Back Pocket Case - Screen Protection? - Nexus 7 (2013) Accessories

I have last years Nexus 7, generally keep it in my back pocket and sat on it way too many times, surprisingly without a problem using an inexpensive poetic case. Just got the Nexus 7 2013 and since I need a new case, thought I'd ask first if anyone can suggest a case to prevent a cracked screen.

Simple, don't keep it in the back pocket.
No seriously, you are bound to crack the screen one day. You won't be lucky every time.

which Poetic case did you use on your old N7?

From my order confirmation email: Poetic HardBack Protective Case for the Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus (Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer". I'm using it now with the new N7, isn't a perfect fit but better than nothing until the new case ships.

Very nice of them. However I'm not noticing the device going to sleep when the cover is folded back. The other two issues are not problematic for me -- I'm glad the case fits snugly and won't open unless I intend to open it.
Side note -- I ordered the " Poetic Slimline Portfolio Case for Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus Black(Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer Sold by Smart Shop Online" on July 28 from Amazon and received a case that, size-wise, fit but was cut for the 2012 model (no camera hole, one speaker cutout at the bottom of the case). After returning it I saw that the description for it was revised to allow you to select from the 2012, 2013 and Nexus 10 model. Luckily that case fit perfectly. I wonder what that was all about.

I agree with your sentiment. I like the strong closure of the 3 magnets and the snug fit. Mine also does not go to sleep when the cover is folded back.
I just received my white one today and you figured since they just released the white it would have the update but nope I have 3 magnets on mine. Let's see if I get the email.

Poetic Slimline case for the Nexus 7(2013) REVIEW AND LINK!

I bought this case in August when I got my Nexus 7, and I don't look back! This case is a beast, its not only quite cheap, but it is also good quality, and it gives the Nexus 7 a classy look when carrying it. Its got all cut outs for the power, vol up/down rocker as well as a cut out for the camera on the back!.
Please do me a favor and check out my review video on the case on YouTube(link below). Please like and subscribe too as it helps a lot!! If you'd like to buy one of these from Amazon, there's a link in the description of the video and I will also post a link in this Forum thread too! thanks a lot!

They are pretty good about addressing customer complaints too. I ordered one in late August when I got my Nexus 7 and by early September I received a second case completely unexpectedly with a note about how the new one had been changed to correct customer concerns. Two cases for $12? Not too bad!
Is it really protective though ?
It looks very good but I'm concerned about sturdiness as I always accidently drop my devices..

It will protect from wear in a bag or something like that. Because its a rigid case, I don't think the fall protection would be that great (besides the screen which obviously would benefit from any case with a front cover). I have not dropped mine while in the case so I cannot speak to its just how much protection it affords. I mainly only use the case when I travel or bring it to work because I don't want it getting scratched up in my bag.
It's a Nice Case
It's a nice, practical case, though I doubt it would be a lot of help for dropping it. It also works with the Tylt Vu wireless charger.

Received my poetic slimline case for the N7 2013 and it looks like they sent me the older version. I bought it through a 3rd party seller on Amazon.
The auto wake works but would like the newer version.
I absolutely love my slimline. Bought it in gray and its the best case I've owned for any device. My only discrepancy is the flap takes some getting used to when trying to use it as a stand.

If you want real protection, get the Poetic Revolution, or the Gumdrop case http://www.amazon.com/Gumdrop-Drop-...id=1386303182&sr=8-1&keywords=gumdrop+nexus+7
Those are 2 of the most rugged cases made. I wish Ballistic made cases for the Nexus 7, as I've taken my Infuse phone and purposely thrown it 20ft up into the air and onto concrete just to prove how good the case is.
two months of use and the hidden shoddiness of so much Chinese merchandize is rearing its ugly head in the Poetic Slimline case. the magnets have loosened to the point of falling out and the plastic around them is cracking. Two months !
Thing flew out of my coat pocket getting into an SUV this morning.
The case took all the damage. Some scuffs on the front. Freaked out, and inspected the tablet. Still flawless.
Now I'm using the revised one they sent me a week after I ordered the original. Knew the free case would come in handy one day.
I had the original on there since they were first released and it still had no signs of wear. No cracking, peeling, nothing.
Highly recommend the case.

THINNEST case w/auto-wake function?

I want something as close to the iPad Smart Case as possible: super-thin, able to function as a stand, but with the auto-wake functionality. Any suggestions?
Poetic Slimline is your best bet.

I am also using the Poetic Slimline. Very happy with it. Auto-wake, miracast with PTV3000 and wireless charging with Lugulake all work properly when using this case.
This is what I use. Found the folding too stiff on the poetic. This is just like my smart Cover was on the iPad mini (except it has a back cover)

I bought the Nillkin V Series because it was the sleekest case I could find. It fulfills the two conditions in the thread title, but the stand function seems a bit unstable.
I take that thing everywhere and it's been holding up quite well.
People have been talking about the Mofi case lately, but it's only available in green, orange, brown and teal (which Mofi laughingly calls blue).
The brown version is only available on ebay.
The new cases by Seido are also worth a look -- though if you want one, you might want to wait for a sale.
My roocase slim works great. Origami version I think it's called. 15$

MoKo case and I'm very pleased
I got the MoKo when it first came out, shortly after I got the N7. I've been very happy with it, the tablet is held firmly, but can be removed without a lot of force. I have another very similar case that holds the tablet so tight that I'm concerned when I try to remove it (I've decided to use that one for a car mount system I'm building as I know there's no chance it will fall out!) The smart on/off works great and the cover stays closed with magnets also. It took me a little while to get the bend lines to flex properly so that the stand functions worked, but after a few days it has been no problem. It still looks new after 4 months, no frayed edges, it goes with me everywhere, everyday. It's got to be one of the best cases I've ever had (no I don't work for the company, nor do any friends or relatives).

Brown is normally a low-key color, but Mofi outlines it in white, which makes it look garish.
I liked the orange case best myself but wish the surrounding plastic were black.
Still, the few people who own both the MoKo and Mofi cases and post here have claimed the Mofi is noticeably better made.
How are the magnets on your MoKo -- does the cover stay closed if you hold it upside down? Does the stand stay in place? I've read good things about those features.

Just purchased and "put on" the rooCASE Origami Slimshell. It's got a polycarbonate shell back and a light flap (which turns on/off the unit) which can be "folded" to support the unit in landscape or portrait mode. I have a Nexus 7 (2012) I'm about to sell on which I used both the Speck Fitfolio and an Incipio unir. I preferred the Speck because of its clasp, but I understand that the Speck version for the Nexus FHD 2013 doesn't have the magnet for on/off ability.
If you want slim, take a look at the rooCASE. With the case on the unit is still just about a half inch thick.

Not happening on mine. I think there are two different cases called "Origami." Mine is the SlimShell. I did have issues with the unit turning off from the magnets on the Speck case on my 2012 Nexus.

The magnet is very good but the stand is a bit stiff even after using it for months and months on end so it doesn't always stay in but that's a minor inconvenience, but for the most part it works fine even when the stand comes out it still tends to stay in the same spot so I'm not really disappointed.

What's odd about the Play Store's specs for the black, gray/red, white/red and blue/red Nexus 7 2013 cases is that no mention is made of the kinds of materials used or whether there are magnets. What's odd about the ad copy is that no mention is made of features other than the fit's being exact.
I wouldn't want to spend $50 on a case for a $270 device -- even a white 32GB N7 (2013) -- but I'd be especially reticent not knowing if the interior was real or synthetic leather or the exterior, real fabric -- let alone whether the cover would actually stay closed.

The Google cover has no magnets anywhere. The gray is a denim-like fabric and the other two felt like synthetic leather to me. All the colors smell horrible.

MoKo case has been excellent both function AND value
I use MoKo for Nexus 7 (2013), iPad mini, and iPad Air. It has been outstanding for ALL tablets in a variety of environments. It fits snugly, all ports and holes line up nice and square. Wireless charging perfect. The price <$20 incl. shipping.. (The Apple Air case is almost $90, MoKo gets the job done for under $20 shipping incl. I'd buy a MoKo in a heartbeat for my HP TouchPad if I could locate one. I have about half a dozen other cases for different usages, but the MoKo is on %90 of the time. GOOD STUFF!

How well protected is your Nexus 7?

I plan on keeping this tablet for many many years. It's just perfect for me. So I want to protect it as best as possible.
Right now all I'm using is a big laptop cover (I use it for every tablet I've had. All of them fit inside and that way I don't have to buy specific covers every time I change tablet).
I'm debating whether to buy a screen protector again or not. I tried a Spigen one (very expensive) and it had bubbles on one side that wouldn't go.
So how do you guys have your Nexus 7 protected? Only with a screen protector or a case? With both? Something else?

I have a ghost armor screen protector and a poetic folio case. I can't tell the screen protector is there and the case is a nice second line of defense. I don't understand people who complain about their screen cracking but don't have any protection?
I use a soft pouch for my 2013 Nexus 7, which I previously used for a year on my 2012 Nexus 7. It's actually the soft pouch that came with the Asus EEEPC 701 netbook, which I modified to to fit snugly.
It works pretty good, although I did manage to damage my 2012 N7 in it, though it was dropped onto a carpark from 6 feet, after it fell off a stack of books and paper while I was trying to get my car keys out of my pocket. It did several cartwheels and came to rest 3 metres away. All it suffered was a small chunk missing from the silver bezel on the corner. Had it been pouchless, it would almost certainly have suffered a smashed screen etc.
Long story short: I only use a custom soft-pouch for my Nexus, and it works pretty good.
Just got a poetic slimline case on mine. Good enough for me.

My Nexus7 just fell off from the bed and although wasn't a hard hit this was enough to crack a corner a little, I never thought that this tablet was so fragile. So now I will buy a TPU case to protect that damaged corner and avoid others. That's slim plastic line around the Nexus 7 2013 screen is very fragile.

The original case had three magnets. People complained that the case was too hard to open (and there were two other very minor issues). The case was modified and all customers who purchased the original case received a free replacement. I am still using the original case as there is absolutely nothing wrong with the design or functionality.
I guess they changed the design because the case now costs less to manufacture. Remember, the customer is always right, even when they are not.

I only have a pouch and a screen protector. Get a screen protector. It really protects your screen from cracking during drops. So not only it protects your screen from scratching, it also absorbs the impact from dropping.
I have an Xtreme Guard screen protector and a rooCASE Origami SlimShell case. The device is well protected with this smart case that provides a stand in portrait or landscape. I have had small mobile devices around since the mid 80's and I have seen what evil lurks out there for them, not the least of which is gravity. While I like the look of a naked device, it's no use to me broken.

Actually that was my first choice, the price was good and look nice, but some comments complain that this case don't have good duration and start feel apart with not so much time of use. I notice that the corners of Slimline are hard plastic that isn't shock resistant material like TPU. Also I just want some extra protection without all extras that have smart cases. Anyway thanks for your suggestion.

[Q] Screen Durability

My kids both have the original Nexus 7 and are both about to go on their 3rd screen replacement. This is frustrating as only one was caused by a severe drop. At this point, we are considering a tablet upgrade rather than another $50 screen repair. Easily cracked screens seems to be a very common problem on the original Nexus 7. Has screen durability improved on the 2013 Nexus 7, or should I look to another brand?

The screen in other tablets aren't really different if not the same. You should just buy a case and a tempered glass screen protector

The bigger the glass, the easier it breaks. Period.
My 2013 "Deb" got a busted screen after a 2 foot drop despite having the rather thick Poetic GraphGrip installed. Finally got it fixed this week after being down for several months.
I've gone now to flip cover cases. Not sure if it will help, but after the royal pain that was changing out the screen, and also having my N4 busted by a relative I let hold it, I'm convinced the trouble is worth it.

I had the Poetic GraphGrip on it when it got busted. If it lands on the FRONT of the screen, this type of case does not help. Same story with my N4 also.
So I replaced it with a Poetic Slimline http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimline-Function-Manufacturer-Warranty/dp/B00E5NOXM4/ as I'm pretty certain it was more the actual impact to the glass in both cases I've had broken screens than it was shock to the outside of the device.
I do, of course, miss the durability of my old G2X. That's the ONLY thing I miss about that phone, though. I dropped it on gravel once. Didn't break. But I didn't notice I dropped it, and then proceeded to STAND on it while a friend was silently trying to tell me where my phone was. Got a gouge on the screen but no crack.
