I have rooted my fire before using the method from this thread here. So I realized the main reason I wanted to root it was to get the marketplace. Now I know with 6.2.2 you could use "Superoneclick" then after installing the marketplace and changing permissions you could then use SOC(superoneclick) to "Unroot" the device and yet still keep the google market.
My question is, using the KF Utility for 6.3 by Teamwin, can you succesfully unroot the device and still keep the market like you could with 6.2 or has this ability been broken. As you can tell I have done some research and to no avail have found anyone saying how to unroot a 6.3 KF and yet still keep google market. Also, if this is possible is Google Play also possible and perhaps Google Books
Thanks (sorry if this is answered somewhere I did a search on the forum and didn't find anything to these specific items)
NOTE: I do know you can sideload apps but I heard sideloading the market is next to impossible without first rooting the device.

I understand that. I am trying to have the Google/Android Market be on the unrooted KF 6.3 OS. I would post the article but I don't have enough posts yet lol. The article is on Lilputing though. The article title is "How to sideload apps (even the Android Market) on the Amazon Kindle Fire". They are using SuperOneClick (which apparently doesn't work with 6.3) and in using SOC they quickly root the device, install the things they want, then unroot using SOC and keep everything.
My question is, is this possible on 6.3 using KFU or is SuperOneClick now supported for 6.3...
Yes you can. Root with KFU. Side load the market (google play) as a system app along with the Google framework and once every thing works download OTARootkeeper and install.
You can then unroot an re-root at will.

Ok. Thanks. I have heard of OTARootkeeper but thought it just mimicked a Root/Unroot device. I didn't know if that would work with 6.3. I am surprised there isn't an article out there discussing my specific question. I thought it would be a common thing to ask. Thank you though I will give that a try.
Edit: I haven't done this just yet to test but my end goal was to have the KF unrooted and still have access to the android market. Using OTARk makes it seem like if I want the android market I just "quick root" it back to get it. I may be misunderstood what "root" really means when it comes to the KF.
Here is a better way of explaining.
1. Download Google play store and Googleservicesframework. Apk
2. Move the Google play store to system/apps
3. Install Googleservicesframework apk like a normal application.
4. Reboot your device
5. The play store should work. Now you may unroot your device.

Thanks for all the help and clarifying. One last question. To unroot do you suggest using OTAKroot or is there a way to make a more "solid" unroot and yet still keep the play store? Again thanks for quick helpful responses everyone.
I suggest OTA root keeper. Its the only way I know to unroot your device. If you like the answer I gave you hit the "thanks" button

Ok so I have everything done however it's not the exact result I was hoping/expecting. I was wanting the main stock look of the KF but with the market installed and working. Right now I have unrooted but am having trouble figuring out how to get back to my Amazon KF stock launcher and my Amazon Prime videos.
Edit: I can't figure out how to get to my Amazon bookshelf anymore. I have the Amazon App store and Kindle App from the market but how do I get back to the amazon bookshelf?

You have to clarify a bit more for me...
1. Is the play store up and working?
2. Did you download any custom launchers?
3. Did you download any custom lockscreens?
4. The steps you took were root, installed market, unroot, correct ?

Play store is working. I tried Go Launcher to see if I could get the Default Launcher through there. No lockscreens. It is currently with CM7 unrooted via OTA Rootkeeper. But when I rebooted after unrooting it I had the CM7 android interface still. Not KF default interface.
This video is what I essentially was trying to accomplish. He has the Launcher.apk but it seems to not work on CM7 or at least not 6.3. Right now, I can't get to the instant video screen or bookshelf at all...

So you not only rooted but you installed a custom ROM.
That's a whole other story.
To get what you want you need to restore your original ROM from backup. Reroot with KFU. Side load the framework and market and unroot with OTA rootkeeper. You should have made a backup from restore before you installed CM7.
Do not repeat do not upgrade the kindle reader from the market if you wish to keep using the original launcher.
It would help if we knew why you wanted to be un rooted.
Rooting only gives you access to your file system. The only custom softwear you need is superuser. Unrooting with OTA rootkeeper just makes a backup of SU and then removes it. You can then watch movies etc. But when you need root back you just restore your SU backup in OTA rootkeeper.
Why do you need to permanantly unroot ?

Since you are loading ROMs, I'd recommend MoDaCo rom. It's the closest to stock with the play store already added.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916
Another option
Keep stock, root, add SU, (and add go launcher if you want) Just add a shortcut to the kindle launcher. Unroot. Then you can switch back and forth. Simplest way.
I sideloaded the market app with file expert when I was happy with stock.
Though I don't know why you insist on unrooting.

I guess I misunderstood what rooting really meant. So I can use KFU to root the device but after doing so DO NOT install CM7 and instead just sideload google market and once installed just use it to install any apps but at the same time since CM7 wouldn't be installed I would be seeing the basic interface from KF as it is stock?

Correct. You do not need to do anything after you root unless you want to. Everything on your KF will stay stock. I would recommend you flash a recovery (I prefer CWM) that way you can reload your backup if you need to. Whst I would do is root install firefirefire and CWM. Reboot to CWM and backup everything. Then load the framework and market. When you root make sure SU is properly installed before you move ahead. You will need a copy of root explorer or another file manager to make this all happen with the least pain.
Remember if you keep the stock launcher DO NOT update the kindle reader from the market. The stock KF reader is not the same as the market version but the market will see it as an old version and try to get you to update it.
I run both the stock launcher and go launcher. I keep a shortcut to the stock launcher on my go launcher dock and a shortcut to go launcher on my stock dock. I toggle between them as needed.

I followed everything except CWM. Is that something similar to KFU as far as how to root it or is that like the TWRP that I had before for recovery? And thanks for explaining all this.
It is like TWRP. A recovery program. I like it much better. But it does the same thing.

Ok. After some tweaking I now have reset the device back to factory settings. Re-rooted, used CWM for backup/recovery. I used the MoDaCo and successfully installed the Google Play store. Installed OTA rootkeeper and used it to "temp unroot" my device. I was hoping this would give me access to the "Watch Now" on the Amazon Video but it still is greyed out. Truth be told, I got the month free of Prime for getting the KF but I probably won't continue to pay. Regardless, is that the only feature that I can't get with the rooted device? If so, then I am to say, happy for sure.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to block amazon forcing you to update to latest netflix after upgrading the firmware?
Thanks to rbox I have all the necessary components to keep the file structure/firmware of 51.1.0.2 and be on latest 51.1.4.1, of course new netflix does not work on that, I removed and sideloaded an extracted netflix apk from older firmware for the FTV but amazon has something forcing you to update, it pulls up a message saying required update. Any way around this? I think the state i have my FTV in if I could launch the old netflix it would work, but I can't launch it without the amazon nag.
The reason I need to keep the old netflix is for some reason my FTV's do not play well with the new version at all, many errors/skips/fails to launch/logs me out etc. I tried latest 51.1.4.1 and still same issue. It's odd too cause I bought a new FTV from staples and rooted it and upgraded it before doing anything to 51.1.4.1 with new netflix and it works way better on that unit than any of my other ones. not sure why
Also, the new netflix will not put my FTV to sleep mode automatically after timing out. The old one would allow it to go to sleep mode while new netflix logs out of the user profile but leaves the app open and it sat overnight on netflix, This doesnt work very well for me. Any help/insight is appreciated!

It's two separate apps, so if you leave the new one installed, the old one will still work. Unfortunately it won't show up in the main apps list and you'll have to open it like other sideloaded apps.

Just tried that, it does show up as a seperate as you said, the problem is when I launch it, I get an amazon popup that says "Launch newer Netflix Instead. you have installed a newer version of Netflix. This old version is no longer supported. Please uninstall and launch the new version instead. And two options, uninstall now or uninstall later"
Also looking at manage all apps list now it only shows the old netflix, I think it overwrote the newer version or something.

That's odd. Originally, before I fixed Netflix... I let it update to the new Netflix, I used it and it didn't work, and then I did 'adb install' to install the old one, and went to the apps list and it "just worked". It could be that they've since updated something to prevent that from working... Why not just flash 51.1.3.0?

My other FTV's are on 51.1.3.0 for that reason, I had just flahsed this one with latest 51.1.4.1 in hopes new netflix would work any better than it did on 51.1.4.0, but it seems not much changed (for me). I wanted to keep the new firmware for some of the features, remote on phone, sleep button, prime music and whatever bug fixes etc they've done in the background, also moving forward I don't want to be forever stuck on 51.1.3.0. But it'll have to do for now I guess.
@rbox do you still happen to have the APK you adb installed that showed up seperately? I wonder if it's just my .apk I have

Ok, yep same place I got the one I have. I just re-pulled it and the /data/data folder just to see, same thing.

I hope this is the right thread for this -
I just updated to the pre-rooted 51.1.4.1_514013920 firmware. The new netflix app won't play anything. I tried uninstalling it, deleting it from the cloud, rebooting, and reinstalling. Still nothing.
Any ideas? I was fine with the old app if someone could point me to the APK. I unforunately don't have any other devices with the old APK.
I appreciate any help.

Nevermind. I ended up wiping and installing 51.1.4.0 because I don't think I ever did that. Then I reinstalled the boot menu and flashed .1 and everything is working.
I'll leave this here just in case anyone else makes the same bonehead mistake. Thanks for the hard work rbox, appreciate the rooted firmware releases.

Thanks for this. One step can be simplified by using ES File Explorer instead of Silk to actually download the 4 apk's - then they are in ES File Explorer in proper form already. Then just install them in the order shown, and Bob's your uncle.
I am using 3.6.6 and i cannot get it working. It allways tells me, "google play service closed" and i am not able to log into google playstore.
same happened to me so I just restarted and worked fine.
you do have to install in the correct order as in the video
I did that several times in exact that order but it is still not working. google play service is closed on reboot of the phone...
i also tried to install step by step and reboot after each apk, same problem.
Fire OS 3.6.6, locked to t-mobile, no root
if i install them in a row and open play store it says Gooogle-Service-Framework closed while trying to register my phone / log into my google account
this message is displayed 2 times, then i can put my account data an try to login, then "Process com.google.process.gapps was closed" 2 times
and then google playstore shows "no connection - try again" and this is where is gets stuck
reboot the phone: "Google Play-Service was closed"

Interesting, this was the same issue I have several weeks before - this was one reason I make my guide 'look and feel like...' Only with root
Must be an issue with the older firmwares...
The versions of Play services and Play store listed here are much newer than the ones (that I loaded successfully,) that are referenced on the original posts on this subject. You might want to try using the older versions and let them update.
Coming from 3.6.6 I could not get it run. After downgrading to 3.5 it didn't work as well. However, moving alls GApps to system apps, it finally worked!
From that experience, I am pretty sure that GApps without root may probably work on 3.6.8 phones, but not on the netlock 3.6.6 phones.

I would really like to do this, but 3.6.8 is not available for download. It is the firmware delivered with unlocked phones in the US only
Worked for two unlocked on 3.6.8. Thanks OP!
Apps from the play store seem to be working fine, but we'll see if I run into any issues. Seems too easy..
Well, you've done it. With this technique, the unlocked (that's the only one I tested this on and can verify it works flawlessly) Amazon fire phone is now the best deal in smartphones. Being able to run Google play services completely overcomes all the complaints everybody had with the fire phone, and at $230 with a 13 MP camera it's a fantastic deal, especially now that you can go download a better HD camera app from the play store. I would recommend doing this while you can, because no way in hell are Amazon / Google executives going to let this slide for too long.
Btw, follow the instructions exactly, then restart the phone for everything to work.
My phone got the 3.6.6 firmware. After I install the Google Apps, it will not connect to the store.
I do all the things in the first post, but it will not connect. Any solution for my problem?
Hi. Same problem here. We need 3.5.0 or 3.6.8 to install the Play Store correctly. Does anyone know a release date of an update?!
Thanks for the guide. I was able to successfully install the play store on an unlocked 3.6.8 fire phone and now I can download apps off it. Unfortunately, I can't find a launcher that will change the black background into something else. Do you know of one that does?

Vire Launcher sorta works
I was able to use this method to install the Play Store on my Fire phone running OS 3.6.8. I installed Google Now launcher, but have noticed that the battery drains much more quickly whenever I have other launchers installed. For one thing, even if you switch to another launcher, the Quick Switch menu (double-press on the home key) brings up the Fire Home Launcher as part of switching between apps and it seems like you have 2 launchers running at once which may explain the drain in part. Has anyone else noticed this?
You can use your own photos as wallpapers in Buzz Launcher, but no widgets. Only one I've found to date.

From what I've tried doing was install Xposed, but it won't update, and then install a module for Xposed which won't work unless you update Xposed.

Once I release recovery, I'm sure someone will write a guide to install gapps. I can confirm that google play services seem to function and the play store at least launches. I didn't have a keyboard plugged in, so I couldn't log in, but I'm sure it works. The one tricky part is actually starting the Play Store. It doesn't show up in the regular Amazon menu and going to the "Installed Apps" list in the settings wouldn't let me launch it. Had to use FireStarter and enable system apps for it to show up.

ok cool.. so I then dont worry about updating xposed and look for firestarter and see if it launches then from the installed apps menu, What about using a self powered usb hub plugged in and connect a usb mouse and keyboard. Would that do the trick? I would try now but off to work soon.
Installed latest version of firestarter and tried to launch from there. Same thing.. goes to the play store and i see name in top left corner and in center of
screen no connection / retry. .. should i uninstall the playstore and services, accounts, and reinstall? You said enable system apps in firestarter also.. I dont seem to see that.
Play store won't be able to connect until we can use the HDXposed module which will patch the content provider and download manager that blocks the play store (hopefully this still works on the FTV2).

This requires Xposed working and to install Xposed we need the recovery rbox is working on. Hopefully we can try this out soon. Sideloaded apps should be able to authenticate with the play service even without HDXposed..
Hey, just wondering if anyone can help, for the past week I've been trying to fix a problem with my Fire tv and have tried various methods to fix this issue. Basically I use Sloane 5.0.5 r4 ROM on my aftv 2, it comes with super su and the root does work as superuser requests pop up to allow or deny. However super su doesn't appear in apps (the GUI management tool) when installed (tried various versions of supersu from 2.4 to 2.7) and I try to launch it, it just takes me back to the home screen. From googling I can see a few others have a similar problem, some people suggesting kingroot(not keen to use that as it doesn't give me the same options as super su) some suggesting rbox will make an update to sort the problem. Although not something I know is definite. The super su works and it's binaries as suggested earlier but the gui tool is nowhere to be seen. Even tried changing sloanes rom and replacing it with another supersu version but this hasn't worked. Just to add more details im running TWRP recovery also!
Thanks.

It's something Amazon does to Android and SuperSU being a system app. I noticed the same problem with the Play Store. You might be able to launch it while in an alternative launcher and/or using adb shell.
Run a adb shell and fire up this one
pm path eu.chainfire.supersu
Just to check the installation path
Hey rbox! Many thanks for your reply, and well done on your effort with this rom, can't fault it except for this minor issue. Been tearing my hair out trying to figure out exactly why it all looks fine and well but won't launch. I was thinking of trying to install play store using xposed, was looking at a guide online and wondered if it would open through play store. Didn't realise I could use another launcher with your rom though. Do you know if there's others you know that understands amazon devices to come up with a fix, update etc? seems like you're the only one to make a rom so far for the aftv so I'm guessing it'll take time until everyone fully understands amazon devices and apply similar Android based roms. Thanks for your advice.
Here's what the path came back as, I did notice there's two different locations for supersu though.
correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know the supersu (the one that you just found) is the su binary but the GUI (which is responsible for the grant notification) is here: /system/app/Superuser.apk
I'm not 100% sure about it, so maybe someone could light up the dark
once sloane-5.0.5-rooted_r4 is flasheed can we update SU from play store?
Sure but you don't have to. Just take that one http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=eu.chainfire.supersu
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app

My experience is with Firestick.
1) On main Amazon screen, go to the App line and look accros there.
2) Connect Wukong Remote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkremote.client.en and you'll see the Apps selection at bottom.
I like to go into Supersu settings and the default to "Grant" and I like to turn off notifications.

thks cool app but i still cant open super su , dont know after reading some that you even can
Arghhhh. Think I've soft bricked my fire tv or worse! I was re flashing the rom and was cleaning the data before hand, I must of wiped the system and now I'm only seeing the amazon white logo when i turn it on... Tried to install recovery again since I can't even get into recovery but when going through preloader it eventually says error can't find target file. Tried to use fast boot but fire tv isn't connecting to try and install recovery etc that way! You guys got any ideas or have I totally broken the device? ???
Keep calm buddy, als long as the preloader is still working everything is possible. Did you try to Flash TWRP again?

Thank you so much! It saved the day! never will i ever be such a n00b and delete the entire system again. Also big thankyou RBOX for your guide and files to unbrick, they worked a dream. Everything is installed now, hopefully in near future someone manages to get SuperSu opening in the GUI lol im just happy I can actually use my fire tv again though!
