I rooted my Kindle Fire a year or more ago. I'm not a super user and simply followed a guide I found on Youtube. I don't even recall which one. Things have been working fine for months but the last time I tried to use my Kindle, it boots up to a TWRP v2.5.0.0 Menu (Install, Backup, Restore, Wipe, etc).
The only instructional guide I can find online is a step-by-step to unroot the Kindle for warranty purposes. I don't want it unrooted. I just want it usable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm traveling with my Kindle and laptop. This is not the machine I used originally to root the Kindle.
Thanks.
Tipsy
I'm not an expert as you can see by my post count, but if you can boot into TWRP then try to download another ROM and install it.
You can follow this guide on what to do, its the one I just used a couple of minutes ago and it solved my problems.sd_shadow's pre-root 6.3.3. 6.3.3 Can't be rooted yet but instead of using the link I posted you can try a modded stock 6.3.2 with root installed, but the ones I tried would try to update and cause it to reboot after 5 seconds. If you have a working TWRP and want it to be working right now you can use the link I put till someone who knows better replies since you can always re-flash the system with TWRP.
Use the mount options in twrp to copy my pre-rooted 6.3.3, to the sd card.
Unmount, and install, if you want latest rooted stock rom.
.
You will need to upgrade twrp if you want to try a current custom rom
I will go into more detail if you want.

I literally followed a Youtube tutorial step by step to root this thing initially and never thought about it again, so I'm really no at all knowledgeable about the process or the jargon.

By the way, perhaps I'm misunderstanding, or maybe my Kindle Fire is that much older, but I don't this device has an SD slot???

The newest roms are using the Project OtterX: TWRP and Bootloader
I made a [Video] OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [ROM 2014-05-08]
just use the current TWRP and bootloader here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671619
and a rom that says OtterX compatible like SlimKat,SGT, or CM11(posted in OtterX thread)
Okay, I watched your video. I'm over my head. I'm sure if I spent an entire weekend reading and researching, I could figure it out. But I don't have that much time right now. Is there a simple tutorial I can follow that will simply get this thing up and running?
Thanks.

In twrp unmount, home, install, select zip, swipe to confirm, wait, wipe cache/davik, back, reboot
Done.

Okay, I've down loaded your .zip file. I selected Mount in TWRP. "SD Card" and "Cache" are already checked. On the right, it says "Mount USB Storage." There is no option to Mount ADB.
Bear in mind, this laptop is not the computer I used to root the Kindle last year. Is there some kind of driver I need to install to the laptop prior to doing all of this?

Okay...I'm not really sure where I stand. I followed your instructions above. It's now booted normally, but the System Version shows 6.3.2_user_4110520. I was expecting to see Version 6.3.3?
Honestly, as long as it's functioning, I don't really care. But maybe I should try installing those drivers and repeating the process? How do I go about installing the necessary drivers to this laptop?
Thanks by the way for all the help!

Easiest way to install drivers is with kindle fire utility.

If kindle is connected to WiFi, it will download 6.3.3 update, then try to install, install will likely fail, and reboot to twrp. In the unlikely event the update installs, you will lose root, and need a fastboot cable to reroot

Just wanted to follow up. I'm finally back with the PC I used for the initial Kindle root. I once again followed the instructions in your video and reinstalled your rooted 6.3.3 OS v1. This time, there's no doubt it was successful. Thanks very much for your help!
Do I understand correctly that this should remain stable and the Kindle will not attempt to auto-update the OS, rendering the rooted OS inoperative?
Tipsy
It should be as stable as stock, just rooted.
It is safe from updating, only till next update is pushed.
If there ever is another update.
But if you have twrp installed, update should fail.

Okay...I think I screwed up. I was in the Play Store and there was a Go Launcher update, which I installed. From that point on, everything went down hill. Parts of the screen were obscured, preventing me from making selections and nothing in my Newstand was usable. Also, Zinio, the primary app I use, would not load.
I figured I should not have loaded the Go Launcher update, so I went back to "Install" and reinstalled your .zip rooted OS. But it didn't seem to bring me back to where I was the other day. And I still have the same issues (Newstand and Zinio don't function).
Any ideas?

I'm going to try to make a long story short
I downloaded a Jelly Bean ROM and the Amazon Update Stock ROM
I renamed the Jelly Bean ROM to Update.zip (there's my mistake)
I booted into TWRP recovery and applied Update.zip, when I rebooted I had Jelly Bean
No big deal right? I used Kindle Utility to reinstall TWRP, rebooted and was stuck on the Kindle Fire splash... No big deal right?
While trying to correct the problem, I went from not-so-bad to very terrible.
Eventually a fellow co-work built a factory USB cable for me I was able to finally get back to TWRP recovery, flashed the original stock ROM and when it rebooted, I was stuck on Kindle Fire splash again. HELP! Well I had the birght idea of taking all the knowlege I learned to get back into TWRP and was successful in doing so, I then re-flashed the Jelly Bean ROM... lo-and-behold, My fire booted into Jelly Bean
Now with all that said, I would like to know if anyone knows how to take the Kindle Fire back to stock from Jelly Bean, would it be the same as reverting it back if there were another ROM installed? As you can tell by all the problems I've had, I'm a bit hesitant...
Any direction would be apperciated
I went with this following suggestion and was able to get back to the stock look and feel

I just hope you did a backup before updating and so forth? If so, restore from that.
Otherwise, you'll have to do a Google search and try to find a zip of the stock ROM.

Wow lots of information there...
I did make the mistake of trying to flash stock rom and lost fff and twrp, I was able to recover from that by using a modified USB cable
I would like to go back to 100% stock even without root, I've had my Fire rooted from day one and don't really use any of the features that rooting unlocks, basically I use it to view Netflix and Amazon prime, play some games on it... I thought I'd use it for work but if work wants me to have a tablet, they'll buy me one! HAHA
If I decide to use the rom you suggested, I'll make sure not to use the version you said to stay away from
If I make a backup now, it's going to just backup the existing freshly installed rom. What's the difference between backing up the fire now and reinstalling the JellyBean rom?
I appreciate all your information

First of all you must flash gapps after your ROM secondly don't you have fff bootloader use that to enter recovery if you don't have fff will need to add it using kfu if you can't get kfu to see your kindle likely you will need to reinstall your drivers to do so
Daniel if you have a yellow triangle when you first boot hold the power button till it turns orange this will take you to recovery where you can flash jb gapps if you have a screen with white kindle and blue fire press your power button quickly a few times till you get a small boot menu at the bottom select recovery with your power button this will take you to recovery sorry you can't use smirkis unless you can get to recovery so completely disregard that
Thanks. I would like to flash gapps, but as I can not access recovery mode I dunno how to do it. I don have FFF, how can I install it once having JB 4.1?

If you have a problem with a device other than the Kindle Fire, please post in the relevant forum. You'll get better help there
So today was the day I wanted to root my Kindle Fire and then eventually install Jellybean on it. And of course I ran into a snag that I can't get out of. I'm not an expert on this stuff but I've read the threads 'Kindle Fire for Beginners' and also the 'How to Root....' threads.
I successfully installed the Kindle Fire Utility (0.96) on my laptop.
I installed the drivers to c:\kfu.
I connected my Fire to laptop and in the Device Manager, its listed as Android Device with the Android ADB Interface.
I ran the Kindle Fire Utility.
Here's my mistake....the first thing I selected 3 which was 'Install TWRP Recovery'.
Then a few more steps happened and now I'm stuck with the Kindle Fire stuck in TWRP. When I reboot, it goes straight to TWRP.
I've looked through different threads on the forum but just can't find something to point me in the right direction on how to fix this mess. Any help would be great.
Thanks.
Installing TWRP first is the smartest thing to do. If you're looking to install JB, there is no reason to go through the rooting process since all custom ROMS are already rooted.
So transfer whatever ROM you want to your sdcard. Wipe System and "Factory Reset", install the ROM and "Reboot System".
---------- Post added at 04:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:35 PM ----------
Before you do any of that, install FFF1.4 in recovery (not with KFU).

Thanks! I was able to get my Kindle Fire to boot back to the original OS. Since I"m new to this, are there any step by step instructions on how to install FFF1.4 in recovery mode?
I also ran into a problem where when I connect my Kindle Fire to my laptop via the cable, I'm not able to access the Kindle Fire folder throw my windows explorer. It just gets listed as an Android device.
Thanks again.

I have looked through the Kindle Forums and it seems I cannot find something that matches my problem, but if I missed the correct thread please link me to it if necessary.
So I've finally bricked my device after no problems since I've owned it. I had been on Twa_Priv's CM10 ROM and loved it and have had no problems whatsoever other than my lack of storage. I had a backup of my original rooted Amazon ROM on my device, and I planned on reverting to stock to start over so I can have a decent amount of memory. Little did I know, and I now learned my lesson for this, but without reading XDA before taking any action I went ahead and factory reset the device through the settings and left the room. I come back, for a second I see code running on the blank screen and then it reboots straight to TWRP.. That's when I checked my files and saw that when my KF was wiping files, it literally wiped EVERYTHING except for the TWRP folder of course., including important android system files a long with it. I've read similar threads where they were stuck with just TWRP, but from what I've read this is not the same.
If there is anything I can do to just get some form of Android running so I can revert to stock from there, I would be very much appreciative if someone could let me know. Thanks.
Will restoring the backup not do what you're looking for?
Well that's the thing, it even wiped my restores too somehow.. Pretty much at the moment my Kindle is like a really big flash drive with a screen :/
Do you want pure stock (no root, no TWRP, no FFF) or custom rooted stock (keep root, TWRP, FFF, and have Gapps included)?
For now just pure stock, I can always re-root and all the good stuff when I'm willing to move away from Amazon's limitations since I know the information is out there for how to do so.
Then again if I can get a custom rooted stock that would be fine too, I forget the Amazon app store doesn't have good applications.

Alright Thanks, I will let you know how it goes once I have everything downloaded and flashed
Sadly it didn't boot. It continues to just boot into recovery even after factory resetting and flashing the ROM.
When your device boots, do you see a blue Kindle Fire logo?
No, I just see the FFF logo and the power lights orange on its own and it goes straight to TWRP, I've even tapped the power to see if it was possibly stuck in, but it's not.
Download and flash FFF1.4.zip via TWRP and reboot. (don't wipe)
When you see the blue Kindle Fire logo, hold the power button until you see the boot options appear at the bottom.

Thank you so much for helping me get my kindle back to normal. I have not been able to figure out how to do that in 5 months. Is there a way that I can install android on it. I think there is a custom rom that I can use.

you installed FFF and TWRP, rebooted, and stock rom booted normally? If so must of been stuck in Fastboot mode.
Several Roms, posted here [INDEX] Kindle Fire Development *REVISED*
OtterX roms require following steps here OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [TWRP 2.7.1 2014-06-08]
Other roms will require a different TWRP version see my Kindle Fire Flashable Recoveries TWRP/COTR
remember to verify all files with md5 checksums see https://sites.google.com/site/sdshadowscollection/home/hash-checksums

If it looks more complicated than you want stick with old non-otterX roms

Ok. thanks again I did install the rom. If I need anymore help I will ask you on your youtube channel or post to this thread.
Hello everyone,
I just found my gen 1 kindle fire in a box and was looking at all the roms out today. I got the newest otterx and twrp installed without a problem. I am still in the amazon partition and have been trying to get adb to work before I change to the otter partition. I have windows 8.1 and got the kindle fire drivers v1.3.1000.0 installed. I see the device in adb but it tells me unauthorized and I cant seem to get it to not say that. I tried kicking it into fast boot but that gives me a unknown device(bad address) in the device manager and it wont let me give it a driver. I hope someone can help me out.
Solved By using windows 7 and the correct TWRP version
If your PC is running Windows 8
Drivers may not install correctly
Watch How to disable driver signature enforcement - Windows 8.1
use install.drivers.bat from Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.9

Ok I am trying to get that installed but I have a dumb question do I have to change the partition to the otterx type before I can use adb with the otterx twrp installed?
not sure what you want, when you change partitions all files in system, data, and SD card partitions are wiped.

if the question is 'is adb failure do to wrong partitions' no not likely
Thank you again for your help.
I guess what I am asking is do I need to change the partition type before the adb will not be unauthorized sence I have the otterx twrp installed. I am trying to install the version 2.7.1.0 but I cant figure out how. when i try in fast boot it gives me a unknown error. I still have a rom installed if that helps me I am just not sure how to install the correct version if I cant adb and I can fast boot and I dont see any files on the sd when I go to install in twrp.
if you didn't switch to OtterX partitions yet, see if old rom still boots, if so place OtterX twrp 2.7.1.0. zip on SD card
if you already switched to OtterX partitions, rom is gone
I am stating to think this is not going to work for me. I got the otterx twrp 2.7.1.0 installed and it is no longer unauthorized but now I tried to do a adb push of a apk and it gave me a protocol failure. do you have any ideas on that one?
Thanks
Hey Shadow
I just wanted to thank you again for all the help. I got to work and everything worked smooth on a windows 7 machine.

Thanks for all your help, Shadow. I have an old Fire I hadn't touched in a while, which I had flashed years ago and had an old Clockwork recovery on. I updated the recovery to TWPR, I switched to OtterX partition and now can't get adb to recognize the device so I can flash a new ROM. While trying to boot the old ROM (which stalls out from having no SD anymore) the device shows up under Device Manager normally, but booting into TWRP, the Windows 7 driver installation in unsuccessful and it shows up as "Amazon OtterX" under Device Manager with "!". How do I get adb working in order to install new ROM?
Thanks for your help.

Did you try a different USB port, on a different side of pc?
which twrp version?
TWRP 2.8.2.0. Tried another port and another PC with same results. Can I use USB OTG to flash zip?

Thanks. That does make it showup as an Android Device under Device Manager without any error, but adb still doesn't recognize any devices attached. Any thoughts? Thanks for all your help!
don't need adb If mtp works

if a removable disc doesn't show up in computer with other drives, you need to flash twrp 2.7.1.0 in bootloader
