Anybody have bluetooth audio issues after 4.4.3 update? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

After the 4.4.3 update, when I play audio through a bluetooth speaker, it stutters every so often. It happens with both Google Play Music and Pocketcasts. When playing a video podcast through Pocketcasts, the audio will skip and get out of sync with the video. I've tried multiple bluetooth speakers and it happens on all of them. I haven't tried a factory reset or anything yet.
I saw a comment from another person with a similar issue on a blog post about the 4.4.3 update, but I haven't seen anything on xda yet. Is anyone else experiencing anything like this? I've also got a Nexus 5 and it seems to be fine after the 4.4.3 update.

yes, same stuttering with my nexus 7 2013. better than my bluetooth problems with 4.4.2 though, as that caused full dropouts and having to reboot the whole tablet.

That's the thing. I had zero problems with 4.4.2.

This has always been the case for me ever since owning this Nexus 7. But for me, this only happens when I'm connected to 802.11a 5Ghz wireless. When I'm connected to 802.11n 2.4Ghz, my Bluetooth seems fine. And the strange thing is that my stereo Bluetooth headset seems to me that it sounds better with more base and treble when connected to 802.11n vice 802.11a. It may be a placebo effect on my ageing ears, but none the less who wants the video mouth lag and stuff. So, I keep my Nexus on 2.4Ghz only in the WiFi advanced mode all the time now.

That's interesting. I just renamed my 5ghz SSID to be the same as my 2.4ghz. So maybe it wasn't the 4.4.3 update. I'm going to try forcing it to 2.4ghz. Thanks!

So after using it for a few hours on 2.4ghz, I can almost definitely say that the 5ghz was the problem. I don't have any audio stutters or video sync problems now.

Not sure if it may be a Nexus hardware problem from Asus or wireless router though. I'm using a DLink DIR850/AC1200 wireless router. So if your wireless router is different, than its probably a Nexus problem.

I was having problems as well as soon as I did the OTA update this morning. I've been connecting to a Bose Soundlink Mini for months without any issues before the 4.4.3 update. After the update, sound would stutter every 15 seconds or so, and sometimes stop playing entirely. Switching to 2.4 ghz seems to have fixed the problem. I have the Netgear R7000 router, so it's unlikely it's due to both our routers.
When I was connected to 5ghz, the problem was much worse when I opened a Wifi Analyzer app or browsed the internet. Thanks for the switching to 2.4ghz tip, you saved me a few frustrating hours. Already contacted Google and told them the issues, but it was before I tried connecting to 2.4ghz

I've got a Asus RT-AC66 router.

Same problem here. Nexus 5 connected to a Logitech Mobile UE Boombox. Was always working fine (with 4.4.2). Now with the update to 4.4.3 google music app stutters all the time. Really annoying. (AVM Fritzbox 7390 - but I don't want to go to 2.4 GHz). Haven't tried other music apps though...

Searched for "bluetooth audio skipping" and found this thread. This starting affecting me right after the 4.4.3 update, also.
I'll try forcing 2.4GHz and hopefully that fixes the issue.

Hi,
I just got a nexus 7 (2013) recently. I get the audio stutter when listening to Pandora using a pair of Samsung bliuetooth headphones on the nexus 7. Switching to my iPhone 6 plus, same headphones, no stutter.
The nexus 7 is running Android Lollipop 5.1.1.
It gets even worse! In addition to the stutter, the music also speeds up and slows down constantly. It's like listening to a record player with a bad motor that can't spin the same speed consistently. I'm really surprised, as this tablet appears to be awesome in every other way. The headphones I am using are Samsung Bluetooth noise canceling headphones.

[Q] Bluetooth tethering help?

Hi there... struggling a bit with this bluetooth tethering.
So I've done the bluetooth tethering thing before with other devices including my current Razr HD which I sometimes bluetooth tether to my ipad2. There it's a pretty straightforward process.
On the Nexus... not so much. I can get it working, but it's something that takes a little finagling; I have to re-pair the devices if I disconnect.
So after unpairing on my N7, I do the following to make BT tethering work.
1) Select the available device (my RAZR HD for BT tethering) to pair and connect
2) It'll show the pairing code on both devices... I hit pair on them relatively quickly... and then
3) Quickly hit the settings button for the RAZR HD on my N7 screen and select the internet access check mark option. This step has to happen within a few seconds.
If I wait longer than a few seconds after pairing, then if I try to do the internet access check mark... well, it won't work. It refuses to be check marked.
And, as I mentioned before... after disconnecting, I can't just reselect the device to retether; I have to unpair and go through the process again.
Maybe I'll do a video showing success or failure of this if this isn't too clear but... maybe someone can shed some light on this?
Okay... I just did a video of this, showing this thing both not working (by not selecting internet access quickly enough after pairing) as well as working at the end.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bYzvOHjtmQ
I'm having a similar issue with my S4...the Nexus doesn't even see the internet tethering profile and when I try to initiate it from the S4 side, it just goes to "connecting" and then stops.
Bluetooth tethering is working perfectly for me between the Nexus 7 (2013) and my Galaxy Nexus, both running 4.3.

Maybe it's a 4.3 -> 4.2 thing then. I wonder if this RAZR HD will get a 4.3 update anytime soon...
Still really disappointed that my ipad2 just works while the N7 doesn't...

WiFi Connection Lags Out

I have a Linksys E2000 router. For some reason my new Nexus 7 times out, lags out, or fails to connect when doing basic things like browsing with Chrome, Google+, or the Play Store. I don't want to say that this only occurs with Google apps but they are what I primarily use on my tablet. This happens often enough to be extremely bothersome and I don't know what I should do. I have port forwarding enabled on my router for use with Plex on my PS3 but I don't see how that could only be effecting my Nexus 7 negatively and no other devices. If anyone has any ideas as to what I could do I would greatly appreciate it!

A kernel is what bridges hardware and software including the WiFi. You can try flashing a custom kernel and/or ROM to fix your problem.

I'm having a similar issue. It's really annoying. I have an old router so I'm going to replace it and see if it gets better.
I have same issues with Linksys. Works great on other routers. I did a factory reset of the Linksys and it seems to be better.

Audio not synced with video when using Bluetooth

When using Bluetooth (LG tone) for audio, I am having problems with audio/video syncing on some apps i.e. Netflix. The audio lags the video stream by sometimes half a sec which makes the whole experience terrible. I tried different Bluetooth headsets and the problem is still there. When I use wired headphones the problem is gone.
I have read a few threads and this is a problem that exists in a variety of android devices (phones, tablets of different models/manufacturers). It also manifests itself in other video apps.
I did not see any solution to this but maybe I am missing something.
I guess I am wondering If anyone could verify this with their tablet.
Also, can anyone shed some light as to why this is happening?
Does anyone know of a solution?
Thanks!
Bluetooth in general is... Laggy. That's why, for example, PS3 Sony wireless headphones aren't bluetooth. In the case that you're only listening to music it's ok but for watching a video I would only use wired headphones or non-bluetooth wireless ones. Bluetooth is still evolving, for the best connection and audio quality you want to be wired. Remember that the less steps on the chain the better, qualitywise and "lagwise".

Use DICE player for local files as for Netflix I don't know . Dice player is free and perfect for any video files .
Yeah unfortunatly bluetooth is laggy on all devices. Lags on my S3 and Laptop and when I had an iPhone it was the same out of sync experiance. So in the end i just used it for listening to music and tbh they were great for that.
Will be class whenever they no longer have lag.. will happily pay some good money for some.
That's right but the problem aren't the headphones/devices, the problem is the bluetooth itself, the way it processes the data makes it laggy for real time stuff..

Same here. Thanks for your response. I understand that the bluetooth protocol is not meant for watching video but I don't understand why I can play the same movie on Netflix on my transformer prime tablet with the same bluetooth headset and have zero lag in sound. Same goes for my Nexus4 and yet I can't get it work properly on this tablet.

mmmm that is very very odd.
AHHHH I have just thought about this...What if you make the audio play a few milliseconds before the video or something maybe that could work....well it seems to work in my head haha, I dont have a Note 10.1 yet or even my Bluetooth headset with me otherwise I'd give it a go on my laptop.
Interesting... The note 2014 has bluetooth 4.0 which is the newest out there, hopefully a future firmware update will fix that...? (or maybe a Netflix update). Remember the note still has some flaws here and there. If you have NO lag in your transformer there should be a fix for that in ours... (more than no lag, synced correctly).
I know this isn't the answer you want, just my thoughts.

No Bluetooth isn't laggy by itself, that's ridiculous. What you're experiencing is caused by interference. The main culprit is usually Wi-Fi
My Sony Bluetooth Headphones don't lag one bit on any device. But one time while I had it on, playing the PS3 (with the Bluetooth controller) and connected to the internet via Wifi, I was experiencing audio lag. I turned off the wi-fi and went hardwired and the lag disappeared.
Try listening to you headphones via bluetooth on this device. But shut off wifi and listen to something that's on the storage. Tell me if it lags. If it doesn't then you'll know it's the wifi that's interfering and maybe we can remedy the situation by switching what channel you router uses for it's wifi signal so it doesn't interfere with whatever channel the Bluetooth is using.
Don't automatically assume that Bluetooth is laggy by nature and that's that. That's nonsense.

Every Sony PS3 headset is Bluetooth. Where do you guys get this misinformation that they avoid it? The only way Bluetooth will lag is if your headphones are using an old, slow profile or you're trying to pass heavy content over Bluetooth (and I mean HEAVY high quality content) or your environment is littered with interference.
You think my Sony MDR1RB, a $400 pair of cans, is a laggy by nature? No. Who would pay $400 for that? Why would Sony even make that?
And the Sony MDR1RB isn't even Bluetooth 4.0 it's 2.1

That was my initial thought. This is why I am using the 5GHz WiFi band since Bluetooth sits at 2.4GHz (same out of sync result). Also some streaming apps have no problem with audio sync i.e. Youtube, streaming from local NAS video and even streaming from Slingbox. I find it tough to swallow that it is a problem with the Bluetooth headphones since they actually work perfectly on my TF201 and Nexus4.
I think it is the actual implementation of the Bluetooth stack on the tablet that is at fault.

How you tried switching your wifi channel? There is an app on the Play store that scans your environment and shows you which channels are most congested. Search "wifi channel" and see which one looks best, I'm sure there are multiple ones.
As far as the implementation of the Bluetooth stack being at fault, if that was so, then wouldn't my Sony's lag as well? But the don't

Thanks for your response. This is actually really good info. Your Sony works with Netflix streaming with no lag issues on this Note??? If so maybe it is worth for me buying and trying one.
As far as the channel scanner, I used it and tried a few channels for my WiFi with no improvement. The higher end of the band i.e. ch11 is very clean. Anyway, I ended up going to 5GHz to at least ensure that there is no interference with the Bluetooth coming from my Wifi system.

Sorry but I'll have to disagree with vdc530, I'm not trying to be disrespectful or start a controversy here, but you are assuming that I'm assuming things. In my experience with bluetooth I found it most of the times laggy, that's why I said "in general", that doesn't mean "everything", (obviously because I don't have every single device/configuration). If you didn't have mayor lags so far or you found a way around it that's great and I mean it, and great you share it.
Not every Sony Headset/phones are bluetooth, http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Stereo-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B0053OLY9O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384458305&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+ps3+headphones , That's the one I was talking about, and I was assuming (I'm human) that Sony didn't make it bluetooth because it would overload the bluetooth on the PS3, that makes sense to me according to my bluetooth experience, and yes I can be wrong on that. Anyway at the end that's out of the main point here, so I don't want to expand on that.
I wouldn't say "nonsense" to something someone says, even if I know everything there is to be known about this or that matter, we can strongly disagree, explain our points and/or correct someone in a more polite way.
That's the beauty of a forum, I always make sure to specify if it's my knowledge, my thoughts or an assumption, i apologize if I didn't.

Update:
So I fished out my old Bluetooth Headset (Sony DR-BT22) that I bought back in 2009 for a mere £20 on a clearance sale, these headphones were the reason I said all Bluetooth lags since I tested it on a multiple different devices (S3, Iphone 3G and Laptop).....anyways so I decided to test them on the Note 10.1 just to test something I already know and that I need to invest in some expensive £70 ($110) Bluetooth headphones I have seen.
To my shock there is no lag whatsoever when using the DR-BT22 via Youtube or even while playing a video stored on the Note 10.1...AWESOME
I really have no idea why it works on my Note efficiently yet doesn't on other devices but I no longer care - I now have Wireless headphones for my Note 10.1 that I didn't even know worked haha. I always loved the foldaway design of these headphones and now I can actually utilise this on my travels.
Thanks vdc530 and spky818 I wouldn't have bothered trying my old ones if it wasn't for yous - saved myself some canny dosh :good:
I was watching BS player yesterday with wired headphones and I had lag in the audio caused by fast forwarding. The only way to get rid was to close the player and reload the movie after which it was perfect.
So is it Bluetooth or the player or a combination?

[Q] Chromecast & Nexus 7 Casting Problems

So I'm having issues with my Nexus 7 casting to my TV. I can cast fine if I have my tablet on and active but once I turn off the screen and set it aside, whatever I'm casting will only go for a minute or so before cutting off. It seems as if my WiFi is turning off and telling Chromecast to stop playing. I have already made sure to "Keep WiFi On Always" and also disabled "WiFi Optimization." The odd thing is that I do not have this issue with my HTC One.
I've tested this with Pandora, Songza, and Viki. I have also clean flashed stock OTA, CleanROM, and CM11. All no luck. The only solution I have found is to use an app called REGPON wifi KeepAlive. Does anyone else have a similar experience that can help me so that I'm not dependent on this app?
Nobody else owns an N7 with a Chromecast and has issues?

Hi,
I am also having the same issue with Viki. It is happening not just only on Nexus 7 but also on Nexus 5 too. I realized that other than Google apps the rest of the apps have this issue.
I'm having the exact same problem, whether using my Windows 8.1 PC or Nexus 7, but does NOT occur with HBO GO, but does with Pandora, Songa. Haven't figured out the solution yet.
Under WiFi advanced settings, check the keep WiFi on during sleep setting is set to always.

Can't stream videos properly

I have the pro 10.1 SM-T520 stock everything never messed with it at all.
Any way I try and stream videos I have problems. At the very least it will be laggy, the audio will play and the video will freeze, and my entire tablet will become unresponsive. Even worse, it will sometimes turn off my WiFi, and then turn it back on, no matter which wifi I'm connected to. It doesn't matter if I'm on YouTube, Amazon, Netflix, or in my browser, I can't stream any video properly.
Is this a common issue? Are there any fixes for this?

Could be your router or your provider causing the problem. Have you tried a different wifi, like a friends house, to see if it happens elsewhere? Maybe try a different router. Right now I have 12 devices connected to my home network, 7 of them are wireless. My son is currently watching Youtube, my other son is playing multiplayer game on my PS3, my wife is playing WOW with a sports channel playing on her Tab Pro 10.1 and I'm watching past episodes of Live Free or Die on my Tab Pro 10.1. Each episode is playing perfect. If my wife has issues with lag I hear about it within 5 seconds of it starting. LOL The rest of the devices are cell phones and a Chromecast (2nd Gen).
Our home setup is 200Mbps download/15Mbps upload. Have cable company supplied modem and 3 routers, Netgear R6250 AC1600 in the front of the house, an R6250 in the back of the house and a wirelessly connected WNR3500L v2 N300 for the Roku and Playstation 3.
Forgot to mention that my wifes Tab Pro 10.1 is unrooted. My tablet is rooted running Android KitKat 4.4.2. All 3 routers are using the latest DD-WRT Kong Mod instead of Netgear firmware.
I just noticed in your first post that WiFi shuts off. Do you have a WiFi manager running on your tablet? Rather than rely on the stock WiFi manager that disconnected occasionally I downloaded and use WiFi Manager written by Kostya Vasilyev located in the play store. I installed it on both tablet and phone along with my wife's tablet and phone. It keeps the connection alive, or at least tries to.
I hope I was able to help even a little bit. Good luck to you. PEACE

Forgot to mention that my wifes Tab Pro 10.1 is unrooted. My tablet is rooted running Android KitKat 4.4.2. All 3 routers are using the latest DD-WRT Kong Mod instead of Netgear firmware.

I've had this problem on many different wifis, and in all of them I've never had a problem with my phone or computer. So I don't see how the issue would be with the router

PEACE

I'll try it out. What is the actual name of the program, I'll look for it on the play store
