The xperia play is almost unbrickable. If you download fkashtool and the stock ftf for your phone it can solve most software problems. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2184897 this link has everything you need to know about the play. It will link you to guides on how to root and unlock the bootloader. Galaxy s bootloader is already unlocked but sony is different. You must unlock yourself and you cant flash kernel with odin anymore. You must use fastboot. Look at the guides in the thread i linked you to and you should be fine. (My brother has a galaxy s so i know all about flashing it) also before installing a rom make sure its for your version (verizon or gsm/att/tmobile)

I answer myself...
The secuence is:
- download flashtool. I used v0.3 in win7
- download the firm you want. My choose was Generic Middle East North Africa (Latin) - LT18i 4.0.2.A.0.42 CUSTOMIZED-MEL [1254-2282] from HERE
- Unrar the flashtool and put the firm in the folder called "firmwares"
- Connect the phone pressing "BACK" button
- Lauch the flashtool (Administrator), press Flash and follow the instructions.
Thats all!
Xperia Arc S (Orange Spain) -> unbranded 2.3.4 (4.0.2.A.0.42)

You dont need to flash a custom firmware to get root, the latest version of flashtool has one-click root using zergrush.

I've flashed my arc using some gigbeat tool. Does it mean I've unlocked my boatloader? Also there are options like install though recovery. What it means?
In many themes posts, I've found that reboot option included, what it means?
I saw cyanogen mod for arc. It's awesome and I wanna.get it. I've downloaded stable version for arc from website. What to do next??Please give me link. And can I get all Sony Ericsson features like timescape including widget , music player, facebook inside Xperia etc. Is it worth?
Xperia Arc (rooted)
1.
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=anzu
Download last one.
2. read the tutorial here
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Xperia_Arc:_Full_Update_Guide
3. timescape including widget , music player, facebook inside Xperia etc.
wont work on cyanogenMOD.
it just work with STOCK ROM, STOCK KERNEL, STOCK LAUNCHER.

Hello !
I just bought my Xperia Play, I wasn't expecting it but since it's price was very low I bought it.
I'm familiar with XDA because I own a X8 too.
Can someone help me introducing to Xperia Play forum? Like telling me wich roms worth trying, some root, unlocking bootloaders or installing recoveries tutorials. Just so that I have something to start with.
Thanks in advance
DoomKernel is really good ..
And all the Xperia S themed Roms are good too
If you flash DooMKernel you have root as well...
Recommended is a unlocked bootloader

That's nice since I really like Xperia S style
Is there a tutorial to unlock bootloader, I'm probably not going to that now, just something like 15 days from now.
Btw is there xperia s theme, launcher and so on for stock 2.3.2 without root?

to unlock bootloader even if you lose warranty ...yes this is possible for your phone
in fact for certain releases of these phone models :
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ PLAY
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ arc
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ arc S
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ neo
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ neo V
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ pro
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ mini
Sony Ericsson Xperia ™ mini pro
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ ray
Sony Ericsson Xperia™ active
Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™
Sony Xperia™ S
Sony Xperia™ P
Sony Xperia™ U
Sony Xperia™ sola
to unlock bootloader proceed with the first step at Sony site
you have to flash a stock-based ROM if you do not want to unlock bootloader
this case is the same- you lose warranty
look here for stock-based ROMs
never flash a ROM not made for your phone
that means, that i CANT install cyanogenmod with a locked bootloader?

yes you get the point !
I understand your frustration
but there are plans to release an official ICS for this phone check Sony site or by PC Companion
in this case you will never lose warranty and ICS is very good for your... in fact amazing Arc S phone :good:
PS
yes you can flash an unrooted stock-ROM before you send it to service ..
how about if you have a hardware failure ?
Ok... thank you :good:
But arconium (stock-based rom) also recomendeds Unlocked bootloader.
The point why i dont have to root my phone is that i can flash back to an unrooted firmware and then i think the support wont know that i rooted my phone ( i hope so )

I like that you really want Cyanogen on your phone
me to I made a custom rom for my phone here
this rom has Cyanogen Launcher just because I like this OS
nope no chance to have Cyangoen without an unlocked bootloader
there are little chances to find one to work without S-off
It's something about base address of the kernel/protected bootloader/encryption something like this.. You have to assume the risks if you want it !
ok ! thank u very much, u helped me alot :good::good::good:

Hello everybody
Any one can help me i have a R800a Rooted and with CWM! with LOCKED Bootloader ,but i cant install Custom ROMS like ICS pureness , i install but they dont boot
Any one can help me with this?
I dont understand why dont boot custom roms :S
because you need to have an unlocked bootloader
I agree... I'm a noob myself but I've read enough on xda to realize that most roms will not work with locked bootloader. I have a locked bootloader R800at but I was able to flash a firmware update to 4.0.x from the R800i and then installed clockwork mod and then installed Gin2Jellybean. The reason that a lot of roms won't work btw is because you need a certain Kernel and to flash those you need an unlocked bootloader. It stinks that we need that but there is another way that I think is riskier to unlock your bootloader. It is called a test point connection. Look up Gin2Jellybean on xda as well as test point unlocking if you're interested. But I love the rom Gin2Jellybean and it is compatible with a locked bootloader. Hope this was helpful! Please press the thanks if it was so I know I helped!

Also Gin2Jellybean is very compatible with most anything. Especially if you make sure you set your cpu to the performance setting in rom toolbox. And it fully supports the game pad and Crash Bandicoot as well... You will need to make backups of say crash Bandicoot though before you flash it... It will only install pretty much the bare essentials

Just to clarify this thread from users input...
you need to see in the rom that says tutorial for locked bootloader...
and also read the instructions carefully as locked bootloader is very hard and time consuming which depends on rom...
also if your reflashing before doing install the kernel on that rom thread as that is important or you'll have wifi problems and root issues as such...
To run ics you need an ics kernel, maybe the xperia neo l ics kernel, try flash it via flashtool after you install the ics rom
