I have to moto x so I have been without a SD card since my note 3. with all the new updates I ma not sure if it is still possible to move apps to sd without root. I wan to run games from my sd card and with only 16gb i am sure we will only be left with about 8gb which isn't enough for my game collection. Google search wasn't my friend in this case since the tab is fairly new.
Apps will run from the sd card. Not all of the system ones, but nothing new there.
Question is. Can we download apps from the ( Google play store) to the SD CARD.
You download them to the tablet then move to SD card. I don't think you can download to the card directly
From what i have read the with the new kittkat updates the games can run from storage but the game data which is the most consuming part stays on internal memory. 16gb is about enough for 3 game max plus y usual apps. I have two 64gb cards but that does me no good if the bulk of the game data doesn't transfer.
I just got the Tab S 16gb and it can have quite a bit installed onto it. I have the following games installed:
Baldurs Gate
Clash of Clans
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD
Order and Chaos
Osmos HD
Shadowrun Returns
Ravensword 2
Vendetta Online
World of Goo
Also have quite a few other apps for customization and functionality as well as some HD movies and I still have about 2gigs left. It would be nice to send the entire data over to a SD card but for now it is working out just fine.

How many Gb's are those games taking up alone? When we receive the device we only have around 9 Gb's to work with..
why are the hd movie on internal memory? they don't run smooth from the card?

The games, by themselves, are taking about 6gigs. Other apps are around another gig or so and then my pics and movies. I turned off quite a bit of bloatware and other apps that I just don't use. I did transfer what I could for the apps to a SD card but that is minimal til they fix it or root comes along.

Didn't have an SD at that time and I wanted to see how far I could stretch the 16gb. I use MX Player mainly but it is too bad it stutters on 4k videos as they look amazing on this device.
Here are the games I have installed.

Here is my available memory
After sending the games to the SD card is the game data being stored on the card or internal memory? I'm going to buy it anyway since they have that $100 savings for an old tablet. I want to have at least 4 gb internal at all times.

Internal memory til they either fix KitKat and allow it or til root comes along.
Aren't most modern games use app data just for Saves and stuff? At least in the app manager of my Nexus 7 2k13 most newer games like Baldurs Gate show only a few MB as data and the bulk as app size. Isn't it mainly a think for older games because the Play Store used to have a small size limit?

I bought a 32gb SD card for my Epic as I really need the space!
So I took my 16gb card, plugged it into my laptop, copied all the files to a folder and removed it.
I put the 32gb SD card into my phone, formatted it, removed it, plugged it into my laptop, dragged all the files onto it, removed it, put it back in my Epic and none of the apps that were on my SD card will run.
The Epic shows the massive amount of storage from the card, but it simply will not run any of the apps on the card.
Did I miss a step? Did I do something wrong? Can anyone offer any advice?
This is driving me crazy so any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
use a backup app?
Maybe if you use titanium backup or mybackup pro to make a backup of apks and data; copy all to the 32, pop it in and then restore the backup, there may be some other info that tells android where to find the apps and their data.
good luck
I just got a 32 card as well to replace my 16, did the same steps you just described and it never missed a step. All apps working normally. Can u explore android secure and see that they are in there. I know on some custom roms every so often, the system wldnt load the sd card properly. It wld show the apps as installed in app mnager, but wld be grayd out as if the card was removed. That was on eb13 and eco5 roms. I shld note I did the sd card switch while running hurricane eh17 gingerbread. Sorry, this is probly not anything helpful.
P.s. Most often had the loading issue when I had a ton of apps on the sd card.
I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to work. I even found this awesome free service called Tonido & tried that...no go.
When I put it in my phone it shows that 29 point something gb of storage is there so the phone is recognizing the size of the memory...but apparently the files aren't showing up on the SD card even though they are there. All that shows up in the app drawer are the apps stored on the internal phone storage. This is really frustrating. I really need some help with this
I would try app backup and reinstall or app backup reinstall.
They scan the sd card and show what you have and you can reinstall. Never tried titanium. So dont know if that works or not.
Best of Luck....Let us Know!!

Backing up is Very Very Important. No Matter the Case. Anyone, even Rooters and Developers will tell you that.
Sure at any point and time, not everyone, but Most have forgot.
Check your 32gb card folders if nothing inside 0kb then you have faulty card mean not truly 32gb but a lot less.

There's an app on the market that rescans your sd for you. Can't remember what its called and chances r it won't help it find the apps, but its worth a shot. Sd scan, or sd rescan, something like that.
If you go into settings, apps, manage apps, are these apps showing up there either?
Also, if u put the old card back in, do they come back?
I ended up buying My Backup Pro and it worked for the most part. I backed up everything online, swapped SD cards and "restored" to the 32gb card. A few photos & videos wouldn't back up. I'm also having some incredibly annoying issues with Beautiful Widgets. I have uninstalled & installed several times but it doesn't fix.
All my apps, data, pictures, vids, etc are still on the old SD card. Hopefully I can figure out how to take the BW stuff from the old SD card & get it to the new one.
Thanks all for helping me out.
Try "fancy widgets". I like it better than beatiful widgets. Tho, I don't think it has much more than weather, clock, and battery widgets. Some sexy skins available for it

The only issue there is that I paid for BW a long time ago. The standard skin works but none of the other ones will. Sucks.
I just don't get it.
My 16gb card has 14.73gb of space used. Which is why I bought a 32gb card.
I put every single folder, file, etc on there AGAIN (folder by folder this time) and my card still doesn't show all the files being on there. This tells me that for some reason that data isn't being recognized by the phone?
I can't believe I'm the first person that's ever encountered this issue!

Sorry mang. The only thing i can suggest is returning the card for a new one if its not too much of a hassle. I had similar trouble with my second 16gb card and i gave up and got a new one. If no one (who actually knows what they are talking about) checks in here, try reposting under a different description. Good luck
I dont know if this is possible, but since it says 29 total and 26 still available, and you were transferring over 14 gigs to it, maybe the card isnt even close to a 32gig and is just reporting that it is.

I think the only conclusion is that the card is corrupted in some way. It's the only explanation. The 16gb card is working fine...there's just no room on it!
Guess I have to return it and get another.
Downloaded the apk and data (for the PowerVR) from outside the market, it says it's incompatible in the market, but that's not true. I installed it, started it up, worked flawlessly. I attempted to buy the full game (which is an in app purchase), I received a confirmation email from Google, and money was drawn out of my account, but the transaction failed for some reason.
I don't know why all these games are "incompatible" (Real Racing 2, Modern Combat 3) when they work fine on my Galaxy Nexus.
UPDATE: Downloaded the American apk (v000306) and the purchase went through, it was $6.99. There doesn't seem to by a discounted price although there seems to be a discount on other EA games.

can you upload apk and data on megaupload?? (it's a free app at the end)
thx
L.
probably illegal to post links. FYI.
And I don't know why people have gotten into the habit of restricting phones right off the bat. They should just block known incompatibilities. Just like Netflix before they made it "open". Once you change your build.prop and force a Market download, it plays fine. Gameloft and others are even worse. They do a check in-game to see if your phone matches.
We go 'round and around with this all the time.

the data wont download keeps timing out..
I asked a friend to download the latest apk from Market. It throws an error when I install and run it on my GN though and it won't even try to download the sdcard data. Did anyone else get the latest version working, ie. getting it to start and then allowing you to buy it using in-app purchasing?
I really want this game.
I really want this too, would it not be possible to change the build prop to a handset that is supported, purchase and download and then change it back?
I would try however I have no idea how to change the build prop....

Most likely, yes. I don't want to mess around with it on my GN though as I have a Nexus One that is listed as compatible. I just don't have it here right now.
Not sure if it is blocked because of ICS or the GN either. You'd probably want to change build.pringerprint at least.
Doesnt work for me.. I might have an old version though
I got it working thanks to another user. The key was to start it in Airplane mode. The SD data is the same for both versions (row and na) so just rename the folder to match the package name of the version you have.
I also now had access to my Nexus One so I could download it there and then buy it. It ended up costing 7 SEK + tax (8,33 SEK in total) which translates to roughly $1 + tax so it's certainly still on sale.
When you say you got it working...how did you get the SD card data? For me it just never starts downloading. How would airplane mode help when you need to get the game data?
I see it is downloadable from several sites around the net but I am not clear which other phone would be the best match.
Help?

I meant that I downloaded the SD Data from sites unofficially hosting it.
Not sure what problem you are having. Incorrect or old SD data perhaps. The airplane mode is to get past the update check.
I hope they will make it officially supported soon so that I can redownload it properly from Market.
Well I can't think of what else to do. I purchased this game and it ran fine on my kindle fire and I would like it to run on my galaxy nexus but I can't seem to piece together an APK and SD card data file that works.

hey guys.
got this game working last night.
i used real racing v000314 (american) + it worked perfectly. powervr data obv (366mb, no matter where you get it from should be that size)
if you google that version you'll find the app + powervr data + instructions
(you dont need the titanium backup thing)
extract powervr data somewhere. copy the file into sd/android/data
install the apk
start playing !
you need to make sure its v000314 if you want the graphics to work flawlessly. oh & have gpu acc enabled.
I must have finally stumbled on the right files, too as I also got it working. Where are you finding a setting to turn on gpu acceleration for this game?

By the way the version I got working is 306

Use Directory Bindhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
If you get lost in that thread you can follow my direction I posted in another thread. I copied it below. It basically allows you to have your game data stored to micro sdcard but its directory is binded to internal directory where the game data is normally stored. Its the same concept as GL to SD but I find works without any issues.
Here's an example
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
Most games are stored in mnt/sdcard/android/data. So you need to create the same directory in your micro sd card for this to work. The other confusion maybe because when you add a new entry in Directory Bind you would think source is internal and target is extsdcard but its the other way around.
In root explorer go /mnt/extSDcard/ and create a folder called android and then a subfolder under it called data. (skip if you already have them)
Now go to /mnt/sdcard/android/data and you will see a list of games you've installed. An example in my case is Modern Combat 3. So in the data folder I will see a folder called "com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftM3HM" and within that folder is a subfolder called "Files".
Now we need to create the same folder and subfolder in your /mnt/extSDcard/android/data. (It's possible I didn't have to go as far creating a Files folder but I did in my case atleast for gameloft games)
Once you create the folders you can open up Directory Bind and Add a New entry.
Tap and hold the source field and it will open up a list of your directories.
You will point it to /mnt/extSDcard/android/data/com.123xxx/xxxxx then press Select.
Now tap and hold the mount field and go to /android/data/com.123xxx/xxxxx then press Select.
If you've already downloaded the game data when you opened up the game then check the box for "Transfer files from target to data." and then press Add.
Wait for the transfer to finish. When its done do a Bind Check in Directory bind. If you did it right then the floppy disc icon turns green. Any other color you did something wrong so compare both directories and correct any typos or maybe you pointed one or the other to the wrong directory.
Now some games are stored in just /mnt/sdcard/android/data/ and no subfolders. And I think some games are stored in months/sdcard/android/obb. Below are more examples of the ones I created.

I dont know really. The mod has been around for a while now and its still manual mode. But its really not hard to do. All games and most apps are stored in mnt/android/data or mnt/android/obb anyway so its easy to just create the same folder in your micro sd. And if you already downloaded the game prior to using Directory Bind, you can opt to transfer data from internal to your new directory when you add a new entry. I can add an entry in less than a minute. Also any time there's an update to the game data via play store, the update goes to external micros sd since its binded so you dont have to do anything else.

Hello, I was going through a very serious problem since days. When we have few pics in Albums, it creates cache for those pics in memory qith folder name .thumbnails
Sometimes the size of these cache is more than 1.5GB+.
This is a big issue for devices like Xperia M, with very low internal memory.
So i got a way to solve this.
For that, you will need ES File Explorer. No root is needed for this.
You have to do is follow these instructions.
1. Open ES File Explorer.
2. Make the hidden files viewable.
3. Go to DCIM folder.
4. You'll see thumbails folder, delete it.
5. Now create new file and name it as ".thumbnails" without quote.
And you are done.
Click on "Thanks" is important before going to make this thing work.
Are you aware that despite reporting 1.5GB+ size, this folder takes only 30-40MB of your storage, right? It's an issue with the stock Album app that makes the database file size displaying incorrectly, replacing the stock version with an updated version in /system/app fixed that for me...
Also, preventing the folder being created cause a big performance loss in the Album app, since it'll always regenerate the thumbnails when you open the app, but after your guide the thumbnails won't be saved, so it'll do this all the time...
And additional info regeneration of the thumbnails every time you open album will cause more battery drain as it will increase the cpu load

Well, this will be helpful for unrooted 4.1 XM single phones who are running on very lesser internal memory.

Are you sure that the cache won't just be created again?
If the answer is yes, rather than the "how to", i would be interested to know why you think that it is a good idea to completely get rid of .thumbnails...

Yes, I'm sure.
Im using it, and the cache folder will be gone for life and about battery life, how much battery life it should take? Very few, we worry about memory and not battery.

I don't have a SD Card, but I have around 300-400 photos in the internal storage, in that case the battery loss will be noticeable (I tested your tutorial to measure and I lost 2% of my battery every time it regenerated the thumbnails). Also, the phone will get hot and laggy while regenerating the thumbnails, and it'll do this every time you use the Album app or the Photos widget. In that case I still prefer wasting around 30-40MB with the thumbnails folder than having the phone getting hot and laggy every time I need to access the gallery
Camera photos stored on MicroSD card.
Having the photos taken by the camera stored directly to the microSD card is not an option? [pause for effect]
I have a 64GB SanDisk Extreme, so it's faster than writing to internal storage anyway.
On 64GB nobody cares about a few indexing cache files...
In the Camera go to settings and change Data storage to SD card.
Basic 32GB Class10 MicroSD cards are cheap as chips these days.
No, camera can save in the SD Card normally, I just didn't buy a SD Card yet. My point is that even if you don't have a SD Card, the internal space you get freed by doing this tutorial (around 30-40MB) isn't worth because of the problems it causes (laggy gallery, phone getting hot, increased battery drain, etc)...
And here's a picture...

You can move pictures, music and videos to SD card too via:
Settings -> storage -> Transfer data to SD card (under Miscellaneous).
This is a reactive process task as it doesn't proactively move stuff as you can do with a lot of applications and the camera via settings.
But handy to have when one wants to do an internal data cleanup to free up what one can of the ~2GB internal storage.
I never said that camera wouldn't let me save in the SD Card, I have the same options you mentioned in my stock 15.2.A.2.5 too. I was referring to the .thumbnails folder, it'll be on your internal storage, and following the OP tutorial you'll permanently disable it, saving a few megabytes from internal storage, but as I said before, these few megabytes you save by following the tutorial aren't worth because of the mentioned side effects the tutorial causes...

True, you still get thumbnail files in /storage/sdcard0/DCIM/thumbnails/
I want to buy the Note. Been waiting for the kitkat update. Will 16gb be enough for on-device stuff like games and apps? Will games like modern combat save additional stuff to microsd. I plan on using a 64gb microsd.
No. Go with the 32. If you're tight on money order a used one from Amazon warehouse they can go as low as $356 for the 32gb.
I wish i went with 32gb. Will probably sell my 16gb and get a 32gb one

I'd say 32 GB as well. I have 32+64gb card fully using it. Would have gone with 128gb but they are too expensive atm.
A million times, thanks
You need more memory more than ever now that we're on KitKat. Apps can create and access their own files and folders on the external SD card but all other apps can't touch them because of new permissions Google introduced in 4.4. Samsung's apps (EG: Gallery, File Manager) have universal permissions which helps a little. The only way to get full external SD access is a to root.
Now, what price should I be looking for if I want to by used/refurbished.

Also I downloaded a couple of apps since then and I found I could move them to the micro sd card ant app seems to run as normal. Maybe before Samsung made 4.4.2 available they changed something to work from the card. If you have any apps in the main memory that you have downloaded see if they can be moved to sd card. Some can and some can't. Depends on the developer.

Try moving a file or creating a folder on the external SD card with a non-Samsung file manager. You can't. Even if you could, only the app that created the folder or file would have access to it. I used to sync files on my N3's external SD card with my home server using FolderSync and it worked flawlessly on 4.3. Once I updated to 4.4 FolderSync spits out error messages every time it tries to write a file to external storage. This has been an issue since KK first landed on a device with external storage (which was the Google Play Edition SGS4 in November). It is what it is and, without rooting to change access permissions, can't be changed and affects every device equally. Thankfully for those of us that can't or won't root, Samsung at least provided some of their key apps with universal read/write permissions.
Here's what the "My Documents" folder created by Hancom on my external SD actually translates to on my N3.

And external storage appears just like normal within any app that's created files or folders there.
I think 32gb is much better.
I am using 16gb now. In my SD some data(lecturenotes, docs, ebooks) and 2 custom rom files. Even i have neither podcasts nor movies, but my SD have only 2gb space now. I think 32gb or higher capacity sd will be much better.
Never enough. I can't wait for 64 and 128 to become the standard.

The work-around to getting pretty much anything to external SD is Samsung's My Files. The challenge is moving huge files, that or moving a lot of files simultaneously that are collectively huge. There might not be enough free space on your internal storage to get the files on to your device. Here's a couple of ways of getting files directly to external storage. Like everyone else I'm not thrilled with the new external SD card restrictions but there are ways to accomplish pretty much anything. The only thing I haven't found a work around for is syncing. I ended up moving a bunch of apps and files to external storage so I could move my sync folders to internal storage.
You can setup a two-window instance of My Files and drag-and-drop content directly from Dropbox to External SD.
You can also use Samsung Link to transfer files from another Samsung device, a PC, or a cloud service (Dropbox, OneDrive, Box) directly to external storage. IMHO, Samsung Link is one of the most overlooked features Samsung provides. It's fantastic for managing and viewing files across devices. For example, I can take a picture with my Gear which transfers it to my N3. I can view, edit, and share the pic from my N10.1-14 or PC seconds later. Anyway, here's a screen shot of it.
