I just got a wifi only 16GB Nexus 7 2013 and one of my first priorities was to get it online via my SGS3. Tethering via wifi was easy enough, but I wanted bluetooth tether for power savings and ease of use. Unfortunately Tmobile had removed the bluetooth tether option from the SGS3, so I loaded a custom ROM that did include it. I then discovered that Google had removed the bluetooth tether client from the Nexus, but research showed that it did have it in at least one Jelly Bean release, so I had to do the following:
Load a stock JB image: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
TowelRoot: http://towelroot.com/
SuperSU via Play Store
Disable system (not app) update nag: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34274623&postcount=1
Load respective FoxFi/PDAnet apps on both devices and follow bluetooth connection wizards
Profit!
Notes:
I had to use FoxFi/PDAnet because I chose JSS15R which already had the bluetooth internet client removed. If you find otherwise or try JSS15Q, let us know. Of course, using FoxFi/PDAnet also negated the primary reason for loading a custom ROM on the SGS3, but I like it better anyway.

anyone haev their tether working on 4.2? wifi tether, built in tether, and all other 3rd party apps dont work anymore. it was working on 4.1.2 but not on 4.2.
Wifi-tether working straight away here, I just enabled it and my computer connected straight away.
I did however install 4.2 with a full wipe, it seems people using the OTA have had plenty of bugs non of which I've experienced.

Mines not working :crying:
Seems to be a common problem over at the Wireless Tether for Root Users development site :-/
I use it a ton and miss it badly.
mine seems to be broken too how weird

any update on this? works on macs but not windows or xbox.
I was using a AOKP ROM with lean kernel (4.1.x) and wifi tethering was working fine.
I then went to 4.2.1 and 4.2.2, WiFi tethering so far has been broken.
I tried Bigxie's deoxed, tried Android Revolution HD 10.x, and Rootbox's 4.2.2 nightly with the same result where WiFi tethering doesn't work. In my case, the client that is trying to connect will connect, IP is assigned but it won't be able to access the internet.
The ROM flashing were a full wipe, as well as dirty wipe - made no difference.
I was using Pdanet on a USB tether and it no longer works after update. My phone is totally stock with no mods. I did a factory wipe and reinstalled everything and still a no go. PC is a Windows 7 box with all associated drivers reinstalled. Contacted June fabrics (Pdanet Dev) about it and they think its a driver issue.

I also have these threads gpoing on it. Though you will get better support here than at the Google Dev forums.

For anyone that is interested, I got an email from PDAnet yesterday that says they have fixed the problem with a new PC side software install. I don't know if this helps any of you but there is a fix out there at least for PDAnet.
Hello
Scenario: I've a galaxy nexus. Yesterday I've decided to upgrade my 4.1.1 (stock rom) to 4.2.1. downloaded 4.2.1 file from Google factory images then wipe and update the phone. It seemed great both Play Store and browser but after a while VPN connection speed got slow and slower till stopped working at all (We are in Iran and have to use VPN for US services like play store) The first trick I used was change the VPN protocol to PPTP (it was L2TP at first) It connected again but can't received packets at Play Store and Google login pages in browser but without VPN connection Google login page works great!
Used Solutions: as I've read before in the xda deleted my Google account and added it again, create a new account, hard reset my phone, reset my router, change my vpn connection and use another servers, remove Play Store updates and clear cache, reinstall rom, change to Takju, install 4.1.2 and upgraded with OTA this time, install Samsung stock rom (4.0.1 Netherlands & Luxembourg) and try to get back 4.1.1 but it didn't get any updates from Samsung, Root and unroot, market enabler and market unlocker, and many other I can't remember but no result at all.
Request: If you had this or something like this story please share your solution that worked for you.
Additional Info: My network connection is working perfectly and there is no problem on port 443 and others as I tested this on windows, ios, other android lower than 4.2. vpn connection is on a dedicated server and there is no limitation rules on it. I've tested other ip changer tools like hidemyass, vpnreactor, orbot, etc.
sorry for poor English, ask me if didn't get what I say in some parts
Thank you all! :cyclops:
Hello,
I an running stock rooted 4.2.2 on vzw gnex. I have been using wifi tether since I got the phone and now with 4.2.2 it is not working. I get started with errors warning. log shows failed to configure AP and start AP.
I tried MWALT2s disable of native tether check which seem to run fine in recovery but I still get the same errors.

Has anyone with stock rooted 4.2.2 been able to get wifi tether working?
Thanks,
Pupule

the wifi tether app no longer works but the built-in tether does. there's a copy of a modified version of wifi tether floating around (actually, in this Q & A forum thread!) that some are saying does work but I have not tested it myself (yet)
{edited to add} well, I just installed the hacked version of wifi tether and it works perfectly. the link to it is here in the Q & A thread so you should be able to find it. you will need "unknown sources" checked to allow it to install...
Can anyone tell me how to get Wifi Teather to work with an ICS kernel ? I don't want a non-root solution that requires some additional software on the clients, and if possible, i'd avoid having to install some non-ICS ROM.
I've wasted a whole day but always run into the same issue:
rooted GB works fine: Download "Wifi Teather" from market, configure for Device Profile "Samsung Galaxy S2", perfect!
Using rooted ICS (I927UCLJ3_I927UCALJ3_I927UCALJ3_HOME.tar.md5), same configuration of "Wifi Teather" results in a
red "failed" in "Enabling NAT rules". Everything else stays green. And of course this means that clients can tether with the glide, but they do not get routed correctly (eg: can ping only the glide but nothing further from the tethered client).
This was the rooted stock ICS installed from Odin after clear data/cache/dalvik, format root. I also tried to apply the tethering fix for the leaked ICS kernel (i927_9SEP12_tetheringFix.zip) (of course after another clear data/cache/dalvik/format-root). And i tried to overwrite the kernel with LiteKernel-4.0-20130121.zip, and i tried to remove with Titanium Backup the Tethering Manager apk.
All this stuff did not change the output of "Wifi Teather" at all.
Then i install IcePop ROM, and "Wifi Tether" works fine there, no problems with "Enabling NAT rules". Alas, i can not use IcePop because it has removed Exchange Email, and thats one of those pieces you can not re-install from market or backup AFAIK.
So, what the heck is needed to make "Wifi Tether" work with stock ICS rooted ? Does it work at all ? I've been reading forum posts up and down the wazoo, but any claims to it working have been very unspecific.
*sigh*
Interesting
Been playing around a bit more:
The stock ICS built-in Wifi Hotspot option (under settings) does actually work fine once i applied i927_9SEP12_tetheringFix.zip. Before installing that fix a popup window from the provider comes up telling me i should pay $611/min - or some other text with the number 611, can't quite remember .
But the "Wifi Tether" app does not work with stock ICS neither before nor after installing of that framework fix. I wonder whether this indicates an error in the "Wifi Tether" app. Then again, it works in IcePop.
Wrt. to the way the provider sees or does not see tethering - does it make a difference whether one uses the built-in tethering option or the external app "Wifi Tether"
Learning by doing
So, now i flashed dmans stock ICS rom UCL33-ATT-NEW.zip from here, and lo and behold, the "Wifi Tether" app works, and the build-in tether option does of course not work (not applied the framework fix).
So... The only difference over the real stock update from ATT (rooted with su binary) seems to be that dmans stock is deodexed, zipaligned and batch optimized. "Wifi Tether" is stating that it's installing some stuff binaries et. al. Is it possible that it fails to do so on a system thats not deodexed/xipaligned or batch optimized ? I don't quite understand this.
I've been scouring forums trying to find an answer, hoping someone can help.
I've got a rooted Sprint Note II running Android 4.4.2 and I can't get any version of wifi tethering to work.
I tried the X Tether xposed module (with a bunch of different settings) and TrevE Mod of course doesn't work.
I tried to purchase Fabio Grasso's WiFi tether router (which I saw many times in my forum searches) but playstore on my phone says it's not supported for my device and won't let me download it.
I was able to purchase and install it on my Note Pro 12.2 tablet, but couldn't get an APK to transfer over to my Note 2. The apk downloader chrome extension only works on a computer, not on the android version of chrome (as far as I can tell) so I couldn't get it that way either.
I honestly forgot which ROM I flashed, but it was either Diamond Rom v6.0 or Alliance-NE2-Build_1 (pretty sure it was the latter)
I'm willing to flash another ROM to get this to work. Not sure what to do, but I really want tether working again, especially since my tablet is the wifi only version.
Any tips?
rwilco's rom's been working fine with tethering for me:

i'm only using 1.1 and using the native wifi hotspot
