[Q] is your gps working with the wifi location disabled? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

For some reason and before I system update the tablet once more... Is your GPS working at all? so far I cannot lock to any satellites with GPS hardware enabled and google access turned on?! I do have the wifi location disabled do I need that enabled to make the built in GPS work?
I havent rebooted yet after initial boot and first system update and have the icon in top left corner saying there is another 55.1mb update...
everyone elses gps working without wifi location enabled?

i think enabling wifi allows gps to get a more accurate single by pinging the access points but it should still work with wifi disabled.

Powered off tablet and back on, finally got a gps icon searching, didnt find satellites at my desk where my galaxy s3 and sero 7 pro tablet get 9-17 locks..
Went by window and got 3 satellites not locked. quit gps status tried gps test and the gps icon is gone again and gps wont come on although its enabled. What gives? defective nexus 7? anyone else with same or similar issues?

No issues, using gps test, it locked on within 15 seconds or so, 12 of 17 sats. indoors.

Got it working finally, took awhile... Had to follow the directions here:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/maps/q24Cq4sQAtc
did not update maps from the stock one installed already.. went by window waiting 2 minutes and it finally downloaded AGPS data and finally saw 19 sats and locked on to 6-10 of them.. Now when I test with GPSTEST and GPS STATUS and MAPS everything is working like it should and it finds my location in about 15 seconds or so and its dead on 3-5 meters in MAPS and pointing correct direction for magnetometer sensor inside..
So if anyone else has issues try the instructions above!

Try this
Knock on Wood, I think I got the gps problems nipped in the butt!
I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!

WiFi allows a quick load of the agps almanac data. Without it, it may take several minutes with a clear sky view to get a complete load of the satellite almanac once loaded, it should be good for a rapid fix for several days. If used often enough, it will keep the almanac current and always get a fix within seconds..

[Q] GPS not working CM 7.2

So my GPS is not working on my Gio with CM 7.2 RC-1 Patch 4. Doesn't show my location. Used 2 different programs to see if it works : Endomondo, Google Maps latest version.
Works fine here! Download GPS Test app and then connect GPS. See if it detects and locks satellites or not.

Make sure you're connecting while your outside or at roof top; under open sky.
If you still don't see any activity in gps test app then download another app named FasterFix. Open it and select the server closet to you. You might get a quicker lock. Without that, gio takes a bit of time in connecting.
Okay thank you. I DL'd FasterFix. Got some readings on GPS Test. Still not showing my location on GMaps though. I'll let it search for half an hour or so under my window and then i'll see if works or not.

You're welcome. GMaps will show you your location once satellite gets locked and detects you. I'd advice you to go outside for better signal reception. When satellites will get locked, you'll see bars on GPS Test turning yellow/orange and on right side it'll show you number of satellites locked below "in-use".
Ok, went for a walk outside and got ~12 satellites and it was using 6-7 of them. So I know now that my GPS works

[Q][GPS]Hey guys/gals need some help.[SOLVED]

The problem: GPS Can't find location. (Samsung Galaxy S II TMobile)
A friend of mine have SGSII from TMo and the GPS and any app that uses location can't find the location, the phone is stock gingerbread no root nothing. We already uninstall Maps updates and re installed it, Cache and data was cleared too, we force stop the app do several reboots, WiFi is enabled and GPS enabled all settings on Menu>Settings>Location Services are enabled. What could be happening? There is any code to reset GPS or VRAM on the TMo variant?
Edit: We Also Factory Reset the device nothing yet... frustrating...
well get off wifi because using wifi allows you to be pinpointed with the wifi not the GPS.
then go stand outside for like 5 mins with the gps on. If that doesn't work. Download Fasterfix, choose location and click GO or whatever. Then go stand outside for quicker lockon.

no, never. And waiting more than 30 minutes..
gps doesnt work here with stock rom either.
I've tried many gps patch, but still nothing.
on stock rom I never got a lock, neither on rootbox(I also tried to edit the gps. conf and those stuffs, but nothing helped) , but with cm10 and cm10.1 it locks in seconds if I'm on the street, however it shows that only 2 sattelites can be seen. But my position is accurate

I think 3 sats are needed to work gps, I think your device use wifi to get your location, try to disable, and it wont work IMHO.

you're wrong, it locks up quickly without wifi and I can use it (sygic) for navigation as well. However as you can see it shows only 2 sattelites
mine works only when wifi enable, mine sees 2 sats sometime, but still no position. When I enable wifi location ( without wifi enable) it shows instantly my current location.

cm10.1-m3, litekernel, i927RUXKJ5 baseband.
You need 4 sats to get position, even in 2dimension (plane) you need distance from 3 points, because 2 cycle will have 2 intersection.
please european guys, respond the cuestion, only that way can find a solution together..
bubor, you think the problem is caused by the kernel or the rom?? or maybe our devices are defective? :crying:

I'm using this spyke's guy cm rom with the kernel from kick buckowsky's pacman thread. But before I flashed that it worked with the original (lite) kernel. Again, it worked with the old dman's cm rom, but not with rootbox and never with any stock rom (ics nor gb). Modifying the surfgps and gps.conf has never really helped.
Sometimes (its really not typical) I simply dont get a lock now either, but after a reboot it works fine.(be sure to test it outdoors, under a roof it's really weak). I use sygic for navigation (it has downloadable offline maps) and I live in hungary, but when I was in Prague, it worked there well, too. Mobile data needs to be on, and those ticks that I posted before.
I hope you'll get the gps working I know how annoying a useless gps is.
well i´ve just tested the rom PACMAN by kick buttowski, and for me gps works on it, but reports only 2 sats. I know that it is a cm 10.1 issue, which i don´t know if spyke is working on in his rom or not??. While i´ll wait for the spyke´s new kernel cause litekernel I think is draining the battery so much for my daily use.
So I gather the rom is what causes the gps problem? my phone is healthy uuffff :victory:
mine works only with "wifi and mobile network location" checked, and it shows my location very fast, so I'm happy with that.
I have no clue what needs for "mobile network location", but it does its job well, since I see maximum 2 sats, while I have my position.

Seeing 2 satellites is part of a bug. The NEMA messages, raw satellite data, aren't coming out of the driver properly in the latest build. So your software will always show that there are 2 satellites. That's incorrect.
Wifi location works because the GPS coordinates of the MAC addresses of nearby base-stations are known. When people have this feature enabled, the phone will silently upload MAC addresses and lat/long. It also uses cell tower triangulation (this was how the first google maps worked before common phones had GPS in the old blackberry days.)
You'll notice if you ever move (from one house to another) it will take Goog a while to figure out that your home wifi base station has new GPS coordinates.
If you're out in the middle of nowhere, you won't be able to get any kind of lock like this.
But, I'm fairly certain while these roms are not reporting correct NEMA, they are actually getting a real GPS lock.
In other words, software that asks the API "What's my lat/long and accuracy?" will get a valid answer.
Software that asks the API for "exact, raw satellite data, I'll figure it out myself" gets garbage.
It works for me (Italy).
I still have the 2 sats bug but it seems i get a lock in 30 secs.
I even tried with no wifi and no data connection: same result. I got a lock in 30 seconds.
I havent tried a navigation tho.
Hi guys, I'm in the u.k, and as far as I'm aware, the only person in the country with one of these phones!
But,, gps works fine for me.
The phone can see 12 satalites, and have a lock on 9 of them, giving me an accuracy of 16 feet.
Only problem is I don't know what rom I'm on as the chap rooted it for me before I got it sendt over.
I have no bugs in the rom that I've ever noticed, its 4.0.4 but that's all I know, anyone know how I can find out?
I'm guessing its stock ics, and as no other roms seem to be stable or ever finised, there doesn't seem to be any point in flashing anything else, accept maybee the litekernal which is the only stable one I could find.. but since I don't know what rom I'm running, I can't tell if the kernal will work, unless anyone else knows?

GPS locking up

I was just wondering if anybody has been having this issue. After successfully locking onto satellites for GPS for navigation, if I turn off maps when I reach my destination, it requires a reboot until I can use GPS again, it only updates once every few minutes. Haven't done much testing on it since I was on a highway going 80 when I noticed

HERES THE FIX!!
I had this very same issue, and found a resolution for it (can't remember the source now)
After taking both system updates and rebooting, it is necessary to hard reset the device. Upon the initial boot, you must leave all options checked but the following -
Backup and Restore options (you can turn on after the initial setup is finished from options)
there are three location options, one being new to 4.3 and what I believe to cause this - it mentions the ability for location to be grabbed when the screen is off. You must diable this option.
Finish installation, and then you will have properly working GPS.
Here's how I'm quantifying that - before when I was in the exact same boat as those in this thread, I would open GPS test, and I could see 7 or 8 sats in view, but it wouldn't lock. Or if it did, it would work for a short period of time, and then bomb out. I drove around the city for a few hours yesterday using the GPS so we're near and dear now to each other.
After doing all this - you will IMMEDIATELY see 20 sats available upon launching gps test and then almost immediately get full lock and keep it that way.
Was a pain that I had to clear everything, but now GPS is working as I would expect it, and I've not had any issues getting full lock, even in my basement.
Hope this helps!!
I tried to duplicate the problem you describe, but was not able to.
Here is what I did:
- Launch Maps application for the first time.
- Accepted the terms of service and enabled location services access, including Wi-Fi.
- Got location via Wi-Fi, then pinpointed the location via GPS.
- Back to home screen -> Settings -> Apps.
- Maps was not running, but I went into Maps under the all apps view and force closed it.
- Back to home screen.
- Launch the Maps application again and I had an accurate location via GPS in less than 10 seconds.
I repeated this procedure again with the same results. I then disabled Wi-Fi location assistance so that only GPS was available. Repeating the tests twice again and I still see the same results. I have no problems getting a good location lock quickly.
I am running the stock firmware, build JSS15J, and Maps v7.0.1.
I am happy to test again if somebody having this problem can provide specific information regarding their test procedures and results.

I was the source #1, AND #2 although I thought this fixed it, the issue came back! Its like a memory error with the gps driver and or buffer with a overstack flow of data and it either crashes it so you loose gps functions, or locks it up so its searching but never locks. Seems as if its software and android 4.3 or google system service or framework issues. Same problem with older S4 chipsets and jellybean. Google fixed that by updating system files for jelly bean 4.1.2 and 4.2.x. Also the new maps could be the culprit as well since it was updated to a completely new version.

Yes you were, I remember your username now. Thanks skyhawk21! You resolved this for me. I used my N7 for a few hours in the car yesterday, and it was spotty and crappy in clear weather for a while, I did a reset in the car like you mentioned, and everything now has been working solidly since. Thanks again.
The last part is sad to hear. I however have used it for several hours straight with no issues, so I'm hoping it stays strong.
I am confused, so should I reset mm y tablet? Will that actually fix GPS?

It will fix it for awhile but the issues creeps back up.... good luck this new nexus 7 is turning to be into a nightmare, flaky gps and flaky touch screen issues on two fo them now!
As long as you only use google maps it seems to work ok.
Once you start using other GPS apps (GPS Test, Gas Buddy, Google Earth) the problem shows up eventually.
It might have to do with multiple apps accessing GPS, but that is just a guess.
I wouldn't bother factory resetting (for the N7 2013 GPS issue). Reboot has always allowed the unit to get locks again (for me) It feels like an OS or driver problem.
I found a posting on AndroidCentral about the same issue. According to one of the posters, the issue is known by Google and an OTA should be pushed out soon for it. I just hope its true because I'm pretty dependant on my N7 for finding my way around town

LG G2 GPS issue, observations and possible fix!

Hello everybody and glad to be part of this community.
First please excuse my English.
I recently bought an LG G2 LS980 ZVD kitkat 4.4.2 and notice that my GPS doesn't work, I tried every possible solution found in internet (not with flashing the device, because I'm like 2 days old in android ) even a peace of paper under the antenna.
I found a way to get my GPS work and get a lock in seconds but for the first start of the phone after a factory reset, if I restart the phone the GPS problem appear again.
So this what I did after baying the phone:
root the phone with iroot.
trying several solutions in internet(no luck).
factory reset.
set new configuration of the phone (language, name, email...).
let the update of google services inc complete.
let google hangout update.
disable GPS and enable it again(the phone ask me to accept the terms -->ok... here he ask me again that the localization services was disabled in a previous version of android, do you want to enable it-->ok...).
click on google maps (wifi is enable).
get a lock (fix) in seconds .
GPS test app: about 21 sat in view, about 12 sat in use :victory: .
For a month I thought that I fixed the problem until I restart my phone the problem return again. But I did the fallowing observation:
enable plane mode --> no GPS signal.
disable plane mode --> GPS test app and androits GPS app: getting about 8 sat in use, about 50 feet accuracy then signal freeze.
I reset my phone again, GPS work only for the first start again.
Any idea what does the phone do in the 2nd start after factory reset!!!
Thank you all.

If you want to rule out a software issue, use LG Flash tool and image your phone with a .tot file.
Here's a thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702422
Get the ZVE version and flash it. This will wipe your ENTIRE phone of course.
If that doesn't fix it, it's a hardware issue.
Oh, and welcome to the community
If you're nervous about this method. Watch a Youtube video to good idea. Then follow the guide exactly, you'll be ok.

Thank you for your reply.
Sorry but I don't think that is a hardware issue, because I tested it within a month without restart, a week, and now a day... the 2nd restart will make the GPS problem if I'm correct...
For the ZVE .tot I will see how to proceed with flashing... thank you again, but before that can anyone confirm the GPS issue FIX in the ZVE version.
Thank you.

For the ZVE .tot I will see how to proceed with flashing... thank you again, but before that can anyone confirm the GPS issue FIX in the ZVE version.
Thank you.

Well, the G2 doesn't have a great GPS. It wasn't an "issue" per se, but it is a problem that some have and others don't GPS works great for me on ZVE and ZVG (Lollipop). ZVE is the latest Kitkat release and has proven to be solid and stable with good GPS. But like I said... the G2 GPS is flaky compared to other phones, I hope it sorts itself out with a complete refresh. That's what I would do.
Once you're up and running, turn on location and download GPS Status and toolbox. It has an option to download A-GPS data making your locks faster. Then watch as it picks up satellites (hopefully).

Roger that,
For me GPS Status and toolbox doesn't solve my problem (except if I'm connected to internet, the location is using A-GPS and doesn't show any sat). I think the problem is in using A-GPS beside GPS it self, if I'm not connected to internet the phone kinda refuse using GPS captors and wait for A-GPS... if I turn plane mode on then off the GPS reception start then stop and GPS Status and toolbox show many sat and stop too. I know this is weird but i was wandering is there a way to force not using A-GPS at all and see what happened. I think it's a solution for Chinese phone with MKT chipset maybe it's the same for LG. Sorry I'm not an expert so maybe I'm saying nonsense.

Yeah I don't think GPS status will solve your problem, that's why I suggested a full refresh. I never tried to force just GPS, but I would think disabling mobile data and wifi would do it, since it uses towers (and pull your sim).
I just picked up a refurb Sprint LG G2 LS980 from Freedompop. It came with 5.02 Lollipop installed. I have been trying to get the GPS to work reliably but it;s been a struggle. I find that I can only get it to work some of the time when my 3g radio is on. Doesn;t work for me on 4G/LTE or Airplane mode. When it does work, it works well enough. The GPS status app usually says I have anywhere from 8-22 satellites available but never connects.
Another odd condition, when the 3g radio is on, it never switches to 4g even when the GPS is not running. takes a reboot to fix it.
Anybody else have GPS issues like this and have any fixes? Not being able to use the 4G is not such a deal breaker for me since I usually uses offline GPS apps like CoPilot or Maprika. But I'd like this to be atleast somewhat functional or else I am going to have to return the phone. just weird that the GPS would be tied to the 3g Radio in anyway.
