So is it possible to flash a rom without an sd card installed from cwm recovery? Thinking of rooting and installing a custom rom to see if it helps with my messaging issues. If so can someone explain his? I would think when I wipe in recovery it would wipe the rom off of my phone correct?
Thanks in advance

You can't root without an SD card in the first place, atleast I don't think you can do it on the GS3
Root and ROM Help. Yes Root/ROM is doable without external microSD Storage

Sure you can root a Sprint SGS3 without an external SD card. I did it, just used heimdall to flash TWRP (sudo heimdall flash --recovery TWRP.img) and then booted into it to TWRP and flashed TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5
Would be similar on Windows, would just use Odin and its TWRP or CWM image.
No SD card was required, just used adb push to get the file on the phone. Ironically enough to the *cough* /sdcard directory on the phones _internal_ storage ..
Also remember some of the most hackable Rooted, Custom ROM supported devices don't even have external storage --> Nexus7 for Example *Grin*..
Have flashing fun ! :victory:

Thank you for confirming this. I actually thought about that after posting that.
Well actually I wasn't even talking about rooting. Was going to follow the step by step in the general wiki to root, was actually talking about flashing a rom after I have root and cwm or twrp recovery. Btw what are the difference between the two recoveries?

Too many to list. Most prefer twrp but i would suggest you try both and pick yourself. Easiest root method assuming you use windows is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963812. Once you have root use rom manager to get cwm or goo manager to get twrp. You can flash one recovery from inside the other and all available recoveries can be found here http://goo.im/devs/billard412/Flashable_recovery_US_GS3 in recovery flashable form.
Or here for flashing in odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900492
Well can you tell me how to put a file on my phone without a SD card and flash it without it wiping when I do a wipe before I flash? That's what I don't understand. Am I going to be able to flash roms in cwm or twrp without having a SD card. Like can I put then somewhere on my phones internal memory that won't get erased when I do a wipe to install a new rom.

Your internal storage does not get touched by a wipe in cwm/twrp. Only stock recovery will wipe your storage so just load up the file you intend to flash then factory reset and flash.
TWRP Is alot easier to navigate in my opinion, and a lot easier to download..
So my best bet is use your one click root, then install twrp or cwm via the playstire apps. Then I am free to wipe and flash any rom I want. Place it on my internal memory on my phone and flash away. Sorry just had evo and hero and never had to deal with Odin and some of these things. Thanks for your help

Well odins not bad and ya the root method i linked you takes about 30 seconds and once you have root you use the apps to gain recovery and find roms. And as guidence so you dont need to worry about wiping your card on accident heres a picture to reference if need be
And if you're not familiar with odin use the attached version of it to make stuff much easier and keep it handy as Odin will be your best friend when you inevitably have that first soft brick

Easier to navigate? CWM has a touch version too. And easier to download? Each has at least one dedicated app to do it with ease. And while twrp has its perks i think it causes problems and there is still too much stuff out there that needs cwm and wont flash right with twrp. Thats why i told the op to try both and not go just based on opinions
Billiard, to root should I go with your one click root or the one in the general sticky thread? I was planning on using the other one so I could get used to Odin but does either have and advantage? They do the same thing right?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I could be wrong but i believe the one youre referring too is where u flash a recovery in odin. Pull battery then boot to recovery, and flash a root zip in recovery. Ill double check but i mean the end result will be the same but that method tends to be a PIA with a bunch of extra steps. The one i linked you does all of the work for you. I think its as easy as it gets for someone knew to rooting the s3. Chainfire is a beast
---------- Post added at 06:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:03 AM ----------
Ya I just checked I was right. Not talking down on skunkapes method but thats too many steps i think my method is way easier. And with my custom odin i linked above you dont have to worry about checking boxes and what not i modded my version of odin to have only whats needed.
Thanks man. Going to try and do it all tomorrow morning. Will hit u up if I have some questions.

wait, got a little confused from your post... so did you flash CWM or not? you want to do backups through recovery and not from rom manager..
actually just install ROMS through Recovery too.
RECOVERY is CWM
BTW it has been reported that when the flashing of SU fails... it actually didn't fail.. and that it actually successfully flashed.. just check the app drawer to make sure
there are a few threads on this on the General section here is one follow the step by step.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
Don't worry about the SU failing.. keep trying, it'll fail about 2 times then it'll go through.

I had same issue but like 4 other threads concerning the same have said that even thou it fails reboot and go see if super user was installed in app drawer...there's even a you tube video showing that it says failed

Is there a way to push or flash SU through Odin?
I for got to load the file on my phone prior to flashing cwm .. And
Its stuck on Samsung logo...
Remove the sd card and load the su zip on it through the memory card reader on your pc then reboot the phone into recovery and install the zip or follow the instructions here- http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-ro...y-s2-sgh-t989/
I did some searches and couldn't find a confirmed/direct answer to this. I am somewhat new to flashing ROMs but not new to technology.
I have an epic 4g touch. It is rooted with the unofficial 9/18 cm nightly on it. When I look through root I have a bunch of folders/files left over from apps long since removed and never used again. I have tried factory resets and clearing/ formatting caches etc etc. The root never seems to be touched inmost of these processes. With that said, how do I do a fully clean, erase everything wipe and reinstall of cwm and cm?
Thanks for your help!

Files on your SD card can be deleted using a file explorer like esfile. If its not that please explain what files you want to get rid of. If its on your internal or sdcard it will never be wiped using factory reset.

The internal should be erased if you do a factory reset from the phone's settings menu if I'm not mistaken. Doing a factory reset in recovery doesn't though.
Correct. Not external sd. Think of a full low level format of a HD and reinstall.
That's what I wound like to do.
Also,
Is Odin a hardware based admin terminal or is it firmware?

If you really want to clean everything out, format the User storage and any MicroSD card from the Storage menu and then flash the full restore Odin one click. Good as new and no lingering stuff.
Do not do this if your phone is flashed to a different carrier. It will mess up your nvram. You will possibly lose service. If on a touchwiz rom on sprints network you can also use the code ##786# I believe. It formats everything. I would take out tour external SD card as precaution.

But if I remember correctly this also wipes out the activation data in NVRAM... not a big deal if you're on Sprint, BIG deal if you've flashed the phone over to another carrier or MVNO.
As a result I don't usually recommend unless necessary.

You can get FI03 rooted. After the one click, boot back into download mode and flash Agat's FI03 + Recovery repack by Odin. Then use Triangle Away to make the yellow triangle disappear and you're all set!
Odin is pretty straight forward. You only use the PDA option on these devices, no matter what you're flashing. One clicks have the Odin software already in there so all you need to do is install USB drivers, go to Odin mode and click Start. The regular Odin package you specify the package in PDA, go to Odin Mode and click Start. Easy peasy... but PM if you have any ??s

Odin is a proprietary Windows application made by Samsung that connects and safely updates software on a phone such as ours. If you've ever updated by Kies it uses the same method. (This is what I know of it, please correct if I'm wrong).
There's also an Odin Mode which resides on the phone... but whether or not it's on one of the eMMC partitions I'm honestly not sure. Hopefully someone can confirm that one way or the other.

Odin is download mode, part of the firmware related to the bootloader as long as your bootloader is intact download mode will be intact, its entirely seperate from the rom, kernel/recovery, and data partitions. If you want to wipe both or one SD card(internal or external) you can format them from recovery.
ETA: download mode will work even without a rom or kernel on the device, its entirely self-contained in its own partition along side the bootloader and unless you manage to delete the bootloader partition, which will hardbrick your phone, download mode will work. If you've ever had an HTC device download mode is similar to the part of hboot that allows you to run an RUU to restore your device. Kies, Odin and heimdall use download mode as a way to restore/update the rom,kernel/recovery, data, bootloader(if there's an updated version) and modem partitions

Im using the latest version of TWRP recovery and have been for some time. But I just got a new 64gb sd and TWRP wont recognize it because its exfat. I did try reformatting the sd card to fat32 using mini tools partition wizard and a couple of other programs, even tried it from command promt but after changing it to fat32 my phone would say the card was damaged. Long story short my phone for whatever reason does not like fat32 so im forced to find a recovery that will work with it. So I go to the cwm website and their link to download 6.0.2.3 touch is screwed and has been for sometime now. So here are my questions for some of you guys that may have dealt with this already...
1. What touch recovery will work with exfat preferably cwm if not twrp?
2. Is it safe to install cwm using rom manager because I have heard many horror stories?
3. If not rom manager where can I find the latest cwm touch that will work with exfat because I also read somewhere that the newest cwm doesn't do exfat either?
4. I have cwm touch 5.8.4.5 recovery img is it safe to use root explorer to create a tar. Ive created a tar before but never with root explorer?
Im on jellybean 4.1 ATT firmware, basically stock with the exception of being rooted with TWRP recovery and a audio mod installed. I have researched this but with no real definitive answers. Alot of opinions but no real answers from experience.....
Thanks ahead of time for any help.... its not like me to ask questions. If you dont believe me ask the guys in the skyrocket forums. It wounds my pride to ask so you can bet im at a point whether I had rather ask than just do and screw up then have a bigger mess lol....

Hello,
So I've been rooted for a while now, i was going to install a custom rom but decided not to a few months ago. Tonight, i decided to install aokp, however my phone would not go into cwm, only stock recover. I could have sworn it was installed, but fine, so i installed it once again with auto reboot in odin checked, and it still wouldnt enter cwm. I then tried to install it again with auto reboot checked off so i could see if i could enter it without the reboot. I ended up getting into it, but then when i was taking a NANDROID, it just froze on one of the first steps. Fine, reboot, try to enter cwm again. Nope, just stock android recovery. I am sure im installing it correctly and pressing the right button combos. I am at a total loss for what is stopping me from being able to enter cwm. I hope you guys know/help me find whats going on.
Thanks!!!

maybe you didn't actually "root" your phone to begin with lol
are you sure you have "superuser" or "superSU" app?
anyways to get CWM or TWRP recovery you need
find a up-to-date CWM or TWRP (if i spell teamwin recovery correctly)
download it
put your phone in ODIN Mode (download mode) by power + vol down + home
flash the recovery
i personally think twrp is better
they just released a new version which support ExFat
and all you need is just use terminal on your phone to install it.

Stock ROM has a built in script that reloads standard android recovery when it boots. The only way to keep it is to keep Odin auto reboot unchecked, boot directly in and make your nandroid/flash custom. Once you are on a custom ROM CWM will stick.
On a side note TWRP is a very nice recovery and many people find it much easier to use. If you insist on CWM, make sure you have the latest version. You might need to flash CWM again if you had a bad flash. It shouldn't freeze up on a nandroid.
Many people never experienced this because they flashed during early ICS when the device was released. The change was an update just before JB was released which caused this little annoying script to appear.

Thankyou!! That makes sense ;p. When I did get to start making a nandroid last night but it froze, right before it froze it said the free space on my sdcard was 1612 mb (or something like that) This is wrong, I have the 16gb i747 so I have 11.95 gb of usable storage for apps and such, after deleting some big apps I have 4.93 gb available, my sdcard is a 16 gb sdcard which has 12.06 gb available. Do the math and I have enough room on my sdcard for a nandroid, so what could be causing cwm to freeze and report false information?

what version of CWM are you currently running?
you could always try to download GooManager or ROM Manager from the Play Store.
then from one of those, install the custom recovery, GooManager for TWRP or ROM Manager for CWM.

That is a very out dated version as they are now up to version 6.0.2.3. I would try getting an updated CWM. that could very well fix your freezing/reporting problems...

CWM is very very funny and one of the reasons I switched to TWRP was for stability
In my experience errors come up on restoring images when 1) you don't use the same version you backed up the image with 2) you don't get to CWM through the same method you used while making the image (ie through ROM manager with your phone on).

Holy hell! CWM 3.0 is still around? Like RP said, you're recovery is severely outdated.

This.
Also, I was a long time CWM touch user on my old NS. After using TWRP on this phone, I will never look back at CWM. TWRP is much more user friendly. Give it a shot OP unless you're adamant in using CWM. Again, update your recovery.
Download rom manager and update your cwm and then try making a nandroid again.

I was also a CWM user, but after I got my s3 and my first flash of CWM on the s3 hard bricked my phone, I decided to use TWRP. Little did I know I was missing out on what TWRP had to offer. I won't ever turn back to CWM again lol.
That said... If you insist in CWM, this is the guide I followed to get a successful CWM flash. (This was the CWM I was running successfully for the brief time TWRP disbanded.)

The above is for the ATT variant only. If you have a different variant and can't find the link, post back and I'll find it for you

Preach brother!
So I was on rooted 4.1.1 and then I think I got hit with the heartbleed. I THOUGHT I was on 4.1.2 but then I remembered that I downgraded. Anyway, I flashed 4.3 completely stock no root and then did the OTA update to 4.4.2. Now I'm trying to restore root.
For some odd reason, odin will not flash any sort of recovery. Any ideas?
Hmm, was able to flash CF auto root... I think it just didn't like .tar file. No explanation why. Either way, gonna try to get twrp going.
For anyone who isn't able to flash a custom recovery, try the chainfire method if you haven't already.

So you were able to root the stock 4.4.2 on your L900 via odin- CF auto root, and got your custom recovery too?
I had the same issue and CF auto root was the only way for me as well. Once CF was done I updated the recovery and its all good.
Same here I had to flash CF auto root then philz_touch_6.07.9-l900.tar.md5 installed no issues. I used Odin 3.07 as .09 looked different from all the screen shots I saw. It may be fine but I didn't want to risk it.
Also want to say thanks to everyone on XDA. Second day with the Note and thanks to everyone here had no issues.

Yes, that is precisely correct. Once I used CF, I simply used goo.manager to flash twrp. Had to do the SD card write fix, but beyond that, I'm good to go.
Completely bone stock + root.
I love all the stuff people do with ROMs, but I just don't have the time (or patience) to keep up with it all and I really just need some specific root functionality.
Hope this helps!
Just curious what is the SD card write fix for?

Google set 4.4.xx up so you can't transfer files from internal storage to external. The patch fixes that.
Basically they want SD cards gone in favor of their cloud storage.
