[GUIDE] Install Windows 8 to a Tablet/Slate from USB

A lot of people have asked me in the past, how can I use my Samsung Series 7 Slate to run the latest Windows 8 (originally Dev Preview when I first released this) and actually I have been seeing it more often that people can't figure out how to get it on their Slate...
With that being said, I recommend you visit my updated post on my Blog that reflects Windows 8 RC here install & my blog contains other Windows 8 (and WP7) related content if you're bored. Otherwise to save you time, below is the steps/full blog post and a video created (This is my video from my YouTube Channel "TechMeShow", I permit the video being here) regarding making the USB Stick, which is old news but still people continue to ask and really get hundreds of views due to Google Searches.

Download 64-Bit US-EN Windows 8 Release Preview Here (ISO)

Download 32-Bit US-EN Windows 8 Release Preview Here (ISO)
HOWTO Install Windows 8 Release Preview on MOST Tablet/Slate's
1). Download the edition of Windows 8 you want.
Tip: Download ISO from above.
2). Grab the Microsoft USB Disc Creator ('Should' use a USB Stick + Available USB Slot)
Tip Link: Microsoft USB Disc Creator Download Page. Video below.
3). After you use the Disc Creator, pop in the USB Stick to your computer and DO NOT RUN INSTALL ON WINDOWS 7 (We want it on a Tablet/Slate, remember?).
4). Now, reboot the tablet/slate, hit the Home Screen button only 1 time (give it a moment, don't rush, it'll happen) and select the USB Stick
Tip: To navigate up and down, select the left (or varies on device) Up/Down Volume Control and once selected, press the "Screen Lock".
5). Product Key: TK8TP-9JN6P-7X7WW-RFFTV-B7QPF
6). Follow the steps for installation and your set!

If you already knew all of this, terrific. However, again and not to brag, when I get at least 200 daily visits because people can't figure out how to install Windows 8 <edition here> on a Tablet/Slate (yes pretty easy), I thought why not post it here because obviously not enough people are getting it.

Tried the "RC" version before seeing these threads, but I still get the random crash (happens really whenever) that I had in the previous builds.

will this work if i plan to install in my moto xoom

To be 100% honest, I am not sure about the setup part but for the USB Disc, should be the same and just make sure you boot from USB.

Just seems to be a strange hang that (after checking various forums) seems to happen mainly on Asus laptops,
apparently concerning the NVIDIA graphics driver which needs to be updated. For the moment they've only got
a W8 driver for the Release Preview build which doesn't seem to solve the issue.

Very weird, have you tried to load the driver during setup?

I don't know wether this is a noobish question ..but can we install windows 8 on an android device ? Like on an OneX to be particular ...hmm ..ok sorry got it ...we need the right drivers which will be pretty damn hard to find .. thanks anyways

Actually, a good chance windows can just use some generic drivers. Once in Windows, I am sure a windows update could find something, windows 8 is badass at finding stuff.

There is no Usb port in moto Xoom.

Does it have a MicroSD?

I'm interested to get it working on my Xoom, too. Yes it has an microSD slot. There are also OTG cables that you can mount USB sticks.

Guys, the Windows 8 architecture for the images (and RTM that is out now) is for x86 processors only at this time. The Android devices are ARM based. Won't work.
Windows RT is going to support the ARM architecture, but will be a while (maybe never) before the ability to load it on Android hardware will happen.

If Arm is currently what the devices are using, you'll need to obtain the current MSDN/RTM edition... Otherwise, if you have USB/MicroSD capabilities, you can install Windows to it and normally windows will find generic drivers but if you can get a windows display, that in itself is good news.

figured I'd bump this thread as I have a slate 7 and I'm trying to get the thing to recognize my usb disk drive. Currently I'm having no luck.
I've tried plugging the usb drive directly into the slate as well as into a powered usb hub and nothing seems to make the device see the usb drive.
The hub is good because the usb keyboard I'm using allows me to navigate the bios with the keys and what not but when I go to the boot menu, where it says usb cd drive it just says ":None" and only lists the internal hdd.
this has worked just fine with several other types of tablets but this samsung is the first to simply not recognize the drive at all. Bios settings are all factory default BTW.
Any ideas?

First I recommend you remove the stick from any device and only plugged straight in the stick.
Also, did you create the USB Stick with the Microsoft USB Stick Creator? If not, try it and also let me know what you used previously.

Killed my Asus Vivo Tab RT. Any hope?

Ok I have a backup of 8.0 on a usb flash drive before I upgraded to 8.1 which I loved. I am very tech savvy and have flashed lots of roms, comfortable with Reg edits and hacks. I think I went too far now...
I remember a boot speed boost tweak I read on the internet which I thought I would try on my vivo tab. I ran msconfig and went to the boot menu. I checked No GUI boot and then went to advanced options and selected in number of processors - 4 (as it's a tegra quad core) and maximum memory as 2gig, I applied, got a warning message about bitlocker which was fine as I have recovery key and rebooted.
However.... upon starting I get Preparing Automatic Repair message, then Diagnosing PC message, then Your PC did not start correctly. So I click on Advanced options and have tried every option possibly listed. I used the Windows 8 recovery image in my usb drive to refresh, repair, reset, and nothing works. Says install media and I do and says not correct media. Unless it is expecting 8.1 backup which I don't have. I thought anyone could revert to 8.0 anyway.
So matter what I try I cannot get it to start. If only I could undo those boot changes. Maybe via command prompt?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes. Boot to command prompt mode, then extract the WinRT 8.0 WIM file from USB over the drive C:\ with the "dism /apply-image /imagefile:e:\...\your_recovery.wim /index:1 /applydir:c:\"
I'd recommend to format c: before doing this. Obviously you'll lose all your data.
You may also need to edit boot options with bcdedit.

If you have the 8.0 recovery image, you'll need to actually boot from the USB stick directly. I think that this is due to the invalidation of 8.0 signatures that happened in 8.1. I only know how you do this with Surface RT: with the USB stick connected and the Surface off, hold volume down, then press and hold the power button until you see the Surface logo. It'll then take noticeably longer to boot, since it's reading off USB instead of the built-in SSD.
I don't know how different this procedure would be on an Asus Vivo Tab.

Ok I solved it by downloading a different recovery image to the one I had. Managed to install and boot by volume down button. Strange because my recovery image worked before. All running fine ?
However I then ran into another problem. All of a sudden after a reset I got an error saying "unable to reset your pc. A required hard drive partition is missing". What the heck I did nothing. Also when I tried to use bitlocker recovery key it said the hard drive is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
So after some hours of research, I booted to command prompt and typed:
bcdboot
and then...
bcdboot c:\windows
and it said boot files copied successfully. I rebooted with fingers crossed and it WORKED!!!

This may be due to you've reformatted your USB stick to NTFS, then copied there your recovery image, since UEFI can boot only from FAT32 disks.

Glad to see the joys of Windows troubleshooting isn't lost on their tablets.
I'm really considering moving from Android based tablets to Windows 8 tablets once the platform matures a little bit. They run so smoothly (tried a few out at my local Staples). The OS is basically built for touchscreen anyway.

Stuck on USB icon Screen

Hi!
I need help with my phone - Asus Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML).
I'm stuck at a USB icon screen. No more Recovery Menu and no more bootloader.
I tried installing the Intel Soc USB Driver but my Windows 8 64bit Enterprise laptop won't install it.
BTW, my phone reboots on it's own. Doesn't matter if it's hooked to the charger or laptop. It reboots everytime.
Is there any hope left on this phone?
Under Device Manager, all I see is the Moorefield and no matter how I try installing drivers it won't.
Please help.

Try diferent pc and flash fastboot.img and recovery.img should be fine.

Yup! this was link but I got stuck on installing the Intel Soc USB driver. I got Windows 8 and no luck at all.
What else can be done?

can you enter bootloader screen ? if you can flash the 3 files from the guide above and that should fix it...
if you were trying to restore phone then continue with that guide , providing you can enter recovery and adb sideload the rom to fix the phone
guide is for ZE550ML/ZE551ML

Perhaps you should try booting windows with disabled driver signature check. Ask Google on how to do that.
On my win8 64 the drivers installed without doing that, but I've read that driver signature check can be a problem when installing Intel soc drivers.
You should give it a try...

unlock bootloader ASUS RT TF600T

Hey all,
Just wondering if its possible to unlock the bootloader for the tablet ASUS RT TF600T I am trying to install linux. I have created a bootable usb but the tablet is ignoring my usb as the bootloader is locked.

Be sure that your usb drive is formatted as FAT32 with UEFI support.

Just use Rufus to prepare usb, tick UEFI partition opion, then copy files.

Interesting ok thanks ill look into it. I assumed it wouldn't work as I thought it was locked to itself if that makes sense?

Boot from usb should works. On mine tf600tl works fine

With the UEFI parition yes? You didnt get any BSOD errors?
Im gonna make one in the morning and report back, are you being serious right now you have a working asus tablet and you have installed a different OS on it with UEFI.
What OS are you running on your tablet? Will windows 7 support UEFI partition as well? Also what about android?

Never heard about win7 on arm platform, there're win8 and embedded ported to arm cpus.
You've asked for booting usb with unlock files - there's no problem.

Ah ok I will try it and test the theory see how I go, if not ill either try an install linux or windows 8.
Just to get some OS on there I will be happy. Might even try and load android on there.
I cant believe something so simple can make it work. Ive looked online and read about Rufus I will test it out and report back.

Hey mate, tried to make a bootable USB with with windows 10 32 and 64bit ISO which came up with an error when I selected the settings to create a UEFI partition. It reverted the settings back and said "Error ISO Image Extraction Failure." Ive taken screenshots below so you can see whats going on.
I have googled the errors and they are suggesting either the USB is corrupt or the ISO is corrupt. But I can install windows from USB and DVD perfectly fine... this is weird. Ive found a youtube video online which shows you how to create a UEFI partition manually, rather than using a third party program.

Omg just format usb with Rufus, don't use ISO.

Ok so once Ive formatted the USB with the UEFI partition how do I get Put the ISO on the USB if im not using rufus to do it?
Are you talking about copying the asus recovery files? Because im wanting to install a different OS onto the tablet, with a UEFI partition.

I didnt have to create a UEFI partition to use the recovery files. So ive wasted time creating one through RUFUS. I told you that I got a BSOD when trying to reset PC option...

Mate.. In the first post you've asked how to unlock bootloader, so you got answer how to make bootable usb drive for unlock files. At this moment it's impossible to run something else than Windows rt on tf600 series.

Duel boot with Windows rebooting options

Hay all, not sure if I'm in the right place if I'm not just direct me there and I'll remove this thread. I have a duel boot uefi intel NUC system with Windows 10 and bliss x86 and I regualy swap between OS's, I'm wondering does anyone know of a app or simple way I can 1 click reboot from bliss to Windows with out having to click reboot and selecting windows from grub manually and vice-versa (windows to bliss)?? Cheers in advance.
