HI all
im having a problem on my m8 tmobile.
i got it in the US and im using it in another country - all works good except one thing.
lets say i have a contact saved in my address book as DAVE and his phone number is 12345678
when Dave calls me i see his name on the screen - all ok
when dave sends me an SMS the sms app doesnt recognize him as one of my contacts and the only thing i see is the country code and then 12345678.
i tried to add the country code to the contact and the SMS worked fine but when i get a call from him now its not recognized there and all i see on the screen is the country code and his phone number 12345678.
bottom line - its not just dave , its for 100% of my contacts.
please please help

I'D guess it's set to expect a ten digit US phone number. I think that is a property set in the build.prop. what country or locale do you want it to default to? I'm not sure I can help but I'll try...

Just wondering if anyone knows how to fix this:- I have the phone numbers input in my contact list in this way - 8765 4321. Whenever I make a call, either directly from the contact list, or by inputting the phone number using the phone keys, the phone number display automatically changes to (876) 54-321. When I have incoming calls, caller ID also shows (876) 54-321. I know it does the job (of making phone calls) but it's a bit annoying to have the numbers displayed like that. Thanks
try going to regional settings, then choose your country, or any other country except usa... Hope this helps!

thanks for your suggestion, I've selected Hong Kong in regional settings and it works ok now.
I have my new HTC Trophy set up to sync with Exchange/Outlook. I'm in Norway, so my contacts phone numbers are stored in Outlook in this format: +47 12345678
Now, when in Norway and getting incoming calls from 12345678, the phone does not recognize the caller.
Is this a known issue? Any workarounds other than removing +47 from all my contacts?
I'm having the same issue!
Anyone know how to setup WP7 to recognize not only the full number?
Nothing new here?
i noticed that in the windows live contacts section you can specify which country the contact is in,..would that help?
i don't know..i'm not having these problems to be honest!
In outlook you store the phone number with +47 but when you dial the number, you want to dial it without the +47
Is that correct?
I have had similar issues with other phones with extra "0" in between region/country/city codes, for example in Germany.
I have a couple of ideas:
1. There is the International Dialing assist function. I have no idea what it does other than what's described undertneat it... Does that do anything helpful?
2. What if you create a separate Windows Live account, and add in /copy your contacts, without the +47; then link the two contacts. The contacts will appear as just 1 contact in your phone, and you'll have the option to call with or without the +47
So here is the deal:
I have set all my contacts mobile numbers using the right local area code (for example 04111-8181-8181) so when I’m traveling to other city the call is routed correctly. But when someone call me I receive the number without the area code (example 8181-8181) and the phone did not match this with the contact.
So the problem is not when I'm dialing the number but when I receive an incoming call from my contacts.
I don't know what this International Assist do too but is turned On.
And hboos, I didn't find where I do set up this Country in Live Contacts but I don't think that this is the problem since all of my most important contacts are coming from Outlook.
Thanks
I store all my contacts like this one: +49123456 without any spaces. My HD7 recognizes them all. Perhaps you have to remove the space?
Well, if removing the spaces/formatting doesn't work, you can always go with my other suggestion. Create a separate address book in a Windows Live account with the incoming CID number, and link the two contacts on WP7 (open contact 1, click the chain link at the bottom, click contact 2). WP7 is even smart enough to suggest you likely links.
Talys, this suggestion lead me to another question: Is there one button to link all my contacts or I need to go one by one (because I have 1200+ contacts).
I'll try to remove the spaces.
Just an update, didn't work removing all the spaces
I've got the same problem. Living in Norway, syncing with Exchange/Outlook and storing all my phone numbers with a +47 prefix. I'm sure creating a windows live contact for each of my Exchange/Outlook contact and link them would work. But with 800+ contacts, the thought of maintaining two lists doesn't sound like a feasible solution for me.
I've tried the following.
Using a 0047 prefix instead of the +47. Same problem.
Removing any spaces that Outlook add automatically. Same problem
Using a windows live contacts instead of Outlook/Exchange contacts. Same problem.
The best solution I've come up with so far, is to store all my Outlook/Exchange contacts with two numbers. One without the prefix and one with. This isn't really working either I like to store mobile number where they belong.
However, everything seams to work as expected with SMS/MMS messages. The +47 prefix doesn’t cause any problems what so ever.
Now with some developers already getting access to WP7 registry I think it's a matter of time to find the entry to edit

I don't think there's a button to automatically link your contacts.... that's a lot of contacts to link! But you only need to link the ones that are important for Call Display, right? So the list would be smaller?
i always have the same problem on wm6 and had was to edit the registry caller ID match the default is 8 so if you change it to 6 or 7 then it will be ok..so its just to get access to the wp7 registy to change that setting

Sorry to bring that again but that's THE POINT!! We need to hack the registry to edit this.
Anyone have done this?

no....there is no access YET to the registry or file system
try this reg key
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone]
"CallIDMatch"=dword:7
Have you tried Settings -> Applications -> phone and International assist - On?

I don't think this is the problem, or if it is, the default value is higher than 8 as all phonenumbers in Norway has 8 digits. 11 if you also count the +47.
In any case, works fine for me using Telia in Sweden - I have numbers stored in a variety of ways including +46 (0123) 12345 as well as +4612312345 and they all seem to show who's calling. Could be it's operator dependant somehow?
I have the same problem, my contacts are synced from Google. Country Slovenia, format +386 31xxxxxx. Number does not link to name of the contact. Tried Caller ID fix from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907971, but problem remains. Can someone try and see if it works for him?
i have a lot of phone numbers on my mobile.
i downloaded all the numbers from Gmail when i entered my gmail email and password.
now: i travel a lot so i have the important numbers installed in my mobile with my country international number and the not so important numbers with the normal phone number i use when i am in my country.
all of the numbers that starts with the phone numbers with out the country code, the name that i have put that number to will not appear but if i put it in international code the name appears with out a problem.
if i call jack for example with the international code it will appear like a normal call in the phone log, and when he calls me it will appear like a new call and will not tell me that i have called him before.
so no one has this problem?
shod i factory reset the phone?
So the problem is it doesn't match the number with a contact when they call you, unless you saved the same number with the country code?
Just a thought but is your phone set to your own region? I haven't looked at the matching code so it could be that it should simply match any number which contains the number in your contacts, regardless of country code. It could also be a match against your Local (regional setting). I don't really have this problem personally since I always enter all numbers with the country code since I also travel abroad often enough for it to be worth the effort.
EDIT: You can check the code here.
what will this code do?
i had the galaxy S with out problems, now with the galaxy nexus when i look at the call log, some times you can see the name some times no.
My freind just bought a Galaxy nexus, he had a nokia phone and I told him to sync his contact with google to get them on his GN. everything thing went well and all of his contacts now shows in pepoles app in the phone.
when he recives a call the name will be displayed in the caller ID and in the miss call notification bar but not in the call log. all incoming, outgoing and miss call in the call log don't show names only numbers but in the contact list it shows all of his contacts. any ideas? suggesions?
I have the same problem even though my previous phone was Nexus One!
Solution
I found a work around the problem that I've read somewhere but i can't remember. Basically add to your contact's phone number the international key +1, +2, +44 etc. It's long an painful but it can't be helped .

Close but no cigar...
I live in Argentina and all my previous android phones used to work fine (caller id contact name was displayed) even if you used the international dialing prefix for Argentina mobile phones + 54 9 XXXXXXXXXX.
After getting my GN i found that contact names would not be recognized unless i take the "9" out of each number, which is inconvenient if you travel a lot overseas and you need to call back.
Is there any way to set the maximum digits that Android matches to a contact phone number ??
I was having this exact same problem and changing the code to (+44) (UK) did not work. I have searched long and hard as to why this is happening and I don't know. It is not due to the fact is not at +44 because sometimes the contact name will display and other times it won't. Is no-one else having this issue? It happens for the Messaging too! Gets quite annoying after a bit
I have same problem
I got an Irish Galaxy Nexus a couple of weeks ago (my 1st smartphone and 1st Android).
All my numbers are saved in international format, ie. southern Ireland numbers like 0861234567 are stored as +353861234567 and UK numbers like 07845123456 are stored as +447845123456.
The problem arises when someone rings me and their number shows in non international format - it doesn't show the persons name from contacts.
This was never a problem with any phone I had previously - any ideas?
Please see http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24026. There's no solutions yet, though.

That doesn't work for me, I always have saved my numbers in international format but this just seems to be a bug with how the nexus matches numbers with contacts.
All previous phones (non smartphones) I have owned have not had problems like this, I think all they used to do was.match the last 7 digits of the number against the contacts.
When i recieve SMS the number comes with country code, and in my People directory i have the numbers saved without country code. So, in my SMS header, it wont recognize who is sending me sms, just number. When i call that number, phone recognizes person and writes its name and picture.
Any way i can avoid this except editing all contacts by adding country code to them ( for Serbia it is +381...)
Thanks in advance

Dobar dan!
In short, the only way is to add the country code for each contact who is outside of Serbia. If that is happening with contacts in Serbia it may be an issue with your carrier (Telekom Srbija?).
