My S3 took one of those unfortunate, unexpected dips in a porcelain pool. It was buzzing and crackling before I could get the battery out. Let it dry out and everything was working except for the external speaker. No ringtones, speakerphone, music, etc. So I ordered a replacement for the external speaker module, dissected my phone and cleaned the couple spots that showed traces of water, and put it back together... and the speaker still doesn't work. So assuming there is nothing wrong with the replacement, there is probably nothing wrong with the original... and now I have no clue what to do.
I'm not generally real adventurous with my phone. It's not modded; still running the original OS that came on it from Sprint, but it's not under any kind of warranty or service agreement (and the indicator is now purple anyway.)
The internal speaker works and it vibrates. Microphone and camera are okay. Any suggestions? Please?? "I didn't answer my phone because I didn't hear it ring" is already getting to cause me problems.
There's a good chance that when your device took a swim something else may have been damaged. Did you make sure to check that all the connections were carefully placed, before connecting the new speaker ? Also you said that there were signs of water still in the device when you opened it. How did you dry the device ? Did you use Rice ? Or descant ? Most times just air drying the device does not do the job.

I did just air dry it. When I opened it up there was no actual water remaining, but there was a white residue around what I am guessing is the internal speaker. I used rubbing alcohol on that to remove it. All the ribbon cables are securely in place and while I'm not adept at circuit boards I don't see anything on the motherboard that would appear to be loose or damaged. I can put it in rice if you think it would make any difference at this point.
Yes. I would still suggest putting it in rice for a few days. Even at this point. Electronics and water don't mix well. Especially smartphones. I've seen devices still have some moisture trapped in them, even after three days of Air Drying. Although the rice may not solve the issue. It's worth a try. If that doesn't resolve anything. ODIN the Stock Tar. If that still doesn't resolve the issue, well then it's time to take it in, and have a repair center look at it.

Besides losing the two screws visible on the left and right top edges of the phone, another problem cropped up.
On a recent 6 hour ride, the main connector suddenly became intermittent. I have always hated that connector and I believe it's one of the weaker points on an otherwise less than quality device -but I digress.
I know how quickly the battery will empty using BT and the backlight all the time so I tried to jiggle the cable to get it to work while I was driving. It was not possible, and to add insult to injury, the intermittent connection kept interrupting the MP3s playing and would sometimes cause the SD card to crash, requiring a hard reset. Ugh.
In the hotel I was able to rig the connector so that the device would charge and the next day while at work I figured the device was toast anyway so I took a look inside.
4 screws out from under the battery compartment, and another three screws to get the mainboard loose enough so I could see the connection.
I found the connector so loose that with the slightest touch it fell out in my hands.
Apparently, all of the solder joints had been loosened by the rainwater.
I think this should be a caveat here for all devices left in the rain. I understand that rain water or distilled water is very "agressive". You may be able to get your device to work again. For a while.
I don't think toilet water or moisture from tap water is as bad.
- but again I digress.
Before I went any further, I went out and got an O² XDA-III. HAving safely restored my ability to communicate, I proceeded with the fiddeling.
I was actually able to get the connector resoldered onto the board using a 25+ (pre SMD) year old soldering iron. I actually don't believe it myself but it still works.
I was also able to correct an annoying rattle the phone had almost since I bought it.
The telephone antenna is a raised plastic piece on the back of the board. That raised piece forms a box in which one of the screws for the board onto the frame was "stored". Don't know how it got there but I guess the production people at HTC should listen up.

My friend dropped her phone into a glass of water. Stupid her just had it off over night with battery removed, but next day decided to just pop battery in and start using it. Calls me later(spare phone) and tells me details.
I go get it disassemble, rubbing alcohol, the works. Let dry for 48 hours. Everything on the phone works other than it wont charge the battery. She has 2 batteries one which is new. Besides getting an external charger for it, is there anything else I could do to fix it? Is there a part I can replace, or something software related that might fix it?

I suspect (hope) only the battery was damaged from your friend's phone. Have her go to TMO and see if they will let her test charge a display Slide battery in her phone. If it starts charging and increases by a few percentage points then perhaps only the battery was damaged. Hope the situation gets worked out.
Just dropped mine in a full sink two weeks ago ... mine hit the edge and knocked the battery out milliseconds before the device hit the water (miracle). Fully submerged. Dried it over a weak heater vent for 2 days. Works just like new. I figured the phone was ok as I snatched it out of the water very quickly. My main concern was the battery ... I thought I might have damaged it. So far everything is just fine.
We have tested it with a new battery. Phone works perfectly fine just wont charge the battery, every feature works. Can even connect to computer with usb.
What im trying to figure out is if there is something I can do i.e. fix it somehow cheaply
Your best bet is probably just using an external charger. I'm using a friends old phone that had a full glass of lemonade spill on it and sit for 5 hours in liquid, turned on. When he woke up the battery was sparking, contact was melted. The battery was partially fried from the short circuit, so I just bought a new battery. The only thing that doesn't work in the phone is the camera. The real downside to that is if any app tries to access the camera the phone completely locks up, takes about 10 seconds just to get out of the black screen.
I'm digressing, anyway, yeah, external charger is probably the best bet, if she has two batteries that should work just fine. Use one while the other is charging.

ultrasonic cleaning
if you disassemble to the charging circuit board or motherboard and try placing it into an alcohol solution in a u/s cleaner (also used for jewelry), this might clean the contacts and allow charging, might not do anything or damage the board. no guarantees on this method , but will sometimes work.
ps. remember that some circuit board cleaner solutions will dissolve plastic, recommend alcohol.

The best solution I have found for a wet phone, or any device for that matter, is to take the device apart as much as possible. Then put it in a ziploc bag of rice. Seal it up good so air doesn't get in. The rice will suck all the water out. I have done this with my old G1 (twice) as well as other phones.

I've bought my 10 in August and it fell into water which caused SIM card to malfunctionction and addition to that I heard something inside the phone itself (holding it firmly and shaking it, sounded like something it's not fixed inside).
I had thought it was caused by water and high temperature while drying it.
Anyhow I used warranty and today, after a 40 days got a brand new one (thank God I know, seems like they didn't detect water) but I still hear something moving inside.
Anyone else?

Most likely OIS from the camera. Completely normal for phones with OIS
Yes, the sound comes from the OIS components to compensating the movements through the axes.
So that's it... I suspected it's nothing harmful, anyway doesn't hurt to ask

The same thing has happened to me but now phone keeps on booting into download mode and shuts down and I cannot control it. Its been looping since last night when I dropped it and stops when the battery runs out. Also I have condensation on my back camera which was removed when I left it in a bag of dry rice throughout the day but it has come back maybe due to the phone heating up while I've been fiddling with it.
Also when you replaced the phone you did not tell that it got any water damage is that correct?
Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? Do you think i am able to get a replacement if I hand it in to the provider?

I recently dropped my phone in water. Put the phone in uncooked rice for 2 days, removed sim tray, put it under direct sunlight., tried everything I could possible to dry it. After 4 days, powered on the device, it turned on fine and most of the things working as normal. I did a hardware test with *#808# and most of the tests are passed.
But Speaker, Mic (also the headphone jack) and Vibration isn't working any more. I also noticed that it is charging fine but discharging very fast, even the battery stats shows 100 to 70% as a vertical line. So, I guess battery needs to be replaced. Other than that, on normal use it is heating up.
I did some google search and few forums says, the speaker and vibration connector goes under battery and connect to the top of motherboard. Considering battery is screwed up. I guess the connector is removed or damaged may be.
Has anyone faced the same problem before or anyone can advice something?

You can't dry a phone completely without opening it. So if you are upto it, open it up (provided you are out of warranty) and disconnect all the connectors and clean them with alcohol or other suitable liquid, leave it to dry and then reassemble.
It's hard to guess exactly what happened inside, but it seems there are two possibilities:
- it could be that your top (main) board is damaged, which causes malfunction of connected bottom board OR
- you may have damaged both parts of the phone...
Either case, repairs won't be cheap, motherboard is the most expensive part of the phone.
I would suggest disassembling the device and inspecting internals. Corrosion should be visible.
Check some teardown videos (recommend Jerry Rig Everything or iFixit) before doing anything if you haven't yet.

Took the phone to OP service centre, the repair guy opened it in-front of me for diagnosis. The phone was in dry condition but there were traces of water deposits. He checked few things and suggested that needs to replace mother board as there was no signal coming to speaker receiver and this will cost ~17k.
For me replacing motherboard for such a huge cost isn't of any worth.
Any suggestion if it can be repaired in someway or shall I start to think about selling/exchanging it online.

I love my phone and am not looking to change it,I was in a meeting with my client and my phone dropped in water while doing so, but I had immediately pulled it out and cleaned and switched it off without any further damage.
Just to let you know that I had a back cover for this also which would have protected it to a good shot, however i am more concerned about the front panel and bottom side of charging port speaker, mic and headphone jack.
I could not open it from back else i would have done that and just put that in the rice bag for about 36 hours or more. then i put it under the morning sunlight for about 20 minutes.
Due to the sun I believe that the back panel now near o the bottom side appears to be pulled out a bit.
I have not swtiched it on yet even once, however, I have again put it back in the rice bag.
Any helps here, what should I do and when do i need to turn it on to see any damages.
I do want to go to service center for experts to get it cleaned it inside. However due to lock down i can't do it.
Can anybody guide me what and how to do from here.
I am really not in a mood to get a new phone. There are a lot of stuff saved on the phone that I even don't even have the backup for.
Please help me with this ASAP!
Definitely something shorted in your phone, unfortunately we can't just guessing which part is shorted, usually some diodes, but it can also be an IC.

Hi arif, I have just tried working on my phone yesterday and seems like it is working fine for now. It's juts that it s lagging a bit.
everything is functional. I guess I'll have to wait until something strange starts to happen.
Hopefully then lockdown is over and we can get it fixed permanently.
