It would be better to go back to full stock and then root thereafter. There is a modified (pre-rooted) stock 4.3 rom but this comes with the modified MJ2 bootloader so flashing it could cause a brick. You could flash simultaneously with the 4.3 (MJB) bootloader & modem to avoid the brick but the process gets complicated.
You may go to the thread below for full stock 4.3 restore instructions...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Once you are done with this, there are several ways to root. CF-Auto Root is the most basic. If this doesn't work, you could try Option 2 in the thread below ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
My preferred method of rooting is, however, SafeRoot. Unlike other methods, this doesn't trip your warranty bit - if this is still relevant. You can see download links and instructions in the thread below....

Do I need to root my phone to flash Stock roms via Odin? I want to flash the Stock rom and I wonder if it gonna lose the IMEI? thanks guys
Nope. But you do need root to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. There may be another method but im not familiar with it at the moment.
Anyway you can easily dl one of the stock firmwares from samfirmware.com and install using odin. Provided you just want pure stock.
And you shouldn't have to worry about losing your imei flashing stock with odin. I dont recall that ever hapoening. Besides, imei issues have been solved. Just check the dev section for info.

btw, I'm on stock with latest Tmo update now. Let say I want to flash stock without that update (stock before the update). how does it change my stock recovery? is the recovery still the stock with latest Tmo update?
I dont really understand how the stock recovery works. after I apply the update, is the update applied to the stock recovery too?
As far as I am aware it will rewrite your stock recovery back to whatever version you are installing as well. So long as you use odin and a full firmware file from Samsung.

If you flash the official Samsung 4.3 Jellybean MK2 odin flash firmware you cannot go
back to the stock 4.2.2 Jellybean MDL firmware whether you root your phone or not.
Rooting the 4.3 official jellybean odin flash firmware will trip the knox counter unless
you do a lot of reading and find the alternative rooting methods here in xda.
Good luck!
Hey everyone!
Just picked up a shiny new T-Mobile S4. It has 4.2.2 on it right now, and is asking me to update. Should I root and not update, or update then root?
I plan to use the stock rom, but I want the following features:
1) Ability to turn encryption on and off (Pretty sure Samsung devices allow this)
2) Skvalex's Call Recorder
3) Google Wallet
4) Clockwork or TWRP recovery
5) Root (duh)
What's your opinion/thoughts/fatherly advice/etc...
Thanks
Edit: Either way I don't know that much about Knox, but I hear it's annoying and can interfere with su and root apps. I'd love to either keep it off my phone, or keep it disabled.
Don't take the OTA update.
You can use CF Autoroot to root, install a custom recovery and flash any 4.3 base ROM such as dbombROM or Wicked.
You'll also need to update the modem to the mk2 modem.
This way you can stay on the mdl Knox free bootloader. Anytime you want to go back to totally stock you can Odin the stock Rom plus you're still able to reset the flash counter.

1. Root
2. Install recovery
3. Make backup
4. Download and flash stock 4.3 ROM via custom recovery... Check thread titles and/or the first post of a thread of whichever ROM in the Android Development section. There are mostly stock (CIQ free, KNOX free, deodex, etc) there which are listed in the thread title.
5. Download and flash MK2 modem
6. Enjoy

If you want to use the stock ROM you can flash jovy's stock 4.3 ROM
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
I think jovy's and omnifarious's are both totally stock 4.3 ROM. Wicked, Infamous and dbombRom are base on stock 4.3 Rom with additional mods built in.

My phone is stock rooted but not on Mr Robinson's. Performance wise it should be same or better than stock ROM since it's the stock ROM.

Are you saying the MrRobinson's ROM isn't rooted ? Did you try the version 2 he posted ? I know that the first one had some issues.
If you are on 4.1.2 and only use PC odin for flashing then you can flash this stock rooted, knox-free ROM I uploaded here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2636552
This ROM will not update your bootloader and you can switch back to 4.1.2 using PC odin.

You do not understand me, right now it has 4.3 stock Rom with Knox, and I did root with chainfire auto-root, but does not work!
It do not has any root access, is impossible flash custom recovery.
Can I unroot, and install via Odin stock firmware 4.1.2, it has any issue?
I appreciated your help.
No problem,
You can install Mr Robinsons root 66 rom, make sure you download the v2 version and you will be all set.

But, Can I flash anhoter Rom?
If I downgrade via Odin, with stock firmware, android 4.1.2. Can I?
Because I would like to flash some cm Rom.
Your phone is already on 4.3 bootloader and there is no way to downgrade that.
But you can still flash any 4.1.2 ROM'S as long as you do not flash the bootloader. Almost all custom ROM's come without bootloader so you should be able to flash them via CWM,TWRP or mobile din.

How do you go back to 4.3 after taking the OTA and then rooting it? I dont want to brick my phone. I have the 4.3 stock rom from sammobile that i could flash using Odin but not sure if that will work?

Best practice is to flash custom recovery then a custom rom. If you try using odin or other methods then an issue may/can arise. If you only flash custom roms you will have no issues with bricking hard or soft.

I used Odin to do a complete restore back to 4.3. I like a fresh start, seems I have less issues that way. Worked great then I rooted with cf auto root, then back to smoothest rom 2/3 imo.
