Unless you're on the OTA that includes Sense 6 and the like. Then you're still SOL until someone releases a new exploit.
is there someone working on this actively, or did those people move to the m8

Haven't seen or heard any posts abount an m7 exploit popping out of the wood work. Jcase even said he wont burn another until more than one phone needs the exploit. Rock and a hard place since towelroot works on the m8. Still hoping he'll update sunshine to support the new m7 update since that route actually makes them money.

First of all, JCase said he wouldn't burn another ROOT until another phone needs it (btw, there is a working temp root on the M7, if you're not aware), not an S-OFF or booloader unlock. and second of all:

That's exactly what I said, nigh word for word. Temp root is pointless without the ability to S-Off. Only good news comes from that twitter post.
you guys are talking about 2 different things.
ROOT VS S-OFF
although there isn't a new Root method, firewater works for S-off on Hboot 1.57

But without root, firewater doesn't work. ("SU or FU!" it says.)
So, they are pretty much interlinked, sadly.
And no, there is not a working root, temp or otherwise, for the Verizon M7 if you have the Sense 6 OTA. Towelroot does not work. WeakSauce does not work. "temproot" does not work. So, there is no way to S-off, unlock the bootloader, etc, etc. Basically, if you want to do anything such as install CM (which is what I want to do), you are S-O-L for the time being.

And yeah like you said, doesn't matter, still no way to S-off or unlock the bootloader, so ... stuck.

As the thread title, is it currently possible to root / install a custom rom on a HD running the official OTA Gingerbread release?
I have a vodafone branded HTC Desire HD (not locked to any network though) - and have recently upgrade to Gingerbread via the OTA update.
If it is possible, a link to the procedure / downloads would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance...
No, You need to downgrade first, search forum.
Yea ofcourse you can ... GingerBreak is what its called...
Here you go: LINK
Read the WHOLE POST, and make sure you have the required specifications needed to use gingerbreak.
:::I personally havent used this, but in the link i gave you, some people said that v1.2 worked with the desire hd. You can go and read some user comments (or alternatively use the "search" to search for posts with desire hd in it, and see their feedback)
Yes . But if your build version is 1.84 you'll have to downgrade before you can root / install a recovery .
Here's an easy guide for downgrading ( Even I followed it.)
[GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405.6 by jkoljo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
I did it! I was up till 4.45am last night (this morning) rooting my phone and installing custom rom (its bloody addictive aint it)
The only snag I hit, was the first step to create a gold card (I have a branded Desire HD)... I used this procedure...
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
When it came to running the following command
adb shell
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
it failed! It wasn't until I did considerable research, that someone suggested changing to mmc4... which worked.
Everything else... vision, radio etc worked perfectly.. now the proud owner of a HTC Desire HD running Android Revolution HD
You have to downgrade first
Woooot!

To be completely honest, when I first got my HD, I vowed not to root it, due to the hassle of the initial procedure, not to mention loosing the convenience of OTA updates and the potential of voiding warranty. It wasn't until I stumbled across this community by accident, did I see the sheer diversity of options / roms / hacks etc, that it became too enticing not to root

+1 for that.
I rooted my DHD just 2 days back, and i got to say, anyone using unrooted device is missing a whole bunch of cool things.
Can you sum what you do for root your device please?
And for the screen, you can use the SDK (ddms.bat) if your phone is not root
Hi I'd be very interested how toy did it on gingerbread as well. I get kinda temproot and a problem worth the sd card only? Most people think that it does not work with gingerbreak on dhd?
Rooting*the HTC Desire HD (GingerBread 2.3.3)
Hi gcarter,
I'm trying to root my HTC Desire HD after upgrading it to GingerBread.
Here is my system information.
Android*version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense version: 2.1
Baseband version: 12.54.60.2SU_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel*version: 2.6.35.10-gg0956377 [email protected]#1
Compile date: Tue Mar 29 06:10:15 CST 2001
Firmware*version: 2.36.163.13
Navigator version: WebKit/533.1
I'm able to get temporary root using GingerBreak. But I did not manage to go further. In order to help the rest of the world to get out of the @Secuflag HTC jail, I'm wrting all the steps in sites.google.com/site/arabic4android/root-htc-desire-hd[/url] and would like to come with a completely safe solution for me and the others.
If you can help me describing exactly the original ROM you were using and the commands you used, the links you visited, as much as you can, I'll be very grateful.
Thanks,
Hello guys.
I've been reading through this forum for the last week, trying to downgrade my DHD but I think I'm doing something wrong, I'm getting really pissed off right now.
I recently updated via OTA:
Baseband: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Build Number: 2.36.405.8 CL47853
I jusr can't downgrade, or root without downgrading.
Do I even have to downgrade? Since my FW is pre 2.37?
Even so, when I try to downgrade, i do the adb thingy in the cmd, everything goes well, I get the # thing at the end when I type su and so on.
But, when I turn off the phone and reboot it into a bootloader, nothing happens, no update process, it just sits there in bootloader.
Why is that?
I've made a goldcard using GoldCardTool (i used MMC0 instead of MMC1, there was no MMC2 option, just 1 and 0).
-I enabled debuging
-switched to charge only
-my phone is fully charged
-I even made a factory reset prior doing all of this
I've also tryed rooting without downgrading.
Gingerbreak puts superuser on the phone, i think I get temproot (when I type SU in terminal emulator, # appeares), but as soon as i restart the phone, superuser is removed.
Visionary+ goes to black screen, and I don't understand why since my FW is prior 2.37 (I know you can't root those yet, or downgrade).
And even if my FW is too "new", why can't i downgrade? It just won't start the update process when I reboot to bootloader.
Everything else I do in cmd with adb goes well.
Recently I had HTC Hero, and I think it took me about half an hour to root it, simple and easy (it was my first HTC), so I really want to root my DHD, but it is turning into a nightmare.
Please, what am I doing wrong?
Thank You.
EDIT: I've tryed with AMT now also, it says my FW is not compatible, that I have to run gingerbreak first, then click downgrade in AMT.
Since GB cant temproot my phone, I did it with adb, got SU, clicked Downgrade in AMT, and it reports that I have permroot Permissions, that my device's number has been set to 1.00.405.1 and that I can proceed with downgrade as normal.
So I've tryed going into cmd adb again, did the whole proces again, rebooted into bootloader and nothing! I'm going crazy now.

This is for those using the XTC clip, NOT for those using alpharev. AlphaRev users will not need to do this.

(Always check the md5sum first)
Download this file, and save it to the root (/) of your sdcard.
run
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
choose the bootloader option (if available) and allow the IMG to flash. Reboot, delete PG32IMG.zip and you are ready to use fastboot and recovery.
Attn1 built this recovery from CWR repos.
This is what it will look like when your done (actually the version number will be 0.96 until i update the zip)

I might be reading wrong, but it seems to load recovery is the same as we usually do on the Inc once S-OFF is achieved. Copy the downloaded PB31IMG to the root of the SD Card, power the phone off, then power back up with the Volume Down and Power Button Method. The phone should look for the new PB31IMG on the SD Card and start the installation automatically.
Is that correct?

if that's the case, then I can probably do it ....that is where bootloader auto-recognizes the file and asks if you want to flash update...right?
I still am a bit unsure of myself using the xtc clip though. Got spoiled with one-click root!
If I'm right, this is very similar and shouldn't be a problem at all. I'll see about ordering my clip tonight soon as I make sure it is the supported software from the seller and will get it on the way. I'm getting the one credit but believe it can be renewed. Not sure what the top off amount is. If so, you're welcome to the clip when I'm done if the other is still a ways out.

Heya. I've been browsing the forums back and forth and I wasn't able to find the specific answer I wanted for my question. Here goes:
First of all: Great program!
I have a HTC Desire running 2.2.2. I’ve been running Unrevoked 3.32.
I get the following error message ““Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?”
So, my question is. Do I have to downgrade my firmware? Or will there be a new version of Unrevoked that supports 2.2.2 any time soonish?
Or Might I in fact be doing something wrong?
I know about revolutionary.io but that doesn't seem to give me root access, which was what I really wanted.
I heard about this amazing program, for the first time, to days ago. Ever since I’ve been really curious and impatient about getting root access.
So, in your experiences eyes, what should I do?
Sincerely
Naggert
If you got revolutionary to work but didn't have root, then why not just download superuser app on the market?
I never tried installing revolutionary since the forum said I wouldn't give me root access. Thought it might cause more problems if I had to remove it again and all...
But you're saying it's possible to use revolutionary and then download "superuser" app from Android market? I mean, that would totally solve my problem :O
EDIT:
Been looking on Android market. It seems like superuser requires root access.. So that won't work, if revolutionary doesn't grant root access, right?
Revolutionary will give you s-off. You can practically do anything afterwards. Just read up before you go do the actual process.
Ah.. Yeah currently I have s-on...
Hm. I will most likely try and install revolutionary once I get back home from work. However I don't think it will work with the root access and all...
Superuser is the first app a user should install after rooting, if the rooting method didn't do it already. "Rooting" a phone allows a user to establish total control over the device, but Superuser is the app that provides the button for that control. With Superuser installed, any app that needs root privileges to run will have to ask permission, and an informative pop-up will display with the option to give it those privileges. This app is an absolute must for any of the other apps on the list to even run.

Read this. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Specifically read question #4 on the Common Problems & Questions section.
Hm.. See that makes my heart beat a little faster! Thank you so far... Think I'll spend the last half hour at work, playing with this little tool.
Thanks for your guidance so far! I will report back once my telephone is totally broken
Sure no problem. I've used unrevoked and never had the chance revolutionary so hopefully everything would run smoothly. As i've said earlier read up
Depending on how much tweaking you'll do with your phone, you'll eventually would want to s-off your phone anyway. Good luck.
I made it work!!!
Getting the revolutionary beta key was really hard! :O All those I / l and = 0 / O 's...
I tossed it [NIGHTLY][ROM][GWK74] CyanogenMod 7 for vendor Bravo (HTC Desire GSM)
So far it's running smoothly. Phone contacts have been loaded and I'm currently copying all my old music and photos back over on the phone!
Only thing tho... No android marked... Guess I have to do a little reading on this.
Cyanogenmod doesn't include the market app but you can flash it or manually copy the apk to the /system/app folder since you are s-off. Just dont forget to change the permissions.

EDIT:
Btw I made dir called: system/app/vending.apk
I think it's installed correctly

Revolutionary fixed it for me too!
Running android 2.2.2 on HTC Desire, did eveything unrevoked told me, and then found this thread, revolutionary finally gave me S-OFF
Thanks!
Okay guys, I have a question, too!
So, I bought a used Desire (though the only sigh that it was used are a couple of schratches on the covers) and I just thought a good thing would be to root it...
So, revolutionary did its thing just about 5 mins. ago... Hooray, I have S-OFF!
But how the heck do I get it rooted with the stock ROM? I don't want to lose any data on it (although the only valuable data is the Temple Run savegame)...
I only need root to repartition my SDcard so apps could be installed there...
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

..I have an S-Off T-Mobile G2 shipped from US ( I'm from India) and I need to get it rooted. I've been through many tuts on the internet but they are too complicated. The primary issue is I don't know where to start from as it is an S-OFF phone ie; it works on any sim. It would be very very helpful if anyone can help me by a step by step procedure to root this S.off phone.
On a G2 s-off means security off by hboot I don't think s-off means its unlocked to any career ....and if u have s-off go on theunlocker.com and look for perminant rooting the G2 using visionary and since u say u have s-off than all u have to do is use visionary to root..one click....be careful as visionary have chances of brick if u don't know what ur doing

I recommend the following TUTORIALtutorial from cyanogen wiki
I rooted mine with this method and everything went smooth. i heard visionary is not recommended so my advice would be avoid visionary. take a look at that tutorial and see.

* But i have upgraded to gingerbread & the VisioNARY app from modaco gives me this warning: " This application is no longer being updated and is only recommended for use on Froyo builds."
* i dont know what s-off exactly means ...but my phones unlocked and im using an indian carrier.
Go to this guide.
Run the 'Gaining Temp Root' and 'Temp-Rooting to Backup' sections only.
Enjoy root.

First, you can't/don't want to use Visionary. This is not effective to achieve root if you're running Gingerbread, and it can potentionally brick your phone.
Since you are S-OFF (Security Off) you should be able to follow this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Since you already have S-OFF you should be able to just do the "Gaining temp root" and obtain permanent root. The root should stay because you are S-OFF. But I do wonder if you are really S-OFF because you said your phone "works with any carrier," but that does not mean you have S-OFF. That simply means you're SIM unlocked. When you boot into the bootloader (by pressing Power and Volume down) what does your phone say? The first line should say something like: VISION PVT ENG S-OFF

Do "Gaining Temp Root" and "Temp-rooting to Backup" and you should be rooted.

Okay I'm sorry if I'm sounding noobish but this is what happened.
* the 'Gaining temp root' section went all well and the device got exploited hence I exited adb shell.
* While doing 'Temp rooting for backup all the commands went well except the 'superuser' installation....it gave me the error 'INSTALL FAILED ALREADY EXIST'. Then i remembered that superuser was actually ther in my phone from the day I bought it but the app isn't responding.(still). So i skipped the step. But when I tried open titanium backup as the guide said... it wasn't able to get root access & asked to check whether my Rom is rooted.
[Q] Do I need to follow the further steps & downgrade from gingerbread to Froyo ??

This is the present condition of the boot loader.

It might be an old version of SuperUser, see if you can update it in the market.
If the fixsu.sh script finished properly, the SuperUser app should be the only thing holding you back from having root.

On market it was showing superUser installed hence I tried the SuperUser update fixer. When I open the app & try fixing it shows:
Checking Signatures.....fail
Extracting tiny busy box.......OK
Extracting SuperUser.apk.......OK
Gaining root access........... fail!
"Try downloading and flashing an update.zip from androidsu.com"
uninstall the current SuperUser app you have. then use the one included in the zip.

But I guess its a system application & it doesn't have a uninstall option!! How do i do that???
It shouldn't be a system app. See if you can uninstall it via market, or just in app settings.

No uninstall option!!
We could find the app and manually remove it.
Get temp-root, in adb shell:
Code:
cd /system/app
ls | grep user
That should ouput a name (Superuser.apk on mine, could be something like com.chainsdd.superuser.apk)
then use:
Code:
rm -rf <name of app>
and it'll be gone.

I just got my M8 yesterday after running over my previous phone, and immediately started looking into s-off and root. Am I screwed with the 4.4.3 update when it comes to s-off, because it seems like firewater won't work. Is there a different exploit that works? I couldn't find anything searching. My apologizes about the noobness, I'm always like this when I first get a new device. Many thanks in advance, sorry for any errors grammar-wise, I'm on my phone.

You need to use Sunshine. It costs $25 and not transferrable to a different phone, but it is worth it IMHO.

Cool, thanks. Sunshine is just for s-off, right? I can still root and bootloader unlock without sunshine, correct?

I did, then I must have done something wrong. had a pretty constant reboot problem. Ended up buying S-Off and flashing GPE ruu.

Sweet, thank you very much. I'm just a bit tight after buying this phone and having a 1k mile road trip this week. Good to know I can get my root on.
I just did the same thing I love it no more sense or HTC preventing me from running the latest software

Correct, but I preferred to get S-off with sunshine then root and unlock the bootloader without having to get the HTC developer unlock. This way HTC doesn't have any record of the bootloader being unlocked.
