Unfortunately it isn't as easy as on the galaxy w. There are a few rooting methods but they're firmware specific and involve Flashtool! But there's a new app, Towelroot... its suppose to be an universal rooting app... Check it out... There's also a post in the Q&A section about it...

for rooting, go to http://towelroot.com/.
to unroot, download SuperSU app. there is an option to fully unroot.

[Q] Xperia Arc S Root

Hello xda forum!
I´m kinda noob in the world of custimizing android devices, my first device was a SGA so that was an easy one, but now I have a xperia arc s with the official 4.0.4 rom made by sony the build number is 4.1.B.0 and I want to root it but i can´t, I have tried the DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su.zip method but it failed i think because it requires the build no 4.1.A , the 2nd atempt was to flash a kernel made also by doomlord to put the build number into 4.1.A or somthing like that but it also failed becuse i can´t boot into fastboot mode, so i made a research around xda forum and I found that some devices are locked by the mobile operator, so they can´t boot into fastboot mode. Now my question is does this device is rubish or do I have a solution? what can i do?
thanx!! to all the people that can help me.
P.D.1: sorry for my bad english xD
P.D.2: don´t be like "uuhh! look around xda, you´ll find the answer" please I need some help.

[Q] Xperia S - ICS rooted and I'd like to update

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this has been answered before as I've actually found many threads but they all seem to redirect to the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
My questions is as follows; using the method above, how can I update an Xperia S that is already rooted without loosing root? The thread above seems to explain how to root altogether, but I just want to update and keep the root. Thanks in advance for any help provided. My Xperia S is on 6.1.A.0.452 and I'd like to have 6.1.A.2.45. I've also seen people talk about JellyBean but as far as I know that's not available on the Xperia S until February, how are these people getting it?
.45 and .50 can be rooted...

Could I bother you with a guide based on the method shown in the following link? I would really appreciate it. I'm totally a noob, but I learn really fast, so guidance for this rookie will guarantee you that I will learn to do things on my own. Thanks!

Just use the binary root tool at the top of the development forum

The xperia play is almost unbrickable. If you download fkashtool and the stock ftf for your phone it can solve most software problems. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2184897 this link has everything you need to know about the play. It will link you to guides on how to root and unlock the bootloader. Galaxy s bootloader is already unlocked but sony is different. You must unlock yourself and you cant flash kernel with odin anymore. You must use fastboot. Look at the guides in the thread i linked you to and you should be fine. (My brother has a galaxy s so i know all about flashing it) also before installing a rom make sure its for your version (verizon or gsm/att/tmobile)

If your Bootloader can be unlocked - process is same for all Xperia devices.
Go to Sony web or any Doomlord thread and find a link for unlocking bootloader.
Prepare IMEI and proceed to Sony page, you'll receive key in a short period.
But make sure you backup TA partition and you have kernel with recovery to flash...
I mean, if there's no threads, kernels or ROMs - what's the purpose of unlocking it?

Does this work on xperia s lt26i on 6.2.B.1.96 firmware
sorry to be asking this..
i can't root it because it says "device detected LT26W <6.2.B.1.96>"
but i already flashed it to .211 using flashtool.then it still detects my Sony Xperia Acro S build number 6.2.B.1.96.
why is this happening?is it because the flashing didn't work out properly?

Any troubleshooting if this doesn't work?
I'm trying to run this on my Xperia Z tablet (SGP312), and the batchfile is just stuck at "--- WAITING FOR DEVICE".
Any suggestions on what one might try to get it to work?
I have checked the USB settings, I have the latest Android SDK and Sony's PC Companion recognises the tablet...

I would suggest using towelroot app, maybe the error is caused due to new firmware version.
Hi!

Hi guys I just tried to root my Xperia ZL with 4.4.4 it's a C6506 with 292 kernel
It just sits on Waiting for device. Drivers are installed, install from unknown sources is checked, developer mode is on and usb debug mode on.
Anyone able to help?
Also in that secret screen where you can see root unlock enable says NO (cannot unlock this phone). Am I screwed pretty much? I saw another thread in here which requires 'unlocking' but according to the test my phone's boot loader cannot be unlocked.
I just want to root the phone.
Hi guys,
I tried to root my xperial zl c6506 with kitkat 4.4.4 OTA update and 292 kernel.
It just sits on waiting for. ADB drivers are installed. Set to USB debug mode and install unknown sources.
Also note worthy In service menu it also says bootlocker unload: no So I cannot unlock.
I just want to root the device so I can modify certain things.
