Rooted M8, now trying to unroot so I can get updates. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all
Just bought a M8 and I wanted to root if for a few apps I use, however I didn't know that by putting a custom recovery mod I would not be able to update my phone. So I am trying my best to get it back to stock however I can not find a RUU that matches my CID. Could someone please help me find a way to get my phone back to stock so I can get updates with no problems.
-Cheers
P.S: Lesson learnt, always back up your phone before attempting this bull**** -.-, miss my s4. Could find anything I needed on that thing.

I have a posted a link to a backup on mega. Search me.

You don't need to unroot to get updates. If you're s-off just flash a stock recovery. If your s-on flash a stock recovery and relock the boot loader. Takes about 2 mins to do either.

ihave prblem

When I mean unroot, i mean my recovery mode wont allow me to do uodates due to sense.

Like I already said all you need do is flash one of the stock recoveries from this thread, use whichever you had originally for your CID.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
You can't ota with a custom recovery.

I love ViperROM and would never want to go back. They are very good about getting updates out pretty quick. So not long after an official OTA comes I think Viper is quick on it. I believe we already had one for the M8. My friend has tried a few roms and thinks Viper is the best.

no idea, anyway to find out?

I just looked at the software version of my phone under About and downloaded the matching recovery. Then I flashed the recovery, installed the OTA update, and reflashed TWRP after.

Did you read anything on the stock backup page?
As long as the base number is the same then you should be able to flash a recovery that matches. You have software version 1.54.708.5 so just flash one that begins with 1.54.
The nearest is:
STOCK RECOVERY 1.54.707.5
Nothing will happen so just go ahead and try it.
Here's the OTA, but it won't install unless you already have the stock OS installed.

Ok, thanks for your heads up.
I have unlock and s-off my m8. And flash a GPE rom, which make my phone fails to recognise my SIM card. And then I flash Revolution HD 8.0, still no signal at all. Thus I tried to flash offical rom but failed.
I guess somehow you have killed your radio and you are running a custom recovery?
Post the output of - fastboot getvar all .

OK, you HAVE to follow the guide in Post #2 of the GPe RUU thread to go back to a Sense-based ROM cause the partitions are changed with the GPe conversion. Until you do that it will fail to update any ROMs

Download the ROM again and try again, if it fails copy the .zip file to your computer, use a program like 7zip to extract the files and then use 7zip to zip it again.
It's strange but I did find that some of the .zip files that gets downloaded, firmware, ROMs etc can't be opened and read, throws errors even in windows but you can unzip it with 7zip and then re-zip it and it works fine.
I read somewhere(Can't recall where) that remote 32 header error occurs because the zip can't be properly read or unzipped, so perhaps the above might be a solution... I'm hoping so at least :fingers-crossed:

You don't need USB Debugging on at all, you just need to flash the firmware ZIP in RUU mode and then do the rest...5 minute job if you have any idea what you're doing

Version-main is empty as a result of flashing a buggy TWRP and CID is superCID thus hard to tell. MID would fit for 154.401 as well as 2.22.401 recovery. To be sure a question. Are you still running stock ROM. If yes you could check setting > about phone > software information > software number. If you are running a custom ROM this information is likely not to be valid. o2 Germany stock ROM e.g. has a x.xx.207.xx version number

Hi
I am running Android Revolution HD.
If you flash Philz Recovery, you will at least be able to get your version-main back and then you'll be able to look for that version in the Stock Recovery Section.
You CID should probably either be O2___001 or O2___002..

Hi John
Can i install Philz alongside TWRP?
Also i downloaded Build prop editor and under "ro.aa.cidlist" has the following cid numbers
htc 001
htc e11
htc 102
htc 203
htc 405
etc. Are they relevant?
Philz will overwrite TWRP as you can only run one recovery at a time.
This list names CID of different carriers.

How long ago did you get the phone, and have you done any OTA updates since you've had it.
If you bought it before March/April (ish) and haven't done any updates then it's likely that you're on the 1.12.206.17 version.
If you've done an OTA since then you'll probably be on 1.54.206.5... in which case try this, this is the stock recovery for 1.54.206.5..
There are Backups for both versions in the Stock Backups Page.
This is for the 1.12.206.17
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_9hxg3el0DpN2xpbkx6NGkwRE0/edit?pli=1
And this is for the 1.54.206.5

HBOOT 3.18 ? You updated the OTA to latest 4.4.3?
If so then you're fresh out of luck, I don't see any 2.xx.206/207.x stock recoveries for O2(UK/German) devices. Even on the German forum they only have the 1.54.206.5/10 ones.
Only choices you have then is to either:
1) convert - Seeing as you are S-OFF
2) roll back to older version and go through update again this time taking a backup of stock recovery. Flash old Firmware, you can probably get tutorials on here somewhere on how to do it.
3) scout the mobile phone boards(locally) and see if someone can drop you a stock recovery or
4) Wait until someone uploads a stock recovery.
In order to provide these stock recoveries, we need people to upload them and share the links and as you can see, guys like you don't do it! So we're stuck with no backups to share with guys in similar position like yourself
Good Luck!

I take it they rolled out the latest 4.4.3 for the customers. Honestly I wasn't keeping tabs on whether they rolled or not. I just saw the HBOOT version and thought that he might have updated to 4.4.3 because as far as I know it only changed to 3.18 with 4.4.3 before then it was 3.16. I could be wrong though?
I suppose if the OP didn't flash any custom ROMs etc he could just go to settings > about > software information, and confirm either way

He's already on Android Revolution HD.
There's a link to the 1.54.206.5 firmware on the Android Revolution Site, but would it work with the wrong version-main in the android-info.txt
http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One_M8/206/
I think the way I got my version-main back, was to flash a different version stock recovery, it wouldn't work because it was the wrong version number, it just kept dropping back to HBoot, but it did bring it back when I then reflashed CWM / Philz.

What I meant was.. You probably had the right recovery or at least knew what one you needed.
It's a similar situation to one that I was in the other day. I had no version-main, so I didn't know which recovery to flash. So I took a guess and flashed a stock recovery for my device, it didn't work because it was the wrong one, but it did give me my version-main back in getvar all.
I then flashed back to Philz Recovery because I had no recovery. Once I knew the version main, I managed to find the recovery... :good:

To confirm I am on 4.4.3. I will see what comes along in near future. Should of read a few more posts before rooting.. Again help appreciated.

Hi Rlumby.
I was just wondering why you want to return to the stock recovery. Do you need to to send it back, so you need to return it back to it's original condition or do you want to keep it open for OTA's, etc...
Since you are S-Off and SuperCID, I don't see any reason why you couldn't flash another carriers firmware, or like BerndM14 said, maybe convert it to a Developer Edition or a GPE Edition.. It will wipe everything so if you do go down this road, make sure you back everything up first...
...John...
Hi John.
It was just an option should I choose to. Now you mention it I may go for developer edition. Will check out what's out there.

[Q] Go back to stock

Hi there.
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I want to go back to stock recovery to perform an OTA (4.4.4). I'm currently using ViperOne m8 2.5. My Cid is called HTC_Y13. But I couldn't find it anywhere.
What to do?

here's the steps to get you back to stock
download this > https://mega.co.nz/#!VcZAgIgT!flJca5C_hRl6pgAn5EXp4qbJCl0ONjZB8PHNylw5f3Y
while it's downloading go into TWRP and choose Backup
uncheck everything except boot ... do the backup
this will create a folder on your sdcard TWRP/BACKUPS/your_Serial_no/Todays date
when the download is complete extract it to the Todays date folder. Make sure it's just files in the folder and no folders
now boot back to TWRP and choose restore and restore the backup / make sure system and boot are checked.
the last step is to put back the stock recovery
use this one > http://d-h.st/WB4
you flash it the same as TWRP
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
your phone should now be back to stock and ready for OTA update

COLLECTION of Stock backup's
Your CID is HTC__Y13 you can download any x.xx.401.x backup from that thread.
The WWE (World Wide English) nandroid backups have the same main version build numbers. All these nands have the main number that is based on the x.xx.401.xx build and all these CIDS are compatible

Download any x.xx.401.x backup (HTC__001 will be fine) and backup through correct custom recovery(Philz if it was Philz, TWRP if it was a TWRP created backup).
You can also download any x.xx.401.x stock recovery for your device OR you can grab the latest stock recovery from the OTA(Copy OTA.zip to your PC and extract the recovery.img file inside the firmware.zip).

I'm very afraid to flash something wrong because everything went wrong with me. What version should I flash? I guess my phone is the International version (since I'm a brazilian and HTC don't sell phones here)
Thanks in advance.

I'm also a little bit confuse with all information. I've been tryng to solve my ROM problem about 2 days.
I have flashed the ARHD 21.0 on my phone but a lot of errors are happening (common ones like no Wi-fi and other more annoying like extended reboot time). I'm trying to get back to the stock ROM to perform a update of my firmware but I'm kind of very lost in the forum.

No I guess your phone is an International version, not because you're Brazillian but because your CID says "HTC__001" which is International. Like You no doubt read in the 2 posts just above yours, download a nandroid backup for your device and restore it via the correct custom recovery. I even put a link to the thread with the nandroid collection in my first post here!!!
Just download the nandroid for your device, it'll be the 1.54.401.x backup seeing as you're still on the 3.16bootloader. 3.18 was 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 is 3.19 so you're probably still on 1.54.401.x. Download the 1.54.401 backup and restore in custom recovery. Afterwards just flash back the stock recovery.img
Make sure recovery.img is in your adb folder and boot into bootloader and use fastboot flash recovery recovery.img <That'll give you stock recovery again and you can reboot back into OS and download/install and update the OTA/Firmware as it comes all the way to 3.28.401.6/7

Sorry man, but I did. I read the post before mine. But I like I said, I'm trying to do this about 2 days and everything went wrong, so I thought that the version HTC__Y13 could have a different procedure that HTC__001.
I'm not the kind of user that thinks the problem is just happening to him. I read a lot of things but seems that more I read, more doubt I get.
Anyway, thank you very much for the fast answer. I will try what you said. :good:
Just one doubt. My ROM is 4.4.4 and my bootloader is 3.16. Is this wrong?

Yes, the 4.4.4 ROM MUST have 3.28.xxx.x firmware in order to function properly. You're still on much older firmware which is why you have excessively long boot up times, wifi/data problems(Outdated radio) etc. In order for the ARHD 21.0 to work correctly you must be on the correct firmware(4.4.4 android version, 3.28.401.6/7 <<<If you're international version which you are). This has been the case for some time now, you can do an easy google search "htc one m8 xda ..." along with something like "slow boot up" etc and you'll see that all of them had the same problems, outdated firmware.
Which is why you'll have to go back to stock and do the OTA updates as it comes. If you were S-OFF you could have done it manually and flashed the firmware manually but since you're S-ON you can't do it. Flashing Radio firmware you'll need to either be a) S-OFF or b) Official HTC OTA.

Thanks man! I'm now on 3.28.401.6.
Before your post, I hadn't understood that I needed restore from 1.54.401.x backup (I almost restore 3.28.401.7).
Firewater didn't work in my device, so I have to pay $25 to be S-OFF (and $25 is a lot of money when converting to reais - currency of Brazil)
I will come back tomorrow to give you Thanks (reach my max today).
PS: The 3.28.401.7 update didn't arrive to my device.
Confused!!!
I'm really confused!! I'm not that hardcore at all..
All i want is to update from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4 so I can Update from ViperOne 2.5 to 3.0.
I tried to flash a Stock Recovery called "stock_recovery_1.54.401.5_recovery.img" and I think it succeeded. Hard to see a difference. But I followed a guide made by Sakitech on Youtube. Then I searched for any updates. But it said "No update currently available". So I just flashed the custom Recovery again.
Sorry.. But I'm a Dummy
I am having some major issues too. Im just wanting to go back to stock so I can use sunshine to S-off my phone. My CID is ORANG001 so i got a nandroid backup 1.54.61.5 which is the correct stock and the corresponding stock recovery, all went well but not only does Sunshine still refuse to work, if i take any OTA updates, the first installs ok but then my wifi wont work, ie the switch will not turn green it just goes grey, any ideas!!?!!?

I think I can help you. After all my mistakes, I think I have learn something.
To update to 4.4.4 (and for ViperOne 3.0) you need to update your firmware first. To do that, you have 3 options:
1) S-OFF and update your firmware by flashing a simple file.
2) S-ON and search your EXACTLY modelid and cidnum on this thread
3) -That one BerndM14 help me in previous posts - Check your firmware and return your phone (ROM and Recovery) to stock basing on firmware version. This post explain better.
Like BerndM14 said to you, it is just necessary you to download any x.xx.401.x backup AND any x.xx.401.x stock recovery. After that, follow the instructions of the second question of the post. You will unzip the backup and inside, find a file called 'boot.emmc.win' or 'boot.win'. You have to flash this (fastboot), do a full wipe and then restore the backup (custom recovery). After all you return to bootloader (rebooting) and flash the recovery with this:
fastboot flash recovery <recoveryName>
That it. At least, what I understand. Any advanced user could confirm this informations?

I think S-OFF let the things much more easier. My m8 is S-ON so I don't know a lot of this, but there is some tutorial about firewater. If this tool doesn't work for you (like happen to me), you will have to pay $25 for Sunshine. From what I read, this method is guaranteed to get S-OFF.
With S-OFF, you will find some posts with updates of the firmware. So you don't have to go back to stock to update it.
To continue from where you stop, you have to follow this post. Like I said before, download any x.xx.401.x backup AND any x.xx.401.x stock recovery and follow the instructions of "How do i restore the stock nandroid backup" question (same post).
You don't flash the major stock backup zip file. You RESTORE it, on your custom recovery (TWRP or Philz) according from which recovery the backup was made (for example, if you download this one: 1.54.401.5 - TWRP Thanks to Fisha21. This backup was made on TWRP so you have to restore it on TWRP. But before restore, you need to flash the "boot.img or boot.emmc.win" file that is INSIDE this backup zip file. After that you make a full wipe in recovery and then RESTORE the major backup (remember, you don't restore the zip file, you have to unzip it on your phone like is said on the "How do i restore the stock nandroid backup" question of the post).
After all, you will flash the recovery of the same version that you download on the same post.

You looked your firmware version, befere restore the 1.54.61.5 version? You have to check the CID AND the main version of your phone, like it said on the beggining of the post:
Take the main version number and CID and check if it exists in the collection below ! If it doesn't you can always make a request here.

Because I'm at work and can't check to be 100% sure I know its definitely 2.26.61.* just not sure what the last number is. Feel like I have ended up with a phone that is going to be stuck in its current state forever now, can't upgrade, can't downgrade. What a mess

That's where I got the stock nandroid from, orang001 1.54.61.5 TWRP. Got the matching recovery, all flashed correctly but then like you say after a OTA my WiFi stopped working, mobile data is fine. The WiFi toggle in settings, won't switch over to green, just goes grey.

I Flashed a file named boot.emmc.win from inside the unzipped backup. I moved the file to my adb_fastboot folder and flashed it this way: fastboot flash recovery boot.emmc.win
Then I had trouble gaining access to custom recovery (TWRP) so I tried flashing the custom recovery again. I got in! Made a full wipe, chose "install", twrp > BACKUPS > Serialnumber > Backup.zip. But it failed!!!!! It was missing a md5 file???
I'm starting to regret all this root-mess

Help with Updated to Sense 4.4.4?

I'm keen to grab one of the new 4.4.4 Sense-based ROMs (insertcoin or viper), but it would seem that I need to somehow update my firmware.
Problem is, I can't figure out how to do it on my device. I tried using Firewater, but it gives me a 'whelp' messsage and can't S-OFF me, and I can't find an updated version of my firmware to flash.
Can anyone help me? I'm a little lost now I think. I'm using an NZ Vodafone M8, getvar is below. I'm currently running VanirAOSP and TWRP recovery.

My bad on the first link I was driving and shouldn't have even been looking at my phone.have you made any backups of Roms ever?
You need the the backup directory in your file manager so you can place the extracted backup file in it.
If you don't have the any backup of any ROM than boot to your custom recovery and make a backup of the ROM your on now .when backup completes than reboot to your regular system and go into your root browser so you can place extracted backup file in backup folder .
Boot to recovery again and make sure the backup exists when you tap restore,if you have two backups and you notice the one you placed is one of them than you should be good , restore the backup like you would any other backup

As you've somewhat figured out, current ROMs are likely going to give you issues due to your outdated firmware (hboot, radio, etc.).
Best bet is to run the Verizon MM RUU (will wipe the phone, so backup anything you want to keep to removable SD or off the phone, before RUU).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/official-ruu1-55-605-2-t2883845
From there, you can install TWRP and current ROMs, and I would recommend sticking to ROMs that specifically support the VZN version M8.

You don't need to flash 4.4.4. But that does make me remember one thing, the MM (6.0) RUUs have a new requirement, where you can't go from a past version to MM, unless you manually flash the MM firmware first.
So if you get Error 155 or 159 flashing the MM RUU; you'll need to find and flash the matching (6.21.605.3) firmware zip first, then RUU.
Either that, or just run the Lollipop RUU, for which the current MM ROMs should still work fine (with LP firmware).
Another possible approach, is to just find the 6.21.605.3 firmware, flash it, then install TWRP and a ROM (since its really just the firmware we need, anyway).

Yours is a LRA device and as far as I know there is no Marshmallow update for your device version.
The latest update is Lollipop 4.21.512.4
I suggest you install 4.21.512.4 RUU then check for OTA to see is there any further update to Marshmallow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66044439&postcount=37
Once your firmware is updated to 4.21.512.4, that's good enough for you to install Marshmallow custom ROM, of course you need to use one with VZW support.
I read before flashing a VZW firmware on a LRA device may break your network unless you flash it without VZW rcdata.img

Good to know. Thanks for that, as I was not aware.
I realized the device was LRA from the "512" version number, but figured it would be okay to flash VZN firmware, since OP has SuperCID.
Moral of the story: do as ckpv5 says!

Thanks again. I used to use Samsung phones and flashing new roms was really easy. I do not understand what RUU is on HTC. Can anyone give me the links and instructions that I need to follow? I just want to use Marshmallow on my phone. Because of this cellular data issues and my current rom and other parameters I do not what i am going to do.
By the way, thank you so much for your helps.

RUU = ROM Update Utility. Its a HTC tool that will update/rewrite all partitions to stock factory condition (and will wipe the phone).
The link is already given, as well as instructions; although they are brief ones. If you have specific questions on the process, ask and we will help.

A bit too late, but could you please help me out? I'm running 4.4.4 (version 3.31.512.2) and I want to update to Lollipop and eventually to Marshmallow. As you mentioned, there is already a link given and I have downloaded it. The issue is I don't have an SD card atm and would like to know an alternate approach.

You can follow this guide but use your downloaded RUU zip (not the one in the guide)

Thank you so much. I figured there's no official Marshmallow update for my device, I'd be grateful if you could recommend me a custom ROM that's more or less identical to the official version

That's hard for me to recommend because I have a GSM but yours is a LRA. You can only install ROM with Verizon support.
Maybe for a start, this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-4-17-605-9-stock-resources-firmware-t3196906
Just note that you can install ROM but not the firmware.

I am actually now getting around to updating. I just want to know some things if you could help me with
1. If I install the firmware first, would my boatloader lock? Or can I just not do this process at all?
2. Can I install this ROM with the stock recovery?
3. Will not installing the firmware affect anything at all?
Sorry for n00b questions, I might be overcomplicating things here
My responses below, in red.

No, firmware won't lock the bootloader.
2. Can I install this ROM with the stock recovery?
No, you need custom recovery TWRP.
3. Will not installing the firmware affect anything at all?
To be clear I do think you need to RUU up to Lollipop first, then install the MM ROM. From there, I don't think you need MM firmware.

Presumably you (or somebody else) used the sunshine app to s-off. If so, you should be able to use the sunshine app again without paying. Sunshine can unlock the bootloader, since its already s-off.

Hi, I just bought this great phone, and I need your help, I want to install MM, my HTC is the European Version Model OP6B100, Android 4.4.4, firmware 3.31.512.2, It is S-OFF, is unlocked, rooted and I have install TWRP, and I successfully Installed a Custom Marshmallow but after reboot just go straight to Bootloader, It does not load the ROM, I read and I understood We cannot jump from KITKAT to MM, I also installed LP but same happened. Help me to install LP and then LP, by the way ROMs I used were HD revolution.
Thanks in advanced.
