Slim and fast rom - Defy General

Hi to all
i'm using a defy+ only as GPS navigation. I'm also not using any simcard, just GPS and WiFI.
Do you know any stripped down rom with nothing installed except wifi and gps? I'm looking for a rom with maximum battery savings and quicker boot time.
Everything else is unneded.

You could try Maniac103's build of CM7.2. (It's available from his GitHub, and a slightly newer version is posted here.)
CM7.2 is one of the fastest and most stable roms for the Defy, and Maniac103's version has an LTO data download feature that helps a lot with GPS. If you enable that feature (it's either in settings or in the Defy Parts app, I don't remember exactly where), the phone will download the satellite Long Term Orbit data whenever you're connected to wifi. This LTO data is valid for either 7 days or 30 days (depending on which option you choose), and it helps the GPS to get a fix very quickly, even when you're offline. That's one of the few features I really miss from CM7.

Thank you for the response. My defy+ is actually on charging, when full charge i'l ltry to flash that rom.
So, with LTO data for 30 days, I can use WiFI (or any network connection) once in 30 days and getting fast fix for GPS?

I'm not using CM7 anymore (I've updated my Defy to Android 4.4 SlimKat), and I don't remember exactly where the LTO setting was. I think it was under Settings > Device settings, or something like that.

Yes, you should get a faster GPS fix if you connect to wifi every 30 days. I believe it only downloads when connected with wifi, not a cellular data connection.

Let me check. Before flashing a custom ROM, GPS fix in my actual location wasen't done in 10 minutes.
Now i've downloaded a monthly LTO data, let me see if fix is quicker.
EDIT: any way to greatly speed up the boot time? Almost 30 seconds stuck in motorola logo....

Still no improvements, even with A-GPS and LTO data downloaded.
No fix in 5 minutes and just 2 sat found (as shown by GPS Status app). Same location with Galaxy S4 will result in a perfect fix in a couple of seconds.

The first GPS fix always takes a while, unless you have an active data connection for A-GPS, which uses cellular towers and/or wifi to help determine your location. (Also, the Galaxy S4 has much faster hardware, but I'd guess that if you reboot your Galaxy S4 in airplane mode, and then try to get a GPS fix, it will take more than a few seconds.)
Make sure that the phone is outdoors under open sky, and that it is stationary while the GPS looks for the first fix. After that, subsequent fixes should be much faster, at least until the next reboot.

Is not an hardware issue. Defy doesn't see satellites. I've tried with S4 in airplane mode and fix is almost istant

Did you reboot the S4 in airplane mode, then try? That's pretty impressive if it can really get a cold-start fix that fast.
For me, a cold-start fix on the Defy usually takes a couple of minutes without a data connection, and sometimes it takes a minute or so before it even begins picking up satellites, so I guess that's normal for this hardware. On CM7.2 with the LTO data, though, it seemed a lot faster: a cold-start fix usually only took 30 seconds or so under a clear sky.

Even with LTO and a A-GPS data downloaded, gps fix requires many, many minutes.

After successul fix, subsequent fixes are faster even after a cold reboot (i don't know why, but is ok)
How can I decrease the boot time ?

CM7 boots about as quickly as any rom for the Defy, so you may not be able to make much improvement there. You could try uninstalling/disabling system apps that run at startup; that might help a little. Overclocking from the bootmenu will also help.

You could use an app like this to see what applications and processes are running after a fresh reboot.
You can disable system apps using the android settings menu. I don't remember exactly how to do it on CM7, but on Android 4.4 you can manage apps under Settings > Apps > All. (You can also access the app manager by hitting the menu button > Manage apps.) Select the system app you want to disable, and click the "disable" button. I think the procedure was similar on CM7.
Alternatively, you can just delete a system app using a root-enabled file explorer like ES File Explorer. In ES File Explorer, go to Tools and enable the "Root Explorer" option, then navigate to the system/app directory of your phone's internal memory and delete whatever apks you don't want. (Be careful not to delete an app if you don't know what it does, or you might cause more problems. If you run into errors or your phone is unable to boot after deleting system apps, just re-flash the CM7 zip from recovery.)

Hi, I'm also using my Defy+ for offline GPS (without sim, too)
Currently running Omnirom builds by Struq and Kayant (look in the "Omnirom for Defy" thread).
- Boot time is approx. 1'30, but no big deal for me (I'm not sure you will find custom roms with really faster boot times?)
- GPS hooking up takes some minutes (~maybe 3-5 mins) but I'm not even sure if I'm using a gps fix or not!
- battery usage : GPS & wifi are the most battery hungry components anyway
- I don't use Gapps , so that would qualify for "stripped down", only F-droid repository for apps, and the great OsmAnd for GPS nav :good:

Hello,
I have 2 defy "MB525 green lens" phones. On one of them (bought new) GPS works very well, 10-12 sattelittes at all time, first fix in cca 4 minutes withouth data connection. The only thing I've noticed is that the GPS really hates to "cold-start" when the phone is moving, i.e. inside a car. After fix, the signal strength ans sattelite count is OK.
On the second defy, GPS hardly sees a satellite. But the phone is from a hill climber, and I've got the phone with a smashed screen, the guy told me the phone falled some 30 m before hitting the ground... On opening it up I've noticed the PCB is chipped on one of the upper corners. New digitizer and everything else works....except for that GPS.
Perhaps the GPS chip is the most fragile component inside the phone... I don't know. But I think the software is not the cause here.

Yet another uncommon GPS problem

Okay, this seems just another common GPS problem with a DHD. But I find it intriguing.
It happens to me since I bought the phone, second hand.
I've already made the mod to the antena (soldered wire) and use the AGPS Patch and FasterFix to choose the server. Nothing solved it.
So, when the GPS works, it works really fine, no abnormal signal loss, not too much lag.
Note that it only works fine when I turn data ON, so it can download agps info.
There comes a day when I turn data on, go outside, turn Sygic on (or other gps program), and no satellites at all. GPS Status indicates the same.
I can go for more than 15 minutes without gps fix. It can go for longer, but I don't have the patience. I reset the AGPS info with GPS Status and download a fresh one and the problem remains.
If I restart the phone, 99% of the times, it solves the problem.
Now, I found out that a program called Quick Reboot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...Glub3NvZnQuYW5kcm9pZC5RdWlja1JlYm9vdEZyZWUiXQ) avoids me having to restart the phone. Plus, GPS Doctor is quite efficient too.
So, I have to run Quick Reboot, then GPS Doctor, then Sygic or other Nav Program. Not very handy, if you're already driving...
Now, what on earth is this?
Hardware seems fine, because it doesn't fail, for example in a 300 km trip. If it gets a fix, it stays on nicely.
It sounds a software problem, deep in the OS itself.
I'm on Android 2.3.7, CM 7.2, but tested this on various CM based roms, ICS, rooted OEM ROM and it behaves the same.
If anyone can help... or share experiences... Any devs?
Thanks
I dont think it is going to get any better than that. I have the same experience as well with ICS ROMs. However, some ROM's dont do it so often.
i have same issue on default rooted rom wwe3.12.405.1.....
it may be problem with some specific models or all od dhd series
and its very random and happens on trips mostly
agps /wifi/mobile data nothing fixes it
restart fixs issue instantly ...
once after restart gps gets fixed it works perfectly ...
I have this exact same problem, and I'll try your tip for using the Quick Reboot app.
I'd also recommend the app AGPS Injector which enables you to start GPS based apps e.g. navigation etc. 'via' AGPS injector. It automatically downloads AGPS info before starting the navigation app. You can even create homescreen shortcuts for navigator apps which do it all with one click. Perfect!
I'm going to try combining this with a Quick Reboot using Tasker, again so that it does it all with just one click. I'll report back if it works.
Yep, automated steps would be great, like:
auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
or even
Run Quick Reboot / quit Quick Reboot / auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
:silly:
Just got a total GPS blackout an hour ago, and the combination Quick Reboot + AGPS injector (bought the full version) didn't worked for me, despite 5 or 6 atempts.
Then gave up and just went for a try with Quick Reboot + GPS Doctor and got it working without rebooting. :good:
Sounds like I need to try GPS Doctor. I've had good success with AGPS Injector. For me, I spent ages trying to find an app which gave the same results as using the AGPS reset and download in GPS Test, and that did it. Maybe there's some regional variation.
Do those apps just force a download of the links in the gps.conf file?
Have created setups using Tasker which I'll try tomorrow. Also found the app Fast Reboot which does a similar thing to Quick Reboot, so I'll compare the two.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Yes, could be a regional variation.
Don't really know what the AGPS info download does.
I've used that Fast Reboot Pro program, but didn't do the trick for me.

[Q] How do I get the damn GPS to work on a mate's Desire Z?

Hey all. I have a mate who bought a HTC Desire Z (S-OFF,already rooted, running CWM at the time, and an updated ROM), and I have just about tried everything to get the GPS to work. I have flashed the latest TMoUS G2 radio/rcdata (26.13.04.19), wiped the EFS, put the Andromadus GPS fix on there, installed Andromadus Mimicry ROM – version 1.5.0, installed the Engineering HBOOT, reinstalled the ROM, and still the stupid GPS still won't lock onto a single satellite. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
Do you have a data plan or/and a wifi connection, with your DZ?
The A-GPS is much more quick to fix in this case, otherwise it can take several minutes...

I currently have no SIM for the phone, but I am using my home wifi for net connection. I left the phone out about 10 minutes, but it still is searching for a GPS signal.
You've probably tried that already, but still...
Install "GPS Status" app from store, it' free. Disable data connection. Power down the phone and take battery out. Next get into open area, put battery back in and power it on. Then launch GPS Status and let it work for some time, may take a while - 10 to 20 minutes. There is an option in this app settings to keep screen on, use that.
And make note of what happens on the screen, after some time green points should start appearing, those are sattelites.
If that won't work - try again with data connection on.

My GPS only find 1 satellite on my actual rom rootbox android 4.1.2 and I used all android 4.2.2 roms, with the same problem too.
Thanks

cm10.1-m3, litekernel, i927RUXKJ5 baseband.
You need 4 sats to get position, even in 2dimension (plane) you need distance from 3 points, because 2 cycle will have 2 intersection.
please european guys, respond the cuestion, only that way can find a solution together..

I'm using this spyke's guy cm rom with the kernel from kick buckowsky's pacman thread. But before I flashed that it worked with the original (lite) kernel. Again, it worked with the old dman's cm rom, but not with rootbox and never with any stock rom (ics nor gb). Modifying the surfgps and gps.conf has never really helped.
Sometimes (its really not typical) I simply dont get a lock now either, but after a reboot it works fine.(be sure to test it outdoors, under a roof it's really weak). I use sygic for navigation (it has downloadable offline maps) and I live in hungary, but when I was in Prague, it worked there well, too. Mobile data needs to be on, and those ticks that I posted before.
I hope you'll get the gps working I know how annoying a useless gps is.
well i´ve just tested the rom PACMAN by kick buttowski, and for me gps works on it, but reports only 2 sats. I know that it is a cm 10.1 issue, which i don´t know if spyke is working on in his rom or not??. While i´ll wait for the spyke´s new kernel cause litekernel I think is draining the battery so much for my daily use.
So I gather the rom is what causes the gps problem? my phone is healthy uuffff :victory:
mine works only with "wifi and mobile network location" checked, and it shows my location very fast, so I'm happy with that.
I have no clue what needs for "mobile network location", but it does its job well, since I see maximum 2 sats, while I have my position.

Seeing 2 satellites is part of a bug. The NEMA messages, raw satellite data, aren't coming out of the driver properly in the latest build. So your software will always show that there are 2 satellites. That's incorrect.
Wifi location works because the GPS coordinates of the MAC addresses of nearby base-stations are known. When people have this feature enabled, the phone will silently upload MAC addresses and lat/long. It also uses cell tower triangulation (this was how the first google maps worked before common phones had GPS in the old blackberry days.)
You'll notice if you ever move (from one house to another) it will take Goog a while to figure out that your home wifi base station has new GPS coordinates.
If you're out in the middle of nowhere, you won't be able to get any kind of lock like this.
But, I'm fairly certain while these roms are not reporting correct NEMA, they are actually getting a real GPS lock.
In other words, software that asks the API "What's my lat/long and accuracy?" will get a valid answer.
Software that asks the API for "exact, raw satellite data, I'll figure it out myself" gets garbage.
It works for me (Italy).
I still have the 2 sats bug but it seems i get a lock in 30 secs.
I even tried with no wifi and no data connection: same result. I got a lock in 30 seconds.
I havent tried a navigation tho.
Hi guys, I'm in the u.k, and as far as I'm aware, the only person in the country with one of these phones!
But,, gps works fine for me.
The phone can see 12 satalites, and have a lock on 9 of them, giving me an accuracy of 16 feet.
Only problem is I don't know what rom I'm on as the chap rooted it for me before I got it sendt over.
I have no bugs in the rom that I've ever noticed, its 4.0.4 but that's all I know, anyone know how I can find out?
I'm guessing its stock ics, and as no other roms seem to be stable or ever finised, there doesn't seem to be any point in flashing anything else, accept maybee the litekernal which is the only stable one I could find.. but since I don't know what rom I'm running, I can't tell if the kernal will work, unless anyone else knows?

For some reason and before I system update the tablet once more... Is your GPS working at all? so far I cannot lock to any satellites with GPS hardware enabled and google access turned on?! I do have the wifi location disabled do I need that enabled to make the built in GPS work?
I havent rebooted yet after initial boot and first system update and have the icon in top left corner saying there is another 55.1mb update...
everyone elses gps working without wifi location enabled?
i think enabling wifi allows gps to get a more accurate single by pinging the access points but it should still work with wifi disabled.

Powered off tablet and back on, finally got a gps icon searching, didnt find satellites at my desk where my galaxy s3 and sero 7 pro tablet get 9-17 locks..
Went by window and got 3 satellites not locked. quit gps status tried gps test and the gps icon is gone again and gps wont come on although its enabled. What gives? defective nexus 7? anyone else with same or similar issues?
No issues, using gps test, it locked on within 15 seconds or so, 12 of 17 sats. indoors.
Got it working finally, took awhile... Had to follow the directions here:

did not update maps from the stock one installed already.. went by window waiting 2 minutes and it finally downloaded AGPS data and finally saw 19 sats and locked on to 6-10 of them.. Now when I test with GPSTEST and GPS STATUS and MAPS everything is working like it should and it finds my location in about 15 seconds or so and its dead on 3-5 meters in MAPS and pointing correct direction for magnetometer sensor inside..
So if anyone else has issues try the instructions above!

Knock on Wood, I think I got the gps problems nipped in the butt!
I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!

WiFi allows a quick load of the agps almanac data. Without it, it may take several minutes with a clear sky view to get a complete load of the satellite almanac once loaded, it should be good for a rapid fix for several days. If used often enough, it will keep the almanac current and always get a fix within seconds..

Losing GPS signal while navigating

Hi,
I have a strange issue with my Gnex.
I used to run CM11 nightlies on my device, but I noticed that the device loses GPS signal while navigating (using Waze for example) and then it takes like 3-4 more minutes (if at all) to recover the signal.
So to test it, I flashed stock back (rom, recovery, kernel).
but I still have this issue. I cannot navigate 5 minutes straight without losing the GPS signal.
I tried to run GPSFix, but it didn't really help.
Any idea/suggestions what can I do?
thanks guys!

Is your device activated on a cell network? Gnex by default has assisted gps, so it needs a data connection to establish a fix. What you describe could happen as you leave Wi-Fi, have no signal, and it takes 3-4 minutes to grab the gps ephemeris data from satellites. Just a guess.
If this isn't your problem, have you tried using GPS status and toolbox app to Resetand redownload agps data?

Hey, thx for the reply.
Yes, I have a 3G connection and WIFI turned off.
I tried the toolbox, used it to reset data etc - but it didn't help
Well, the only way to truly know would be to flash a stock image and see if that works. If it doesn't, then you have a hardware problem.
Give GPS Test a go (search on Play store, I can't put external links here, it's the one from Chartcross Limited). It helped me a lot some time ago when I had your same problem.
