Rooted, Now Can't Update… 8.4 wifi - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

I rooted with towel root. Knox still shows 0x0. If I check of updates to the OS, I says my has changed and there are no updates. How can i reenable updates? Eventually, I'll install CM or something, but for now i want to install the latest.
I've had a few random reboots. They seem to be warm boots, because my uptime doesn't reset. I want to see if an updates fixes this problem. Other than this, eveeything has been great.
Cheers,
Rich

Ok, I did the following:
- unrooted (with SuperSu)
- did a factory reset
- rooted with towel root (again)
- ran SuperSu and left knox running
- reinstalled apps with TB
Everything now looks good. The "Check Update" no longer complains. I want to run this way for a little while. Will install CM in the future.
Cheers,
Rich

So you were able to take the latest OTA and you still have root and a custom recovery, and your Knox flag is still 0?

There was no OTA. So, still waiting to see what happens there. My knox is still 0x0 as i did not install a custom recovery. Towel root does not trip knox.
I'm on rooted stock. Knox is still running. I did not disable it with SuperSu. So far, no random reboots (10 hours)… very stable.
I will install a custom recovery and CM at some point in the future. I want to keep my warrenty intact for a while. I bought this tablet last weekend. I like it.

Rich

Gotcha. So what is your build number (from Settings/About device)?
Mine came with NAI installed. I don't know yet what build number it is going to install when I let it apply the OTA.

I just took the OTA. I am now on build number ND3. Just FYI.

Are you on a UK device? If so, I see from sammobile.com that the latest NF3 was released. You can download it and flash with odin. It will unroot, so you will have to re-root. I believe as long as you don't flash a custom recovery, the warranty flag will stay at 0x0. That way you don't have to wait for the ota update.

Odin passes but Root Checker says no

For some reason its passing in Odin and saying it worked. Go into the phone and phone isn't rooted. Tried about 9 times running Odin and its not working. It says in download mode that I'm running custom binary but its not installing Su Binary when i run Super SU. The CF-Auto-Root isn't also installing with this package.
I reverted back to stock 4.1 from 4.2 because it was not letting me use the OTA update fuction before this mess started so I thought I had to remove my root to begin with. Then after having many errors/crashes in 4.1 I had to factory reset then it let my update to 4.3. Well now I'm following the first post in the root with CF-Auto-Root thread and its not letting me "root" and install the SU Binary.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963812
Check out the last few pages of THIS thread. A few people claim to have gotten it done. Just be sure to read, and be sure of what going on before proceeding forward.
GOT IT!!!!
Thanks for the post it helped get my phone rooted, I had to follow the post you linked to get it rooted smoothly then this post |Guide|How-To| Root & Install Custom Recovery for 4.3 Update |22 Nov 2013| to get SuperSU and KNOX remover to get root working.
Seems the root was not taking with CF-Auto-Root like everyone else but TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip worked from TWRP. I just had pop ups in Android saying security policy update had blocked a app from accessing anything. Flashed the SuperSU app with the Knox remover from recovery then rebooted and TA DA! SuperSu worked and wanted to update my Binary.
Hope this post finds it way to other users stuck in the same boat I was in cause the last couple days I've been staying up HOURS trying to root my phone!

If you did the OTA update, then you should be aware that you now have the Knox bootloader on your phone. Do not, under any circumstances, try to Odin back to 4.1.2, which has a different bootloader, which will brick your phone. And if you flash cwm through Odin, it won't brick, but will void your warranty by tripping the Knox counter(triangle away won't erase this one). But to get root, simply flash PhilZ latest recovery for this phone through Odin, reboot to recovery, and flash SuperSu update, reboot, profit. Both links are on the rim op below. Make sure you have SuperSu downloaded before you reboot to recovery, and uncheck auto reboot and f. Reset Time in Odin. Good luck!

I have the same notice and I'm wondering the same thing. I've rooted using Stumproot and have TWRP, but have not installed any custom ROM as yet. Been using the LG skinning of Android and seeing if it works for me over the long term or not.
So - is this the L update? Will this blow up my phone if I try it? Normally I know not to take OTA updates if I'm rooted, but there's a chance it may just run since it's the stock ROM, but just rooted.
You will lose root of course.
If you have TWRP you will not be able to install this update of course.
There should be something more written, not just system update. What version it says?

That is normal what happened.
You have to downgrade now and then root it.
What version it says you have now after the update?
Xposed 2.6.1
Android 4.4.2
So I need to unroot and then do it again?
Okay, could you eplain more detail.
If you have xposed installed that means you are rooted.

No, this is not Lollipop.
If you have the stock recovery (not TWRP), and haven't deleted ANY of the factory installed apps, the OTA might work. But even if it does it will break root, and leave you with a phone that is, at present, unrootable.

I updated my sprint lgg3 (from ls990zv4 to zv6... That's the OTA update) and lost my root permissions. The Super SU (by chainfire) cannot find it's binary or something like that.
You may want to hold off until someone figures out an easy fix. The alternative is to unroot (refresh to stock) then do all the updates, then root.

I got a bit overexcited last night and blew my entire phone away to try out the lollipop, so.....
I'm in the process of restoring a nandroid of NK3 (since I realized I had way too much stuff to lose) and will try it when Its done restoring. I *THINK* you may have to use MOP and inject root into the full image to keep root if you're worried about Knox 0x0, but IDK; I've tripped Knox long ago .

Yes, I did that. Used MOP to inject itself and supersu. After starting for the first time, it asked to update supersu and the su binary.
When I did that, it tried updating the binary for some time and finally gave up. In short, I lost root even when I used that option in MOP.
I do care about knox status due to enterprise reasons. So I'll try to downgrade, re-root and upgrade again (to see I didn't do anything wrong.)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The method I refer to is what I used to update all previous versions and keep knox 0x0.
It has been discussed after every update and effortless comes up with a tutorial as well. Unfortunately, with 5.0, this doesn't work properly (no root).
Why... just WHY?
I had to download NK3 after midnight because this wasn't online and now I am going to update via Kies, JUST WHY!!!!
@toastido thanks brotha u helped me root my device. Cf auto root messed up my phone originally because it installs kitkat recovery at the end with your Odin flash able recovery I was able to use Cf auto root then before booting flash stock recovery. Right now I'm on completely stock rooted. Just what I wanted.
For those who want to upgrade from rooted kitkat to lollipop and keep knox 0x0 and root, follow the instructions here:

I was not able to get twrp to stick. Odin said it was done but never actually booted to twrp just the stock recovery came up. To root this is what I did:
1) be on lollipop update via Ota
2) flash cf auto root via Odin
3) reflash ob6 recovery that @toastido so graciously provided.(for some reason cf auto root reflashes nk3 recovery and my phone would not boot hence why I had to flash ob6 recovery)

I think that this is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/wip-android-6-0-marshmellow-t3219344
If I read Chainfire's notes correctly, this is only for systems running Marshmallow, which would let us out for a while. But....
Once Samsung updates our OS to Marshmallow or they get CM 13 working on our phones (currently a work in progress) this could allow us to use Android Pay on a rooted phone.

For the Knox part, someone with a "virgin" phone would need to test. Both Joe and I have already rooted using the current method, so Knox is already tripped.

Has anyone tried rooting with this method and trying samsumg pay?
Decided to give this a try. Odin flashed OL1. Booted OL1 with no problem. Odin flashed TWRP, without reboot. Rebooted directly into TWRP and flashed SU beta 2.65. It booted without problem with root access. When I go into SU, it says there is an update available, but I just cancel out.
I was hoping android pay would work as I could never get it to work except stock unrooted. I started android pay and got the message "android pay cannot be used." I realized I needed to unroot in SU. I did that and still get the same message.
EDIT: Tried it again. Odined OL1, rebooted and android pay worked fine. Odined TWRP, booted into TWRP, fine. Rebooted into rom, bootlooped at Samsung logo, over and over. Rebooted into recovery and flashed SU 2.65. Rebooted into rom with no problem. Android Pay no longer works.

For those asking about whether this root method trips knox or not. Yes this will trip knox. Anytime you use odin to flash non official Samsung firmware/software then it forever trips knox. Therefore flashing any custom recovery will absolutely trip knox... forever.
Samsung and Android pay apps will not work on rooted devices. Period. The pay apps are intended for official factory software for obvious reasons. Security is the main focus with these types of apps that deal with your personal banking/credit card information. Hence a rooted device is not considered "secure".
using this method and my S6 is rooted without custom kernel which i prefer.
however, it seems like i cant use titanium backup to restore any backed up apps. Titanium app just runs endlessly.

Info and DL on SuperSU v2.6x and Systemless Root
1. MUST flash a 100% stock (Odin) firmware.
2. DL SuperSU v2.6x
3. Install custom recovery
4. Install new SuperSU zip
5. Let it run through the process then reboot.

thank you. ill give it a try. :good:
This may be a weird question, but we don't have a stock kernel to flash. Would there be a way to make a zip of a stock kernel and then use this to get root? I'd like to have a custom ROM but with the stability of a stock Kernel. This is the first phone I can think of that I've owned that didn't have a stock kernel with root.

A few questions regarding OTAs

Hey,
I just got my 10 and loving it. I'm Locked and S-OFF with Sunshine running rooted stock.
I have a few questions:
- Will I still be getting OTAs notifications even though I modified system so I won't be able to install them?
- I have a TWRP backup from before modifying /system. What do I need to do in order to be able to install the update? Restore system and install through OTA? Do I need to restore the original recovery? Where do I get it? What's the best way to install updates?
- If I install Magisk, SU Hide and Systemless Xposed, will I be able to install OTAs without any issues?
Now an unrelated question:
- How do I get back to S-ON?
Thank you so much.
I have a unlocked HTC 10 running software version 1.95.401.4 Android 6.0..1 but I'm concerned why its running August 1 security update till now? It's almost end of October any one else with the same thing pls reply and help. The OTA says phone is up to date no new updates available.

Thanks a lot, that helped so much
Do you happen to know the answer to questions 1, 3 and 4?
1) Yes you should still get the notification and probably even download it, but not install it.

I'm afraid that won't be possible. Its a one-way ticket.

going back s-on is not recommended...but its possible:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Why isn't it recommended btw?
And I have another question too.
If I decide to debrand my phone, I do I get back to my original CID?

Not sure I understand the last question, but you change your CID the same way you initially changed it while being s-off
That makes sense (facepalm). Thanks!
