[Q] 3 GB apps limitation (7 and 7a) Free our memory - Oppo Find 7 and 7a

Hi ,
because of a strange memory partitioning the Find 7 and 7a are limited to 3gb memory for both running and installing the apps.
I've been using a S2 with cyanogen and a 2 GB partition so i know from personnal experience how annoying it is to not have enough memory to update or install apss.
Theoretically you could repartition the memory, but it's not for the fainted heart especially for a telephone as young the find 7.
I still find the phone attractive and i'm ready to order it but i wo'nt till i'm not sure that the 3 GB limitation can be circumvented.
On the Oppo forum there's a thread about that (Free our memory).
I've have almost no hope that oppo will deal with the problem.
So people, right now what are the options and what are are the consequences of repartitioning ?

There is a thread in development, where you can do it yourself (fairly easily by the looks of it).
I'm gonna do this when I get home from work, but you can ofcourse try yourself already: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2796232

hey bobalamer,
i am the person who started the "FREE OUR MEMORY MOVEMENT" and i hope i have your support on the oppo forum..
it is a terrible issue with this device and there seems to be too many reasons/answers why oppo went down this road,
there are people/devs at this very moment trying to resolve this issue so we may get a work around but it could be easily solved by oppo themselves...so if we are lucky and pressure them as much as possible than maybe something will get done...as these are awesome devices and they would be unstoppable with a unified memory partition.....

Dr mrsynister,
when you write things like "these are awesome devices and they would be unstoppable with a unified memory partition" it always makes m smile.
Those phones are already yesterday's news for oppo.
They are already working on the next model and they wo'nt correct this default.
If you're serious about putting pressure on them , then you have to spread your "movement" outside oppo forum.
You have to follow them everywhere, to alert them publicly on their twitter account; facebook pages , google + etc...
The problem is not so much the partition on the find 7 than the inabillity to listen their customer on the find 5 / find 7a and now find 7.
A thread in a forum is not a movement, i'm sure you can do better than that

Restore true full UMS access to JB S3 ?

man this mtp crap is getting so freaking old. only one process can run at a time you can view content on the device AT ALL (it downloads it to the computer first)
man it truly SUCKS hard core. has anyone found a way to put UMS back into play FULL UMS internal and external sd just like it was before. I miss my UMS and Automount so badly.
I do believe mtp is the way of ics and going further and the hardware. Ums is of the past get used to it or plug your ext sd card into your pc to transfer files or do wifi file transfers.
I do not understand how anyone van see mtp as the future as it is such a massive downgrade in performance and capacity its nearly unusable
single throttled stream only zero live view access
it is flay out horrible and had absolute zero redeeming qualities
it does nothing better and everything worse
what qualities do you see in it?
I have yet to find a single good quality yet

Hey i dont agree with it but if the hardware and software can only use ums what are you gonna do.
except this has absolutely nothing to do with hardware to the best of my knowledge. its 100% software.
i mean its truly horrible. its not just inconvenient its nearly UNUSABLE in many ways
I can't even VIEW a file on the phone or card with mtp !! "ONLY" copy them to the computer THEN view them.
and when you do copy a file you are STUCK their. you can't do anything else AT ALL until that copy operation is done.
if JB was not so darned nice and required for some functions on the S3 I would be itching for a way back to Ginger just to get UMS back and you can bet I will NOT be upgrading any of my ginger devices to ICS or JB if it means losing UMS.
Wait a sec... are you saying the file access modes are android version specific and not handset manufacturer specific? I thought it was just a Samsung deal. (A very unpleasant one)
Sent from my handheld awesomeness generator using Tapatalk deux
yes. I am pretty sure this is ICS/JB specific and NOT manufacturer specific.
and yes it hard core sucks. a better solution is to let us allocate so much space to be "app" space ie make it a dynamic user setting and GO BACK to full UMS. MTP is truly truly horrible.

[Q] Kitkat and SD Cards - Is it really an issue?

Hi All,
I'm thinking of picking up a One M8, coming from iPhone. The one thing that's bothering me is this whole deal with Kitkat and SD Cards.
So you can no longer have apps installed on the SD card, correct? How the hell do people deal with this? It's hard to get a device with > 16GB of storage, and if you use any large apps (like games, for example) you'll be running out of space in no time at all.
Is this really the issue it sounds like to me, or am I missing something. It just sounds to me like if this was right, Android gaming would be dead - yet there are numerous large (in both file size and development effort) games on the store. Devs wouldn't be making these games if no-one had space for them.
What am I missing? How do people work with this limitation?
Cheers,
DF

Really confused about this phone

I just got this phone today (I live in Thailand if that matters). I have the 64GB version. I have had Sony, Samsung, Motorola phones in the past and that is what I am used to. So first thing:
How do I change the home launcher? I don't see any setting for it in the settings menu. I can open up Themer (which I downloaded) and it will open up but as soon as I go to any other app, it will go back to the original homescreen.
Why is there no app drawer?
Why is the phone asking me to accept terms (which says **** like honor the Chinese constitution) and connect to the internet just to view photos in my album? I can't think of any reason that a photo album would need to connect to the internet unless it's going to upload my photos somewhere which I obviously don't want. So I seemingly cannot even view photos on this phone unless I can download something else to take care of it.
I looked at the rooting section for this phone and it seems that all of them currently have issues. Is there no way to just get plain ole vanilla android on this phone? I have never rooted a phone before and the thought is a bit scary to me because it seems like most of the instructions are written for people who already know how to do that type of thing. I went to the Cyanogenmod website and they didn't have one for this phone. Are there no alternatives? I will gladly pay for something like this. I don't want all this Mi stuff on my phone.
Sorry if I sound... whatever, I am just a bit flustered with all of this. The hardware seems nice but the software is utter ****. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where did you purchase this Phone? From Chinese website? Does it have Google Playstore? If yes then
1) If you just want to change the Home Launcher then install your desired Launcher from Playstore and goto settings-> Installed Apps-> Defaults and set the Downloaded Launcher from there.
2) The Default Launcher on the phone is MIUI Launcher which doesn't have app drawer like iPhone and some other chinese UI.
3) There is unofficial CyanogenMod and some other custom ROMs but there are some problems with each of them like Video recording not working, if working then Audio not being recorded in them. 3G network issues and so on. The process of flashing a custom rom or rooting is little bit tedious and I'd not suggest you in this stage.
Better is to download a desired launcher from Playstore (if you have it) else sideloading and hiding the apps which you don't want to see.
Also note on official Miui ROM you're able to uninstall a bunch of stock apps too.
I'd recommend read up to unlock boot loader. It's a minor project getting this device where you want it, but the awesome battery life and screen size makes your effort worth the time.
Pls also visit official Miui forums there's a wealth of info there. ? ?

OMG, thank you so much for the home launcher tip. That solved the biggest issue I had. My Xperia Z2 had a home launcher setting in the main settings menu. I never would have guessed to look there. Thank you so much. I switched all the default apps to what I wanted and this is already a million times better. And yes, I bought it from a reputable retailer here in Bangkok so I think it's legit. Had Play store on it and everything.

Thanks, I will look into it. Cheers.
I've had the same feeling since my first Mi phone, the Redmi Note 3G. They make some really great & quality hardware capable of very good performances & end up great value for money if you know your way around. But like you felt MIUI is complete horse arse' output these days. It used to be great around version 4 or even upto 5 but then its been downhill since. My suggestion is unlock, install twrp, then you have 2 options
If you
1. want VoLTE then install sMIUI 8.0.1.0 from xiaomi.eu
2. can get by without VoLTE(either not using it at all or by using it through a MiFi modem which some carriers provide in many places/countries now) then install RR5.7.3(thanks to people like @ajsmsg78) which I found to be the most stable with the least issues so far for everyday use. Please thank the devs.
Not that the other like CM13, Mokee, etc are bad but there are issues here & there which prevent me from using it as a daily driver. I'd suggest you take a nandroid backup of all these when you try them each.
If you need more help, drop me a PM. I can help anytime with an hours notice AFAIK.
CAUTION: Read the unlocking & custom ROM/recovery guides 10-20 times so that you've almost memorised every detail if you are a newbie otherwise, especially for phones which have a non-removable battery, you'll end up regretting something later & end up kicking yourself. DO NOT SKIMP ON READING IT AGAIN & AGAIN OR SKIP STEPS else YOU"LL PAY FOR IT LATER.
To unlock the bootloader, you must ask permission from xiaomi. This takes a few days to process. You can read how to do this on en.miui.com forum. Once you have unlocked the bootloader, things will be much easier.
If the "reputable" dealer in Bangkok is Lazada, then you have probably got a patched ROM from China. You can check this by version number.

chill bro here is the link : en(dot)miui.com/thread-327459-1-(dot)html
replace (dot) with the symbol(.)
a word of advice stemming frm my experience, when u enter the phone number in application be sure to enter the same number which ur going to use in the device, and even after recieving the approval sms u might have to give it a few tries before it actually unlocks,(i had to wait 3 days for the approval sms, after recieving the sms tried for 3 days until it actually unlocked, ur mileage may vary)all the best, hope u get unlocked soon
I Googled "xiaomi mi max Unlock bootloader" and got this within 10 seconds :-
http://en.miui.com/thread-202290-1-1.html
Take care that you are logged into xiaomi account and the phone number as mentioned above, if you use phone number as your user name.
That's the only possible error. My permission from xiaomi took only 4 days. Once you unlock the bootloader, things are very easy. Remember to unpack all the zip files!
It took me 2 weeks to get an unlock code the Redmi Note 3 which uses similar internals to the Mi Max. Once I got unlock permission, I had no problems unlocking the phone using the MiFlash Unlock program in Windows. I've unlocked it a few times when I was switching back and forth between MIUI and CM.
And you're right, MIUI is a donkey's behind when it comes to slowing the phone down and doing weird things in the background. I'd recommend rooting the phone, running OS Monitor to check outbound traffic and installing Afwall to stop MIUI from phoning home. I replaced most of the stock system apps with open source equivalents and I allowed Internet access for only a few apps. Bad enough that Google slurps your data, it's even worse to have eyes in China tracking your every online move too.

Is it time to move on from Robin?

It's time to move on, a bad news for all Rebels.
Nextbit Robin's cloud services are nomore. Means there is nothing except 32 gb onboard we're left with as there is no sdcard slot, no otg support and from now, no smart storage too. I don't know what to do with Robin now.
It seems like Robin has been dropped by all officially supported Roms. Even the 2012's Nexus 4 has got 8.1 Oreo and salt-on-wound (XDA reviews it). I think i should move on now if there will not be any Oreo Rom this Month.
How many Rebels still want Robin Alive?
I can't answer all your questions but here is answer to one of it.

If you were reliant on cloud storage or that was what you wanted all along then you are in luck. Soon after Robin was released almost the whole industry enabled auto sync in their apps.
Google Photos, OneDrive, etc are the few popular to name. You have options, you just need to choose one you like and use it. You'll never miss the missing cloud part.
Actually there is crdroid android 8.1 for robin but it still getting worked on. firebird11 seems hard at work trying to make it stable so just have patience Android O will come.
@Mr bubbles
Talking about Android O. Omni and Lineage are also being worked on. Their threads are update with devs updating the status.
@/root
Yes ik but i said crdroid cause u can download it rn. Look in crdroid replies. The only problem rn is it is not stable for daily use it seem but it also seems close to stable. Just so you know idk if u can download the others rn if so plz send me a link or where to download i would love to check them out.
You can also download Oreo builds of LineageOS right now in the LineageOS thread. I'd say that they're gonna be working much better than the crDroid builds since crDroid's just using LOS's kernel + trees, and javelinanddart pushes out new builds more frequently whenever he fixes something whereas crDroid's latest build is from March 6th and still has the broken sensors + H264 encoder.
backup to google services works well. I just hope the battery doesnt die.
I thought OTG was not possible with the Robin i.e. it lacks the hardware for it. Is my information wrong? Do you really have it working?
@witnit I too remember the same thing @Nextbit_Khang had said. It is a hardware requirement that wasn't there in Robin.
Nvm
Awesome!
1) Out of curiosity, what model and brand of OTG cable do you have?
2) Is crdroid the only ROM you've had success with, or were there others?
My memory failed me, sorry. It was my wifes last phone, not the robin that I had her using USB OTG with. I have a bunch of phones that I tinker with, my bad.
Sucks that USB OTG doesn't work though, I would have thought of that more as a software than hardware limitation. I dont even have a C OTG cable

Alfawise Tab 7.9 inch, an iPad clone with great performances but....

Hi all,
I've noticed the Alfawise Tab tablet on Gearbest Mod Edit: Selling site link removed.
As reviewed by some, this tablet seems great at a very low cost. It has the screen, the sounds, the battery, the form factor etc...
Mod Edit: Video link removed for promoting selling site.
Sadly, searching for at least a "support" or "download firmware" doesn't return any results.
It only has Android 6 with security patches from March 2016.
I'm a bit concerned about security, but not that much, since I only use my current tablet for reading and browsing (so... a pdf reader and Chrome is enough).
I've seen in some other review that an anti-malware check returned nothing (minute 5m 24s, in the view below). So, this tablet may be clean, just the software outdated.
Mod Edit: Video link removed for promoting commercial selling.
So, I'm just interested in BUGS right now, if any. The iFive tablet seems to also have an outdated Android 6 version and it has some pretty annoying issues mentioned HERE, on XDA forums
If you have this tablet, please tell me: what bugs did you find? Force crashes of apps, deadlocks, SoD, etc... ?
Kind regards
I have the tablet since last week now...
i have to say I have several Android tablet Teclast x98Air, x98Air2, Cube i7, iFive 4S... I have rooted all my tablet, some by mounting a factory system partition on my computer and manually adding su binaries. I switched also to iPad mini 4 for 1 year and half or so... In short, I know what kind of issue you can meet and what is a good tablet according to chinese standard and can compare with other kind of devices...
The Alfawise Tab is an amazing piece of hardware AND software for the bucks :
Hardware :
- Good Audio
- Slim. Not as much as an iPad mini but slimmer then iFive 4s (which is a ****ing piece of crap).
- Great screen : it's 1536 x 2048. Clear, bright... You get it.
- USB-C charge.
- Storage seems fast enough.
- Decent battery life.
- It's metal. Not ****ty plastic like iFive.
- Good build according to chinese standard. Not as good as Xiaomi but still pretty good. Better than Teclast.
Software :
- No bloatware, crapware, ****ware of any kind... It's stock Android. Period.
- Fully loaded with google suite : Appstore and the whole google ecosystem (map, book, film, chatting stuffs, music, assistant, youtube).
- NO SoD, NO crash, no infamous shutdown... Nothing. The thing is as stable and smooth as swiss clock.
- It's fast. NO lags. (But i idn't test any game. And I'm more like puzzle game than car or fight).
Only downside : I couldn't find any factory rom on the web, neither boot image. There is no "su" binary in the system partition (???), the rom is a production one and adb root is disabled so there is no way to make a dump of boot and system partition as a backup or material to root or custom rom (as far as I know). Couldn't find a way to contact Alfawise. There is no contact form or any information on that matter on their website to ask them to release the factory rom for public consumption.
Great reply, @w1nst0n sm1th, and I totally agree with you about the downsides!

First of all, thank you very much for replying with such useful information. I too noticed the PROs of this and I'm glad you confirmed them.
As for the downsides, yes!, those quoted concern me the most. No support, no contact, no "download firmware" section.
However, this is not really that bad, given that other popular brands in China will make you almost flash a new ROM when they release an update (no OTA or not working).
For example, the iFive is backed by a s***ty website with updates and support. Each update is tagged with a hardware version. In their case, you have to update the right tablet with the corresponding ROM, otherwise you are probably screwed. (please correct me if I'm wrong regarding the updating process in the case of iFive)
I prefer a stable OS with no updates and no support page :good: rather than an unstable OS , with updates that patch the issues reported on an official support page.
Thank you again for your opinion.
I hope others will join this thread with hands-on experiences.

It's definitelly a good upgrade. Quality is clearly above iFive 4s, as well for hardware than software.

I don't really measure it. But since i had the occasion to compare with iFive 4s I bought 2 months earlier, it seemed to me the battery life lasted longer, as long as you don't leave the tablet in a state of heavy duty without putting it in deep sleep (screen switched off), like screen on with a game started on the foreground or background.
Once on heavy duty, the battery will soon decrease rapidly, but that's the case with every tablet.
Does it support Full HD Netflix?
Hi all,
Does this tablet support viewing Netflix in Full HD?
I know many of the chinese tablets do not support this due to moded or non-certified OS...

Stupid me .... I needed the pull down menu .... and choose file transfer instead of usb charging ......omg , stupid me.
Its working now.
firmware
The tablet is a rebranded JDtab 01. In order to find firmware for this one google "needrom jdtab" (i can't post a link), but it needs a premium account, i also found it and downloaded from another site, google "panuso.com52949643", i uploaded it to my google drive (i can email the link to anyone that need it). I think it's possible to use the scatter file from the JDtab's rom to take a backup for the rom and create CWM recovery, in order to root, or even flash the entire rom to the tablet (there is a post at androidiani.com, you can google "androidiani. alfawise tab root" in order to find it. Also you can google "rom development for Mediatek MT8173 & MT8176 " , maybe you find something useful.
Bugs?
Has anyone managed to root the device , take a backup or flash Jdtab's rom? I have a problem with many apps that want to draw over other and I can't give them the permission to do it. Also there isn't a reboot selection (strange for Android 6). Another major problem is that there isn't Wi-Fi hot-spot setting and there isn't any way to activate it, (unable to use shareit or midrop). Lastly, when you power off the device and boot it again, it takes a very long time to boot.
ROOT for JDTAB
Here is a tutorial that i found, explaining hot to root JDTAB: Google "baidu5615963852"
Maybe appliable to our tablet by only flashing boot.img (if the boot.img is compatible with ours).
I also found that MTK8173 can be generally rooted with magidisk, but we can only use JDTAB'S boot.img.
So if someone is risky enough, can give it a try.
I made flashable rom zip for custom recovery (TWRp etc) using JDTAB'S stock rom for spflashtools with android kitchen. I HAVEN'T TESTED IT

There is a MT8173 TWRP for porting, maybe someone can make a working TWRP. I used Alfawise's stock recovery and tried 3 differend methods, none worked.

Alfawise tab firmware
Good news!
I managed to get the official firmware and tool from Gearbest.
So if anyone ends bricking his device, can hopefully restore it with this firmware.
I will also try to port TWRP with this stock recovery.img
Here is the alfawise image&tool download address in baidu cloud:

PassWord:fz8b
I will also upload it to Google Drive tomorrow.
For now, here is Alfawise's stock recovery.img and scatter: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ppChA43MamPdVtli6JKnc9Hp33zHWMid

That also seems like a guide that may be appliable to our tablet: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/root-teclast-master-t8-t3722210
i bought the tab from gearbest. the tab switches on rarely. currently the tab wont switch on and don't know if it'll ever switch on. from day 1 i'm facing this issue. Don't know if it's the battery/ power / display issue. the charging indicator light is displayed when connected to battery. pressing the power + volume down button continuously for more than a minute is also not helping. tried charging the battery one whole night. still no luck. Any help is appreciated

First try to hold the power button pressed over 15 seconds . If that doesn't help, try to reflash the official firmware.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, reflashing the official firmware too didn't help resolve the issue.

In this case you should open a Ticket to Gearbest (do not mention that you reflashed the firmware).
