[Q] Preferred Restore Procedure? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see a lot of folks here who are "flash-crazed," in that they install a lot of new ROMs and whatnot, and do clean wipes in between.
Question for those of you who would fit that group - do you just spend a lot of time re-installing apps? Do you use Titanium Backup and restore all your apps that way? Does the Google autorestore work for you? I like doing a clean install (ie wipe first) when I install a ROM but the work of restoring all my apps and their associated data by hand is a real pain and I'm curious if anyone has any tips to streamline that process.
Thanks,

I use Titanium backup. Works great. If you are running into problems (e.g.FCs) might just want to restore apps with TiBa and not data.

Make sure you are using titanium pro and then use batch restore. All your apps and data will installed in one go.

Titanium Backup

Hey,
I have a question about Titanium Backup. If I understand it properly I have to lose all my apps and data to install or update a new ROM - full wipe - if necessary. Of course I may use Titanium backup but that is quite long process to restore all apps and data again, right? Do I need to tap on restoring every single app to install it etc.? AND may I restore system data as well or it makes no sense when the ROM needs a full wipe?
I really do not understand this properely. I am quite confused.
Thanks.

When I do a full wipe for a new ROM, google/market will reinstall all the apps I had and I just restore the missing apps/games that I had settings or saves for. I'd recommend to do a full backup and try yourself to see what works for you.
do not make a system backup cause it'll give you only loads of fc. Backup only installed apps. You don't have to restore app by app if you have a titanium backup pro or donate than it's doing everything for you.
If you are switching roms, you should only restore apps+data.
There is a batch mode that allows you to restore all of it at one go.
I haven't used system yet but i'm guessing you could restore some of you system setting if you do a factory reset?
You can always use something like appbrain to sync you apps again, then use titanium backup just to restore the data.

I do this after each full wipe and new rom - it's a single click batch operation using the free version of Ti.

[Q] Titanium Backup to restore apps after ROM installation.

What's the best process to use in TB to backup and restore before and after a clean install with a new rom. Should I do apps and data or just apps? I want to do a true clean install and not carry over any junk by restoring backups. Any help is appreciated.
Myself, when I do a restore from TB I will do a batch restore of just the apps. If the apps all restore with no issues then I will go back and restore the data to the apps that rely on having the data restored such as games, or anything else that may have personalized settings. This has worked well for me with no issues.
I've used this going from Aosp roms to sense roms and vice versa.

Agreed. Especially in the case of going back and forth between AOSP and Sense.
Good post.

Didn't notice that the OP also asked about backing up from a clean install...
I just did this yesterday, going from an Aosp rom to a Sense rom...
After doing your install, and getting what apps and settings taken care of that you want, go into TB and do a batch backup of both the apps and the system settings.
I've never really used the system settings backups, other than wifi info, but I just like to have the backup'd settings for just in case moments.
I also will clean out my backups from time to time, doing a complete delete of the backups. But before I do this, I make a copy of my TB sd card folder and place it into a folder on my notebook for safe keeping in case I ever need it. Never needed it yet, but you never know...
Awesome! Thanks for the help guys. You definitely answered my questions. I have yet to have a problem, knock on wood. I just wanted to make sure I'm not carrying over any erroneous data.

this is why we have Titanium Backup...
1. use it to backup all user apps + data
2. nandroid backup
3. full wipe, flash new rom
4. install TB if the ROM doesn't come with it, then restore all user apps + data
don't backup and/or restore system data betwen ROMs, as they're often incompatible and will screw things up
No, You need to delete them, but the poster above me has the solution

Back your app data only (you can sync contacts and calendar from Gmail) and restore after you have installed all your apps. TB is not compatible with all ROMa, you can have problems. Use NANDROID backups to investigate which way works best.
Cheers

good point, though have not known of TB incompatibilty between roms.
@honglajiao you might as well still backup all user apps and data, because TB can still restore the data separately.
in addition to using google to backup/sync contacts, SMS backup+restore (free in market) is good for texts.
and once again, don't backup/restore system data!

+1 for SMS backup and restore. Simple, but excellent.
Cheers
There is a way to try and that is to delete dalvik-cache between flashing roms. But because of the huge difference in design of roms nowadays, it is difficult to implement. Supernova does not require a wipe before flashing because my script migrates even Froyo to Gingerbread without issues..
You can use the ic scirpt to install your apps at boot and tb to restore data.

Back up and Restore

I'm just wondering, If I backup my tab (data files, apps, etc.) using CWM, then flash CM12, can I advance restore my apps and data files into it without problems? Im afraid I don't want to download again all of my apps after installing CM12..

Most likely not. Pretty much any other base (you didn't say what you were coming from. CM11?) going to CM12, migrating user data like that (same as a "dirty flash") will cause major issues (not booting into OS is the likely result).
Just use Titanium Backup to migrate your apps and app data. That worked fine for me going to CM12.

I forgot, I came from stock. By the way, I decided to download again the apps that I needed. Thanks anyway for the info.

Going from Sense to CM12, its definitely a bad idea to try to migrate data. Downloading the apps again is certainly an option; although a cumbersome one, and of course this just restores apps and not the app data (may or may not be a big deal in your case). For anyone flashing ROMs, I'd recommend checking out Titanium Backup for very reliable and easy backup and restores of apps and app data. And its worth it to pay the few dollars to get the Pro key to unlock all the features, including the batch functions, which allow you to backup and restore all your apps (or filter as you like) with just a few taps.
In particular Titanium Pro can extract apps and app data from Nandroid backups.

Question Best way to backup apps and data? Any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
I'm going to flash oxygen os since most of the problems have been solved.
Does anyone know a way to backup apps and data, i tried titanium backup, but it seems that it can only backup but fails to restore them. Thanks in advance
Titanium backup worked fine for me. But other app I know is Helium Backup. But it is a super old app not sure if it's working perfectly. Worked for some of my apps.

Swift Backup
OnePlus Clone Phone app if you have a spare OnePlus/Oppo phone.
It's not a backup/restore app, but it can copy apps and their data - something which is not possible without root any more.
I would use apps' built-in feature to backup, if available, before relying on Titanium/ Swift, etc. What use is a backup that cannot be restored?
In my case, there aren't too many apps that need an offline backup, so it works for me. If you are flashing a new ROM, it is better to setup everything fresh than restoring from 3rd party backups.
