Hey guys sorry to be a total noob but we all have to start somewhere. I have preordered the evo from RS and this will be my first smart phone. I really have no exp with aps or what these phones can do.
I guess what I am wondering is what is rooting and why is it useful.
Thanks again in advance. I apologize for my ignorance on this topic.

Rooting is basically hacking your phone.
It is useful to get super admin permission. Allow's you to customize your phone more and remove carrier app that you may not want. There is alot more stuff but I am new myself to Android.
Basically it's useful for removing crapware. It's kind of like when you buy a Dell computer and it comes with useless programs that may be really good but you find no use for. You can also edit things such as wallpapers and enable hidden menu options for features.
Rooting gives you literally UNLIMITED access to the software operating system on the computer.
When compared to a Windows computer think of your default phone as a Guest account. You can generally use everything but anything important can't be deleted or modified, which also prevents you from pretty much modifying anything at all.
Once you gain Root you're on the Administrators account, you can edit anything you want, move, delete, & in general do whatever you'd like with the device. Sometimes this can introduce risk to unexperienced users -- Think about what would happen if you deleted your entire sys32 folder on Windows...you'd break something.
That is the best explaination of rooting that I have read...thank you! Very simple to understand when put into the Guest/Admin scenario.
thanks ohwut that really puts it in perspective !
you also get wifi tethering and can overclock
still no video on how to perm root your g2???
come on guys!!!
help out all the visual learners
its one of the most simple rooting processes out just read the instructions its not hard
yea if i can root it while sitting at work, anyone can... dont need a video to see how its done, its pretty simple.
I too am a visual learner as well, but give it time. Root was obtained 2 days ago and it is like a new toy at christmas. Those who worked on obtaining root are working on the next step and those who manually rooted their phones are now in that happy place we all remember from our youth.
Good things come to those who wait, patience is a virtue...all that good stuff.

honestly man if you cant read simple steps laid out then you dont need to root. this is one of the easiest rooting directions. (try rooting samsung moment)
Its not that I can't read simple steps, this is my first time rooting a device, I don't know even where to start
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I would also like a video. I know it is a simple process but I would like to see it done before I try it myself. I would hate to eff up my phone because of a little mistake I made. I did all kinds of stuff to my G1 but that's the only phone I have experience with.

If you can't root with the instructions then you shouldn't be rooting at all. Very simple root. I did it at work as well on my lunch break.
[G2/HTC Vision]
I am not trying to be rough on the OP. I too like videos to show me how things work. But please understand that the act of making the video, hosting the video, posting the video link would take about twice as long as actually rooting the phone.
Go here and follow the directions.
If you don't have ADB and need to install it go here and follow the directions.
If you need the driver for the G2 after you've installed ADB go here. All of that is simple to do if you just read the directions. If you can't be bothered to simply read the directions then I can't really help you. This is the rage root technique, not the Visionary. I tried rooting my phone via Visionary and it didn't work so I just went the manual method and it worked flawlessly.
Wow...the nerve to make a thread like this. Not only was the root finding process long, but everyone involved was kind enough to share it with everyone and within hours there were easy to follow threads on how to root the phone.
You "don't know where to start"? C'mon now...you can't seriously tell me that you cannot follow:
Download files
Push files
Type commands
Rooted
Do you need a video to do your job as well? Did you need (or do you need) a video to follow a class in school? Sorry if I'm being an assh0le, but geez...seriously.
Not to mention the video might not be incredibly exciting. Seriously, there's not a whole lot to it that would require a video tutorial. You're just moving files and typing in a few things (carefully) and you're done.
I thought about it but don't really want unroot just to root again for a tutorial.

adb + mac + rooting
A very helpful and straightforward post on how to set up/run adb on a mac for all you mac users out there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5938688&postcount=9
Once you've managed to run adb, the rest is pretty easy as long as you read through it carefully.
Type in: 'adb --help' to get a list of commands you can put in. If you read through it you should see all the commands you need to get started in rooting your phone. Is all you really need to know like xyrcncp posted is:

The above combined with the instructions on how to root will help you get to the finish line.
Still confused on this whole 'push' concept?
Here are two references that might help:
From the Android developers site: Android Debug Bridge (adb)
and
From androidforums.com: How to push for dummies
I hope that helps, even if it isn't a video. I suggest people read through the instructions before they attempt to root their phones just so they're familiar with what they need to do.
Check out my Youtube channel, I have a video up now.

The "helpful" part was us sending the message across that "it's easy to do and not worth the effort for a video." Which I'd also bargain was "constructive" as we weren't insulting, bashing, or doing personal attacks.
But now that someone took it upon themselves to make a video, the OP and visual learners should be happy.

Look I know it can get annoying and repeatative but still this is what was so great about xda that a noob can come in here ask questions and get pointed in the right direction without ridicule or being made to feel stupid or inferior everyone of us was a beginner once and has asked stupid questions anyways thank you sooo much to all of the helpful peeps in here ur appreciated

Hey Guys,
well wiki and sticky are up - so lets gather more information
If u got some ideas of missing topics - just add them or post it here...
thanks for helping Piratetris, XHale931
OLD:
got my Xperiay Play since Friday.
Since I searched and found a lot of information since that day, I wondered why we dont have a propper complilation... like the ones im used to have from other devices.
Since this thread is not maintained anymore and its hard to updated it all by one person alone I thought about using the wiki wich is totaly underrated here at XDA anyway.
So I added a picture and started creating the WIKI page for our beloved device - wich didn't exist yet
Since im quite new here and I propably don't know all the things and my time is very limited atm - any help is welcome - feel free to add your favourite content and correct all the mistakes and typing mistakes I did
e.g. add the hardware specs,...
Please keep the structure clean and don't go into detail too much so it doesn't get blown...
@Mod: would be nice if this got pinned since many people really don't know and use the wiki at xda atm
editing as we speak :]
Stuck it
Good idea, keep it growing
Best, DK
Great Job.
Fixed phone models and colors. Fixed a crap ton of spelling errors so it actually looks decent. Fixed false information.
Good job. Keep it going.
Excellent job on the wiki!
Would like to see maybe a table of ROM versions and which phones they are compatible with.
do u seach users, helping u with that?
If you need any help with Wiki clean ups, I have a fair knowledge of making them look good. I was and still am an admin for the EQ2Emulator wiki (;
Amazing!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks.
Nice. I've added and will add to it.
nice !! thanks
I'm going to contribute to the page a bit
Great job. Let's make it grow
EDIT: Sigh. Never mind.
All this talking I was doing about the kernel update, it was just because of a very simple thing I did not understand until today:
*** If your ROM update includes a new boot.img file, then UPDATE THE DAMN boot.img IN YOUR PHONE AGAIN, using flashtool or whatever tool you used before.
My apologies for being that slow.
xperia play is really good but some of glu mobile games is not compatible and the screen is LCD but its great
So if I unlock the bootloader, install a ROM and then I install the stock ROM and re-lock the bootloader Sony still will know that my xPLay was once unlocked?¿
Official Method
If you unlock your bootloader using the official SE method, even if you relock it, they will always know.
I heard if you unlock it with the S1 tool method you could relock it again without any problems.

This is awesome Gary.
I've always been an Android Tweaker; I've enjoyed messing around with on my I9000m and playing around with kernels. I'm a fourth year computer engineering student and I really wanted to bridge the gap between being a power-user and being a developer.
When I was thinking about getting a new phone I decided whatever that phone was I wanted to develop on it.
So it's great that you're doing this, and I really appreciate the effort you've put into this project. Thanks a bunch and all the best in this endeavour!
Random thoughts (as related to this HOWTO)...
It might interest people to know that I don't type those posts online. I actually spend hours typing them offline in a plain ASCII editor (notepad if I'm on a Win7 machine), try to proofread them for making sense, and try to ensure that they'll make sense to most people who are technically inclined enough to want to do this type of thing. (Let's face it - non-geeks really have no interest in compiling their own kernel.)
These posts literally take hours for me to do. The first post took about 6 hours, and the second took about 4. I'm hoping as I move away from "communication" things and more into "technical" things, I'll be able to do those posts more quickly. However, the simple fact of life is that I'm NOT a teacher, so explaining things to other people is hard for me. Very hard. (That's probably why I get so irritated when people ignore instructions and/or explanations that I've taken pains to write; and then ask stupid questions.)
I also don't have a full "plan" together. While I'm typing one post, I usually have a good idea of what the following post will be discussing, but I really don't have a good "plan" beyond a very high level concept of the overall thing. I know (or think I know) what I'll need to eventually discuss, but as I'm typing one thing, I might suddenly realize that I'm going to have to back up and cover a topic I hadn't considered.
That usually opens another can of worms for me, as I long ago stopped thinking about some of these things... they just are there in my head, but when I stop to try and explain them, I realize I've forgotten how they got in my head to begin with. We all know that "4 plus 4 equals 8." However, when was the last time you asked yourself WHY 4+4=8. We know it to be true, but try to explain WHY it's true to someone who doesn't already know it. It's not as easy as it sounds (and I have young children to prove it.)
The next post I'm writing is on git and github. It will have the steps for setting up a github account, forking an existing kernel project, accessing github from a build machine, and getting the source from github to that build machine. It's not as easy to do this as I first thought it would be. The first question is "what is github?" The next question is "why?"
I think an important sidebar for that would be something reinforcing the whole "open" aspect of the linux kernel. That's a really important concept for this HOWTO... without open aspect, none of this would be possible. We wouldn't have the kernel source to compile, and we wouldn't have the wisdom and knowledge of so many people who've contributed to work from. It's also something I feel strongly about (which is amusing when you consider that I feed my family by working on closed source code.)
Perhaps I should post these random comments over the weeks it'll likely take for me to do this entire "HOWTO." Writing the HOWTO is forcing me to think about communicating development. Writing these random thoughts is making me think about how I think.
I'll end this post with a challenge: We know the sky is blue. Imagine trying to explain and document that to someone... who is colorblind.
Take care
Gary
posts 3 and 4 added to the main HOWTO thread. #3 is me preaching about open source and #4 gets you started with github/git and has you forking/cloning a copy of the kernel source.
By the way, while I appreciate those who want to press my "thanks" button, you might consider NOT pressing it for a post containing only the text of "reserved."
When I edit that "reserved" post to fill it in with something, you might not appreciate that your name is below the post thanking it.
In other words, if your name is JohnDoe and you "thank" a "reserved" post, and then I edit that post to contain the text "JohnDoe is an iDiot", you'll appear to have thanked me for calling you an idiot.
Hey gary, quick question for ya if you dont mind. In the second post of your how to thread, when we download the pre-builts you have us type this command
" cd
git clone https://android.googlesource.com/platform/prebuilt"
Im just a tad bit confused by the cd part. Are we supposed to be changing directories into something? Or can we do this from the home folder?
Thanks
Clint
Edit: went ahead and followed my gut instinct. Made a folder called n2k. Cd to that folder and then got pre builts. Hope I was correct on that lol.

The "cd" command without any parameters changes directory into your "home" directory on the linux machine.
Then, running the git clone command would have created a subdirectory in your home directory called "prebuilt."
Later, we'll need to reference that directory to tell the "make" program where the toolchain is.

It wasn't correct, but its certainly not the end of the world. You can either undo that step and do it again so that your system matches what the HOWTO will describe, or you can adjust the instructions in the HOWTO to match what you've done.
If you choose the former, the following steps should undo what you've done by completely wiping out that "n2k" folder:
Code:
cd
rm -rf n2k
At that point, you can redo the two commands for getting the prebuilt.
If you choose the latter option (to adjust the instructions), you'll want to look out for any strings in my HOWTO that start with $HOME/prebuilt and change them to "$HOME/n2k/prebuilt".
Take care
Gary
I've added the following test to the beginning of post #2:
A short note: There might be some confusion about the use of the "cd" command without any parameters found in a few places. These are intentional, and have the effect of "change to the user home directory." I often use these before creating a new directory to ensure I'm creating it in a "known" location.
Click to collapse
That should help with any confusion about "cd".
Awesome. I just did the rm -rf n2k and started over. It didnt take very long. Thanks again:thumbup:
Im all caught up now:beer: excellent guide gary

I haven't seen any complaints about it, but I had a typo about 2/3rds of the way down in post #4. When pulling the kernel code from github to your PC, I mistakenly provided the command as
Code:
https://github.com/yourUserName/linux_kernel_sgh-i317.git
..when it should have been
Code:
git clone https://github.com/yourUserName/linux_kernel_sgh-i317.git
(I didn't have the "git clone" in the command.) That's been corrected. Oddly, I didn't have that error in notepad or I'd have noticed it when I walked through the steps myself. I guess it was a cut/paste error.
Yes, I do walk through the steps myself. I've even created an extra github account JUST to have a clean working space to ensure things work properly. (I hope the github folks don't mind.)
The next post should be coming up shortly and will actually compile the kernel for the first time.... for what it's worth.

Next time, SAY SOMETHING. (well, you don't have to say it.. but please at least type it.) If people don't point out to me when I'm wrong, I'll just keep assuming I'm perfect.
When they do point out what's wrong, I have to admit to being imperfect for at least the amount of time it takes me to fix the error.
Regarding git, have you considered linking people to
try.github.com
For a tutorial, or even just for your own benefit (if as you mentioned you're not too hot on git)
I'm not amazing at git but it looked interesting when I had a play.

thanks Gary, this is great! are you strictly interested in kernel development or would you consider writing other guides as well? or, would you be willing to offer less structured advice in return for others using it to write guides of their own?

Actually, writing guides isn't something I ever planned on doing. For me, it's more about sharing information than writing guides. I'm more proficient at kernels, so I have more information to share about it.
As for offering advice on writing guides, I'm probably the last person on this Earth that would be qualified to offer that kind of advice. I'm a horrible teacher. In the case of the kernel stuff, I'm just kind of guessing my way though. I think I posted in this thread how difficult it was for me.

First, this isn't a Note 2 forum it's an S3 forum, nor is it a support forum those two pieces of software.
Second, maybe your device isn't full rooted, it has root but has a system remount issue and that's why it's failing.
Third, No money is to exchange hands through XDA except for proper donations through dev's that have contributed enough to have a donate button on their sig.
