Flashing rom help

So is it possible to flash a rom without an sd card installed from cwm recovery? Thinking of rooting and installing a custom rom to see if it helps with my messaging issues. If so can someone explain his? I would think when I wipe in recovery it would wipe the rom off of my phone correct?

You can't root without an SD card in the first place, atleast I don't think you can do it on the GS3

Sure you can root a Sprint SGS3 without an external SD card. I did it, just used heimdall to flash TWRP (sudo heimdall flash --recovery TWRP.img) and then booted into it to TWRP and flashed TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5
Would be similar on Windows, would just use Odin and its TWRP or CWM image.
No SD card was required, just used adb push to get the file on the phone. Ironically enough to the *cough* /sdcard directory on the phones _internal_ storage ..
Also remember some of the most hackable Rooted, Custom ROM supported devices don't even have external storage --> Nexus7 for Example *Grin*..

Thank you for confirming this. I actually thought about that after posting that.

Well actually I wasn't even talking about rooting. Was going to follow the step by step in the general wiki to root, was actually talking about flashing a rom after I have root and cwm or twrp recovery. Btw what are the difference between the two recoveries?

Too many to list. Most prefer twrp but i would suggest you try both and pick yourself. Easiest root method assuming you use windows is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963812. Once you have root use rom manager to get cwm or goo manager to get twrp. You can flash one recovery from inside the other and all available recoveries can be found here http://goo.im/devs/billard412/Flashable_recovery_US_GS3 in recovery flashable form.

Well can you tell me how to put a file on my phone without a SD card and flash it without it wiping when I do a wipe before I flash? That's what I don't understand. Am I going to be able to flash roms in cwm or twrp without having a SD card. Like can I put then somewhere on my phones internal memory that won't get erased when I do a wipe to install a new rom.

Your internal storage does not get touched by a wipe in cwm/twrp. Only stock recovery will wipe your storage so just load up the file you intend to flash then factory reset and flash.

TWRP Is alot easier to navigate in my opinion, and a lot easier to download..

So my best bet is use your one click root, then install twrp or cwm via the playstire apps. Then I am free to wipe and flash any rom I want. Place it on my internal memory on my phone and flash away. Sorry just had evo and hero and never had to deal with Odin and some of these things. Thanks for your help

Well odins not bad and ya the root method i linked you takes about 30 seconds and once you have root you use the apps to gain recovery and find roms. And as guidence so you dont need to worry about wiping your card on accident heres a picture to reference if need be

And if you're not familiar with odin use the attached version of it to make stuff much easier and keep it handy as Odin will be your best friend when you inevitably have that first soft brick

Easier to navigate? CWM has a touch version too. And easier to download? Each has at least one dedicated app to do it with ease. And while twrp has its perks i think it causes problems and there is still too much stuff out there that needs cwm and wont flash right with twrp. Thats why i told the op to try both and not go just based on opinions

Billiard, to root should I go with your one click root or the one in the general sticky thread? I was planning on using the other one so I could get used to Odin but does either have and advantage? They do the same thing right?

I could be wrong but i believe the one youre referring too is where u flash a recovery in odin. Pull battery then boot to recovery, and flash a root zip in recovery. Ill double check but i mean the end result will be the same but that method tends to be a PIA with a bunch of extra steps. The one i linked you does all of the work for you. I think its as easy as it gets for someone knew to rooting the s3. Chainfire is a beast

Ya I just checked I was right. Not talking down on skunkapes method but thats too many steps i think my method is way easier. And with my custom odin i linked above you dont have to worry about checking boxes and what not i modded my version of odin to have only whats needed.

Reroot MA7 issues

I rooted my N2 a while ago but decided to unroot it for work so I could encrypt and use the company MDM for the week. Well I was able to factory reset the phone after being done with using the MDM, rooted on LCJ and excepted the update with the root keeper or whatever it's called in supersu. Apparently, something went wrong as I've lost root even tho the app is still installed to system. I've tried to reroot it again with the toolkit but it's not working. Whenever I try to install a custom recovery with Odin it looks like it is installing but then it stays as is with the stock recovery and won't install su. Any ideas on where to go from here?

try rooting manually such as i did on jb 4.1.2 use odin 3.04, cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014 and CWM-SuperSU-v0.97 or su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed i forgot which one as i had both on my sd card place (CWM-SuperSU-v0.97 or su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed zip file on the root of external sd for some reason placed on internal cwm didnt see it) flash cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014 with odin select pda and deselect auto reboot be sure phone is in debugging before going into download mode after you successfully flash cwm do a battery pull and boot to recovery it will take longer then usual but its ok then flash the superuser zip you placed on the sd when you exit it should as you if you want to disable stock recovery grant it permission to do so hope it helps you

Use this. It is really simple. Literally takes 30 secs and works for MA7. After you are rooted you can install whatever recovery you want.

for some reason that auto root didnt work for me thats why i had to take the long route

Yeah I think you screwed something up with that root keeper stuff. I would use this to either go back to complete stock MA7 or LJC. Accept the MA7 OTA if you decided on LJC and then try the auto root I linked to earlier. I've rooted about 6 stock MA7 Note II's using it and haven't had one problem.

Update without OTA and Kies

Been searching and I can't figure this out.
I have a rooted S3 and I can't get 4.1.2 OTA.
I also have no access to a PC I can install Kies on.
What is another solution to getting the update on a rooted S3?

Do you have a custom recovery installed? If so, you can just flash a debloated stock 4.1.2 ROM from the development section.

Yeah I have CWM recovery.
This shouldn't mess with settings right? the reason I haven't messed with ROMs on this one is because it's all set up like I like it.
EDIT: NV can't flash with Odin. I have a Chromebook. I need a zip to send over Kies air and flash through CWM

I never recommend dirty flashing (flashing one ROM over another, especially when updating to a newer version of android) it eventually just leads to problems and you'll have to start over again sooner or later.
If you do it the right way, you will have to re-setup the ROM again, pictures, music and files like that will be fine but you'll lose all of your settings.
If you do decide to flash ROMs, before you do, search how to backup your imei, you'll be glad you did if you ever lose it.

It's stock rooted is all, don't want to delete everything just for 4.1.2.
I'll keep searching but it would be easiest to find the update zip file, especially since I won't have access to Odin or anything else to back stuff up and flash in an efficient way

Would sending this zip to the sdcard and apply update through CWM work?

That's the firmware for Odin it looks like. If you want you can just download the OTA from my firmware thread. Flash in CWM and it should work and allow you to preserve root. Probably the easiest way to get what you want. If you can use Odin from another computer, root66 is definitely preferred, but there's more than one way to do it.
I agree about the dirty flashing, for the most part. Since you are simply updating the stock firmware, you should be fine. Clean is better of course, but it's up to you. Without starting clean.you do run the risk of having issues down the road, and then you wouldn't even know why.
If you decide to try the OTA, please take a few min to read what I've got there.

Im still running the Whompasaurs rom. Its such a good rom I haven't ever been able to get away from it. Now that 4.4.2 is getting more TW roms, I had a few questions.
Im getting great performance from my Whomp rom, is the TW 4.4.2 roms any faster, or do they eat up more resources and are generally slower?
The only thing that's making me nervous about just doing it is the upgrade process. It sounds like unrooting to stock and taking the official sprint OTA to 4.4.2 is better for the phone, but I don't want any of that Knox crap on there. Can I just Oden to a custom 4.4.2? It looks like I can, but then I will need to flash the WiFi fix, correct? I see the info out there, but everywhere I have seen some of it mentioned, its kind of scattered throughout a few post or in different threads. I was kind of hoping to get an all in one answer so I didn't have any doubts or questions.
I use to be a heavy flasher, but once I got on Whomp, I haven't really been around much and I am kinda rusty. I don't have another phone to fall back on and want to make sure I'm not going to brick it.

Well you can jump to custom 4.4.2 without upgrading. First you need to backup your internal sdcard because it needs to be wiped for best results. In 4.4.2 the directory structure is changed and without wiping you will end up with two internal sdcard directories (one you wont see but it will take up a bunch of your space). As far as speed things will be just as fast on 4.4.2 unlike the crappy 4.3 we had before.
Needed files
1. Philz 6.07.9 recovery or cwm (twrp will not work)
2. Wifi fix for 4.3/4.4.2
3. Custom 4.4.2 rom
Steps
1. Connect to pc and backup internal sdcard
2. Flash philz (done with odin or in recovery)
3. Boot philz and backup current rom (backup to external sdcard because internal will soon be wiped)
4. Factory reset clean for new rom
5. Under mounts choose format /data and data/media
6. Reboot your recovery (very important) this will make philz create it needed directories (it will ask if you want to root ignore it)
7. After reboot flash your custom rom
8. Boot into download mode
9. Odin wifi fix
Phone will reboot automatically after wifi fix is flashed. Now you setup your rom. I suggest that you do not use a backup app to restore any apps or data. Download everything you can fresh from playstore. Many apps and their data has changed since 4.1.2 and will lead to major issues if restored.
Now one thing about custom 4.4.2 roms. They all have the S5 dialer which has a lag on first call after boot. If you place a call (to voicemail is fine) after every boot you wont have any problems till you reboot.

Thank you for being so clear. Looks like it is what I was expecting but like I said I wanted to be sure. I do know that there is a new philz recovery as of July. I should be okay using that correct? Or is there a reason I need the version you mentioned?

I have 4.4.2 Stock Rooted with Knox removed. I keep downloading your wifi patch, but everytime I try to load it into odin, it says the binary is invalid. any ideas?

You are using pc odin and not mobile odin? Also try odin 1.85 or 3.07. Also you might have a bad download.

I tried 307 and 309. Downloaded on phone the transferred to pc, no good. Tried downloading patch on pc from several different mirrors, no good, tried on laptop on WiFi, no good. They all give the invalid binary error. Tried running Odin in admin and without. I'm on win 8.1 x64. Have the Samsung USB drivers installed. No keis.

Cool. Now enjoy the new NE2 rom out there. FYI you can run any rom (tw 4.1-4.4.2 and aosp 4.1-4.4.4) without any changes. Only thing you should do is wipe your internal sdcard (in philz go to mounts.. format /data /data/media) when you flash a new rom and this will keep you from have some weird issues (also backup your internal data such as pics, vids, etc.. before you format).

How to root Note running 4.4.2

So I haven't been on xda for a while. I've rooted my note a good 12x. I got a replacement and decided to keep it stock as long as possible. Now my phone just pisses me off with touchwiz. I wanna flash a twrp or cwm so i can flash cm11 and so on. I know Samsung just puahed this new update out so idk if anyone has rooted it yet. Does any one know how to root and instal cwm on 4.4.2? Really want to flash a rom. Thank you very much for time and feedback

Can you please confirm that cf worked on 4.4.2? Their site only shows compatibility up to 4.3. I've been searching everywhere, but found no confirmed reports of cf or anything else working on 4.4.2. I want to root my i317 while retaining the stock rom so that I can enable tethering.

Ive used it myself it works just fine

CF method worked on my i317 with Stock 4.4.2. I seen that the compatibility was up to 4.3 but I tried it anyways.

What recovery are you using, and how did you install it, TWRP bricked mine.

C auto root is flashed with odin in download mode. While rooting, it installs a custom recovery.

maybe it's kitkat, but it didn't install one for me. When I went into recovery, it was the normal factory recovery, which allowed nothing. I tried with Rom Manager, but nothing.

CF worked
I had to manually install the latest Supersu apk then update the binaries to get it working afterword, but I'm finally rooted
Now to get tether working

Download a recovery like philz and flash it in odin while the phone is in download mode

Let me ask you this:
1. root with odin.
2. install CWM with odin?
3. Not I have 4.4.2 stock rom with root.
4. Can I install a custom rom with 4.4.2. stock rom still on the phone?

Yes, if 1 - 3 is accomplished, you are ready for experiments in custom roms. You use the recovery to flash.
But make sure you have the latest recovery, and that you check the rom instructions a few times before you do anything.

Ok....cwm from Rom manager, or twrp through odin? I don't mean to break chops, I've rooted a captivate and played with it for a year, when my wtty was over with this phone, I rooted it, and had JediX 19 on it. I went back to stock, and then 4.4.2 When samsung stock 4.4.2 was installed, for some reason, it keeps bricking on me.

Ok, I rooted, and installed twrp from odin,.... passed. When I go into recovery, it's not there.

Ok. Hopefully someone has an answer. I rooted with CF auto root, Odin....fine. Installed CWM, fine. Downloaded SuperSU.....unfortunately superuser stopped working everytime I press on it. I cannot uninstall it, because it DOES NOT show up in application manager. I installed root checker, and says phone is not rooted. I can get into clockwork MOD, but no zip files show up. Can I use Odin to re flash CF auto root?, or just quit, I would hate to brick this again.

Sounds like Knox is blocking you. After rooting, install the latest Supersu apk (2.02) and install manually. Then when you open it, it should ask to update binaries. Let it, then it should ask about dialing Knox. Click yes. Viola, you're fully rooted. After the above is done, you can play with ROMs n such.
Up till that point, there is no need to flash anything, as auto root is designed to do the work for you from a pure stock rom.

Thank you sir! I went into ES file explorer, and manually installed SuperSU. Although it never asked about dialing KNOX. I installed Root Checker, and it says I'm rooted. Appreciate yours and everyone else's help. Have a great day.
