So my Galaxy S3 has become slow over time. I noticed about a few weeks ago how my keyboard simply got deleted and dissapeard of my device.. so I had to go into the google store to download another one - not sure if this is even related to my slowness.
However, I have found the device has become slow. It simple takes a while to load APPS, even when typing and just doing other tasks. I've actually disabled the stuff under developer options that I have found on this forum but it made minimal differences. Also I close out all my APPS using the task manager.
I am not rooted and running stock rom. Currently it has 4.1.2 running. If I were to root the device, can I;
1) Backup my stuff beforehand so when I return I can get my game progress etc. back?
2) Will rooting it make a difference?
Thanks in advance.
You will have to buy titanium backup, but worth every penny.
And yes rooting makes a vast difference in speed, stability, and just about everything else.

Thanks for the reply.
I did some research and apparently the Carbon Backup APP from the playstore is able to do backups without having root access. So I was actually able to back up my phone with that I guess..
Now, what would you recommend installing once its rooted? What rom?
Its a matter of preference. You have 3 choices. Aosp, touchwiz, or miui. After that it's just preference. All aosp is more or less the same. Same goes for tw. Just different settings or features in each version

Is touchwiz the one that comes stock on the Galaxy S3?
Yes. But there are different uhh... "Flavors" of touchwiz

Specifically for #2, yes rooting can making a huge difference.
Generally there are either TouchWiz (Name of Samsung's "skin" atop Android on the S3) roms that have huge amounts of customization like Hyperdrive or a debloated and "lighter" rom for better battery life, less lag, etc. On the other side, AOSP or stock Android can come in many different forms, 100% bone stock, All-in-One Roms like PAC, or simpler roms like CM 10.2 or AOKP. I prefer AOSP based roms a lot more than the TouchWiz roms because they generally seem very snappy and give me more internal space too!
AOSP Roms I Recommend:
Bam Rom (not on XDA) http://get.bam-android.com/
Task 650's AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Best one IMO: Quantum by pwncakes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390147
Hope this helps!
I use the S3Rx rom myself and really enjoy it. It is touchwiz baised and is silky smooth. I also put it on my wife's S3 and she has not had any problems. Cheers.

Thanks for the advice
I just flashed the Infamous GE 4.4.2 Rom on my tmo S4 and keep getting this error message when my phone boots:
"Unfortunately SAPedometerSettingProvider has stopped"
I'm also unable to install the Samsung App Store app or get notifications on my watch.
I also got an error message about this app that is not found or can't run:
com.samsung.android.notiprovider..... (don't remember the rest, but looks like the notification service)
I'm guessing that i'm missing some samsung bloatware but not sure.
Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?
Would returning to the stock firmware possibly fix this?
Some custom roms like Wicked 10 support using galaxy gear. I'd flash one of those if I had galaxy gear.

I just read the thread and they say it syncs with the phone (which the infamouse GE kitkat ROM also does) but some of the apps i want like svoice and notifications don't work and won't work because of the framework.
so i guess the best option to get everything working is the stock ROM?
Anyone know how to fix this on the custom roms?

Okay, it's a stand alone mod that flashes S5 apps over your current S4 settings and apps. What recovery do you use? Did you wipe dalvik/cache? I'm assuming you didn't make a backup before attempting this? Of course not, well you could always flash a custom ROM over this to fix or flash a stock ROM. If you want the S5 settings(you obviously do since you attempted this) I suggest trying out Insane KitKat in the Android development section of the T-Mobile s4. The dev has given you a choice to flash his ROM with s5 settings and even some apps including the browser, download booster, the calculator, etc. Let me know what you end up doing.

So I just flashed the zip, wiped cache and still got a force close. I do not want to flash a rom because I have 3 gigabytes of space left, and soon I plan to do the jump program and get the htc m8. Is there any other tips you can possibly give. Thanks so far

You're device is rooted, you've already tripped your flash counter. This would be void through JUMP unless you go back to complete stock using one of the tutorials here on XDA. I'm glad you mentioned that because I am a employee for T-Mobile. When you bring in the device, we'd do a software check. It checks the build, baseband, kernel, and flash counter. So what you really need to do at this point is return to full stock

Why would you even want aosp on this phone? Stock (+xposed) is sssoo much better than any custom Rom is...especially as far as stability is concerned. You lose so man features when on aosp...just to say your on a custom Rom.

Whatever floats your boat. I Just doesn't make sense to me personally, since aosp doesn't offer anything stock doesn't, especially with xposed modules. But if that's you like go for it

with cm i can run the full fledged google now with it right on the left hand side of the homescreens, also have voice activated ok google from the homescreen. these are features i use often. the only thing i truly enjoyed from stock lg was the built in wireless storage, however i have an app that does the same thing and actually speeds seem to be better than the lg for transfers. Everyone has their flavors, hence why both are offered by developers.
EDIT: also my google play all access music works flawlessly on aosp, where on stock lg 4.4.2 it shuts off after a few songs.

You can use the voice activated ok google with the Google home launcher. I use it now exactly the way you mention on stock. And i don't have any Google play issues ever and i use play music all the time. But like i said it's your phone so you have the freedom to do with it whatever you feel.

Yes. The interfaces are completely different. I have not used it enough to say more than that but just Google search "old snote vs new snote" and you will find comparisons/changes.
If you want to try it out there is a way to install the new one and still have the old one running and switch between them both. Check the app section. If you flash a custom rom like civato's he has the new one (note 3/note 10.1 2014) incorporated into the rom.
