[Q] FIRE TV Weak WIFI signal - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I was just wondering if someone could help me out with an odd situation ive been having with my FIRE TV. Im beginning to think ive been given a defective unit. I have a 100mbps down rate and the fire tv roughly 5 meters away from my DIR655 router (behind one wall) .
I noticed that majority of the videos i played on my fire tv would constantly stutter or constant buffering so i decided to run a speed test on my device and found that i was getting speeds of roughly 5-7 mbps down only although the FIRETV says im receiving a good signal . While all my other devices in the same location were getting roughly 65 mbps . Ive tinkered with my router finding the most suitable channel switching wireless between wireless b g n and also mixed with no changes to my speed. I even created a wireless bridge between an old router and connected it directly via ethernet. The bridge router was receiving roughly 50 mbps when connected directly to my laptop via ethernet although when i switch it to the FIRETV my rates dropped back to 5-10mbps . The only solution i currently have is running a 100 foot ethernet across my rooms to the FIRETV from my DIR655 main router.
Is there some way i can increase the wifi signal? ive tried resting my router several times but doesnt seem to help. Is my unit most likely defective? Will a 5 ghz router increase the speed?. Im also curious as to what speeds the rest of you are getting im using the speed test net application with a server within my city to test my rate.
Any help would be appreciated thanks guys !

Yesh 5GHZ will increase the speed, but it's reach is not as far. I use 5GHZ. Not sure of the copy speeds to be honest. I use a Netgear DGND3700.

If you did the test on Fire TV with a sideloaded browser using the sideloaded flash plugin, you will get poor results since Android flash kinda sucks because the lazy devs left it in bad shape before quitting on it entirely.
I get bad results most of the time, but when I ran the test on Puffin Browser (sideloaded) which has clouded desktop flash player,it returned with 26MB of my 30MB Charter provider.

Painfully Slow Wifi

So I just realized what I had always suspected: my wifi is terribly slow. I've had my inc for 7 months and I rarely turn wifi on at home because its simply not worth the 10 seconds or so it takes to get started. I just did a speed test on my inc and got .85 mbps. My computer gets 27 with Comcasts speed boost but usually around the 15 mbps that I should be getting. I have a laptop in the other room that gets 17, and my ipod touch gets about 10. But no matter what I do, I get less thatn 1 mbps on my inc. The upload speed is about 2.5, where its about 3.5 on the Ipod, but that's not the issue. Does anyone know of anything I can do with my router settings or inc settings or do I maybe just have a bad wifi chip?
I'm currently running OMFGB btw.
yeah, my wifi is pretty damn slow on mine too. sometimes it'll say its getting 5-6mbps with speedtest, while my computer gets 15-20.

Try checking what channel your wifi is using. If you are in a highly populated area (ex. an apartment complex), your router may be on the same channel as several others which can dramatically slow down your performance. You might have a wireless b/g/n router and your laptop can see the n frequency (5G) while our Inc's can only see the b/g frequency (2G), and in that case, that is why your computer is getting better performance. Most newer computers (and some older) can see this 5G frequency, while most mobile devices can only see the 2G, which is why you're phone's speed is slowing down. Try a different channel that is empty or less crowded. It is quite common for many routers to operate on the same channel and newer routers have a function that automatically will switch to the least populated channel. Hope this helps, it has helped me in the past.

Thanks for the response I think this is my problem! I don't live in an apartment complex so I don't think that is the issue but I do think it is my router as I was just at my girlfriend's and was able to get the 5 mbps hers puts out. Any idea how I may go about changing the b/g/n to just b/g? I don't see an option in the router settings. I have a linksys. I now know I'm sort of in the wrong place but any help would be appreciated!
Edit: Never mind got it! Thanks!

Wifi speeds?

Hey guys,
I have a couple questions about my WiFi on my Nexus 7. The first being, that I always seem to have really slow WiFi connection. For example, I have CenturyLink Internet at home with 12mbps down and 1 mbps up (which I know is on the slower side), but my Nexus 7 has a hard time with buffering hq youtube videos even at full bars. On average, it sits at 52mbs link speed with the router. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
My other question is, my house has a wifi extender upstairs on one side of the house and the modem/wifi router combo downstairs on the other side. The problem is, certain services are limited or blocked through the wifi router for that extender (no torrent/voip for the kids that recklessly hog bandwidth) but I do not want my Nexus 7 to be included in this. In fact, I would prefer to never even have the nexus connect to the extender at all, but the extenders shares the same name/password combo as the wifi router. Is this possible or anyone have any tips? Thanks!

well i can tell you this, that on any device connected to wifi, not including computers, will have a hard time actually reaching the maximum speeds you have available to you. also the n7 has a nice wifi antena but at the same time, no matter what the further you are from it, the slower it will be. if you download speedtest.net, that will give you a more realistic feel for what the speeds you are getting over your wifi are.
as for the extendors, and not having it connect to them, im not sure if that is possible
Ya, I understand that. I am only 15 feet and through 1 wall away from the wifi router though and like I said, I'm usually at full wifi bars.

I've gotten 55Mbit down and 30Mbit up (almost my full speed) on the N7. If you're getting lower speeds, most likely it's your router as the device can clearly handle it

[Q] T310 wifi performance

I've had my t310 for a while and noticed its wifi performance is a lot slower than my other devices.
I'm running a topnotch 2.4/5ghz dualband router with 100mbit fibre optic connection, theres also a laptop connected via ethernet with a massive harddrive for the whole house.
My PCs get roughly 24megabytes/s for file transfers and 13megabytes/s as download speed through fibre (450mbit wireless). My tablet reaches 7mbytes max on both internet and local file transfer. My S4 gets 13+ on both.
Does this tablet use inferior wifi hardware? Both phone and tablet are connected to the 5ghz signal at 150mbits yet my phone reaches almost twice the speed right next to the router.
Ive messed around with tcp buffer tweaks and different congestion controls but noticed no difference. I've also tried original firmware, modified stock and CM.
Does anyone have some performance numbers I can compare to?
I have the sam issue on my sm t-315, its supposed to be a b/g/n card, bytt I cant get wifi speed above 40Mb/s. My Htc one max gets past 100 on the same network.? Is this a known fact? Is there a fix

The tablet network hardware is fine. Is it inferior to your desktop computer, the Wifi is not, but yes, it will never keep up the sustained data rate that your desktop can since your desktop probably has several GB more RAM.
Speed test software depends on a lot of factors not just network speed. You should test more carefully. In fact to test the performance of a device, only test locally on your LAN, not the internet. I get much better numbers than yours on the Tab 3.8 on the LAN hitting a local server. You will also likely get much better overall performance on the 2.4 Ghz channels than 5 Ghz unless you are always next to the router.

Not being rude but I did say that I get the same performance accessing local files on LAN and internet which is roughly 7megabytes/s whereas my phone reaches double that with similar cpu and ram specs. The tablet has plenty of ram, I barely ever get close to using all of it so that is not the issue either. 5ghz is faster for me than 2.4 and yes, I am next to the router.
It's not even down to the write speed of the internal memory sinde that reaches well over 20megabytes/s sustained writing which leads me to the only other thing, which is the wifi controller.
Edit: the only reason I mentioned speedtest results was to rule out the possibility of the source drive being slow on my local network. I tested the speed both using speedtest and downloading an OS image from Microsoft

Well I think not, I test with the same prog on the same server and the same network. It got to be the tab that is faulty configured. My guess is either the radio or the kernel or both.

Internet Speed: Only Getting 4-5 Mbps, What Am I Doing Wrong?

I have a 2nd gen fire tv. When hooked directly to my router via ethernet cable, I am only getting about 4-5 Mbps down (and 1.5—2 Mbps over WiFi).
Meanwhile on my laptop (also directly connected to router) I'm getting about 35 Mbps, and around 20 Mbps on my phone over WiFi.
The numbers above were both in megabits per second, according to Speedtest.net.
My ping was also much higher on the Fire TV (between 200 and 300 ms on the FireTV, around 20ms on my laptop and phone.)
Is there something I'm doing wrong that is throttling my speed on my Fire TV? Or is the Fire TV not capable of faster data speeds?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!
The AFTV2 is limited to a 100mbit port, so 100mbps / 8mbps/MBps = ~12.5 MB/s theoretical max throughput... though still less than your reported outcome.

He most likely meant 4-5mbps which is I think about 700 KB/s

Welp, this is embarrasing.
I saw an archived thread on this forum where someone was having a similar problem with speedtest results on their fire tv. The OP of that thread figured out what the problem was: trying to run the speedtest via the Speedtest.net website slowed their results due to use of web-embedded Flash. I followed the OP’s advice and sideloaded the android Speed Test app, and voila: a nearly constant 36 Mbps down.
So, I basically made a total noob mistake. Anyway, thanks for your assistance everyone! Hopefully others that have the same “problem” I did will see this thread at some point.

Testing WiFi. The "Back-Touch" Issue, and Throughput

I started this thread to see whether this WiFi back touch problem is a universal problem among Oneplus 3 devices. I need feedback from as many people as possible, so please feel free to post your findings.
//EDIT. While we're at it, let's also test throughput in general, as that seems to be a separate issue altogether. Do note that I'm not looking for opinions like "it's good" or "it's bad" but actual results; numbers.//
What is it? Some users have reported that upon touching the upper back of the phone with your bare hands, WiFi speeds are notably reduced. Using a case so you don't touch the back bare handed seems to solve it.
I want to take a scientific approach to this, if I may call it that. This will involve copying files from the phone to a computer over local network, to avoid isp bottlenecks. But first:
1. Make sure you are close to the router, direct line of sight, with full WiFi signal on your phone.
2. Make sure no one else on your local network is bottlenecking your speeds.
3. Get yourself a nice big file on your phone. A single 2GB file or larger sounds good.
4. Get yourself some way to track time.
5. Find a way to copy files over local network. Ftp using ES file Explorer is one method.
The actual test is simple.
1. Copy the file to your computer and record the time it takes to finish the transfer.
2. Divide the size of the file (in MB) by the time (seconds).
3. Repeat this 2 or 3 times while touching the upper back of the phone, and another 2 or 3 times without touching the phone at all.
4. Post your findings, along with your phone model, kernel and rom please.
I made a test pretty close to a router. I created a 2GB file to my server just for this test. (Linux command: fallocate -l 2G wifitest.img)
The copying from ftp server took 67 seconds, no matter how I kept my hands. The speed obviously changes if signal strength drops. Rather than comparing speeds, a signal strength measuring would give more usefull results.
2000MB/67s=29,85MB/s.
My phone is 3003 and rom is rooted OxygenOS 3.24 with default kernel. I would like to see other results as well as I'm wondering what would be the maximum wifi speed for Oneplus 3. (My Galaxy Note 10.1 gets pretty much the same speed results as OP3.) I would like to get a good reason for upgrading my TP-Link Arcer 7 V2.

Thanks for the feedback. You said "no matter how I kept my hands" though... Did you also test speeds without touching the device (during the transfer)?
While looking at signal strength would be enough to determine whether the back-touch issue is real or not, I'd also like to see how bad the effect is. This needs numbers
I'm getting my Oneplus 3 in about a week, and I'll post my results too.

I will be waiting your results. In the meanwhile I will do some more testing. I tested the phone on the table and it was pretty much the same as the last results. Later on I will do some measurements how grip effects signal strength and speed in a next room or something.
I've noticed that file copying over samba is very slow on all android devices. Speeds are about 4-8MB/s. FTP is much faster. I would like to test NFS protocol on Android. I use it in my Linux network and I have read that it is faster than samba on Android as well. It's just difficult to get it working on android as android kernels usually don't have nfs client build in.

I'd be interested in the distance (through wall) test. There are loads of different stories out there. One guy got 2-5 mbps with just a single wall in between. Others got 300 mbps (faster than your transfer speeds!) one floor apart. I am planning to test this too.
That is one useful piece of info right there. I didn't know about the difference in speed from different transfer protocols. Not exactly the point of this thread, but hell, feel free to post it haha.
One more thought. How about testing the back-touch issue and throughput with 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz?

OK, I tested my OP3 about 8 meters away from router. In between was one wall with book shelve and in the other room wardrobe between. 5GHz results:
Phone on the bed: 103s. (2000MB/103s=19,4MB/s)
Phone on fingertips: 107s (2000MB/107s=18,7MB/s)
"Death grip": 240s (2000MB/240s=14,3MB/s)
I will test 2,4GHz next time when I have a moment. I guess it's going to bee around 60mbps. Btw. 300mb/s is 37,5MB/s and it really is significantly faster than my results. Was it over internet or lan?

Speedtest.com as you can see. So it's internet. Pretty darn fast. I am on a relatively sad 5 mbps. Although I am content with that speed.
Got my phone back from RMA today. Apparently they've found a faulty motherboard and replaced it. Can't say the problems are solved however, but I have upgraded my internet from 50mbps to 150mbps. I only reach around 1-10mbps. It's better than previously, but considering that it was repaired and that the speed I receive has tripled, I'm not really happy.
Could it be a problem with the router I connect to? It's a Sitecom X5 N600 (one floor below me) that is connected by cable to a Cisco EPC3925 on the ground floor. Speed when connected to the Sitecom router is pretty much the same as when I connect to the Cisco modem which is twice as far away. Both are quite unstable from what I've seen these past minutes.
My Mi2 seems to struggle as well right now, so I think I'm going to keep researching this issue and contact Sitecom.

It sounds like a router issue, especially if the speeds are similar with two different devices. My OP3 and my old Note 3 and Note 10.1 tablet all have a throughput of around 50-70Mbps in 2,4GHz wifi.
I did some throughput testing, 2,4GHz wifi and downloading 1GB file from my ftp server:
Phone on the table: 164s. (1000MB/164s=6,1MB/s) (1 meter away from the router)
The speed seems to bee the same with antenna death grip as well. I will do more testing father away from the router later on.

Unless OnePlus is silly enough to give a faulty unit to the same person twice, I'd say the issue lies elsewhere. Not just that, if different devices have problems, that is a pretty big tell that it is your router at fault here. Not that I know anything about your router though. But to top it all off, the Cisco router performs better? I don't see how it can be anything BUT your router at this point haha.
Btw, if you go far enough, any router (such as your Cisco) will be unstable. Remember, smartphones are smaller devices, meaning have smaller antennas, than other devices such as laptops. You can expect signal to become worse with distance faster with phones than with laptops.
Could you test your internet speeds now, while standing next to your router? Let's see how much of a difference it makes compared to before RMA. And perhaps check again if you got the back-issue described in the OP?

Here you go:
Phone on top of modem:
43.69 down connected to modem
7.59 down connected to router
Phone on top of router:
42.45 down connected to modem
5.91 down connected to router
Pretty sure it's an issue with the router at this point. Perhaps it's time for another RMA :silly:
I did some testing with CM based Resurrection Remix rom. The test environment was the same. Phone and router were exactly where they were in my last test with OOS 3.2.4.
1 meter away from the router, 5GHz wifi:
Phone on the table: 2000MB/69s=29MB/s
Phone at fingertips: 2000MB/66s=30,3MB/s
(Didn't test the death grip as I was so close to the router)
8m distance between phone and router:
Phone at fingertips: 2000MB/103s=19,4MB/s
On the bed: 2000MB/328s=6,1MB/s (2,4GHz)
I repeated the test multiple times and phone dropped to 2,4GHz every time during the transfer.
