Top half of screen is running hot anyone else experience this?
It's happening to me too... When I use my gnex a lot or watching a video or playing a game it turns hot the top part of my screen. It usually happens when I have low battery or when I use it while charging. Does anyone know why this happens?

Its where the cpu is located. So you are probably using cpu intensive applications. Try to undervolt or underclock to keep it cooler.

What are the safest/recommended levels to undervolt in trickster mod and should each MPU level be tweaked individually OR is it OK/better to adjust all MPU levels by a certain degree?
try flashing one of the kernels (4.3/4.4 franco ) and they have all that taken care of.
Where can I find the franco kernel? And is it compatible with pa 4.4 beta1

Well manual undervolt induvidually is the best of course. But it takes very very long.. I always undervolt -50 for all the mpu voltages. See if -75 works but not a lot of gnexus can do that.

There are no downsides. In fact it extends the life span of your cpu. Only undervolting too much will cause instability. So just check. Maybe do some sort of torture test..

Luckily had a 5 sec window to uninstall trickster mod before undervolting settings were applied.
Going to try -50 this evening, I need a functioning phone during work time.

Tegrak probably won't work properly if I'm correct set cpu or oc/uv beater should be fine. Tegrak was used for samsung processors. Qualcomm processors are able to scale better at lower or higher frequencies.

It will never engage both cores that is asynchronous. Both processors work independently from each other. This is why you see lag. Both processors are never at their full potential. Qualcomm design the processors for best battery life in mind with good performance. There is a way to get both cores to be synchronized though if it matters to you. But expect worst battery life.

The one we have should also overclock very nicely. The APQ8060 is the same one in the Touchpad and that one easily does 1.9Ghz.

Yes. But you would need a kernel that supports Overclocking and Undervolting.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
First off I would like to say no disrespect to others who have had scripts for overclocking the GPU for 3D and 2D graphics. After thoroughly dissecting the phone the 2D graphics never really get overclocked. If you check sys/devices/platform/kgsl0 or kgsl1 gpuclk files both will always say 200000000 the minimum. So the 2D part 228751000 from other scripts never really works. I found a way to keep it at max all the time 3D at 320000000 and 2D at 228751000 using int.d script . So for anybody who wants the GPU-OC script that really works try it out. Just flash and reboot that's it 2D will stay at 228751000 and 3D will stay at 320000000 at all times. Runs like a champ on my phone. You be the judge if you works for you or not.

I was just sitting here thinking that my battery had been draining much faster lately. Trying to connect the dots. Anything that overclocks... whether it be your processor or your gpu will get hotter because it takes more voltage which causes more heat. I just flashed this to check it out, but I would imagine the battery life is going to decrease since the clock speeds are going up. Speed comes at a price.
Just an update. I uninstalled the script and battery lasted about twice as long. Phone didn't burn my hand during Dead Trigger either.

that's what it's supposed to do. part of the "project butter" tweaks for jelly bean included this type of CPU jump when performing a task. that instant jolt to the maximum device GHz helps make doing everything on the phone more fluid/fast.
to get better battery on your device and troubleshoot whether this feature is hurting you specifically more than helping, feel free to adjust your max speed. start low, at say 1GHz, then bump it up a hundred at a time to find out where your phone is the most comfortable.

Can we maybe explain it as having a device that just run's hot ? It was my first inclination.
OP, maybe I glanced over it at first but you stated you have used many rom's and kernels and got the exact same response on all the ones you used ?
Did you you try going back to stock rooted and seeing how it was from there ? A completely clean slate might be your best idea. The only way a device will get hot is is more power is being used to keep the processor at higher temperatures. There really isn't any other way or than faulty hardware issue.

its not a price tag. its a script set to take advantage and make the most of the hardware on your phone. as soon as the task has begun, the CPU speed drops immediately.

I almost always use ondemand governor. In my humble opinion nearly all the other ones are inefficient or just placebo's. My phone runs streaming radio 4-5 hours a days on LTE and it never gets hot. Stays at around 918mhz at the highest. There a few bugs in 4.1.1 like the media server scanning where it will constantly scan your media because of a bad file.
Odin stock rooted 4.1.1 and then see how it goes. Factory reset it and erase /data or move to to pc or ex sd card. Won't take long and if it still does it I can't see what it would be.
How to prevent it?
How to stop it?

I use SetCpu to maintain kernel settings, I keep max speed to 1.3 ghz and min to 162mhz, and under it there is a spot to undervolt, I do -50 on that... thats pretty much it, governor is "ondemand" and scheduler is "cfq"
It's natural for this phone to get hot. It's only overheating when its shutting itself off or acting strange once it gets hot.
It's normal for the cpu temps to go to the 70C range when doing heavy applications.
I would recommend a custom ROM, with KT's Kernel. The Custom ROMS normally offer a much debloated solution with some minor optimizations which does reduce background tasks on the phone allowing the CPU to run at lower frequencies which helps maintain a cooler temperature.
KT's Kernel also has several options such as undervolting, lowering max frequencies, governors, and tweaks that also will help keep the CPU running cooler. Altogether you get extra battery life, a cooler phone, less garbage that you have just sitting on your device.
If you want to stay stock, that's fine, but it's normal to get hot to the touch.
As Monkz said, is completely normal. If you're playing an online game or
one that has good graphics, it's bound to be hot.
I'm thinking of flashing a different kernel to my Samsung Galaxy Nexus so I can overclock the CPU/GPU. I've noticed that franco.Kernel and Trinity seem to be among the most popular kernels, but I'm not sure which one to choose. In your opinion, what is the best kernel for overclocking and why? FWIW, I have the Verizon model of the phone (toro) and am currently running CyanongenMod 4.1.2, which is based off of Android 4.2.2.

I'll have to give it a try... Also, what app should I use for benchmarking? As you can see I'm new to the whole overclocking thing lol

Antutu or CF bench are good apps.. And a warning: overclocking will decrease the life of your phone! Be careful! If you want to use your phone a little longer I wouldn't do it (I wouldn't anyway because I think this phone is very fast especially with Android 4.3)..

Try It And See. TIAS.. GlaDOS kernel can overclock to 2.0 GHz.. The highest I ever saw. But my phone didn't like it. As for the rest you just have to try and see which kernel suits you best.

Hi,
I've decided to bump this thread because all other GNex OC threads are very dated.
I recently received the extended battery 200mah and I'm ready to overclock. I wish to retain battery life to have screen time 3-4 hour on moderate usage.
I'm current rooted on stock ROM, and I wish to simply stay with stock ROM provided battery life will remain the same (perhaps I have to undervolt)
I want to hit 1.5GHz CPU and 384MHz GPU...which is what the OMAP and PowerVR SoC's true default clocks.
Given my circumstances of stock ROM, which kernel would give me the best stability/battery life? Any kernel that somehow has OC settings built in or do they all require me to buy setCPU?

They all use setcpu or trickster mod. Regarding the kernel you just should try some out.

What type of OC are you running?
Do you actually notice it day to day usage? I cant think of any apps that could benefit from it besides gaming which I do very little of on mobile.
How has it affected your battery life?

I don't OC myself. I want my gnex to last some longer. OC will wear out tour CPU.. I die it once for a day maybe two but didn't notice any improvement. I was at 1.5 GHz or something.. I think it may have some speed improvements but your battery will drain like a maniac. If you don't game I suggest you underclock: even more battery life with no speed loss!!
