im so sick of having a flag ship almost 800 dollar phone with bugs. SOOOO annoying.
a couple of questions first.
can I root without Knox tripping? its been awhile since i investigated.
is Cyanogenmod still one of the best?
does wi-fi calling remain working? (this is a must)
can i use google wallet?
im not so worried about knox anymore.. to fed up to care anymore.
so if the other 3 questions are a yes, then im ready to root. can someone point me in the right direction? this site is like info overload these days. lol.
thank you!
Three answers
You can root without tripping knox by using towelroot but that wont matter because it seems like you want a custom rom which will need a custom recovery which will trip knox. About Cyanogenmod, in my opinion it is still one of the best and i am about to flash it to my note 3. Lastly when i rooted my wifi calling still works but i used CF Auto root instead of towelroot but i dont think it will make a difference
i got root fine..
now is there a way to get google wallet working? i really dont want to use isis/serve

I've already returned a Knox tripped note 3 for warranty repair with no issues whatsoever.
Cm11 from about 6 weeks ago onwards have been running flawlessly for me. I go back and forth once or twice a week.
I have to say that nf1 had been incredible - fantastic battery, speed and stability.

Can anyone give me their opinions rooting right away vs waiting? I'm coming from a 2 generation ago HTC with root and unlocked bootloader, s-off. I'd hate to delay rooting but I'm wondering how things have gone lately in the Samsung world.
-If I wait, will there likely be another method of rooting that would somehow be better than Chainfire's current method? (Won't trip knox or void warranty or something along those lines)?
-Would I be better off taking any OTA's that are available upon getting the phone before rooting or could those OTA's prevent root if I take them?
Any other reason why someone might delay rooting?
I personally probably will root it if a method is available (haven't verified yet.)
Primary reason being is to make transferring from my previous phone a lot less painless with titanium backup.
Or maybe I won't, because it won't be long before I'd want to flash a custom debloated rom.
Decisions decisions...
the only reason to wait is you want to maintain your warranty. If you pretty good with figuring out issues, it may not be an issue.
Me, 99% I'm not waiting. If I have time, it''ll be one of the first things I do. If not, I'll do it following day.
I enjoy Samsung devices but they usually leave me no choice but to root to remove some of the bloat that I don't really want. So for me it will happen once a cf auto root occurs!
There is no root for sprint yet. Big freaking bummer.
I wouldn't worry about that at all. Chainfire has already released CF Root for like seven different models of the Note 4 - Exynos and Snapdragon models. I would give it a day or a few after official release of our Note 4 until we have root.
And anyways back to the OP - I will be rooting as soon as I get my phone and charge it to full haha. I'm going to need to erase like a million apk's from /system to get rid of plenty of the carrier and Samsung bloat.

Bah to root, im going to be busy working on recovery, to me thats far more important
as much as im gonna hate moving to a new device not having root i think i am going to hold off on root till a method that does not trip knox is introduced. Or a way to use the samsung dongle with knox tripped is introduced. I don't care about warranty but the limit to use accessories is a game stopper for me. I mean with knox flag stop the VR glasses from working. to many unknowns right now.

It that really true. If the knox is trigger using accessories such as the VR or Galaxy Gear watches won't work? What the heck? I thought knox was introduced by corporate people to have a more secure phone. Although the rooted use is a small portion of people, just seen short sighted to me.
I just rooted everything works good so far, used t-mobile's root with no issues.

Confirmed. The root located below seems to work on our Sprint phones.
http://download.chainfire.eu/571/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root-trltetmo-trltetmo-smn910t.zip
I'm hoping I can download the full ROM before I start whacking up my system.
So I imagine this root method will trip knox right?

Yep, works fine. TB is restoring my apps as I type this. Just choose "Normal" for SuperSU to update the binary. Don't forget to install the FixSD app to allow the correct writing permissions that they talk about in the T-Mobile forum.
Hi guys looking for abit of help on ROM and Kernels
Bought my tabpro 10.1 yesterday as it was very cheap.
Im coming from nexus devices so need stock as possible and fast etc. Any recommendations? Thanks
While ROM recommendations (comparisons, etc.) are technically allowed now, due to relatively recent rule changes, I'm still not a fan of them for good reason. Which is the best ROM (recommended ROM, fastest, etc) is completely subjective. And such discussions just devolve into a popularity contest.
ROM choices are very limited for the 10.1, anyway. Just pick one or a couple that look good, and flash away.

The KNOX flag will be tripped, but folks on here claim it doesn't have anything to do with warranty.
Personally, I've always considered the warranty on any of these devices to be somewhat of a possible sacrifice to be able to use the device how I want, flash ROMs, etc.

Well i voided both my nexus warranty's within 5 mins via flashing but i could set them back if i so wished to.
I may run it normally for a month to make sure of no hardware issue's and then mess with it
I picked it up for £200 so not too much anyhow with my nexus 7 being sold to fund it too

Its a good idea to do so. Although I don't always get anywhere close to a month. I unlocked the bootloader on my HTC M8 the day after I go it, since I couldn't stand the carrier bloatware!
But I actually lasted pretty long with my Samsung tablets before rooting (WiFi only, so no carrier bloat).

I would recommend CM11. It works great on my 8.4" model, and looks supported on yours, too: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Picassowifi_Info
(Assuming you have the Wifi-only. I don't believe the cellular ones are supported)

Investigate Towelroot. I put CM11 on my tab pro 8.4 a long time ago and have never looked back, but many Samsung devices can be rooted with Towelroot without tripping the Knox flag.
I do not know if TR supports your device.
Installing a ROM will trip it, but with rooted stock you retain your warranty and you can get rid of things you don't like about the stock OS more effectively than without, plus make backups of apps with Titanium.

Towelroot only work with Qualcomm Snapdragon, and I also believe Framaroot is a dead end. The 10.2 and 12.2 wifi are both Exynos 5420, why your only root option, currently, is CF-Auto-Root. Yes, you will definitely trip Knox. However, there's a possibility that [root] Triangle Away can undo it, but it might only work with Snap and/or earlier Exynos as well.
Anyone tried Lollipop on these yet? I picked up an 8.4 yesterday and am curious to try the latest and greatest.
Are they even getting lollipop?
Think they are slated to get it. No reason it shouldn't work on them.
Update:
I found the Odin files at SamMobile, so that's a comfort. Shouldn't be any problem going back to ANIE but it might make more sense to just hold off until ANK2 gets integrated in some roms...or Lollipop release... that said, I'd still like to know if the ANIE CF-Auto-Root will work on ANK2 firmware, or if it's specific to the firmware listed, and if there will be an issues or lag as others have reported, or if that is a phone issue unrelated to root.
So I rarely post, but a couple of days ago I shattered my Note 2 digitizer. Long story short, it was cheaper (sort of) to swap from the old $80/mo plan to a $60/mo plan with easy pay for the Note 4. My situation is this: I've almost never gotten a phone when it first comes out. So I have a few questions I didn't see answers to.
1) CF Auto Root...Chainfire lists it as supporting ANIE firmware, but not the current update...ANK2? Does it work? Are there still issues?
2) Somewhat related to question 1, but the development seems stagnant for the Sprint Note 4 just 2 months after it says the phone was released. Is it because people are staying on the Note 3? Perhaps it just hasn't picked up yet? I have 14 days to return the phone, so I'd like to go where the action is while I still can.
3) I've been seeing people mention a lot of problems after rooting their Note...lag and such. Is it something I'd be better off waiting to do? It was never an issue with the Note 2...any insight as to how exactly installing busy box even could cause these issues?
4) Rooting trips KNOX. Knox is a physical (not purely software) indicator of tampering, I've seen? Does this matter? Does it void Sprint's TEP, etc.? I don't anticipate needing it, but nobody that loses or damages their phone typically does. Is there presently a way to ODIN back to stock, is there a yellow triangle hanging over my head constantly, etc. if I were to only root the stock ROM and not install a custom one? I realize a flash back to stock will not reset a physical trip of KNOX.
Thanks for taking the time to read through and lend a hand - as I said, I rarely post and try to find this stuff for myself. But it's been a bit much to track down and some of the questions don't lend to specific enough search terms.

Appreciated! What do you mean the current custom roms are supported, though? If they're based on ANIE, when I flash them wouldn't it overwrite NK2? I'm talking software not baseband/modem.

1)CF Autoroot works on the new build
2) A lot of devs from the Note 3 didnt feel it was worth the upgrade, but there are several talented devs on here..
3) Only lag had to do with xpose and it's a easy fix
4) Ive tripped Knox and had no issues what so ever with getting a repair or replacement from Sprint

Lag due to xpose...so I need to install the Xposed framework? I was hoping to simply root and leave everything else stock, if possible. Or you mean the custom roms using Xposed framework had to make a fix for it?
Thank you! Very much appreciate the response!
Update: Got it rooted, installed Wanam Xposed, enabled the Secure Storage bypass thingy for S Health and Private mode, as well as disabling ro.securestorage in build.prop. Success I hope. Thanks again for the push in the right direction guys!
So I want to switch from my s5 to the 6E but is it really worth it to get over the regular 6 in your guys opinions? I have the 64GB in Black probably. And coming from an S5 to the Edge, is there any major differences on this phone while using ODIN to root? Anything I should be aware of before I try to root the phone, or what recovery should I be using.... I dont not want a brick lol and just want to be on the safe side. I haven't done this stuff in over a year so I feel very far behind everyone else. Thanks
Edit- I also have a macbook so will I be affected at all trying to root my phone?
If you can use a stock phone that works great out of the box, with all its premium features working, that can make /receive calls all day, text, multitask like a boss and take super photos like a premium camera and have a unique look that NO Other Phone has. Get yourself a GS6 Edge.
If you want root and custom roms & features, stay with your S5 until the Dev's figure out how to get past the bootloader securities that Samsung has put in place to prevent anything custom from being flashed to the phone.
There are procedures for rooting and custom recovery that claim it works but you trip Knox, lose fingerprint scanner, lose call audio and some other stuff I can't remember right now.
??? In my book they don't work. ???
Balls in your court.
I was looking forward to root, but not until it's foolproof, for now I'm really enjoying my Gold stock GS6E with great battery life and a look that everyone wants to touch.

Pretty much the current story is:
- Want root on 5.0.2 without tripping Knox? No problem, so long as you haven't upgraded to 5.1.1 (OF6) yet. Reasonably high chances that new phones are shipping with 5.1.1 already.
- Want root on 5.1.1? You'll need a custom kernel that disables dm_verity and sets SEAndroid to Permissive. But flashing a custom kernel will void Knox.
- Want root on 5.1.1 but without tripping Knox? You'll need an engineering bootloader before flashing anything. Side-effects currently include: no fingerprint scanner. In-call audio seems to be working now, if you're running the correct [custom] kernel for your device.
- Want root on 5.1.1 without tripping Knox and without any side-effects? Too bad.
- Want root on 5.1.1 without any side-effects, and don't care about Knox? Easy, and it's working great.
Edit: Forgot to mention, if you're on a Verizon or Sprint device... good luck. Last I hear, due to locked bootloaders, 5.1.1 = no root whatsoever.
Don't forget any new phones recently purchased after June update will only have 5.1.1 firmware. No 5.0.2 .
Pp.
Stay with your GS5. Development for this phone (S6 and S6e) is going at the speed of fart. I'm a flashoholic. I've owned the phone for less than two months and am already extremely bored with it.

I mentioned that, kinda.
They're just 2 different phones. Not even sure there's such thing as better. S6 will have faster updates which i think is due to elimination of sd card support and sealed battery which people find as a detractor. Camera is better with s6 and has silent option without turning off all phone sounds. Quick charging on a regular sized port is good on S6. I like the edge for lazy scrolling of not reaching around the bezel on S6 Edge. I do think the screen looks nicer on the S6 as well. I'd really say to play with it at the store and decide. I use my wife's S5 for stuff and find that it's just fine. Not brave enough to test the waterproofing on a phone that's not mine, but my friend in Cali takes pictures in the pool with his and I think that it's a good feature as long as nothing goes wrong.
Thanks guys for the quick replies!

Great info!!! Will keep in mind all of this. And I'm on Tmobile... Will prob wait for the devs to get this figured out. I like flashing roms due to less bloat ware and usually a good solid battery life.

The ROMs will probably be mainly TW-based if the Exynos thing hasn't been overcome for AOS/KP.
S6 edge. I rooted this bad boy and tripped the Knox no problem and using a stock rom which is much faster with awesome battery life.

Yeah so I was on OFE, rooted and custom romed. My phone started acting up. I took it to the Sprint store hoping the guy wouldn't notice my root, and order me a new device so I could use Samsung Pay. I know, half baked plan. Well he was able to fix it, by reflashing stock. So now I am on G920PVPU3BOI1. No root. No customer recovery. And of course, knox still tripped.
After all of this I have questions.
1. Is anyone currently testing a work around for this Samsung Pay/Knox issue?
2. Is it possible to root my phone on this firmware?
3. Customer recoveries supported?
4. What ROMs are giving you guys the best battery life? (work retail and almost never have a chance to look at my phone, but run Pandora on a Bluetooth speaker all day. Looking for over 17 hours off the charger)
Oh and if you guys could explain this in a noob-ish way, that would be great
Thanks, JD
