.8 v1 for Optimus G Pro.
As you all know, it's 2nd-init recovery. That means if your phone bricks, only lgnpst will revive your phone.
First its how-to is same as the first one with small letters on it
1. Install application that I uploaded
2. Open it and Click 2nd-init recovery
3. Click Reboot recovery to see it worked.
As you know, we cannot change boot image. That will brick your phone.
And if you want to reboot recovery by pressing button, reboot it and you will see button flickering. Than you have to click any button. Fast.
That's all. And of course, you have to have your device rooted.
Thanks to: 985hPaKicK(WHO MADE THIS RECOVERY) and wkpark(who found out the way to increase font size, see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30818456&postcount=8)

Are we supposed to get a couple fc once we press reboot recovery? Seems to work great otherwise. I just wanted to make a quick backup before I start removing bloat.

I'd not remove the bloat if I were you. If your phone boot loops, there is no way into recovery. I'd just freeze the apps using titanium or something instead.
To answer your question, I get the force closes as well.

I dunno who created this recovery but until we get a unlocked bootloader theres no way to use this if your softbrick or bootloop. The dev should look into implementing a timeout feature when you reboot your device. The moto phones have this kind of recovery with bootstrap and safestrap. We could use it until we crack this thing.

Yeah ive noticed that. Im debating exchanging mine for a s4. Not sure yet. I have to have at least some kind of aosp or custom rom - kernel.
I'm going to remain patient, but for sure if I don't see any kernels fixing the phone's ability to render live wallpaper without lag I'll be sselling mine and buying the s4 developer edition. That is, as long as it still supports the remote control feature.

Why not just get a regualr s4? Once the bootloader is unlocked you will have aosp. Thats what ill do if i exchange. To be honest ive gone through the lg forums and aside from the nexus 4 these phones dont get much if any love. Shame as this phone is great and has great potiential. Shame i only have a week and 1/2 left to exchange if i have to. I dont see the bootloader being cracked by then.

I have an LG Nitro and there have been quite a few roms (most importantly official CM support) on our forums. I even installed the ubuntu test thingy on mine. But I'll have to admit I do get jealous of some of the other phones who don't just get occasion roms but regular releases of most of them.
welcome to the lg team guy....lolllll when i bought mine last week, one of my motivation was the fact that i"m not such a "flasholic"...so since for now we can root this thing and flash rom (stock rom) with cwm...a debloated rom will follow for sure, i"m positive!!! but dam, compair to sammy on DEV side...its like running in ferrari and fall in "mini" lollll
lg just entering in the "top" device with the g pro...even if the note 2 is 6 month old...its the first phone that i saw lg putting specification beyond sammy in phablet side.....:good:

1st Android Tablet in Family; Should I root?

First off, let me start out by saying that while I'm not new to Android (had the EVO, EVO LTE, and now One for Sprint), I am new to Android tablets and the Nexus experience. My son recently cracked my wife's iPad and I decided to replace it with the new Nexus 7. It will be primarily used by her (for productivity at work) and my 2 year old son (Netflix, Youtube).
If I root my device and install a custom recovery, would I not be able to receive OTA updates just like I can't on my HTC phones? I've never owned a Nexus so I'm wondering it the stock recovery would need to be intact just as its required on my HTC phones.
Are there any advantages to rooting a tablet? I always root my phone primarily to remove bloatware, get wifi-tether and block ads, but since this is a WiFi only tablet and a Nexus device, I'm assuming there's no real bloat on the device. I guess something I can think of that will be useful would be OTG (but my wife will probably never use that now that she uses drop box).
Thanks for any inputs!
Simple answer. Yes, and put CyanogenMod on it.

The rule is if you don't know why to root, then don't.
You can unlock your bootloader first so that when you decide to root, you don't re-format your device.
Not yet. Keep it stock for a while to establish a baseline so when you have issues after it's rooted you'll have a better idea.

Absolutely not! The *only* valid reason to root is because you need to. If you ever get to that point, you will know it. Aside from slightly(slightly) better battery life, which may not even matter to you, there is no immediate overt advantage to it on a nexus tablet. Tiny things like AdAway and such are not missed by most users. And you will stop getting OTAs. Now there isn't a thing wrong with rooting, all my devices run custom ROMS cuz I like to fiddle with stuff, but even I truly do not need Root on my nexus. Just wait till you KNOW you need it, but go ahead and unlock the device so that you won't have to wipe it to root it later. Root doesn't force a wipe, but unlocking it does. Good luck!
to be honest, i root my phones for customizations and apps that require root along with tethering. I now own both the 1st and 2nd gen nexus 7 and have to say that I never felt the need to root the first and for my 12 hours having the 2nd I dont see that changing. My current device is the galaxy nexus so its not a nexus thing really, I just find the tablet nexus experience great. Keep in mind I do also have a 1st gen galaxy tab laying around which I rooted and run roms on.
This might be the first Android device I don't root. Who am I kidding, i probably will sooner or later. Just not yet.

Thanks everyone. I think I will unlock the bootloader and leave it stock for now.
With all my phones, there was always a reason to S-OFF and root to improve my user experience (I.e. sideload radios/firmware and tweak Sense), but I'll just enjoy the tablet until I get bored of it like everyone says....

Well, that's the only reason you ever need to root. And if you have all the items needed, it literally takes a minute to root it.
i dont think 4.3 needs root or a custom rom replacing it tbh:victory:
I disagree. Just leave it stock. You don't need root access. He said its a family tab. He doesn't need custom Roms. In fact that the last thing you want when you mix the wife and kids in the mix. Don't need the boy manually deleting every system file using root explorer.
Rooting is just unlocking the "admin" account so you can access system files.
Stock is fine. I would recommend unlocking and flashing a custom recovery just so you can start doing Nandroid backups. But don't root and just stay stock.
Custom Roms are great but my wife and kid don't need a few extra features to surf online or play a game.
Stay stock and live easy. If they lose interest or stop using it, then for personal use I'd say go all the way

Q: Crucial answers needed before purchase or decide to wait for Note 4

I'm coming off 2 generations of HTC phones and I'm due an upgrade with Sprint. I bypassed on the GS5 and One M8 for various reasons and the G3 seems to fit my needs but I have a few questions first.
1) Root is must. While I know the phone can be rooted, I'm worried about updates afterward. I'm fine with a stock ROM but I need to know that after I root I can still update Android, bug fixes, radios, new features. Can this be done and if so how (only a very basic description is needed, not a guide lol). I've read the the bootloader can not be unlocked so what are limitations associted with that?
2) Will Android "L" and it's ART only runtime work on this phone? If so, I guess that relates to my question #1 if I'm already rooted.
3) Actually, that's really it. The phone looks amazing and I'm ok with it "only" being a snapdragon 801 with the 805 and beyond right around the corner but I need to know that if I root, I'll be able to easily flash new updates as they become available.
Now that the phone is in the wild in the US, are there any clearer answers to my questions? Thank You.
Hi, first of all I would like to say the phone is great, it seems to get some negative comments here but since I got one I have been very happy with my first LG handset.
Ok we'll you can't get ota's after rooting, I haven't received any official updates yet so I'm not sure if we can just full uproot with supersu to get the it a again or not. But flashing a stock firmware is a pretty simple procedure and the kind folks here at xda keep us up to date with all the stock firmware so you can update and then reroot.
ART will run on this phone no problem at all however it seems android L may break root so if root is a must you may be best advised to look into you're updates before hand, which is another advantage of getting you're stock rom's at xda. Would be pretty frustrating to agree to a ota and find out you can no longer root when it's done.
But in short, root is fine on 'nearly' all he variants and flashing stock fw manually is not to much fuss.
Hope that helps you a little.

It does help a bit. Thank you but I need to have this clear in my head. With HTC, in order to update radios, you needed s-off, which was more than just root. That's what I'm hesitant about here, if I root, and want an update the g3, I have to unroot, update and re root? What if the update prevents root? I don't want to be stuck with a choice of updating or keeping root on a phone that won't be able to stay updated with the latest version and patches of software.
Really, knowing that I'll be able to root, and update firmware, radios and software throughout the life of the phone is the only thing holding me back from an LG G3 or waiting for the note 4 and a probably larger development base. I'd prefer the G3 so I hope it can be assured.

If you're into rooting and flashing custom rooms I would seriously avoid this phone and wait for note 4. Trust me when you get your hands on this phone the first thing you want to do is get rid of the lag. It seriously lags worse then S5. I'm a HTC fan and found the lag really annoying constantly using task manager which I hate doing.
So if you are a rooter and love to flash roms don't buy.

its funny you say that. I looked at the phone today. First thing I thought of when I looked at it was touchwiz. The UI just seemed very laggy. Maybe after all the hype I was just expecting a bit more. Nice phone but didn't "wow" me.

I'm coming from the s4 and s3 prior to that. I have looked into every phone and leak there is but decided the G3 was the right fit.
I got my G3 early Thursday from AT&T and I have no complaints thus far. I do notice slight lag from time to time but if you're on XDA and are use to custom slimmed down ROMs then yes, you'll kind of notice it. But trust me, it is far from a deal breaker.
Here's the thing, in a few weeks there will be numerous ROM's that have stripped away the bloatware and added a few tweaks and the lag will be non existent. I already have my phone rooted and have deleted most of the bloatware and added UI tweaks. I barely notice lag and I'm actually enjoying the UI.
This is just my 2 cents. And being loyal Samsung customer for years I can honestly say I prefer LG 's new UI over touchwiz any day.

I still have some lag but nothing that is driving me crazy by any means. The only time it lagged for me was when I used the LG health screen and I think the photo gallery. I turned off the health screen and I've always use QuickPic instead of stock gallery. Most my lag is gone but not all.

How is the Note 3 the worse phone ever? I note 3 on both VZW and AT&T using KK. Both work great. Personally much better than my Note 1 & 2. I don't have any lag. I did order the LG 3 to replace my VZW Note 3. My only complaint with the Note 3 is horrible pictures when it does its "processing" garbage.

I believe that has to do with software OIS from within the camera app options. You can turn this off

[Q] Root Questions (now and later)

Hello. I guess I have a few random questions regarding root on this device. I won't bore you with pleasantries. Here are the questions:
1) What do you think the possibility of root is with this device (bounty and all)? I mean, honestly. I'm not just talking hopefulness. Do you really think it'll get root? Root means a lot to me. I enjoy everything that you can do with it. Not having it is sort of bumming me out. It's the first Android phone I've not had root on. And I really am loving the Note 4. I don't want to go to a Nexus 6 JUST for root, ya know?
2) Is root going to go away in the future (in general)? It seems like the carriers are getting very serious about locking everything down. Android L is supposed to make it even MORE difficult to exploit vulnerabilities.
Anyway, I guess that's it. Any thoughts you have about anything I mentioned above is welcomed. I mean this question to be more of a discussion than anything else.
Thanks for all of your responses.

Well I see this question / discussion is going over well, lol.
The Galaxy line is by far the hugest force in Android, its development community is massive. That said, we're a spin off Galaxy phone, and a carrier specific. I've been with Android phones and the Galaxy line since its inception, and if nothing else, the one thing that always hold true is; we always find a way. There may be a day when OEMs and Carriers can go toe to toe with XDA, but that day won't be today. We'll have root soon.

That was an awesome response! It was like a halftime speech. I am ready to run through a brick AT&T wall!

1.) Root on KitKat will be found. It's just a matter of time and effort.
2.) Root on Android L is going to be a different story. Once this phone is upgraded to lollipop it will be impossible to root without an unlocked boot loader. This is because of the new implementation of SELinux, which will require a custom kernel in order to maintain root access during the boot of the device. At least this is what Chainfire had stated. Therefore people need to focus on the boot loader NOT root.
Also definitely don't upgrade to lollipop until the borrower has been unlocked otherwise you may be SOL.
Just my 2 cents.
