I have searched and there seems to be some different opinions on this.
If I get S-OFF and leave it locked and unrooted can I take the OTA update to Sense 6? Will the OTA mess with just S-OFF?

Ok, so i went ahead and S-OFF'd and unlocked but kept the stock recovery. Can I safley take the OTA (sense 6) update since I have stock recovery without losing my S-OFF and Unlock?
THanks!
This has been said before. OTA will not mess with the section of the phone that has the secure flag or bootloader lock.

Still kind of up in the air as to what's going on. It is locked, without a doubt. I personally believe they will push out an update or a way to unlock it. Like they said they would. I just think they already had it together before it got pushed out.

okay i had a whole bunch of problems with my evo 4g, so i cleaned everything up and restored it back to stock so that i can root and start over again....well in the process i did all the updates required, and i also did the OTA update to 2.3.5 with hboot 2.18, i DID NOT KNOW that we were not supposed to do this until now when i find that i cannot root it..how do i down grade or what do i have to do to root this damn thing now?
Someone show me how to downgrade my 2.3.5 back to froyo using Odin?
Can't downgrade. Only way to semi unlock the bootloader is using HTCdev

Rumrunner won't work with 4.3. You must be on 4.2.2. Shouldn't be long before there's a method for 4.3. Just not yet.

Works for all models. Just got root/S-OFF my VZW One the other day with no problems.
It works, I'm on 4.3 hboot 1.55. Firewater unlocked bootloader and s-off.

S-off worked very well, thanks. Now if I could just undo the damage from trying a custom ROM.

Silly question. Once I use firewater and achieve S-OFF, what next? just install SuperSU from the play store to have root access? Also, do you lose data with Firewater? On 2.10.605.1.
Thanks.
No data loss, but you have to flash cwm or tarp and install superuser from there. At least I think, I'm kinda new at this too.

I believe after you gain S-off you have to install a custom recovery. Then you'll have to flash a ROM with SU in it.
Re-rooted and unlocked bootloader after installing the latest update. Had to reinstall some apps including harmon kardon. Lowered the max/min cpu setting. Froze some bloatware and the phone is running like a champ. Currently at 62% battery life since 7am est. Been on Pandora normal IG & Facebook activity. I have no regrets from purchasing this phone. Cheers...

That is definitely not the case! You absolutely do not need s-off to root your device. All you need to successfully root is the proper files, custom recovery, as well as an unlocked bootloader.

S-off has absolutely nothing to do with root or unlocking, two completely different things. I never said anything about s off (other then saying you don't need it for root). I said unlock your bootloader, flash custom recovery and flash the su zip. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what s off, unlocking and even root is it seems. BTW you can absolutely still s off if you want. It cost 25 bucks.

All you need to do is unlock your bootloader and throw in a custom recovery. You don't need s-off at all. Just go here to unlock your bootloader:
http://www.htcdev.com/
And then flash TWRP and SuperSU and you're good to go.
What they said. ???

There has been an OTA update pushed to VM 816s for about a month or so. I know that normally we cannot apply this to rooted devices because of the tampered flag being set off and not running the stock recovery. Is there any way beyond running RUU and getting to complete stock to apply the update? If not, does anyone know how you can extract update from an updated phone?

Unroot through the SuperSU app and reflash the stock recovery.

I tested this last night, you don't need to re-lock the bootloader. Just unroot, flash stock recovery, and apply the update. No need to lose data.

Hmm.... I updated via OTA and I looked at the version number.
I used the RUU and looked at version number and they were both the same though.
Can I reroot after update
For some reason it's being a pain and not allowing me to install the update. When I flash the recovery and attempt to boot into it to for a system update, all I get is a red triangle with an exclamation point through it
