[Q] Galaxy nexus call log not showing the contact names - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My freind just bought a Galaxy nexus, he had a nokia phone and I told him to sync his contact with google to get them on his GN. everything thing went well and all of his contacts now shows in pepoles app in the phone.
when he recives a call the name will be displayed in the caller ID and in the miss call notification bar but not in the call log. all incoming, outgoing and miss call in the call log don't show names only numbers but in the contact list it shows all of his contacts. any ideas? suggesions?

I have the same problem even though my previous phone was Nexus One!

Solution
I found a work around the problem that I've read somewhere but i can't remember. Basically add to your contact's phone number the international key +1, +2, +44 etc. It's long an painful but it can't be helped .

Thanks for the trick, it would take him sometime to edite 500+ numbers but it does the job

Close but no cigar...
I live in Argentina and all my previous android phones used to work fine (caller id contact name was displayed) even if you used the international dialing prefix for Argentina mobile phones + 54 9 XXXXXXXXXX.
After getting my GN i found that contact names would not be recognized unless i take the "9" out of each number, which is inconvenient if you travel a lot overseas and you need to call back.
Is there any way to set the maximum digits that Android matches to a contact phone number ??

I was having this exact same problem and changing the code to (+44) (UK) did not work. I have searched long and hard as to why this is happening and I don't know. It is not due to the fact is not at +44 because sometimes the contact name will display and other times it won't. Is no-one else having this issue? It happens for the Messaging too! Gets quite annoying after a bit

I have same problem
I got an Irish Galaxy Nexus a couple of weeks ago (my 1st smartphone and 1st Android).
All my numbers are saved in international format, ie. southern Ireland numbers like 0861234567 are stored as +353861234567 and UK numbers like 07845123456 are stored as +447845123456.
The problem arises when someone rings me and their number shows in non international format - it doesn't show the persons name from contacts.
This was never a problem with any phone I had previously - any ideas?

Please see http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24026. There's no solutions yet, though.

That doesn't work for me, I always have saved my numbers in international format but this just seems to be a bug with how the nexus matches numbers with contacts.
All previous phones (non smartphones) I have owned have not had problems like this, I think all they used to do was.match the last 7 digits of the number against the contacts.

phone number matching bug?

Hi all,
I posted somethinig similar to this a while ago. I am using my Diamond to call VoIP numbers, i.e. call a landline then wait for a few seconds and enter the destination number followed by hash #. The landline number is the same for all destinations and only the second part differs, which is the destination number. The numbers look like:
0123456789, 00447890123456#
Now, if I store two or more such contacts in the address book, e.g.
Bar: 0123456789, 00441234567890#
Foo: 0123456789, 00447890123456#
Joe: 0123456789, 00445678901234#
the, regardless which one I call, say Foo, in the call log it will always list "Bar" as having been called. The same happens if I replace the comma with a "p". The number however is stored correctly, i.e. if I redial it, it will call the number for Foo which is what was dialed in the first place.
It appears as being a bug in WM6.1. I haven't tried WM6.5 (anyone?).
How in the world can I fix this?
Cheers for any help
foo? bar? linux-user? i google your text for translaiting but nothing understanding.
do you mean that the order is not correct?
(if you can give an example with more friendly-understanding/windows-user than you can get earlier response from other forum-users.)

I understood perfectly. Perhaps it is a english as a second language barrier. I will try to restate the issue. (I wish I knew the answer.)
When you have a extra long number stored to a contact (as you might when you dial a AT&T toll free number with some pauses, then a passcode, then a number.) And you have more than one contact stored with this long number... they all have the same first 10 or so numbers. So regardless of which one was called last, when you look up the call history log, it displays the first one.
It would appear the call history only looks at the first 10 or so digits to find a match.

if this is the case, you can use advanced config or diamond tweak (forgot which one had the option) and from there you can set how many numbers it should check
@misfitflt: Thanks for rephrasing the problem .. I was just about to post. Cheers!

I forgot to mention I already played with the number of trailing digits in AdvConfig (that's what apparently the option is called) ... I tried values from the default 6 to 20 and nothing changed. The buggy behaviour persists.
I recently tried a new dialer with address book application that replaces the TF3D dialer; it is called Inesoft Phone v4.5 (it's actually pretty cool). This one does differentiate between numbers with pauses or commas correctly!
I'll try switching off the dialer completely and use the built-in WM6.1 dialer to see if that works fine. If so then the bug is in TouchFlo (?).
Anyone knows of other good dialer software that I could try?
Cheers,
p.s. I'm surprised this hasn't surfaced until now though ... anyone out there with the same issue? Or maybe I need to give the thread a more appropriate title.
i have the same issue but learnt to live with it as i didnt want to shift to another dialer.
tried playing with the number in adv config but of no avail
lemme know if you find anything

HTC Desire doesn't show sms sender name

Hi in my country Lebanon ,mobile numbers starts with 03 or 70 or 71 than the 6 digit contact number.. the problem is that my HTC desire doesn't show SMS sender name upon receiving sms sent from senders that starts with 03(local sms), instead showing the sender number.I am having this sender in my contact list. There is no issues while receiving international SMS or senders with phone numbers starting with 70 or 71.
But when the same person calls me, its displaying the caller name correctly.
What would be the reason?
I tried the adding the country code +961 to the contacts, but if i do that, the sms problem disappear BUT call receiving stopped showing caller name - only number is shown.
One thing i noticed is, while receiving SMS, the sender number is preceded by country code(+961) while receiving a call only caller number is there.
a temporary workaround is to add 2 numbers for each contact: when with the country code +961 and another one without it.. but it is frustrating if u have hundreds off contacts
My iphone had the same problem but it was fixed easily by downloading a program "Caller Id fix, i think this is due to the number of digits in the phone number it seems.the device needs minimum 8 digits and it doesn't consider the zero in 03 as a digit!
Any help?
I am in Lebanon too and I have the same problem.
Since we have the (03) area code, the matching fails on it because the phone number would be 1 digit less than the configured matching preset in Android.
This sucks big time. I've read on all forums, and there's no fix. I tried asking in htc-linux chat room, and no one answers We're doomed lol..
I'm on Android 2.2 by the way, and the problem is still there.
Apple fixed this on iPhone it by adding a database of countries and specifying the matching preset for each country. Android = no
Same problem here, there must be a way. Perhaps modifying some XML in Android root?
Same problem here. no solution yet.
Only workaround is to Backup ur google contacts (CSV), edit them in Excel so that you would have 2 numbers for each contact, then re-import into google.
Even with hundreds of contacts it should not take you more than 10 minutes.
Hopefully this would be fixed soon.
i am using handcent sms. it is a good temprorary solution. it shows contact names correctly..
But I would like to see a solution for the built in sms application from htc

Hi Guys,
Anyone found a solution for this issue. I am on HTC Desire HD and still have the problem. In addition if you store the number as 9613xxxxxx then the name will not be shown when someone calls in.
Apparently it's a problem only with HTC since Samsung Android doesn't have this problem.
Thanks
Are you all on custom software? Have you recently flashed a new ROM??
I had the same issue once, where I hadn't restored Contacts from Titanium properly, so all SMS I received did not show sender ID.
Just a thought...

[REQ] [BOUNTY] App for saving Caller ID non contacts name display

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a fix for SGS i9000 for Rogers/Fido name display. I get the name correctly on my phone while the number is ringing, however, when I answer or don't pickup the call, I just get the number.
Thank you
i don't follow...
when i miss i call i get the normal SMS from 8888 telling me that i missed a call from such and such from the phone number that phoned me
and in the phone call log, i see the little red arrow that i missed a call with the name and phone number of the contact
if it was not a contact then it just shows the phone number (which is normal of all previous cell phones i've used)
so... what exactly is not working for you?
I don't have that feature that would send me an SMS with the name and number. I just have a "Name Display and Caller number" feature. On FIDO supported phones any person that calls, even if that person is not in the contact list, his/her name would display. On my phone, SGS i9000M, Name Display works only while the phone is ringing....

that is correct
this is how it works normally on any cell phone that i've had with Fido
only displays the name when it's ringing
it doesn't save the name, it never did for any of my previous cell phones
that's only for people that are not on your contact list
And I guess the question was if there is a way to have the name not only the number in the call log after the call is completed. Is there a fix for this? Thx
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
well there is nothing to FIX because it's not broken
the "Advanced Caller ID" the one that shows you the callers name even though it is not in your contact list, is a network feature
not a phone feature
the build in phone feature will match the caller ID from the network provided number to your contact list then show you the caller name, if it's not in your contact list you will just get the number
that is standard on all phones with caller ID
the trick that the network uses, is that they tag the name of the person calling you along the caller ID number
older phones wouldn't even display the name
newer phones will show the name, but not be able to do anything with it, it just displays it that's all
the build in software on most phones are only designed to save the caller ID number, no extra stuff tagging along.
translation you will need a Developer to come up with a new software to be able to save both the caller ID + the extra strings attached
Just to confirm my old nokia n97 did save the name in missed calls.

I see what you mean, on some phones when someone calls you and you do not have the persons contact saved the following happens:
1. Name is displayed along with the number while ringing.
2. When you look up the phone log the name is in there and when you save the contact it already has the name typed in for you.
On the Galaxy S number 2 does not happen. I dont know how to change it to make it work however, I am interested.
A new software will be required to do that, none of my previous phone had that feature
time to hire an android developer to make and app to do that
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I have the same features with Fido and i found it to be annoying that it wouldnt show the callers name(not on my contacts) in missed calls. If its important they can call again lol.
Off-Topic:
I am about to purchase the Captivate from Rogers(finally its out...) but im with Fido, what im wondering is it possible to unlock the phone with the unlock/unfreeze guide located in the dev section. I just dont want to create a new thread for one question
PS. It didnt allow me to post the link to the guide because i just joined, sorry for the trouble lol.
I would appreciate if someone can post a fix for this issue. I'll throw in some money for a fix
Me too!

if you guys really want this feature implemented you'll have to put up a bounty to hire a developer to make an app for that

[Q] Anyone else get weird phone numbers in texts?

I looked around and found similar-ish issues but not quite the same... I have a VZ GN and normally it works well, I get texts with just "Contact Name (number of texts)" but ever so often I will get a text with "Contact Name (xxx) xxx-xxxx" where the phone number is nothing even close to correct - weird area codes especially. then I'll have two threads from the same contact - one correct but one bizarre.
I've added the phone number to the contact in the past and it doesn't come back, but now I'm really starting to wonder WHY this is happening in the first place.
Thoughts?

If you're using the stock SMS app (rather than the Google Voice app) to send/receive text messages (using your Google Voice number), you'll see exactly what you're describing. The number you see will basically be a forwarding number used by Google to get your message to the right person.
From what I've seen, the number will be unique to each contact, but won't have anything to do with their actual number. Everything will be correct on their end though, and your messages will be exchanged with the correct recipient.

Right, and I am using the stock SMS app - but I don't think I'm using GV. The only thing I use it for is visual voicemail (forward all calls to GV which then get routed back to my phone) but I have it set so all my calls use my regular number. People don't text me on my GV number... I don't think...

You can check at http://voice.google.com. If you see the messages there, they were sending them to your GV number.

Ah-ha!
Indeed they were... Not too sure how someone who sends me texts every couple days all of a sudden uses my GV number that's been stored in their phone for months, but at least I know what's going on.
Thanks!

If I ever delete all messages and then when I go to send a message to someone who has multiple numbers saved I have no idea which # to send a message to. That is prob what happened.

Using F500L in USA AT&T/Cricket dial with +1 issue

So I have a strange issue and was wondering if there is a fix or some setting I missed?
Every time someone sends me a text from a local number it adds a +1 to their phone number, like with any long distance US phone numbers, on previous phones that wasn't an issue. I could chose to call that person back and the call would connect without a problem. Now I have to remove the +1 or it will not connect. Also, if I text the person adding them as a recipient from my contacts without a +1, all replies with a +1 are not threaded together..
Halp?!

EDIT: just in case we have two area codes that are considered "local" 305 and 786. I have my area code set to 305.
