so the new kitkat update came out for the t217s. I would like to know if sometime has a flashable version of the rom and modem that won't reset my data.

Just root and back up apps with titanium
I don't really care about the apps I'm mostly concerned with losing root

a flash-able version i dont think so, only through odin. you can download it from sammobile. as for losing root, you can just re-root your tab the same way as before.

Mobile Odin has just been updated to support i317 and also had some nice bug fixes. I've never used it but I'm sure its a good thing to have.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro.
Check it out for those who don't know about it. It won't increase the flash counter and it will root for you while flashing your recovery.tar. this is good if your a noob!
Nice. Thanks for posting. Seems like a useful app to have for flashing.

Do you need to root to use mobile odon and can you do full Rom backups (or is CWM the only way)?

Hi, guys. I wanted to write a post, but since i'm a new member, i'm writing a thread here instead. The thread i wanted to reply is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
I wanted to let somebody know (because it helps some folks) that i used CF-auto-root, and i have successfully rooted my phone.
More details that may be helpful or useful are following:
*Everything was fine until 4.2.2 (JB); then, my stupidity kicked in, and MANUALLY upgraded OTA to 4.3;
*I noticed this CF-auto-root, tried it, perfectly rooted my phone. And YES, i tripped the Knox warranty...
*At some point, i unrooted my 4.3 (JB) so that i can manually upgrade to KitKat when it's released;
*Successfully upgraded to 4.4.2 (KK) OTA on Mar 10;
*I couldn't find any info about "safe root" for 4.4.2, so i chose CF-auto-root instead (i tripped the flag, so i didn't care);
*I took the same steps for rooting 4.3 and it "worked". Initially verified with Root Checker Basic;
*However, SuperSU seemed to be "missing", and i DL from the store, and it opened fine (I didn't know SuperSU can be DL from the store)
This is my story, and i'm sticking to it
cf auto root work fine on my m919 4.4.2
It doesn't show up anymore in the app drawer. I don't have supersu in my app drawer, either. And, I'm definitely rooted. Sounds like you are, too.

Made an account just to reply to this. I was in the same boat, and tried that. Phone rebooted but couldn't take OTA. When it restarted after failed OTA install, went into bootloop. Had to reflash stock through ODIN and problem solved. Sorry man.
So Im running stock recovery and stock rooted 4.4. So that means I either wait for lollipop on Kies or Odin back to stock then take the OTA.

I'm in the same boat
Not sure about this but Odin to stock and taking update will keep all your data if that is what you are worried about. Only issue is you might not be as smooth keeping your settings. I had some fc's and lag. So I reset to factory and restored apps and there was a huge speed and smoothness increase.
Im planning on reseting, trying to maintain setup on a major update always causes lag.

I'm talking if I just root it, and leave as is. No custom roms, kernels, or anything like that. Would I still be able to update to the official Lollipop through my phone in settings > about device > software update???

I thought you could? It would just get rid of the root. I'm pretty sure that's what I did with the update before the last

I'm rooted and I can get updates, just tried it out since I'm not on 4.4.4

And another question. Will adaway work with 4.4.4? I remember when I rooted my note 2, it had 4.4.3 or something like that, and adaway didn't work. Looked up why, and people were saying because of jellybean.
Pretty much the only reason why I wanna root again is for ad blocking, cpu sleeper, and get rid of a bunch of bloatware.

not through the settings but you could just download the firmware package from samfirmware.com and then flash it with Odin. It will give you the full update just as the method you mentioned in your post

It depends on what you change after rooting but generally the answer is no OTA updates will not work. That does not mean you can no longer update. I followed a guide in the general forum to root without tripping Knox. Within a day or two an OTA update came out but I was able to upgrade using Flashfire and the full Samsung's firmware file which contained all that the OTA contained. I did this while retaining user data, keeping root (SuperSU) and not tripping Knox. It was rather easy actually, with the most time consuming part being the firmware download. Any changes I made to the /system partition had to be reapplied but that was limited so was not a hassle.

Means no updates directly on tab by samsung?

Correct, at least on my device (SM-T800, rooted, stock 5.0.2, Knox still untripped) the Samsung update in settings detects that I've modified something in /system and refuses to use an OTA. I could not tell if it would even download an OTA file. I used the alternate method I previously described to get all that the OTA contained.
