[Q] Low volume with Dirty Unicorns 4.4.2 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi everyone,
Tried a few ROMs for the T989 and for me DU is the most stable and feature rich so I'm sticking to it, the only downside is the low overall volume: ringer, notifications, loudspeaker, etc.
Is there a workaround I'm missing?
Thanks!!

I'm not very familiar with Dirty Unicorns. It was always on my list of Roms I should try. But anyways, on Cyanogenmod we have DSP Manger, which controls audio effects. Does Dirty Unicorn have one? Is so you may want to play with the settings and see if you could fix it. If it doesn't have one I'm sure there's a fantastic one on the play store.

I forgot to ask. Did you ever try the volume on different Roms you installed?
I guess DU isn't the most stable ??

Thanks for you reply.
With all the roms I tried before settling for DU volume was not an issue, but on many the GPS lock was horrible. So far it's been very stable and y really dig the lockscreen expanded notifications which I couldn't get working with other roms.
Dirty Unicorns does not come with a DSP manager (or I haven't found it) but the few apps I've tried (like volume boosters or DSP managers) didn't make any difference.

I'm always glad to help.
Have you tried PacMan? I recently was using thus Rom and it was fairly stable, had various customizations, and was pretty feature filled. It had locksreen notifications.
Well considering it wasn't an issue on other Roms, it isn't hardware related. Are you running on the latest build? Did you do a full system wipe when switching between Roms? You can always try reflashing the latest DU build after wiping the cache, this may fix your issue.
Have you looked on the thread dedicated to the DU ROM? This may be an issue the Dev is aware of. If he hasn't stated knowing this and nobody had pointed it out, it would be wise to post your issue in the thread. Its possible someone might offer you a solution or confirm the issue on their device.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it for the last week with mixed results but today it became very laggy and some GPS apps (as Waze) would not run. This ROM does have better volume than DU but it's way slower.
Right now I'm switching to the latest stable Paranoid Android ROM released today, I hope it's stable, fast enough and with good volume.

Always happy to help. I don't play around much with apps that rely on GPS so I am not sure which have the most stability GPS wise.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

After trying a few more ROMs (AOKP, PA, Carbon) I think I'll just go back to DU and try to boost the volume of the ringtone and notification files before uploading them to my phone.
Thanks for the help!

[Q] Cm7.10 to buggy, best nightly after?

Hi guys, the last cm7.10 looks very buggy, so can anyone recommended me a nighly with the least bugs and stability?
thanks
In what way is it buggy? I've been running 7.1 since it was RC1 and now stable release and i've found no bugs. Everything works perfectly for me.

I've read the feedback from members with lots of threads and a lot of them are saying they are having various problems like gps, bluetooth, in call volume etc, so was wondering if there's a decent nightly after the lastest stable with minimum bugs??
Cany anyone in the meantime confirm that the latest cm7.10 rom has: theme chooser, call blacklist feature, and screenshot feature in the power menu??
Much appreciated thanks
If anything, nightly will have more bugs. but to be honest the rom is very stable. The first time you turn GPS on it takes a while but after that it's fine. In call volume is ok for me. I think the mentioned problems arise from people not wiping properly before they flash.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I'm not sure about the blacklist feature, but theme chooser is there, and screenshot is there too.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
I can confirm that the blacklist is also there. And I also think that CM 7.1 is very stable. I've used it since RC1 too and I've never had problems with bluetooth, gps or in call volume. The only bug I've found is that push notifications for new versions of CM is not working.
Thanks for the comments guys, can someone tell me what are the push notifications? And are there any seperate fixes for this and the the slow gps??
I will be switching from oxygen, so I would just need to ensure I do a clean wipe? When u say properly wipe what does it include? Thanks
I may be completely wrong about this, but I think the reason the first time using GPS is slow is because it needs to configure your location for the first time. After that you should have a quick GPS lock every time.
When wiping you should do factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache.

PRO & CON of using CM/AOSP based vs Stock Samsung based ROMs

Before this latest incident, i had no preference if i were running a CM9/10 ROM or a Samsung based ROM
but the last week or so, my Radio went wacko and regardless of which ROM flashed or which version of Radio I used, the problem wouldn't go away.
The problem being having to manually pick a Cell phone provider manually after each reboot. (It has been working fine for the past 2 years, until recently.)
So, knowing that I could have easily ran this command to fix it
"dial *#*#2263#*#* to set "WCDMA 1700 preferred"
But!!... while trying that realized the CM9/10 and AOSP based ROMs do not work with those commands, as they are only available when you use the Samsung based ROMs like Dark side for example.
So, a quick fix which would have only taken 2 min tops to do, took me a good few hours, as i had to backup, flash back to a Stock ROM, go through those annoying setup wizard, run the commands, rebooot, make sure the settings sticks, then, back to CWMR again, flash back to CM whatever version, again do the annoying setup wizard, and reboot a couple times to make sure the radio is still working, before restoring the backup.
so that was a huge time waste, huge time consuming process
even if you did have a CWMR backup, it won't save you much time, the Restore Process actually takes longer than a clean flash
So, after this experience, I'm now much more inclined to stick with ROMs based off Samsung Stock ROMs
That's the PRO part.
The CON part of using Samsung based ROMs, too much junk and useless crap, included, also, it'll eventually lose support altogether from Samsung after a few more releases.
That's where the PRO part of using CM based or AOSP based ROMs takes the spotlight
I ponder if there's a way to enable those Secret Codes on the CM / AOSP based ROMs
--- EDIT ---
Another important PRO of stock Samsung based ROMs is the Hardware Acceleration for most video formats, while AOSP / CM based ROMs only supports a few
to mod or not to mod...
I agree with your viewpoint. I too, have thought this through, the long term decisions of which side of the coin to pick. Ultimately, the Samsung supported side will be phased out and the dichotomy with be solve for you. Besides, using technology is frustrating and time consuming; plus just to put icing on the cake, your significant other will be always *****ing you spend too much time "playing with your tech". That is until she/he breaks their toy and then it's like "what do you mean it's not fixed". Sorry, for the tangential nature of this reply, but this is how it is with me and most of my friends. Good luck living with technology.

Are those codes nestled inside an apk? I remember on my s3 I saw an apk which seemed to sound like the codes based off it's name. I currently am on my s2 right now though so I can't check.

nope, you type those in manually on the Dial pad to execute
the Apps you are talking about are just for people that doesn't know these secret codes by heart or saves you time by not having to search it here in the forums
I get your point and I am basically using the same setup as you and I do not have trouble getting signals. I've always used telus tlle4 radio. With that being said aokp/cm10 based roms have so much more customization that I don't even consider Samsung based roms as an option. I just can't!!

TW:
Pros-
Everything Works
The base is slow moving, so easy to fix problems when devving.
WiFi calling +++++
Cons-
Harder to customize
Almost never ever get new features, unless you make them yourself.
Obsolete software
Aosp based:
Pros-
Easy to build and edit source
Updated constantly
New features and software available immediately
Cons-
Buggy at times
Minor issues go ignored
No WiFi calling
Random reboots in class and buggy vibration control that distracts your professor repeatedly.
I'm a flashaholic, so I switch back and forth between aokp and romchicago

Indeed, i too find myself jumping back and forth between both side of the fence
...so hard to choose which side of the fence to stay on permanently.
I like AoSp. Only cons, to me, is the crappy calendar and camera(how I loathe thee)
I much prefer a touchwiz camera. Also the swipe to call or text is nice on the TW Roms.

I prefer the AOSP (TW ROM) because of stability but I keep going back to ParanoidAndroid or AOKP JB to try the new features.
Try using TWRP is way more convenient (at least for me it is) if your constantly flashing different ROMs
Pros using TWRP:
- Fast ROM backups and restores.
- Queue multiple zip files to flash.
- UI is user friendly.
- CWM zip files work on TWRP.

Is it time for JellyBean?

I have been using various TW based ICS Roms for sometime. Darkside, Infamous, etc. I have been so excited to use Jelly Bean and try out project "Butter" I notice there is an official stable release for Cynogen mod 10. Is it time to flash? I get anxiuos about it because I delt with an old HTC HD2 for a year and there were lots of "work arounds" and such. It became rather annoying. So I really like BLN notifications, and having a camera that "Just Works" and decent battery life etc. Are these things I am going to sacrifice. And also, if I wait until there is an official release of JellyBean for our device over the next couple of months would we see more stable builds shortly thereafter? Would it be worth waiting another month or two? or is time for JellyBean? Just curious what folks thoughts are about this? Who is using what? How it works etc? I am really looking for a DD something I can be happy with awhile. I can always just do a Nandroid and hope for the best I guess lol. Thanks for any input!

Definitely try CM10!!
You will fall in love.
I know exactly what you are saying about being hesitant because you want something that just works, without a bunch of additional issues to fix.
I always seem to find problems with other other roms that push me into looking for something else, NOT HERE!
CM10 is just so polished, It even fixes things that didn't work in any TW rom for me such as being able to send / receive MMS while connected to wifi.
It even has BLN built in and activated from the start.
I must say that CM10 + T989 = THE BEST phone experience I have EVER had with any phone.
I was getting so sick of going through so many wrongs, always to end up having to settle with some negative.
Everything just works with CM10 on our phone, and works well at that.
I finally dove in with the nightly CM10 builds about 2 months ago and now the official CM10 release.
Not a single lock up, force close, reboot, glitch or problem here in the last 2 months.
Battery life is really good, phone is smooth and fast, and most importantly it's super functional.
Everything works so much better for me than with any of the TW roms.
I love how CM10 is minimalistic and fast, yet has so many functional improvements and additions.
In my opinion it is hands down the best rom for our phone.
I think the fact that there is an entire team of developers working on CM is what makes it so good, it's not just dependent on one person like most roms.
Flash CM10... fall in love with your phone all over again!!
And after you flash CM10, flash this GAPPS http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

With how easy it is to do a backup/restore of phone these days, I find it easiest just to backup what I have and dive in to a new rom because the worst case is that you have to spend 5 minutes for it to restore if you don't like the new rom. Good luck! Hope you enjoy it!

So I did it ! ! ! ! I like it so far. The aesthetics are very nice and I did miss the customization of Cyanogenmod. The only thing I notice right off is the BLN notification is craaazy. Thats a good idea. I just read in the Cyanogem Mod Stable notes that the kernel was tied into the ROM very tightly especially with project butter. Whatever that means. So maybe I will try another kernel. Do you use an app or just the system settings?

I have not had any issues with the gallery, camera, or video recorder whatsoever. In fact, I took over 200 photos and 10 videos at a concert this weekend. I haven't seen any issues with it in the CM10 thread either, so I know it's not a common CM10 problem. Are you running the stock CM10 camera, or have you tried flashing the 4.2 camera? I know the 4.2 camera has some issues, thus why it's not stock on CM10 yet. I would say, try clearing your camera / gallery cache. If that doesn't work, you may have a bad flash. Make sure you wipe data / reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, flash the rom, flash gapps, clear cache / dalvik again, fix permissions, then boot into CM10. Never had a problem doing it this way. I'm using 2.2.2 (i think) TWRP touch recovery. As far as the outgoing call issue, I have not had that issue either. Occasionally someone can't here me when they call me, or I can't hear them, but not very often. I had this issue on stock and every rom though.I think it's just a Tmobile issue. I'd say try some different radios. UVLE1 has been good to a lot of people.

AOSP question?

I keep switching between Twiz and AOSP because of two big problems I'm having with AOSP 3.4.x based ROMs.
1. Call quality is poor often.
2. Most if not all custom kernels are causing SODs.
3. AOSP Messaging client doesn't send MMS through WiFi. I have to shut off WiFi and leave the toggle for data on. (Is this normal?)
I have clean wiped (wiped cache, dalvik, system, etc) before each of my installs of AOSP based ROMs.
Additional information : I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.0 and the latest modem. I'm not undervolting when the crashes occur or when poor call quality happens.
Thanks for your time and please let me know of theres other information I can give to assist you in assisting me.

It is a 3.0 kernel and I have no complaints from people on call quality. If you would like I can dig up the link for you.

Someome who can compile a rom and such always baffles me when they have questions lol, if you'd like I have LiquidSmooth rc2 with my headphone fix (headphones were broken cause of the usr/keylayout and I stumbled across and fixed it, so that you can control calls and changing music tracks and such) that was the only bug I saw with rc2 so its my go to stable AOSP rom. It is a 3.0 kernel and I have no complaints from people on call quality. If you would like I can dig up the link for you.

Please do. And lol, yeah I can be quite a noob sometimes. Compiling a ROM on Linux is easy though, it doesn't require any particular skills other than reading and following directions. Until you run into a stupid error, than you spend about 5 hours on that one error alone.

ROM help...decisions, decisions.

OK, I'm currently running CM 10.2 Linaro build and I love it but there's a few quirks that are gradually becoming irritating. I want to try a new ROM and I'm having a hard time choosing. Right now, I'm looking at Dirty Unicorns and ReVolt. I have a few things I need to know before giving either a shot though. Are there any known issues with either? Like, MAJOR issues? Like MMS/GPS not working, stuff like that. Also, before flashing CM 10.2, I flashed the Google camera and I kinda regret it, photosphere doesn't work AND I'm stuck at 8mp.
Any other ROM suggestions are welcome. I've also ran beanstalk before too

Droidmk has a Slimbean build on his Dev-Host. Haven't tried the new AOKP-based ROMs (Carbon, Dirty Unicorns, Revolt, etc) because I actually don't like their set of options versus CM's set of options, but they may have gotten better performance/battery wise. Super Nexus 4.3 is good. MMS worked on almost everything I've tried, so there's that. Dunno about GPS though, I don't use it.
Edit: Also, don't forget about our 4.2.2 ROMs as well. I know they are old and still have the camera focus issue, but the performance and battery is WAY more worth it than 4.3. At least, to me it is.

I really wanted to try supernexus when I first started flashing. Can you tell me your experience with it? Bugs and all?

Super Nexus 4.2.2 had some MMS issues; some MMS would come in, sometimes they wouldn't. And Super Nexus 4.3 has the nasty SMS bug where texts wouldn't send over 160 chars, and the SMS zip fix didn't work for me.
I edited my post right before you posted so maybe you didn't see what I added, but don't forget about the 4.2.2 ROMs. Despite being old, they perform extremely well aside from the camera bug. I wish I could get the same battery life out of 4.3 like I could with 4.2

Cm 10.2 has the same SMS bug. Its one of those quirks I was talking about in the OP. Hmm...I'll put it on the list. Thanks

Another option for the not splitting after 160 chars is to just use a 3rd party sms app. I know that go sms has an option that will manually split the text for you
