[Q] Ut oh... paper weight - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Well something catastrophic just happened. I had downloaded and installed the one-click full restore for 4.4.2 and everything seemed to work perfectly. Worked as advertised.
It rebooted and started the typical google play updates... working great. It happened to be plugged into my USB port at this time. I unplugged the USB and plugged it into the wall (factory charger) and the screen went blank and alittle hot one the back left side (looking down at screen) in the middle. No power, nothing. Will not turn on... just completely dead.
I have tried the getting into recovery etc etc... nothing. I didn't know if there was another set of HARD reboot actions I could pursue to try to get this thing to turn on?
Appreciate anything..
Thanks

One more thing to add... Im wondering if the battery was completely dead... seconds before, I looked and it was at 38% while plugged into USB... it was draining with the limited USB power, so I was plugging it into the wall for more power when it died.
At this point, I am just leaving it plugged in for awhile... it seems when I first got it the battery was so dead it wouldn't turn on... but.. I think I at least got the battery screen.'

now found on EBAY for parts...LOL

Well that sucks.
You could try a new battery?
Have you tried calling the service department?

Yes it does suck..LOL I could try a new battery, but I don't think I have ever seen a battery cause no power immediately. If it wer the battery I would think plug power would work... but not knowing exactly how it is wired.... the motherboard heats up when charging so it appears power is getting past the charging port..
I haven't called service... I voided warranty with rooting.

If you are getting anything on the screen at all then a usb download jig (cheap and available on the web) will likely get you to download mode. If it does then you can flash via Odin or Heimdall as you please.
There are tutorials on YouTube for how to use a jig (super easy) and even how to build your own (also easy).
I guess you could try it even if you have only black screen too, but chances are less likely that it will work in that case.

[Q] Flashed Caulkin's_format_all.zip, will not turn on

I had flashed Caulkin's_format_all.zip and I managed to accidentally reboot my phone before flashing a rom or anything. The phone will not power on, and if I plug it in, the charge indicator will not turn on. I've already tried pulling the batt for 5 minutes with no luck. any suggestions?
I did this once by being too quick at pushing the power button , I was able to reboot into recovery by pushing volume down and power button and then install a backup or you could flash rom. Hope this helps.
problem is, I can't even get it to boot, be it normal boot or bootloader.
If you hook it up to the computer, is it recognized?
Your going to have to borrow someones battery. I've seen people with this problem and for some reason, your phone won't recognize your battery and since it won't it won't charge it. Trust me, stick in a different battery and you will boot right up.
I've tried using my sprint extended life batt and the stock htc batt. neither worked.
and pc won't even recognize it.

So 100% sure that both batteries you've tried have a charge on them? And still no led when plugged in, to computer or wall? That sucks, because it sounds like it got bricked, somehow. I have also accidentally booted after flashing calk's format all from hitting the power button too quick, and as the other guy said, I was able to get to the bootloader by voldown+power, and restore a nandroid. I don't know what went differently in your case, but if you're positive that the batteries you've tried are good and charged, and you get no power led plugged into the wall, then it does sound like you somehow got a brick? Did you try leaving it plugged in for some time? A couple hours maybe, just to see if the led comes on?
Also make sure you are using a wall charger, I know if my battery charge is too low or dead the usb on my computer won't work, I then have to use the wall charger. The led will flash at first before starting to charge. When led is flashing phone won't turn on.
Edit:I just saw wall charging mentioned in previous post. I guess it shows the importance of it
I haven't tried leaving it plugged in. doing that now.
so I took it into the sprint store today and even the techs couldnt figure it out. I've got a replacement on the way. thanks for your suggestions guys!

Well i guess that may be a way of doing it. Completely break the phone if something goes wrong during root
hmmm.... weird.... your phone decided it had enough flashing apparently
First ive seen of a phone completely bricked that wasn't during a radio update.

Think my phone is bricked now :(

My phone won't turn back on or charge anymore. The last thing i did was pause Google Music, then the phone just sat there. It wouldn't go to the home screen or anything, it froze. I pulled the battery and now it won't turn on or charge at all. Won't display the battery charging when i have it connected to the computer or wall. Can't enter fastboot either. I'm currently at work and the computers here wont recognize it when i connected via USB.
mhm motherboard sudden death..? it doesnt seems to be a brick.

I doubt it's bricked. Will it start up into the bootloader?
Again, try pulling the battery for a few minutes. Then put everything back together but wait until you have access to a true USB charger, not a USB port on a computer. I've noticed with a few phones in the past (GNex included) that sometimes when I had a bad crash and the phone went unresponsive, that trying to get a hint of life while using a USB port didn't work as well as a charger. You'll probably have to leave it plugged in for a little bit, but after 15-30 minutes you should once again at least get the white battery charging icon to display front-and-center if you give the power button a single push. At that point, try booting into fastboot, then recovery and clean things up a bit before rebooting into android (Wipe Caches, Fix Permissions).
If not, seriously, do everything again, and wait with it charging overnight. I had a similar issue with my Nexus 10 after doing my first unroot and flashing on it. It took nearly an hour, but then I finally got the charging icon (in that case though, a battery pull wasn't feasible).

Yeah i tried all of that since 1 pm yesterday, that's when it just died on me. I have left the phone charging for over an hour and still don't get any sign of life, not even the white battery charging icon. Left the phone charging overnight, that didn't work also. I tried the OMAP fix but that also failed, it isn't recognized by my laptop.
That's a bummer. Once I had an Epic 4G that I also thought was bricked but the "leave it charge overnight" method worked even though the charging led wasn't on at all. I'm surprised that I now have seen an actual thread with a truly bricked device, not the usual "my phone is going into boot loops its bricked!" thread. Sorry to hear it man.
This may be irrelevant to you, but mine is on verizon and was having charging problems. I went into one of their stores and they had a replacement on the way in under 15 minutes of me coming in. Great service from them if that's who you're with carrier-wise.

Everything was working perfectly on mine, the battery was at 80%. I'm with T-Mobile and i know they don't carry the Galaxy Nexus. Would a Verizon store let me check if a new battery will be turn it back on? If not, guess i have no other choice but to call Samsung =/

[Q] sponteneously bricked EVO-4g

I have a rooted HTC evo 4g. I rooted it about 2 months ago and have had no problems.
I woke up this morning, and it is bricked. I have not recently flashed anything or done anything beyond regular phone use.
i cannot enter download mode, and the "charging" led does not come on.
Any suggestions?
What does your phone do when you press the power button?
Have you removed the battery and inspected for indications of damage such as discoloration or bulges?
Have you tried connecting a different USB cable that is known to be working?
Have you visually inspected the USB connector for loose/damaged conductors?

the power button does nothing.
The usb cable and wall adapter works on my kindle, and i tried an additional one with no results.
The battery appears normal, however my next planned step is to try and get a replacement battery and see if that works.
Try taking battery out and then plug usb cable in only and try to turn on...

no dice.
also wondering about the cause... 2 potential things:
- I've noticed that the phone gets very hot. 40+ degrees even when not running much. Is this within normal tolerance or could i be looking at heat damage.
- I've been getting the pop-up asking me to do some sort of OTA update. I keep saying no, because i know these ota updates can be incompatible with rooted phones. Could it have pushed through somehow and if it did could it cause the problem i am experiencing?
phone is fixed.
A read on the sprint forum that sometimes holding down the power for an extended time can get the phone to be responsive... had to hold it for like 90 seconds. It then flashed the white evo boot screen and powered back down almost immediately.
After this, however, the orange charging light came on and i was able to get to boot loader. I let the phone charge for a while, then it boot up as normal.
One of the things i noticed is that the battery is practically completely drained... this is odd as it was plugged into the charger when it died. On the same sprint forum, others have speculated that sometimes the battery can drain to the point where it wont accept a charge anymore... so maybe thats the issue.

[Q] Galaxy S3 died..?

The other day I noticed my S3 was not charging correctly.
When I plugged it in it would make all the correct noises and signs, but the battery was dropping.
Changed out the charger, still the same thing.
Changed out the cable...still no go.
Finally I turned it off, removed the cover and battery, placed it back and and it charged just fine when powered down.
Proceed to the next day and it's still doing the same thing.
So once again I power it down, plug it and let it charge.
I get up this morning and notice that it did not charge, no red led or charging screen was active either.
So now I have nothing.
It will not turn on. The only thing it does is show me a red led when I plug it in, but goes no further.
Nothing major has been done recently.
I do have a stock rom that's been rooted and flashed onto it via Odin, but I did that months ago when JB came out for TMo.
Any ideas or am I SOL?
I think I'm also out of luck with the warranty as it's rooted, and it once took a drop and hit a corner (the one time I took it out of the case!)
I would try another battery.

Okay so luckily my S3 isn't dead or bricked.
However, it will no longer charge batteries.
It reports that it's plugged in and charging, but if anything it's actually discharging quicker.
I swapped out batteries and it turns back on, but will not charge.
Other S3 will charge my battery no issue though, so that's not it.
I have tried 4 different chargers and 5 different cables.
All produce the same result.
I don't know if the S3 is compatible with them, but I've tried two current monitors.
One reports no amperage going into the phone, the other will show a -5mah load when charging.
I cleaned out the bottom connector with some contact cleaner, still no go.
Since the phone will also die while off, I feel it's not an Android issue.

So I flashed the latest 4.1.2 JB with Odin (stock but already rooted via root66 rom)
Still nothing, battery does not charge when plugged in.
When I was booting into download mode, it would keep restarting when it was plugged in.
I had to boot into download mode, then plug in the usb (to my laptop)
This really sucks. I've really had no issues with this phone but this incident is leaving a bad taste in my mouth Samsung. :crying:

Just so you know, when it is plugged in, it will not power on into system, recovery or download mode. That is normal. As for it not charging, All I can guess is either a shorted or broken pin inside the phones usb port. If this is the case, and you dont have insurance for it, you may need to get a spare battery. Ive seen some that come with a desktop charger where you plug the battery into the charger itself.

I just found it odd I could boot up to the point and it would shut back down, so figured it was worth mentioning.
The outer port is not the issue from what I can see.
For now I ended up buying external batteries I have to swap out,
Really sucks having to swap out a couple a day. My next phone has to have a wireless charger at this point.

You could have gotten a wireless charger for the S3, I had one but ended up selling it because I never really used it.
Sounds like it's the S3 itself. You could order the part online and watch a step by step tutorial on YouTube if you feel confident enough to do it yourself.

If you want wireless charging, there a receiver tag on Amazon that allows you to have QI standard wireless charging.

[Q] Fried battery?

So occasionally if I'm up too late, I don't hear my alarm (on phone). Well, I had noticed recently it got super warm to the touch if I overslept a bit, I think because it just buzzes constantly while plugged into the wall.
Anyway, it won't turn out now without direct power plugged in. Tried reformatting, wiping cache, everything.. I can get it plugged into the pc and booted up but as soon as I try to select media storage, it fails. Won't turn back on now even with it plugged in.
Any suggestions, did my battery just croak?
TYIA.

For real? Man, I'll be honest.. I had to break my flashing addiction, so I intentionally got an older Nex, so I could root, and leave it the F alone.. Haven't flashed a ROM since I owned it (bought it unlocked like 12 months ago), couldn't even tell you what ROM is/was on it..
Since when is it a bad thing to charge overnight? I adopted that habit when I went android. :/

well some phones don't have any problems with ovecharging but its not recommended nevertheless
heard some batteries were F***** up from overchargind
Same exact thing happened to me...thought the phone was fried. I replaced the battery as a last ditch effort and she lit up like a Christmas tree. And as for that last response, I leave mine on the charger all night literally every night without any negative issues. You cannot overcharge the battery on an android phone. They have protective charging circuits, just like laptops.

I'm hoping it's only that but wouldn't it fire up with wall charge? It freeze on the Google loading screen.. have a feeling it's cause I wiped it and maybe it didn't finish.
EDIT: Okay, I obviously was a bit messed up earlier.. I factory wiped it, including the OS.. how can I jump an OS onto this thing if it won't boot without charge?
Okay, well the symptoms sound exactly the same as when I fried my battery. At first, mine would only boot with a wall charge, but then it stopped doing even that. The only thing I could get into was the boot loader. I'd try a new battery before worrying too much. In the meantime, however, can you see if the phone is being recognized by a Windows PC, or if you can get the bootloader? If it is bricked, there is a bit of software called OMAPFlash that i used once that can completely reset the phone's programming.

If you just wiped the OS from recovery you should still be able to boot into fastboot. Are you able to boot into fastboot (power+volume up+volume down)? If so then it is not hard to fix.
If you can't boot into fastboot, try:
1) Without battery, plugged into wall (try a different charger)
2) Without battery, plugged into computer
3) With a different USB cable.
Does it vibrate when turning on? And does it go into fastboot?

When I plug it in, the initial charging indicator comes up (Battery with lightning bolt), but won't otherwise turn on via holding power.. or get into fastboot at all. If I plug it into my pc, it initially shows the power indicator again but same deal. Interestingly enough tho, my pc makes the sounds it makes when it's syncing or installing usb drivers for something.. except it starts, then stops, then continues.. it's non-stop trying to sync but nothing is happening, it's almost as if it's getting either a partial charge/connection and then it stops. What I thought before was a battery I'm thinking is worse cause I can't get the thing on at all now. :/ Might be time to hit Verizon today..
It was the battery but now I have no OS on the phone.. UGH. I can't get it into storage mode to pull a new ROM over from PC to flash. Anyone know how to force a ROM over via adb?
