[Q][GPS]Hey guys/gals need some help.[SOLVED] - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

The problem: GPS Can't find location. (Samsung Galaxy S II TMobile)
A friend of mine have SGSII from TMo and the GPS and any app that uses location can't find the location, the phone is stock gingerbread no root nothing. We already uninstall Maps updates and re installed it, Cache and data was cleared too, we force stop the app do several reboots, WiFi is enabled and GPS enabled all settings on Menu>Settings>Location Services are enabled. What could be happening? There is any code to reset GPS or VRAM on the TMo variant?
Edit: We Also Factory Reset the device nothing yet... frustrating...

well get off wifi because using wifi allows you to be pinpointed with the wifi not the GPS.
then go stand outside for like 5 mins with the gps on. If that doesn't work. Download Fasterfix, choose location and click GO or whatever. Then go stand outside for quicker lockon.

Data "stalling"

I don't really know to describe this problem better. I'm running CM10 (lately AOKP's latest build) with default kernels. I've flashed all the radios and tried a bunch of them in solid LTE coverage, I seem to have the same problem every time, which is the data seems to "stall."
It will show full signal, and then if i click a link, it will sort of just sit there, not really doing anything. Eventually it may load, or i give up in patience. Any one have any ideas?

I am using at&t stock rom and not yet rooted. Even I have the same problem. Tried to disable and enable data from the notification but did not help. But, when I turn on the wifi, and turn off the wifi again, it works fine. When wifi is turned on phone disables the data and try's to connect to wifi or shows the available networks, but I don't connect and I turn off the wifi, phone reconnects to the at&t data again and then it works fine. Not sure why.

May be a good time to contact your cell phone provider for a replacement.
I was on a cross country road trip running CM9 on my GS3 and I kept running into the same thing. A temporary fix was to reboot the phone. Since I got back, I flashed SlimBean and I haven't seen the issue again.
In my case, I think its the SIM card. I used Google Maps/Navagation on my HTC G2 (using a micro SIM adapter) and my phone got HOT, I mean burn your fingers hot (upwards of 57 degC to 60 degC).
If it happens again I'm going to bring my SIM card back to ATT and have them replace it. I did some googleing and it seems like this is common with the Verizon variants of the GS3.

That's the next step... it means reflashing, and waiting for samsung to fix it though, which sucks a lot.
ive had this same problem and it would piss me off! i found out that busybox was the culprit. i uninstalled busybox and cleard my cache in recovery and all was well once again. if any of yall have busybox installed you may look into my solution.
I recently been having this issue also. But mine is a little bit different. Like my phone will say I am connected to "H" for data but when I load a Page it slightly lags switches to H+ and boom Internet works. When I stall for more then 5 minutes it switches back. I'm not sure if it's some battery conserving feature or what but I have no problem against at.

Offline GPS.. completely reliant on cellular or could I not hit the satellites in JA?

I went to Jamaica last week and downloaded an offline cache of most of the island for Google Maps. I figured if the cell phone has GPS I could use it.. I guess I didn't realize how dependent the GPS was on cell signal because it never found a location. I still had airplane mode enabled because I was paranoid about incurring accidental roaming charges, but I just tried it here and it doesn't work with airplane mode enabled either.. makes sense I guess. I disabled airplane mode while I was there and it still didn't work. I had the Google Maps cached data so I just navigated by looking at street signs. Just thought the GPS should work. Did I assume incorrectly or maybe do something wrong?

When I was in a Jet of all places I opened up GPS Speedometer to see how fast the Jet was going at 30,000 feet. I never got a signal but as soon as we got closer to ground and picked up AT&T for a few seconds at a time the gps started to work. So to test it again before I took off the second time, I opened up GPS Speedometer and had it lock onto my location. After take off and at 50,000 feet it was accurate the entire way. So my guess is it has to have a data connection temporarily or something.
i tried this when i was in a similar situation with BRUTE google maps (same style of downloaded cache of maps) and it was very inconsistent and buggy. in the end, i downloaded a gps app (copilot) and it worked perfectly the entire time with my phone in airplane mode.
hope that helps

This is the best solution. CoPilot is the best navigation app and doens't rely at all on cellular networks or Data
Perfect! I should have done more research before leaving
Just got back from Mexico and had a similar experience. I precached my location assuming I can use navigate offline over there, I was mistaken. First, I turned off data cause roaming data costs an arm/leg so I had no data, just voice roaming. With my GPS on, I literally had to stick my phone out the window so it could lock on some satellites. When it finally did, I was able to see my location on gmaps. When I tried to navigate, that's when the app complained about needing data. All I could do was just see where I was, unable to navigate. I think I'll have to find another solution for offline navigation.

[Q] GPS not working. I tried EVERYTHING!!!

Hello! I know this is a common thread, but i'm desperate!
My GPS is not locking at all, i left the phone for 10 to 20 minutes and i got nothing...
I'm using the CM10.1 MoDaCo ROM, but i tried so many ROMS, fixed configuration files, walkthroughs, etc, but none of them seem to work.
I'll list all the methods that i try so far.
1) Flash a fixed configuration file
2) Change the ROM: i tried with the stock 4.2.2, CM10, CM10.1 Nightlies, CM10.1 Experimental, MoDaCo CM10.1
3) Flash different radios. I live in Chile, so i tried UGLL1 and UGKL1
4) Clear data of Google Services Framework, restart, etc
5) Used FasterGPS to set my location in the right area
6) Used GPS Status to improve AGPS
7) Change the build.prop file
I tried every method and the combination of them, but nothing has worked for me so far....
The GPS is very important for me because i use it to track my rides with Strava, and since the GPS is not working, i cannot start the application...
I really need help...
I use a Galaxy Nexus Maguro without Wallet and live in Chile. I cannot tell exactly when the GPS started to fail, but at least in the stock 4.1.2 it was working perfect, so i guess it started failing when i updated to CM10 and then to CM10.1.....
Ok try this if you haven't.
In settings turn off all location. Reboot
Make sure location reporting is still off.
Clear data on Maps force stop maps
Reboot
Clear data on maps and force stop again
Enable location
Get gps lock with maps or easy gps.
Might not work but I have had your same problem and this fixed it .... good luck

Hi!
Thanks for your answer, but unfortunately i've already tried this method with no succeed. I tried again but it didn't work...
Thanks anyway, i'm going to try to roll back to stock 4.1 (because the GPS was working with that version)
and if it really works i'm going to upgrade to 4.2 to see if i can find the error...
If someone else can give me a solution i'll appreciate it!

I already tried, but with Android 4.2.2 and it didn't work.
Before i flashed the 4.2.2 i was using stock 4.1 without problems, so i believe, and hope, that this is a software issue in the 4.2.2 update...
I'm going to try it now and i let you know.

My GPS got worse after upgrading to 4.2.2. Lock takes much longer and finds less satellites

Well, i returned to Stock Android 4.1.2 using Fastboot, but the GPS didn't work either... So i updated via OTA to 4.2.2 and the GPS didn't worked again...
But i noticed that the Nexus S belonging to my sister, wich uses CyanogenMod 10, is not working either!
So i have a doubt now: Is it possible that CyanogenMod could have ruined our GPSs? If i erased everything via fastboot, is it possible that some remains of CyanogenMod could still be breaking my GPS? Or are our GPSs, strangely, broken at the same time?!
Please Help!!!

If you've flashed the Google factory image, you have an active sim card with data connection, and gps does not work, then you have a hardware problem.

Out of my realm of expertise, but I imagine the sirf chipset is not user serviceable. Your best bet would be Samsung factory service. I'm sorry.
Well, after giving up on trying to solve my GPS problem, it fixed itself.... i know that sounds weird, but the only thing that i did was update the CM10.1 to the latest RC2 and the problem was fixed, at least partially. Now it can find some satellites and it takes like 100 seconds.
The Gnex GPS isn't the best one, so it behaves a little weird some times, but at least is fixed now...
I really don't know what could be the problem, because i tried with almost any Rom, officials and no-officials...
Finally, the CM10.1 RC2 fixed my problem, hope this could help someone else.
Enable wifi & mobile network location in settings
Should be some code in 4.2.2 that prevents you from getting AGPS data if you disable the said option.

The problem is fixed now, but i tried everything, from rolling back to 4.1 official to 4.2.2 official, CM9, CM10, CM10.1, AOKP, etc. So i really don't know what could be the problem. I also tried the solution that you told me, but that didn't work either.
Right now, with CM10.1 RC2 my GPS is working great and i'm able to use Strava again.
I've been having the same issue. I'm running a Stock Verizon Galaxy Nexus, on my third one now. I have tried everything from apps, to resets, to disconnecting the gps, and nothing seems to work. It just seems to take forever to get a GPS lock, sometimes I just have to reset it. Not sure the issue, and I can't seem to find anyone with answers either. IDK if anyone found anything??

Cold start gps can take up to 20 minutes outdoors with a clear view of the sky if you don't have current agps data. Thereafter, you should have quick starts for a day or two.
Is your data working properly? Do you have sync settings turned off?

My data is working just fine, I actually have great 4g where I'm at, and all my sync is turned on. I've never had GPS problems with any of my other phones. I had an EVO 3D, and it worked great, cold starts would take seconds to find GPS.

And you have certified that all the gps settings/permissions are turned on? Even in the Google settings app?
Since you are stock, it might be helpful for diagnosis to preform a factory reset.
Edit - I see on another thread that you have already performed a factory reset. Next step would be to flash the factory image and see if that helps.

Thanks, I'll have to look up and see how to do that without root and boot loader unlocked, this is my third Galaxy Nexus from Verizon, they keep replacing it and I keep having the same issue
And yes all setting have been turned on, kind of driving me nuts
I'm sorry for you. it must be very frustrating.
As far as flashing an official factory image, I think you can do it unlocked if you have adb set up. Or use a toolkit, unlock, flash factory, relock (or not, why not keep it unlocked?)

[Q] is your gps working with the wifi location disabled?

For some reason and before I system update the tablet once more... Is your GPS working at all? so far I cannot lock to any satellites with GPS hardware enabled and google access turned on?! I do have the wifi location disabled do I need that enabled to make the built in GPS work?
I havent rebooted yet after initial boot and first system update and have the icon in top left corner saying there is another 55.1mb update...
everyone elses gps working without wifi location enabled?
i think enabling wifi allows gps to get a more accurate single by pinging the access points but it should still work with wifi disabled.

Powered off tablet and back on, finally got a gps icon searching, didnt find satellites at my desk where my galaxy s3 and sero 7 pro tablet get 9-17 locks..
Went by window and got 3 satellites not locked. quit gps status tried gps test and the gps icon is gone again and gps wont come on although its enabled. What gives? defective nexus 7? anyone else with same or similar issues?
No issues, using gps test, it locked on within 15 seconds or so, 12 of 17 sats. indoors.
Got it working finally, took awhile... Had to follow the directions here:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/maps/q24Cq4sQAtc
did not update maps from the stock one installed already.. went by window waiting 2 minutes and it finally downloaded AGPS data and finally saw 19 sats and locked on to 6-10 of them.. Now when I test with GPSTEST and GPS STATUS and MAPS everything is working like it should and it finds my location in about 15 seconds or so and its dead on 3-5 meters in MAPS and pointing correct direction for magnetometer sensor inside..
So if anyone else has issues try the instructions above!

Try this
Knock on Wood, I think I got the gps problems nipped in the butt!
I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!

WiFi allows a quick load of the agps almanac data. Without it, it may take several minutes with a clear sky view to get a complete load of the satellite almanac once loaded, it should be good for a rapid fix for several days. If used often enough, it will keep the almanac current and always get a fix within seconds..

LG G2 GPS issue, observations and possible fix!

Hello everybody and glad to be part of this community.
First please excuse my English.
I recently bought an LG G2 LS980 ZVD kitkat 4.4.2 and notice that my GPS doesn't work, I tried every possible solution found in internet (not with flashing the device, because I'm like 2 days old in android ) even a peace of paper under the antenna.
I found a way to get my GPS work and get a lock in seconds but for the first start of the phone after a factory reset, if I restart the phone the GPS problem appear again.
So this what I did after baying the phone:
root the phone with iroot.
trying several solutions in internet(no luck).
factory reset.
set new configuration of the phone (language, name, email...).
let the update of google services inc complete.
let google hangout update.
disable GPS and enable it again(the phone ask me to accept the terms -->ok... here he ask me again that the localization services was disabled in a previous version of android, do you want to enable it-->ok...).
click on google maps (wifi is enable).
get a lock (fix) in seconds .
GPS test app: about 21 sat in view, about 12 sat in use :victory: .
For a month I thought that I fixed the problem until I restart my phone the problem return again. But I did the fallowing observation:
enable plane mode --> no GPS signal.
disable plane mode --> GPS test app and androits GPS app: getting about 8 sat in use, about 50 feet accuracy then signal freeze.
I reset my phone again, GPS work only for the first start again.
Any idea what does the phone do in the 2nd start after factory reset!!!
Thank you all.

If you want to rule out a software issue, use LG Flash tool and image your phone with a .tot file.
Here's a thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702422
Get the ZVE version and flash it. This will wipe your ENTIRE phone of course.
If that doesn't fix it, it's a hardware issue.
Oh, and welcome to the community
If you're nervous about this method. Watch a Youtube video to good idea. Then follow the guide exactly, you'll be ok.

Sorry but I don't think that is a hardware issue, because I tested it within a month without restart, a week, and now a day... the 2nd restart will make the GPS problem if I'm correct...
For the ZVE .tot I will see how to proceed with flashing... thank you again, but before that can anyone confirm the GPS issue FIX in the ZVE version.
Thank you.

Well, the G2 doesn't have a great GPS. It wasn't an "issue" per se, but it is a problem that some have and others don't GPS works great for me on ZVE and ZVG (Lollipop). ZVE is the latest Kitkat release and has proven to be solid and stable with good GPS. But like I said... the G2 GPS is flaky compared to other phones, I hope it sorts itself out with a complete refresh. That's what I would do.
Once you're up and running, turn on location and download GPS Status and toolbox. It has an option to download A-GPS data making your locks faster. Then watch as it picks up satellites (hopefully).

Roger that,
For me GPS Status and toolbox doesn't solve my problem (except if I'm connected to internet, the location is using A-GPS and doesn't show any sat). I think the problem is in using A-GPS beside GPS it self, if I'm not connected to internet the phone kinda refuse using GPS captors and wait for A-GPS... if I turn plane mode on then off the GPS reception start then stop and GPS Status and toolbox show many sat and stop too. I know this is weird but i was wandering is there a way to force not using A-GPS at all and see what happened. I think it's a solution for Chinese phone with MKT chipset maybe it's the same for LG. Sorry I'm not an expert so maybe I'm saying nonsense.

Yeah I don't think GPS status will solve your problem, that's why I suggested a full refresh. I never tried to force just GPS, but I would think disabling mobile data and wifi would do it, since it uses towers (and pull your sim).
I just picked up a refurb Sprint LG G2 LS980 from Freedompop. It came with 5.02 Lollipop installed. I have been trying to get the GPS to work reliably but it;s been a struggle. I find that I can only get it to work some of the time when my 3g radio is on. Doesn;t work for me on 4G/LTE or Airplane mode. When it does work, it works well enough. The GPS status app usually says I have anywhere from 8-22 satellites available but never connects.
Another odd condition, when the 3g radio is on, it never switches to 4g even when the GPS is not running. takes a reboot to fix it.
Anybody else have GPS issues like this and have any fixes? Not being able to use the 4G is not such a deal breaker for me since I usually uses offline GPS apps like CoPilot or Maprika. But I'd like this to be atleast somewhat functional or else I am going to have to return the phone. just weird that the GPS would be tied to the 3g Radio in anyway.
