[Q] Screen Durability - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

My kids both have the original Nexus 7 and are both about to go on their 3rd screen replacement. This is frustrating as only one was caused by a severe drop. At this point, we are considering a tablet upgrade rather than another $50 screen repair. Easily cracked screens seems to be a very common problem on the original Nexus 7. Has screen durability improved on the 2013 Nexus 7, or should I look to another brand?

The screen in other tablets aren't really different if not the same. You should just buy a case and a tempered glass screen protector

The bigger the glass, the easier it breaks. Period.
My 2013 "Deb" got a busted screen after a 2 foot drop despite having the rather thick Poetic GraphGrip installed. Finally got it fixed this week after being down for several months.
I've gone now to flip cover cases. Not sure if it will help, but after the royal pain that was changing out the screen, and also having my N4 busted by a relative I let hold it, I'm convinced the trouble is worth it.

I bought LCD digitizer combo on eBay and replaced it myself, pretty easy. It was my first time ever attempting such a thing and it went perfectly. Plenty of instructional videos on YouTube.
Also I use poetic revolution case for my n7 2013 now too, well worth it.

I had the Poetic GraphGrip on it when it got busted. If it lands on the FRONT of the screen, this type of case does not help. Same story with my N4 also.
So I replaced it with a Poetic Slimline http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimline-Function-Manufacturer-Warranty/dp/B00E5NOXM4/ as I'm pretty certain it was more the actual impact to the glass in both cases I've had broken screens than it was shock to the outside of the device.
I do, of course, miss the durability of my old G2X. That's the ONLY thing I miss about that phone, though. I dropped it on gravel once. Didn't break. But I didn't notice I dropped it, and then proceeded to STAND on it while a friend was silently trying to tell me where my phone was. Got a gouge on the screen but no crack.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus without case or screen protector

Is anyone using their Galaxy Nexus without any cases or screen protectors? I've found with my last couple of phones that even without any cases or screen protectors, just using the phone and putting it in my pocket while not in use, they still don't have any scratches on them after all this time. So I feel like these things are mostly unnecessary for how I use my phones, but this review has me concerned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF5l4J6LUps
Is anyone else using the Galaxy Nexus without a case or screen protector and finding scratches already, on the screen or elsewhere?
I had mine for more than a week now, used it without a screen protector and there is not even a tiniest scratch on the screen. I'm still getting one, just in case.
Still waiting to get mine from Handtec. No screen protector for me, but I did order a cheap tpu case from ebay.

I think cases ruin the phone to be honest (although without one you could ruin the phone I guess if you drop it ).
I never used one for my Hero and that doesn't have any scratches after 2 1/2 years. Not going to get one for my Galaxy Nexus either. I like smartphones in their pure unadulterated form
I went to a Verizon store yesterday and picked up a 3-pack of screen protectors. They're actually pretty good! Kinda funny they sell Nexus accessories, just not the Nexus..lol
I did what I usually do...just apply some lefter invisible shield strips on the sides and back (NO screen...that stuff is horrible for the resolution).
Basically I have a bag of scraps from previous gadgets. I just cut and apply. It's great on the sides because it gives the phone a "grippy" feel so it doesn't fly out of your hands.
I also put a piece on the back to make it even grippier when holding. It's still drying, hence the reason it looks the way is does.

So far no scratches on the screen, right? How long have you had it and where do you usually carry it in?
I am at the moment but I have got a screen protector to put on it - buy a decent one and you don't even notice it's there.

No scratches after 30 hours of ownership. Carry in my....front pocket.
I dont like case nor screen protector either, and I have no problem with my current Nexus S.
But, I hate dust ... The phone will collect a lot of dust inside pocket. Thats why I still use soft neoprene pouch.
I've spent enough on previous cases to buy a Galaxy Nexus... This time, I think I'm gonna fly nude here. I'm always super careful with my bleeding edge electronic gadgets... I know what they're worth, I buy em lol.

I just keep it in a pouch when in my pocket and then use the pouch as a mat to rest in on when i have it out on the desk/table too
Hate the feel of the phone in a case, i like them with nothing on
I always use at least a case and, it has saved me a few times. I don't always use a screen protector.

Just a cheapo one off ebay, its not even for the GNex its for the S2 but fits nicely. I'm waiting for a while untill the have a good selection to choose from and then i'll get a better one.

The phone comes right to the end of the pouch but doesn't stick out. I also too the chrome thing off the string that goes around it and just tied it on a knot.
Nope, i never use protection on my devices....imma nasty bastard
I've always protected my phones with the best case available because i always resell them for upgrading and i like getting top dollar for them, This isn't a iphone thought and i won't get much of a resale for it but i like to keep it mint anyway,
I'll be after the AGF Ballistic case, first choice here or the otterbox defender and a nice screen protector

Over the last weeks I sold my N1 for over $200 US and my NS for over $300. Is that not good? Both were used naked and rooted running CM.

Just ordered a Gnex!

Just ordered a Gnex from wirefly for Verizon.. really excited!
Quick question, how is the glass quality on the phone? I had a screen protector on my original droid but eventually took it off. Used the phone for over 2 years and it doesn't have a single scratch, ding, or nick anywhere on the glass. Safe to say that the glass on my old original droid was strong enough to make the screen protector I bought completely useless.
Aside from that, is there anything with the phone worth mentioning that I should know about that I may have missed? Spent the last few hours reading nearly every recent thread in each of the Gnex forum sections here but didn't go that far back..
The screen is similar/the same as Gorilla Glass. But I still wouldn't trust it without a screen protector. A small grain of sand is enough to give it a nasty mark and regret putting a screen protector on.
CDMA/LTE drains battery? Can't think of much else to say......put a custom ROM/kernel to maximize battery life.
The glass is great!
Its withstood drops scratch free, passed my personal knife scrape test, fallen from my pocket (~6ft drop while climbing fence)....all without a case.

A $5 screen protector goes a long way and gives a great piece of mind.
I cannot believe people actually use their phones naked.
Welcome to the family!
Just ordered an XO skin SP for my gnex and my dad's htc inspire (he just scratched his old SP pretty bad and needs a change). also ordered a moto rapid car charger and two cases for my gnex... got the diztronic matte revision 3 case and cimo gloss clear tpu case. looks like the cimo case has a bumpy texture to it but i was hoping to mod it and put a picture behind there and see if i can manage some kind of "custom" case but we'll see how it turns out. the bumpy texture may distort the picture and it might look terrible though. if so, ill probably use the diztronic case.
by the way, i ordered from wirefly and had them keep my existing unlimited data plan (previously used on my original droid). will i have any issues with my data since i'm moving to 4g? the operator wasn't very helpful in terms of telling me how things work. never used a 4g device
hate screen protectors, using the phone since Nov without one. No a mark on the glass. I use a microfibre sleeve form fitbag though when the phone in my pocket.
I don't think any glass is safe if you put it into a jeans pocket etc. Sand, salt, tony grit. all risky. A sleeve will protect yuo from this in your pocket.

was originally planning on keeping my phone naked (having previously using otter boxes on both my old phone and getting one for my dad and recommending one to my gf) but decided to go ahead and try slim TPU case + SP. I saw a quick youtube video review of the diztronic case with their SP and their SP had really bad smudging/fingerprints which made me try the XO skin. was going to get a zagg invisible shield for my dad but just figured i'd order 2 XO skins and try that out instead.
anyway, any info on the 4g concern from my previous post?

I always wear my smartphones naked, people underestimate the build quality of these things.
Heck, im even in the construction bussiness and my phones get quite a wear and tear, but to this day i havent gotten a single scratch on my displays.
FYI to others.. I feel the Gnex's screen is weaker compared to my Optimus 2X I had before this. I've had the phone 2 weeks (no change in use between phones) and there's 2 medium scratches on the screen already. Bought a zagg screen protector and it seems ok.. I don't think I applied it very well though so might pick up another (brand).
Note: Had the Optimus 2X naked since about Nov - which is currently in better condition than my Gnex.
So I just realized VZW 4g phones need sim cards. My previous phone was an original droid so I don't have one. Since I ordered from wirefly, do they include the sim card or do I have to get it from VZW? What is the process like to get one?
I suppose this also ties into my previous question which wasn't answered.. I had wirefly keep my original data plan (unlimited). Will that transfer okay and work with vzw 4g lte? My phone is arriving in a day and a half or so just want to be prepared so i can get up and running asap!
anyone have any info on my last post? heading to bed now gnex will be here soon and want to get started as soon as I open the box!
If you spend as much money as we spend on these devices you should expect them to hold their own. So buying a cover/protection...etc is kinda redundant because maybe you shouldn't have bought the device in the first place.

[Q] Nexus 7 2012 Screen Protector on new Nexus 7?

So, I stay in India, and have ordered an imported Nexus 7, because I couldn't wait till November or December whenever Google/Asus would release the tab here.
Now, the tablet's gonna reach me on 17th.
Since it hasn't been released yet in India, there are no screenguards/screen Protectors/Scratch guards available for it in India.
So, I was thinking, if the screen has remained the same, was it possible to buy a nexus 7 2012 screen protector and apply the same on the new nexus 7 ?
If not, any options? Because, importing would cost me a lot. Screenguard costs like $1 and shipping and handling taxes and all would make it $6 or so, which I certainly won't prefer.
So, any alternatives?
I found a neoprene sleeve which would work fine till they release poetic case in India, whenever tablet gets released.
The new 7 us slimmer and a little taller.
So if you tried to put an old ver 7 screen protector on it would hand over the edges a little.
and there would be about 1/4 inch gap at the top.
not to mention the holes for the light sensor and camera would not match up..
buy a 10" screen protector from another model and use a sharp knife?

Do not worry about it. You can easily get screen protector for your new nexus 7. This won't be official or designed for nexus but would just work fine. I remember my PS VITA needed a screen protector and I just went to a store and he took out a big screen protector. Attached it from one side and then remaining sides he just used a blade to slice them off. It fit so well that no one could ever say that I used a custom protector. So try to go to a shop who is good at screen protectors or you will end up with bubbles and dust particles inside. And he will show you the screen protector to choose from
Right, thanks.
One more question, with Corning Gorilla Glass at place, would I really need it urgently ?
Or is it effective enough to remain scratch free for a week or so?

Defiantly put on a screen protector. I had 2 scratches on my screen on the 2nd day. I purchased a zagg invisible shield for an iPad and cut it to fit my new nexus 7. It looks very nice. I would use a very sharp knife and not scissors.

Hi
I am from India, and i ordered my Nexus 7 over ebay.. got it delivered on 12th.. Even i am searching for a scratch guard.. i think i will go ahead and purchase 10" , cut it and apply. dont want to take any chance with my new baby.
Also if you are looking for any cover /cases, you can check ebay international reseller.. i ordered moko slim case cover for myself.

A nook color SP will cover the entire screen part, but not the bezels.
I had one laying around and it actually fits pretty nice. Temporary solution until my real ones arrive.

Bad luck maybe, I ordered it from amazon UK and i got an old case protector. I think they do not have it unless official here so I guess I will wait it out.
Good news for you is that I tried the old Nexus 7 screen protector. From the width, it is bigger but a bit small in length but its only like 1 cm by which all the screen is covered and most of the bezels. However, be advised that Unless you cut it with a very sharp tool, sometimes the edges you cut get air bubbles in them. So try making as less cuts as possible !
Good luck plus I even cut open my old nexus case and fitted the tablet easily. (MOFRED)

Back Pocket Case - Screen Protection?

I have last years Nexus 7, generally keep it in my back pocket and sat on it way too many times, surprisingly without a problem using an inexpensive poetic case. Just got the Nexus 7 2013 and since I need a new case, thought I'd ask first if anyone can suggest a case to prevent a cracked screen.
Simple, don't keep it in the back pocket.
No seriously, you are bound to crack the screen one day. You won't be lucky every time.

From my order confirmation email: Poetic HardBack Protective Case for the Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus (Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer". I'm using it now with the new N7, isn't a perfect fit but better than nothing until the new case ships.

How well protected is your Nexus 7?

I plan on keeping this tablet for many many years. It's just perfect for me. So I want to protect it as best as possible.
Right now all I'm using is a big laptop cover (I use it for every tablet I've had. All of them fit inside and that way I don't have to buy specific covers every time I change tablet).
I'm debating whether to buy a screen protector again or not. I tried a Spigen one (very expensive) and it had bubbles on one side that wouldn't go.
So how do you guys have your Nexus 7 protected? Only with a screen protector or a case? With both? Something else?

I have a ghost armor screen protector and a poetic folio case. I can't tell the screen protector is there and the case is a nice second line of defense. I don't understand people who complain about their screen cracking but don't have any protection?
I use a soft pouch for my 2013 Nexus 7, which I previously used for a year on my 2012 Nexus 7. It's actually the soft pouch that came with the Asus EEEPC 701 netbook, which I modified to to fit snugly.
It works pretty good, although I did manage to damage my 2012 N7 in it, though it was dropped onto a carpark from 6 feet, after it fell off a stack of books and paper while I was trying to get my car keys out of my pocket. It did several cartwheels and came to rest 3 metres away. All it suffered was a small chunk missing from the silver bezel on the corner. Had it been pouchless, it would almost certainly have suffered a smashed screen etc.
Long story short: I only use a custom soft-pouch for my Nexus, and it works pretty good.
Just got a poetic slimline case on mine. Good enough for me.

The original case had three magnets. People complained that the case was too hard to open (and there were two other very minor issues). The case was modified and all customers who purchased the original case received a free replacement. I am still using the original case as there is absolutely nothing wrong with the design or functionality.
I guess they changed the design because the case now costs less to manufacture. Remember, the customer is always right, even when they are not.

I only have a pouch and a screen protector. Get a screen protector. It really protects your screen from cracking during drops. So not only it protects your screen from scratching, it also absorbs the impact from dropping.
I have an Xtreme Guard screen protector and a rooCASE Origami SlimShell case. The device is well protected with this smart case that provides a stand in portrait or landscape. I have had small mobile devices around since the mid 80's and I have seen what evil lurks out there for them, not the least of which is gravity. While I like the look of a naked device, it's no use to me broken.

I'd suggest this: http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimli...d=1388576970&sr=8-2&keywords=slimline+nexus+7 if you really want to protect your device.

Actually that was my first choice, the price was good and look nice, but some comments complain that this case don't have good duration and start feel apart with not so much time of use. I notice that the corners of Slimline are hard plastic that isn't shock resistant material like TPU. Also I just want some extra protection without all extras that have smart cases. Anyway thanks for your suggestion.
Snugg case + 3mk Solid screen protector.
