[ND8] 4.4.2 knox removal and root - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all I have found a way to root and remove Knox from stock samsung galaxy s3 ND8 4.4.2 kitkat
** neither me or xda is responsible for any **** ups you cause so read and follow directions to a T lol
*Requirements
Samsung drivers
Download from samsung site
CF auto root
http://download.chainfire.eu/233/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.zip
Choose the right one depending on your device
Windows computer
Know how to follow directions
Time and patience
Instructions
Once all the files are downloaded extract Chainfire's CF auto root
Move the desamsungnizer and the superuser app to your SD card
Next open Odin
Reboot your phone to download mode for people who don't know how to power off the phone and press volume down home and power then press volume up to confirm
Make sure auto reboot and repartition is not checked
Click PDA and select the recovery image When your phone is connected press start and let it flash
Once complete remove your USB cord and battery put battery back in after a few seconds and reboot to recovery (volume up+home+power)
Choose install zip from sd card and choose the supersu Zip file
Confirm flash and then flash the desamsungnizer file
After complete reboot phone it may day android is upgrading when the phone fully powers on go to manage appliations and go to all and scroll down and see if you see super su if so then all went well if not retry from odin step
OK next go to the play store and download root checker superuser update fixer
superuser
Root checker
terminal emulatoremulator
Nobloat free
Ok open up superuser update fixer and force fix the binary and you should get a root request popup agree and close the app open terminal emulator and type the following lines
su[enter]
pm disable com.sec.knox.seandroid
*NOTE - the above to lines require you to go to a new line after typing "su", the [enter] is only a reminder, DO NOT type [enter] after su
This disabled KNOX for me - but that wasnt good enough for me - I was out for blood at this point.
I then used NoBloat free to remove any of the left overs of knox
Also for a custom recovery just download team win recovery project
Now you're good to go to flash ROMs and whatever else you would like to do
Also I apologize for the thread look this is my first time creating one
Special thanks to
Chainfire
Teamwin

Can you link to the desamsungnizer and SU files you used? I have TWRP on my S3 w/ ND8 but flashing the desamsungnizer and su ZIP files that I have that worked with MK3 do not work with ND8.

All recoveries except the very latest Philz Touch Recovery are known to have problems under ND8 / NDC.
You can find the ND8 deknoxifier (only for apps, not Bootloader) and debloater either in Development (non original), General or Themes and Apps - can't look right now.
For SuperSU.zip, just Google it and you'll find Chainfire's site or just use Philz Touch Recovery's option to reroot your phone.

Will this take away the flash count?

No it does not take away flash count and use philz touch recovery when you first flash desamsungnizer and supersu sorry forgot to mention

I must be missing a step somewhere. When I odin the chainfire tar.md5 file, I see RESET instead of PASS. Also when I reboot into recovery, it reboots after 10 seconds, while reinstalling the stock recovery. I get no chance to flash anything else. Can I flash these other files from Odin? If so, in which area (e.g. PDA) of Odin do I place the files
(Sprint SPH-L710 with stock ND8)

Flash Philz Touch Recovery in tar.md5 format from Odin. Reboot into recovery and in one of its menus is an option to reroot.
Then flash everything else from Philz.

Glad it worked! There was already a more complete (no offense, OP) thread for this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2750846, but yes IMHO it should be in the OP.

[GT-N80xx/SHW-M480x] CF-Auto-Root

Check your device model ! Settings -> About device -> Model number. See the third post for exact support model numbers. If your device is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !
CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices and has clocked over 8 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Stock recovery
Installation and usage
Flash the CF-Auto-Root package as PDA in ODIN (details on how to do that are in next post), and your device should reboot into a modified recovery (signified by a large red Android logo) and it will install SuperSU for you and restore the stock recovery, and reboot back into Android.
If you don't get to the red Android logo, boot into recovery manually ("adb reboot recovery", or boot while holding Power+VolUp+Home).
Using this root increases your flash counter. You should run Triangle Away (see below) after rooting to reset the counter. Note that if you want to run custom kernels or custom recoveries, your flash counter will be set to 1 at every boot. Either configure Triangle Away to reset the counter at every boot (Play version only) or only reset the counter when you need to go into warranty.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Not included - Triangle Away
Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter after installing CF-Root. The flash counter keeps track of how many custom firmwares you have flashed, as this voids warranty. (No idea what this about ? Read up on it, you will want to use this !)
Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

ODIN Installation (detailed)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
- NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, hold VolUp+Power (for several seconds) to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!
You may now optionally want to install and run Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.

Hi and thank you for all this. Since we still have the stock recovery, I suppose we would be able to receive OTA updates?
Will root remain after updating the OS?

OTA depends on a lot of factors, but it certainly wont be the recovery being the problem
If root remains depends on several factors as well. If you have SuperSU Pro and have enabled Survival Mode under settings, usually it'll stay.
Chainfire is here!!! I certainly hope this is the beginning of some dev action on this tab. Good work!

Question: Not that I desperately need it but is it no longer possible to install those "*.zip file mods" like I used to do with my old Note1 using CF-Root? (if not, what do I need to do if I want to do it?)
Brgds... /Tubgirl
CF-Root is no longer support custom recoveries like CWM, you can flash those separately if you wish.
Personally I don't use them at all anymore. I flash .zip mods with Mobile ODIN.

Thanks... so you're telling me that those 'zip mods' can be installed with mobile Odin (or PC Odin for that matter)? I had no idea, hehe. I thought CWM had to be used for that.
Since I seem to have your attention... is there any other way to make the equivalent of a "CWM backup" using Mobile Odin or any other tool?

Only Mobile ODIN Pro can install these zip mods, not Lite, nor PC ODIN.
As for backup/restore, I personally just use Titanium Backup for what's important, but such a feature may be coming to Mobile ODIN in the future.
I'm already heading over to the Play Store to buy Mobile Odin Pro!
Thanks... /Tubgirl

The work you do is phenomenal Chainfire btw. You must be a very experienced programmer, or very intelligent (or both).

No CWM and such ?
I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries, and I am no longer supporting them. On newer devices they cause flash counter and OTA flashing issues. If you really want one, others do provide versions of CWM and TWRP for most devices. Personally I just use Mobile ODIN to install ZIPs and Titanium Backup for my backup/restore needs. I do always want root though, and as such I'm still supporting CF-Auto-Root as quick way to root.

Mobile ODIN is like a mobile version of desktop Odin. Meaning that you can flash tars in the PDA slots. Unsure...someone could give a more thorough explanation... I don't use it.

BTW, Mobile Odin is easily the most useful app I have!
Thank you for all of your work!
wow this is gonna help a ton of new peeps to the world of rooting, thanx op.
I have updated all the CF-Auto-Root downloads. The scripts have been slightly improved, the roboto font is now used, and SuperSU has been updated to v0.98 !
There is no need to flash the updated version if you are currently successfully rooted (you'll have gotten the latest SuperSU from Google Play updates already).

Thanks!
This worked perfectly, thank you so much. Since this was a free app and I bought the SuperSU Pro version to say thanks
Root in under a minute, why is this not pinned?? I was having some issues with WiFi calling so I ODIN'd back to ICS and it resolved them. Did the OTA update to JB from Tmo's servers but was missing root horribly. Can't believe how easy it was.
Thank You Chainfire

Ditto on the Thank You,
I got the older version of Root and bought the Odin Pro for a thank you to Chainfire!
As we all KNOW, Chainfire Rocks! Props to him man, Major Props!
Aloha from Hawaii
Just used on the Stock Canadian JB update and as everything else chainfire does worked perfectly. Absolutely amazing work, I have tried to buy the pro version of all your software is that better then directly donating?
You rock, saved me a massive headache rooting 3 guys at work phones!
Chainfire Always comes through with the best gear. Everytime I need something from Chainfire, I always buy it. My way of saying thanks.

Rooted my S3 in about 27 seconds from start to finish. Wow, pretty simple.
Now what I'm understanding is you guys are suggesting NOT to install a CWM or TWRP recovery? and just flash the roms from Odin?
---------- Post added at 10:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ----------
Sorry quick question: I know you don't support custom recovery modes like CMW and TWRP, and I notice CF AUTO ROOT flashes stock recovery... so as a noob, am I to understand that correctly, if I were to install TWRP (for example) and decide its not for me or simply want to go back to stock recovery, I could simple re-run CF AUTO ROOT? and it would re-write the stock recovery mode?
Should Auto Reboot be checked in Odin? Its checked by default and it is not mentioned to uncheck it unless one runs into problems.

- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
Then after flashing, pull the battery, and boot with VolUp+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually.

I left it. Strange though, I used the provided odin and those options were greyed out, and auto reboot was checked. It was really straight forward. It was so well made, I was compelled to help out chainfire and bought triangle away.

Just used this method to root a brand new T999. Fresh out of the box I did the OTA update to Jellybean, checked it out for a few hours as-is, then just rooted it now. I have Titanium Backup installed and I'm already freezing bloatware. Thanks so much for this method! Worked fantastic. Chainfire rules, but you all know that already.
Does this work on the latest 4.1.1 jb os?

[Q] Newbe from Sprint

I just moved over from Sprint and got me a shiny new Note 2 from T-Mobile. I am looking into installing the Jedi ROM but want to make sure my bases are covered before I create a $700 paper weight.
I got the ODIN, autoroot, and Jedi ROM files downloaded and ready to go but I don't see any mention in the forums about CWM or any sort of recovery. Am I missing a critical step or do I have everything that I need?

Also, use this TWRP install method to check for available updates...
And, JIC...
No, CWM and TWRP files(backup's) aren't Cross-compatible
Yes, TWRP is just as reliable, if not more so, than CWM. So unless the Mod OP, your wanting to try out, suggests one custom recovery over the other, than I'd stick with TWRP

[Q] Rooted SPH-L710 with ODIN & CF-Auto-Root, Root Checker shows NOT rooted. HELP?!

[Q] Rooted SPH-L710 with ODIN & CF-Auto-Root, Root Checker shows NOT rooted. HELP?!
I have had my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 for about a year now, and finally decided to give root access a try on the phone. I followed all of the step-by-steps tutorial, that Chainfire posted on his ([SPH-L710] CF-Auto-Root) thread, and have run into an issue. ODIN shows that the rooting procedure has passed, and the red android dude popped up, and the phone rebooted. Anytime I turn on my device, I immediately receive the notification that "unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped working". And running the app "root checker" returns the message "sorry! this device does not have proper root access". I went into download mode, and the flash counter shows that I have 1 custom rom/binary, whatever its called, and that my phone has the custom rom/binary status. I did some researching on the forums and threads, and it would seem that there's no clear cut way to fix this issue; given my phone's specific state. I don't want to brick my phone, so I need an experts solution! Thanks a million in advance!
If you want to leave root alone, you can reflash stock 4.4.2 is in Odin. But if you want to try to fix root you can flash a custom recovery is in Odin so you can flash an update to superuser using the custom recovery

I would like the keep the phone rooted (which it has an issue with)....so as for fixing the root, by flashing a custom recovery....where do I find the custom recovery, and how exactly do I do this in ODIN, to specifically update superuser?
**NOTE: I downloaded a different superuser app on the google play store, (which will obviously not be saved/stored to system/app, like chainfire's SuperSU app is) and when I opened the Superuser app, it returns a message "SuperSU binary is out of date". I'm not sure what this means exactly, but maybe it might mean something to you, haha.
Have you tried this:
Go to the Google play store and find supersu. It should give you the option to "update" (versus "install")

All it says is" open". That's the only option on the Google play store.

If you're looking for;
Odin
http://odindownload.com/
Philz
http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=25216#files
SuperSU (zip)
http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/
But as suggested try opening supersu first. Mine would fc, so I just flashed the supersu file above, from philz recovery.
I would also suggest Uninstall in the other su app. They never played well together (for me)

If you're ND8 or NDC bootloader, the only completely working custom recovery is the very latest Philz Touch Recovery.

roirraW "edor" ehT....THANKS A MILLION!! I have successfully in ODIN, flashed Philz Touch Recovery onto my S3. I booted into recovery, went in Philz settings, and clicked on the "re-root" option. I rebooted the device into the main system/shell, ran root checker to verify root status.....AND VOILA! ROOT STATUS GRANTED, BISH! I downloaded SuperSU from the play store, and everything seems to be running like butter. Consider this thread CLOSED!

I need help toooo!
i've been having the same issue! thank you for working it out. i really want to complete the root, but im having trouble.
I'm very new to this stuff and I don't understand some of the instrutions.
could someone made make a clear cut instruction on how to do this?
I have an SPH-L710
I used Odin with CF- Auto Root.
When I try to open SuperSU, I get, "Unfortunately, Supersu has stopped." and I can't update it in Play. Just like OP.
I'm unfamiliar with recoveries and how to install them. I have the latest philz touch and SuperSu Zips on my computer ready to go. I have odin 3.07.
If Jessooca could make a clear cut instruction that would be awesome. Or anyone really..I just need some help.
Oh, and my computer won't recognize my phone. It did for a moment, but It hasn't been working for the past hour.
thank you!
thank you! that worked like a charm. however, i really wanted some free tethering, but it looks like kitkat won't allow FoxFi to do it! a pop up comes through about subscribing to the service. I installed SlimKat, and I hate it. It's fast and I can do the free tethering, but it's so ugly. I want to go back to my rooted kitkat. What should I do?
I don't think i made a correct back up. i thought i did, but i guess i didn't.
I'm downloading the official ROM for my SPH-L710 right now.
How can I return to a normal rooted kitkat?:good:

You might want to check in philz for any backups. If you have 1 it's easy to reinstall. If not, then you would have to flash your stock tar in Odin. Then, flash philz and then root. The more you do it the easier it gets. But, make sure that you are not downgrading by trying to flash an older stock tar. Downgrading your boot loader will cause a hard brick...

Ok, first off....no offense to the poster 'Jessooca', but the steps she has posted to solve your issue are in part, slightly incorrect and misguiding. The following steps are *EXACTLY* how you should proceed, in order to fix the problem/issue you are having (the EXACT same issue I dealt with for the past two days) :
Step One:
IF you haven't done so already, download the Samsung Galaxy S3 USB drivers from the following link. This should solve your connectivity problem. Following the link below, scroll down just a little bit, and click on the downloads tab located just to the right of the 'Manuals' tab. Click on the blue box that says "EXE", and this should get the proper driver downloaded for your Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3. And obviously, install the downloaded driver after it completes the download.
Link:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SPH-L710MBBSPR?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000279#
Step Two:
I know that you have stated that you have already downloaded the 'Philz Touch Recovery'.zip file....but there is a chance you may not have downloaded the proper file for your specific and exact handset. So, here is the link for 'Philz Touch Recovery' that you should download and use for this process. It should be a direct link for the download file. I'll post a second link that you should only use as an alternative, in the event that the first link does not work. IF the first link didn't work, then make sure you download the most recently uploaded version of the Philz touch recovery from the alternative link; should be Sun, July 6th...and also be sure to click on the download link (there's two separate links) titled "philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte.tar.md5"...as it will be much easier to work with than the .zip file.
Link One:
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte.tar.md5
Alternative Link:
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
Step Three:
Now that we have the proper 'Philz Touch Recovery' file downloaded, you will need to download a different version of ODIN, as the 3.07 version you have will not suit our needs for this procedure. The link for the proper version of ODIN you will need is posted directly below. Download, extract it, and put the extracted folder somewhere on your computer that is handy or easy to find later. I'd suggest making a folder on your desktop from the very start of this procedure, and name it 'SPH-L710 Root Files', or w/e works best for you. Save all the files, or move all of the files you might have already downloaded at this point into that folder. Always nice to be organized and shizzz.
Link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=581913
Step Four:
Alright, were getting closer to being done with this whole ordeal. Follow the link I have posted below, for the proper instructions on how to flash 'Philz Touch Recovery' in Odin to your device (the version of Odin we just downloaded from step three...obvi). Reading the instructions, you'll notice that it mentions that auto-reboot into recovery mode may not work properly after the file is flashed in Odin. This actually happened to myself....and seeing as how we have had the exact same problem with rooting our phones, I would suggest from the start, to uncheck the auto reboot option in Odin, and then manually boot into recovery mode after Odin successfully flashes the file to your phone. If you take my advice, and follow what I just said, your phone will still be in download mode after Odin flashes the file...assuming Odin says that the file successfully flashed ("PASS!"). From here, you will unplug your phone from your USB cord.....and now we will boot into the recovery file/mode we just flashed. To do this, HOLD down in this order: the Volume Up button + the Home key + the Power Button....continue to hold all 3 of these buttons down until the phone enters into recovery mode...you will be able to tell when you are in recovery.
Link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4
Step Five:
Ok, so hopefully if you did everything right to this point, and some other unforeseen issue has not arisen, you should be in Philz Touch Recovery Mode. Click on "PhilZ Settings" or "Advanced" , I can't remember for sure which one it is....but I'm almost positive it's in "PhilZ Settings"...click that option first. Within this settings menu, click on the option titled "Re-root" and click yes to proceed. After this is done, go back to the main menu and click on the "Reboot system/device" option on the very top.
Step Six:
Your phone should now boot up normally into your phones operating system/shell. Go to the Google Play store and search for and download an app called "Root Checker". Open the Root Checker app and click on the verify button. If everything worked properly, and if baby raptor Jesus loves you, the Root Checker will return the result that your phone has been properly rooted and you have root access/privileges. Now, go back to Google Play Store and download the "SuperSU" app....if it isn't already still on your phone (I had to re-download it). Open SuperSU from your apps menu/drawer and it might ask you to update the SuperSU binaries...mine did....and click on the normal method option, instead of the recommended option for HTC devices. SuperSU should update binary and your problems should all be melted away like butter by now.
** THIS IS THE EXACT SOLUTION(S) I TOOK TO FIX OUR SAME PROBLEM. I CAN'T GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK THE SAME FOR YOU, FOR WHATEVER REASON OR CIRCUMSTANCE THAT MIGHT BE. GOOD LUCK, YOU'LL DO GREAT KID :good:**

You would use philz recovery to make your backup. My apps that use root would be things like titanium backup, clean master, busy box. By going to the playstore and doing a search for root, you'll find apps that don't need root access but perform better when they have it...

WILL TRY TO BE BRIEF....maybe...
ONLY did the whole QUOTE for the fact this works on newer formats 4.4.x.... (for now)...
IMO, this SHOULD out in the main thread or something.
Seems that just trying to use Chainfire Auto root does not work on 4.4.x...HOWEVER THIS does honestly work right the first time!!! Do need to add that I have tried Auto w/Odin (3.09/3.07/an 1.85) so many times it Nuckin' Futz....
OK, have been in same boat and working extremely hard and long on this issue (rooting SGS3 on 4.4.2) for the past week or so! I do really mean work on this issue. Have read an researched tons ...Starting w/4.3 to 4.4.x, as well as what is coming down the darn pike on this matter. Look up what Mr. Chainfire has posted in the last month... might get folks thinking twice on that new phone purchase, not just the cost, but what they end up with.
Anyway, I want to thank you....
Seems to me, the main thing that has kept me from rooting was this little tid-bit>>> "After it says "PASS" unplug and go right into RECOVERY from this point, (meaning from download mode right to recovery)"....as well as Once in Phliz recovery> RE_ROOT, then boot into system
Truly hope this helps others with there SGS3 (l710)
Thanks Again.
P.S.
reason for the red>So hopefully others on stock 4.4.x, can see 1 honest easy way to root

roirraW "edor" ehT....THANKS A MILLION!!
Cheers from Lawrence, Kansas!,
