CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock Samsung firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices and has clocked over 8 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Stock recovery
Installation and usage
Flash the CF-Auto-Root package as PDA in ODIN (details on how to do that are in next post), and your device should reboot into a modified recovery (signified by a large red Android logo) and it will install SuperSU for you and restore the stock recovery, and reboot back into Android.
If you don't get to the red Android logo, boot into recovery manually ("adb reboot recovery", or boot while holding Power+VolUp+Home).
Using this root increases your flash counter. You should run Triangle Away (see below) after rooting to reset the counter. Note that if you want to run custom kernels or custom recoveries, your flash counter will be set to 1 at every boot. Either configure Triangle Away to reset the counter at every boot (Play version only) or only reset the counter when you need to go into warranty.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Not included - Triangle Away
Triangle Away can be used to reset the flash counter after installing CF-Root. The flash counter keeps track of how many custom firmwares you have flashed, as this voids warranty. (No idea what this about ? Read up on it, you will want to use this !)
Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

ODIN Installation (detailed)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Auto-Root-....zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar.md5 file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
- NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, hold VolUp+Power (for several seconds) to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.
New to Samsung? Unfamiliar with Odin? Think all the above is a hassle? Get used to it. It's very simple, and us Samsung folk use Odin (or Mobile ODIN ) for everything! It's so very very convenient once you get used to it. Notice the 30 second comment above? For experienced users, the entire process indeed takes only 30 seconds!
You may now optionally want to install and run Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.

Hi and thank you for all this. Since we still have the stock recovery, I suppose we would be able to receive OTA updates?
Will root remain after updating the OS?

OTA depends on a lot of factors, but it certainly wont be the recovery being the problem
If root remains depends on several factors as well. If you have SuperSU Pro and have enabled Survival Mode under settings, usually it'll stay.

Question: Not that I desperately need it but is it no longer possible to install those "*.zip file mods" like I used to do with my old Note1 using CF-Root? (if not, what do I need to do if I want to do it?)
Brgds... /Tubgirl
CF-Root is no longer support custom recoveries like CWM, you can flash those separately if you wish.
Personally I don't use them at all anymore. I flash .zip mods with Mobile ODIN.

Thanks... so you're telling me that those 'zip mods' can be installed with mobile Odin (or PC Odin for that matter)? I had no idea, hehe. I thought CWM had to be used for that.
Since I seem to have your attention... is there any other way to make the equivalent of a "CWM backup" using Mobile Odin or any other tool?

Only Mobile ODIN Pro can install these zip mods, not Lite, nor PC ODIN.
As for backup/restore, I personally just use Titanium Backup for what's important, but such a feature may be coming to Mobile ODIN in the future.
I'm already heading over to the Play Store to buy Mobile Odin Pro!

No CWM and such ?
I have personally moved away from permanent custom recoveries, and I am no longer supporting them. On newer devices they cause flash counter and OTA flashing issues. If you really want one, others do provide versions of CWM and TWRP for most devices. Personally I just use Mobile ODIN to install ZIPs and Titanium Backup for my backup/restore needs. I do always want root though, and as such I'm still supporting CF-Auto-Root as quick way to root.

Mobile ODIN is like a mobile version of desktop Odin. Meaning that you can flash tars in the PDA slots. Unsure...someone could give a more thorough explanation... I don't use it.

There is no need to flash the updated version if you are currently successfully rooted (you'll have gotten the latest SuperSU from Google Play updates already).

Rooted my S3 in about 27 seconds from start to finish. Wow, pretty simple.
Now what I'm understanding is you guys are suggesting NOT to install a CWM or TWRP recovery? and just flash the roms from Odin?
---------- Post added at 10:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ----------
Sorry quick question: I know you don't support custom recovery modes like CMW and TWRP, and I notice CF AUTO ROOT flashes stock recovery... so as a noob, am I to understand that correctly, if I were to install TWRP (for example) and decide its not for me or simply want to go back to stock recovery, I could simple re-run CF AUTO ROOT? and it would re-write the stock recovery mode?
Should Auto Reboot be checked in Odin? Its checked by default and it is not mentioned to uncheck it unless one runs into problems.

This method took me about 10 min , successfully clearing count , doing away with root giving me factory out of the box ready for ATT store exchange if needed.
Many thanks to cortez.

@CF - donation made for your efforts with the "keep it simple root method"! this is the easiest method to root and then unroot that i've used. right after i rooted my device, i installed GooManager, flashed TWRP and began customizing my device. however, after a couple of days with my GN2, i've determined i'm not the targeted user for this device, so i unrooted and returned to att. this is a solid device, super fast, fluid with unlimited potential! In my case, I simply prefer the size of my S3.
my unroot, return to stock rom, stock recovery and Normal device status are listed below. AS ALWAYS I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS FUBAR's YOUR DEVICE. i'm simply posting for informational purposes only. (not sure all of the steps below are are necessary):
Reboot to TWRP recovery to complete a factory reset
Used CF's method to re-root and reinstall the stock recovery (e.g., method listed in 2nd Post of this thread).
Purchased & installed Triangle-Away from market
Used Triangle-Away to reset the counter
After reboot (from step 4) uninstalled Triangle Away
Via SuperSU, used the Full Unroot option to unroot. Checked GN2 Device Status and it said Modified
Booted into stock recovery performed a factory reset.
After device rebooted, checked Device Status again and it said Normal
Returned the device to att corp store; att checked and confirmed device status (as Normal) and issued a refund.
CF, thanks again for your efforts!

So u are using the same tar file to root? This will install stock recovery?
Sent from the TermiNOTEr 2!
Thanks op. This will be very useful in case I ever need to return my phone or submit my phone in for warranty service. I was looking for a stock rom that could be flashed using odin, but couldn't find one.

Not using a tar file to root.
If such file was available this thread title would read
***AT&T STOCK TAR FILE AVAILABLE!!!!***
I would throw in some big smileys it would be a party thread.
When you root using Chainfire method it provides Stock Recovery to fall back on.

Thanks I did it worked flawlessly.

Nice just what i needed to return my note 2 for replacement unit.
Not working for me
I tried this, to the letter, it didn't work.
I never did anything other than rooting using CF-auto root to root so I could restore from Titanium Backup.
I'm on the i317M.
I did a factory reset through the stock recovery (Would TWRP make a difference?), re-rooted using CF-auto root, installed Triangle Away, ran it, did a full unroot through SU, did another factory reset and still, device shows modified.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I desperately want to go back to stock.
EDIT: TriangleAway says: "on new devices like the SGS3/SGNote2/SGNote10.1, status can only be reset on some firmwares - they must be stock firmwares!" - I am on a stock firmware! But it doesn't reset my status. In download mode, it still says "custom" - annoying!

Yes TWRP could play factor.
If in your shoes I would,
Chainfire root.
Install TWRP using Goomanager
Make back up in TWRP then reboot device.
Boot into TWRP and install recovery
From there follow direction in op to get stock.

What do you mean by "Boot into TWRP and install recovery"? Flash the stock recovery while in TWRP? Why do this if CF-autoroot will flash stock recovery anyway?
What I did:
CF-autoroot
Goomanager - install TWRP
Create backup in TWRP
Wipe /data and /cache in TWRP
Reboot into download mode
Flash CF-autoroot (flashes stock recovery)
Run Triangle Away
EDIT: SU Full Unroot (Yes I did this, I forgot to mention)
Check device status - still modified
Factory reset through stock recovery
Check device status - still modified.
What is preventing my device from reading "normal" where others have succeeded? It's puzzling. Anyway, thanks for all your help. I will probably just wait for a stock ODIN flashable firmware to make everything well again.

based on your reply, it appears you missed the step to open the SuperSU app and select the Full Unroot option. once this is done, then perform a factory reset from stock.

Verify the root method, you can used adb shell su or install RootExplorer.apk.
Good work buddy. Much appreciated for sharing.
Am just testing my new I9500 (for warranty purposes) first, and then will apply the CWM & root.
Currently have I9500XXUAMDE, but downloading the newer Thai firmware I9500XXUAMDL. Hopefully this method will work. Will report back later if nobody reports success for this firmware before hand.
Edit, for all those following this thread, don't forget to make a nandroid BEFORE applying the root.
Cheers,
UITA
Edit: HotFile link "404 - Not Found"
I wrote the same in the development tread, so make copy here ...
Hi cofface, thank you for your recovery and root.
I have a question. Your recovery make backup with strange path - /data/media/, but user-accessed area of inner-memory have path - /data/media/0. So we don't have easy access to backup via PC connection. Is this possible to change path for backup?

Both links not working
I already rooted with your previous recovery which has worked fine. Whats the story on this one, any need to upgrade to it? As I read it this is just to enable the same recovery for newer firmwares that the older version wasn't working with? I'm on DE and there was no update available to me in Kies.
Not working for - I9500XXUAMDL
Not Working for I9500XXUAMDK
Works fine on SHV-E300S(SGS4 in Korea, EXYNOS 5410).
Flashing update.zip files and wiping cache and dalvik-cache works flawless
Thx a lot dev!
Still getting the "404 - Not found" message when try the download link.

[GT-i9500] cofface CWM 6.0.3.2 RECOVERY & ROOT (EASY and WORKING) New update
Hi everyone.
I recently got a used Note 2. I've been doing a bit of reading in this section and just wanted to confirm a couple of things.
First off my phone's description:
Carrier: Sprint
Model Number: SPH-L900
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband Version: L900VPUBMK4
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-2106854 [email protected] #1 Mon Nov 11 20:33:03 KST 2013
Build Number: JSS15J.L900VPUBMK4
SE for Android Status: Enforcing SEPF_SPH-L900_4.3_0010
Hardware Version: L900.09
(1) Even though the phone came wiped of all previous data I would like to do a factory reset. Billard412's guide is mentioned several times. Is this the option to go with for my phone?
(2) The phone is not rooted at the moment. Should I use the CF-Auto Root method by Chainfire first and then proceed to install TWRP and then restore back to stock using Billard412's guide?
Thanks for your help in advance.
To start with you have the 100% KNOX on your phone so Billard412's back to stock will be the option you want to use.
You will need to download
TWRP recovery (recommended because billards zip works best with it)
Billards back to stock mc2 with counter reset
The root file located in billards thread
Prep steps
Backup everything you want from your internal sdcard (this will get wiped)
place billards rom and root files on your external sdcard
1. boot phone into download mode
2. use odin to flash twrp recovery (any version but 2.7) make sure you uncheck the reboot option in odin
3. once finished remove cable and battery
4. hold the recovery boot key sequence (vol up, home, and power keys) then insert battery (while holding keys)
5. once in recovery wipe everything
6. flash billards rom (do not wipe anything else after this step)
7. flash the root file
8. reboot and dont get worry when things get funky this is normal
9. the phone will take a bit to boot
10. now you have stock mc2 with root
11. install your recovery of choice (if flashing touchwiz 4.3 or aosp 4.4 roms use Philz 6.07.9) this can be done with odin or an image flashing app
12. now you can flash whatever rom you want
FYI -- when going from touchwiz 4.1x to 4.3 or aosp 4.4 you should format your internal sdcard. The newer roms use a different location for your internal sdcard and without proper formatting you will end up with issues (mostly random reboots and apps force closing) -- Same goes if you go from 4.3 TW/aosp 4.4 to 4.1x TW/4.3 or lower aosp
jlmancuso, thanks for the reply. Couple of things to clarify from your post:
- Regarding the Prep steps.
- I don't have anything on this phone yet so I don't think I need to back anything up. Even if if did the "Android system recovery <3e>" recovery menu does not have an option to back anything up
- Regarding using Odin to flash TWRP
- The 2.7 version to avoid is for TWRP correct? I went to TWRP's Sprint Note 2 page and I cannot seem to find a different version. Where should I get the version of TWRP that actually works?
- From the XDA page on Odin, which version should I use 3.09 or 1.85?
- All of the boxes must be unchecked including the reboot option? If not which ones need to be checked?
- I click on the "PDA" button to load the TWRP zip file correct?
- Regarding step 8:
- What do you mean "dont get worry when things get funky"? Funky as in the phone takes long to reboot or the screen flashes weird colors/patterns?
- Also, I came across Galaxy Note2 TOOLKIT V5.0.0 SPRINT thread. That one seems pretty easy to follow through. Would that option work for me given that I have the KNOX update?
Thanks again for your help.
Well, I've done a bit more reading into the Galaxy Note2 TOOLKIT V5.0.0 SPRINT thread and it seems that might be the way to go. Mark mentions the KNOX update in his changelog. I don't have the necessary posts to post a question in that thread so hopefully someone sees this that's familiar with that method. Does this method apply to a phone that has already undergone the KNOX update?
From what I can understand, Mark has made a recovery as well as a root tool. I bought this phone second hand so any warranty issues (e.g. flash counts, etc.) don't really apply to me. I'm just looking to get the phone to a clean state where I can start fresh and then add TWRP and Root. As far as the version of TWRP, Billard412 says (in post #604) that "Version of twrp doesn't matter as far as I know."
My second question is, using the Unified Toolkit, will i be able to restore my phone to stock and then root it with the least amount of problems?
