[Q] USB hub and external storage - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone tried using External storage over a USB hub with Stickmount? I have an unpowered hub and a portable external HDD. I figure this isn't working because of lack of power. I would like to know if anyone has used a combination of unpowered hub/powered drive or powered hub/ unpowered drive, with any level of success.

Strange USB experience
Same thing here.
With the unpowered hub it does not see my 500gb drive.
I've been trying to figure it out.
Some say Stickmount would not auto-mount for them, yet my 32gb flash drive(fat32) auto-mounts at boot and displays a message
reported from Stickmount indicating the successful mount.
I just now unintalled Stickmount and re-booted and it still auto-mounts - but no message now.
I had tried several usb mount apps before and one of them must have stuck. Can't fine it with Titanium. Not sure what it was.
Can anyone tell me how to track it down? It might be useful. Maybe rooting changed something. IDK

I also tried this one without the hub.

It would display two 500gb drives but I could not click the mount button without my mouse and the auto-mount option didn't seem to work.

It's probably the hub/drive combo. I have a unpowered hub that the FTV can see my wireless mouse but not my Toshiba 1TB. But I have powered hub that I can connect and see the Toshiba drive.

I don't think any unpowered usb hub will be able to spin a harddrive at 5900RPM or 7200RPM. Molex or Sata power connectors deliver 12V and USB only delivers 5V. It may work if you have an external SSD, but I'm not so sure.
My unpowered usb hub powers my 32GB Flash Drive, Flirc, Bluetooth dongle for Keyboard and a USB Mouse.

I was able to mount a 1TB, externally powered HDD and navigate the folders.
Tried to play videos in XBMC. There was sound but no picture on every file I tried.

OTG through a HUB

Hey! So i managed my S2 to work with an OTG adapter. Now it recognizes Flash drives, USB mouse and keyboard as well. My problem is though, that i'd want to use both the mouse and the keyboard simultaneously, and later on my tablet as well.
I've got a USB hub which was pretty cheap i guess,
ht tp://itmedia.sk/item-images/other-usb_omega_hub4portSTARpowercapable/it6818_2.jpeg?nc=032
When i connect it to the OTG adapter it lights up, and if there's a flash drive attached to it when i plug it in, the phone recognizes the flashdrive without problem. As soon as i plug in a second flash drive, the light goes off from the HUB and both of the sticks get unrecognized. Also, the mouse nor the keyboard works through the HUB somehow..
I need to buy a specific hub with OTG support or a power hub perhaps? Could anyone help in this? I looked over google and stuff but people seemed to say different stuff at almost every site.. Thanks!!

Oh well that's quite interesting. Then you're saying this piece of video could be fake perhaps?
Since i can post links yet, search for this on youtube: USB HUB Support On GALAXY S2
Check the very first video.
I'm convinced that the every phone can handle only one device connected at the same time.

Well, it surely doesn't seem that way, that's why i was asking, since it's possible.
Weird.... i got sgs2 and 4-port usb hub and when i connect 2 pendrives to hub and hub to phone everything works good (i see UsbDriveA and UsbDriveB). If your hub have dc input you can try connecting power supply to this hub. Maybe this hub isn't compatibile with your phone.

USB OTG + USB HUB to connect A Mouse and Keyboard same time

Greetings Guys, I bought an USB OTG Cable, which works great on mouse, keyboard and pen drive.
My only ambition is to get it working with a Mouse and Keyboard at the same time, so I can use my mobile as a portable netbook like for work while im outside of home.
I have at the moment an USB OTG Cable, and a low power mini mouse and portable keyboard also an USB Hub with two ports, which can use external power source.
The thing is my note can see each alone, cant see the HUB and the devices connected, even with the external power connected to the hub, what I can do to solve this? thanks
Install USB OTG helper app (needs root), you can try to get some debug info from there.
Check this: www_leicke_eu/en/products/DS40538. I found it while looking for a usb hub that will permit me to charge my note 10.1 when using otg cable with mouse. Just replace _ with dots.

what capacity btw?
When you connect a pendrive, usually either of 2 things happen:
1.) shows that external storage is connected, details can be seen in settings>storage, external storage. file access needs to be done using a file manager app.
2.) shows, device power consumption error. meaning, ur pendrive consumes lot of power than the phone can provide. solution to this is to use a new pendrive or thru a externally powered usb hub.
Its of 8GB. The phone doesnt show any sign of connected pen drive and even the external storage option in "storage" is greyed out
thanks

else it shud be a problem with the cable.

You can use "StickMount" app to mount USB storage , incase your phone is not detecting the USB device. The only issues is that the app needs a rooted device. so if your mobile is rooted then you are good to go.
StickMount isnt helping either
try connecting a usb mouse and/or keyboard..
if it works, try a different pendrive, else then maybe u can blame the OTG cable or ur phone...
I made my own OTG cable using an old regular micro cable that I no longer needed. I believe you need to "jump" pin four to pin five....but you would be best researching it. I recall it being extremely easy to do, but then again I do have years of experience ripping stuff apart and putting it back together.

Also, I don't think drive size is an issue as I've connected a 2TB full size external hard-drive (the kind with a power brick) and was able to use it just fine. It was NTFS formatted so I did have to use USB OTG Helper to get it working, but it did work with no problems.

Second USB device

I tried connecting a USB keyboard using an USB OTG cable, but I didn't get it to work. The other USB port is in use by my external harddrive.
Is there a possibility to make the keyboard work?
Can immagine more people want to add a second USB device to their OUYA...

You'll need to buy a USB HUB (Get a powered one to future proof all your USB needs, you can get a USB 2.0 Hub pretty cheap). This will allow you to hook up at least 3 USB's to the OUYA. The Micro USB won't work for things such as hard drives or HID devices.
In the future, please use the search function before posting as this has been talked about in many other posts.

I have a 4-port hub and it works fine connecting 1 storage and 3 other usb devices
I had this issue where only one harddrive could be used and If you have a harddrive with 2 partitions ouya wont mount it. Luckily I found an app called usbotghelper which does all the above I mentioned plus read and write and ext3 support. I wish it would get submitted to the ouya store so I could use the paid version that will mount on startup.

[Q] Does the Fire TV support USB storage/powered USB splitters?

Just a quick question for anyone who already received their Fire TV (Mine will be here Wednesday hopefully)
I see that people have had success in getting everything from mice/keyboards/etc working with their Fire TV, but I'm curious if powered USB hubs and external USB drives work as well.
Ultimately I'd like to have something along the lines of a USB keyboard/mouse as well as an XB360 controller, as well as a USB slot that I can throw some media on if I have a friend over who doesn't want to set up their machine/share on my network and we can still watch something through either XBMC or Plex.

Ordered an Ouya that hasn't arrived yet and considering return/refuse.
Does anyone have any information for the future of FTV USB storage?
ie:
Is it not possible with the current hardware?
Is it a feature that is under development and will likely be enabled in the near future?

Most likely not a hardware issue, but the software distributed with the device by Amazon does not support it. I think they want you to use their cloud services instead.
Most likely fixable once Root is available, but currently there is no distributed Root available yet. Most likely will see Root available after the device gets 4.43 updates.
Thanks, the hdd is a must have for Mashup's direct download, instead of using a dvr.
Since I got the Ouya on the cheap, will probably keep it for now.
I see the xbmc wiki says usb storage can be enabled with root.

So, just to confirm, you are using a USB Hub to get all three USB items? Keyboard/mouse, controller AND external storage?
need to get that last part clear..
Nope. Didn't try that. Just the 2.5" usb 500gb external.

I have a simple 4 port unpowered USB 2.0 hub connected to my Fire TV at all times. In that hub is a 64GB NTFS thumb drive at all times that is mounted via StickMount on boot. When I need to, I plug a USB mouse and keyboard into two of the 3 open USB ports on the hub. Everything works with all 3 devices plugged into the hub. I hope that's the info you're looking for.

I don't know if that's disk related, but I have an old LaCia external 2.5" 500Gb HDD. It has a regular USB2 port and an additional 5V in which can be used optionally (if attached to the computer, it works with just the USB).
With the AFTV, I had to use the additional 5V.
A friend of mine is having the same issue with his external HDD, the power from AFTV is not enough
Hi,
I read that Fire TV doesn't support USB storage, but I believe it does although I've not been able to access a drive (plugged in to powered hub) yet. So far using sideloaded es file explorer I can see the USB device and alongside it the drop down button which when clicked seems to unmount the drive. Looking in the dmesg log (familiar to Linux users I'm sure) the kernel loads appropriate USB driver module and the recognises the USB storage the device as /dev/sda with partition sda1. There is also an entry in the list of mount points for /storage/usb, but it seems to point to 'tmp, tmp' which doesn't make much sense to me. It seems to me the only thing missing is automount of the recognised partition, does anyone agree or disagree? Does anyone know a way of mounting on an uprooted device (l'm on the latest update and would prefer not rooting unless unavoidable).
I've been using this one without issue: http://goo.gl/yXFV9o
