Hallo everyone,
I just bought a Nexus 5 and I'm looking for a specific Qi Charger for my Automobile. I'm looking ONLY for a model that could be connected at the cigarette lighter receptacle, something like this one but with the Qi funktion. It would be perfect for me, someone knows where I could buy it?
I just made a Fotomontage und this is how it could be the look of the Qi charger that I got in my mind (of course with a Nexus 5 instead of the iPhone).

It's possible that it doens't exist a product like this?
There doesn't seem to be any kind of back to the cradle so can't even see if it's possible to make something for the coil. Would be brilliant if you could...similar to what I've been looking for.
Sadly I'm not an electro freak and I can't build it
I'm wondering how It could be possible that this product doens't exist in the whole planet...maybe are we wrong and someone knows one?

Maybe get an official Nexus 5 charger and a lighter outlet plug and fix something up with that. Since it has magnets in it, it should hold the phone in place pretty well.

I would suggest the official nexus Qi charger since it has adhesive capabilities so the phone does not slide off while driving....then find a usb cigarette lighter adapter to connect the charger to and you should be set. The nexus 4 charger has an adhesive surface and the nexus 5 charger has a magnetic surface to keep the phone secured to the phone.
I have not tried this...so use at your own risk but should work.
Something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7iIf6VkFXM
The nexus charger magnets don't seem to work with cases from what I've seen. I'm considering getting this dock and then attached the AirDock to the end. Bit pricey but should work well.
The solution i have came up with may or may not work for you since cars all have different interior setups.
So my set up consists of
-Nexus Wireless Charger
-Kenu Airframe Vent Mount
-Cigarette charger / micro usb cable
This works perfectly and not permanent in case you don't want adhesive disk on your dash or a suction cup on your windshield and have to reach for it.
Mount the well.. mount on your AC vent and then use that to hold the charger and run the cable from it to the cigarette lighter port and viola.
So far I've been driving with this for two days, using it as a GPS via Google Maps. Driving thru bad highways and still holding on strong.. Phone needs to be naked though.
Sorry.. I don't know how to post pics.. first time posting..
How about this? http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/LG-Car-M...LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e8d32a5ea&_uhb=1
I've been using the Qi unit WCP-300 for quite some time (since Nexus 4). Stable and solidly built.
Haturaya, those products got always a usb cabel, i don't wont a cable all over my cockpit, that's why a solution like this one would be perfect, with a Qi charger instead of a USB connector.
I was interested in this model, but isn't compatible with the Nexus 5 'cause this one got the USB Connector inverted...
F**k!
At the end I just gave up the reserch of this perfect Qi charger and I bought this one (modified in the order to fit the big dimension of the Nexus 5)
I hope to see in the future this same model but with Qi charger, I would buy it immediatly.
shouldn't need the clamps its got magnetic mounts on the back. I want one of those

How sturdy is the cable? Does it wobble around when the phones in there?

It woobles a little bit, but I could say that it's enought stable to use the phone without problems.
I want a magnetically held up one.

I have one. It works great, without a case. Can't say how it works with a case but it is sticky and they include magnetic stickers that you can use to make anything stick to the mount. I use one of those with my wife's Galaxy Nexus (only as a mount, not a charger in that case.)

Weekend project. Rip apart my WCP-700 Qi charger, remove the guts, and then integrate it all into the ash tray of my car. Here's how it turned out.
All mocked up, held things in with hot glue. Not worried about how it looks since I'm going to be covering it once the electronics work.

This is the 12v to 19v converter I used. Ordered a cheap cigarette lighter adapter from amazon to do the conversion. The WCP-700 needs a 19v (?) 500ma power source. The one I found output 19v, 1.5A.
Almost finished product, it all works with the exception of the cover.
Video of the final product! Wanted to keep the ash tray door and the 12v power source, I think I did pretty well.
That's awesome.. Great thing to have

Bought it off of amazon a few weeks ago, looks like they ran out I was looking to buy another once since I ripped this one to shreds. :\
Hah, looks like you won the race
Questions:
Did you use the Amazon charger that I put in the other thread, or did you find a better option?
You mentioned an issue with the N4. Was this position based, or do you think it's a power/signal issue?
Thanks!

1. I used the LG WCP-700
2. I think it's a little bit of both. The way the transmit coil sits in the ash tray, it ends up being a little crooked. I think the glass back on the N4 is just think enough to prevent it from working correctly. The coil I bought for my S3 is a tiny bit offset as it is, plus it only has a super thin plastic back to go through.

Used this one off of Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J0Y87S/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
Note, the plug is too large. I soldered all the connections so I wasn't interested in matching up the plugs anyway. The stock plug on the LG looks to be about 3mm OD, center positive.
Looks good, I'm not sure about having to press the phone down in there like that, I think that would scratch the sides at some point?
Other than that, pretty awesome. I liked my wireless charging mod, but I finally stopped using it because I wanted a protective case.
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 Tapatalk 2
Here is my simple question.
Did you try running the Qi charger with a 12v input before doing your stepup to 19v?
I have read at least two people who claim that even though the input is rated at 19v it will work with 12v.
It makes sense to me that 12v would work since the output is only 5v anyhow.
I know your setup is all need already but can you or anyone else confirm if that is true or not?
Really quite interested in a mod like this but I don't really like the idea of stepping 12v up to 19v back down to 5v if I don't have to.
And I would also rather not spend the extra $12 if I don't have to.
Thanks!

You may encounter trouble because of the One's all-metal body. Your case will need to completely isolate the coil from the body for this to work, if memory serves me right. Admittedly, it is aluminum, so I'm not altogether certain it will be an issue.

I would really like to see something like this. A couple of challenges I think would be keeping the plug area on the bottom to as thin as possible and second would be to keep the case as thin and small as possible.

Post pics of it on the phone and let us know what kind of charger your using. It looks like you could rip off that coil and place it in any case if it's thin .
Definitely report on results. I tried to make something like this for my One XL, and while it worked as far as charging went, it was unpredictable and seemed to make the phone unstable, though I could never figure out why. I suspect it's not just the charging current but that the phone's charging circuits and drivers need to be tuned for wireless.

you need the Type b for the HTC One, it seems to work but as it's only 500mA at 5V the charging is

It is very slim and unnoticeable behind a tpu case, the connected usb does not stick out that far either

As it came from China it took awhile to arrive but the price is right

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'd not seen that, but it looks like just what I'd like to try and fit between my phone and case. The lack of wireless charging was the biggest reason I held off switching from my DNA to the One. I love the convenience of just plopping my phone on the orb charger during the day. Nfc doesn't connect to the battery of the phone and the coil is not inductive as it is a derivative of close range rfid
A quick tip for the add on qi pads with the HTC one, as the USB is not in the middle you can't position the pad straight up or the curved back makes it hard to get a connection. Put it on a bit of a diagonal so the pad is in the centre of the back

How about some thing like this? If you get a QI charger that has a battery pack built in you would not need to have the charger plugged into your car all the time and have to see ugly wires. Plus you can also charger your friends phones at the same time if they need. How do you plan on adding the wireless charger to your car dock? Seams like a fun project, good luck. Keep us updated.

The LuguLake is too wide to fit. Thanks tho.
I have a Proclip adjustable mount that has some space between the back of the phone and the front of the plate. All I am planning on doing is finding something that will fit in that space, double side sticky tape it and plug my existing (hidden) usb cable in to it. Nothing too fancy. Realistically, the only thing it gives me is the ability to slide my phone into the mount and get juice without having to go through all the trouble of plugging in the usb cable (joking, it's not saving me more than 3 seconds, but gives me bonus geek points).

If the specifications are accurate the T200 puts out 7.5W (5v x 1.5amp) whereas the WGP-300 puts out 5W (5v x 1amp).

anybody tried a palm pre charger? its dirt cheap on amazon. interested in it just because of the price, but not sure if itll work though.
Hi everybody! I've seen a few threads about figuring how to use the Nexus Wireless Charger as a car mount/dock for our Nexus 5 phones and this is the solution that I've come up with. It's not the cheapest option as this charger costs more than most others out there. However, I wanted to utilize one of the standout features of the Nexus 5 which is being able to use the wireless magnetic charger out of the box without any modifications. I also didn't want to do any drastic mods to mount that to my car. I've seen other threads showing how some of you smart engineer types can rig some cool setups using paper clips and rubber bands. I'm no Macguyver (though I wish I was that smart).
I actually have tried to mount a wireless charging dock. This was a few years ago when I had the Palm Pre, which had the wireless charging (and also magnetic) Touchstone. To keep it short, I used this moldable plastic stuff to fix it to a car mount, which was then screwed onto my dashboard. It was not pretty at all. Plus, that moldable plastic ended up melting on a hot summer day. Shortly after that Palm got sold to HP and webOS went the way of the Dodo. I moved on to a Samsung Galaxy SII and have been missing the webOS cards and the Touchstone ever since.
Now comes the Nexus 5. To my surprise Google/LG also announces the awesome Nexus Wireless Charger. FINALLY something equivalent to the amazing Palm Touchstone. I just HAVE to have it.
Once you use something like a Touchstone and the Nexus Wireless Charger, it's tough to go back. Yes, you can still plug in the microUSB cord and yes it's not a big deal. But once you start using a nice magnetic wireless charger, you'll know. You just pop the phone on, it holds in place, and charges. Simple. In the car it makes absolute sense. Now I wish that the stock Android homescreen supports landscape mode by default and that there was a better interface for car use, but those are software issues which I think will only get better with time. As far as hardware goes though, the Nexus 5 along with the Nexus Wireless Charger on a good car mount works amazing. No need to modify the phone or your car dashboard and the magnet holds the phone on strongly. The only main disadvantage hardware-wise is that the phone has to be naked for the magnet to hold strongly. I also wish the Nexus 5 has the Touchless Controls of the Moto X; that would seem like the perfect thing to do have while the phone is docked on the car.
TLDR version: Magnetic wireless chargers are friggin awesome and are even more awesomer to use as a car dock. List of stuff, pics and video below.
Please excuse my dirty dusty car, poor speaking skills and shaky camera.

The 'Sticky Suction' items are new and don't seem to be on the site yet, but they're listed in the 2014 catalog PDF. I was able to order directly from them and pick up since I live nearby in Southern California. I like their modular approach to the car mounts by having the ball and dual T adapters and I was glad to find something that I could easily stick the Nexus wireless charger to for my setup.
Also if you're wondering, this is the USB Car Charger I'm using and it seems to not have any problems so far.

I don't know how much I trust that magnet did it fall off on anyone im really tempted to try this out
I really want to do this, but I feel like you can only do this if you don't use a case. Even though the wireless charger should work with thinner cases, I don't think the magnet will hold very well unless the phone is naked.

Correct. I haven't seen a magnetic one yet that can hold this phone with a case on. It's kinda weird considering phone cases are the norm. Why not make it with stronger magnets to compensate?

Better question is why can't someone make a case with metal tabs in the same locations as the phone?
That way the magnets wouldn't have to be stronger.
They'd have my money instantly.

Nice project man! Very clean!
Can you do me a favor? When the phone is attached, can you measure the magnetic field? Just use an apk that measure with the magnetic field sensor of the phone.
Thanks a lot!

I have done pretty much the same thing (just a different mount) but I had had issues finding a USB cable that will work. Can you tell me which one you used?

The Google LG Brand Quick Cover (the flappy one) actually has steel bits to align with the magnets. It actually holds on stronger than without the case!
This is VERY cool! Thank you!
Quick question, do you get any vibrations when driving, or when you hit a speed bump? I drive a truck and the dash vibrats... I wonder if it would hold. I guess I could always connect it to the glass...
Is your phone charging when you are using navigation app (Google maps for example)?
I've tried with Chinese cheap wireless charger and performance for this case isn't amazing.
At least it's not discharging, but not able to charge with navigation on.

I wanted to know the same, as I have a similar setup as the op but when I use gps the battery drains faster then it charges, trying to work out if the 2a car charger isn't supplying enough current or gps just isn't possible with wireless charging?
I need the different links to the apparatus, one of arkon items cannot be shipped to india.
I just got a Nexus 5 and really liking the Qi wireless charging built inside the device. I have seen some options on the internet for wireless charging car mounts and wanted to see if anyone had any reviews and/or feedback before I purchase
I have seen the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless at CES, Choe on Amazon and an Owl something option. (Sorry - I was trying to post the links to more details but since I am new I cannot.)
Please - any feedback would be great because I really want to purchase SOMETHING for both mine and my wife's vehicle. Thanks! :good:
From what I understand the car mount options out there are very few with the full capability to provide a complete charge whilst having various apps running.. IE, maps, music, gps etc etc...
I would love to be proven wrong, though that is my understanding. Proclip were doing R&D on the Qi wireless charging but have yet to come up with a product that can fulfil this void.

I just received mine, I am using the CD tray mounting option but have the dash one(which doesnt work well for the textured dash of my Sonata), works great holds the phone securely using the built in magnets comes with a 2.1amp car charger which i used going between cali and vegas with GPS and slacker streaming over bluetooth for the whole time and it still charged. Very good construction and again the magnets in teh charger hold the phone secure in landscape/portrait even over some fairly large bumps phone never moved.
sad to say, but after finding no possible way to mount my airdock to my existing mount, i will probably be selling it for what i paid
i was really hoping to get to use it too, as (with the plastic still covering the microfoam suction) the magnets still hold quite well.
i have a custom mount that my current dock attaches to with the standard 4 bolts (and nuts)

there's no possible way to mount the airdock to that without opening it up and drilling holes, which i may still do)

why not just drill a hole in the current mount and attached a ball mount to the current mount ? or use a suction pad and just use the regular mount to it something like
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Portable-GPS-Dashboard-Adhesive/dp/B002IABMYS
then just attach the dash mount u got with the airdock to that, just use a really good adhesive on the disk
i looked into all that... most of those options would move the phone a lot closer to me, and usually directly over my gear box. it would also vibrate a lot more than it currently does
i guess i'll look into it some more though... worst case is i sell the airdock and either keep using my N4 proclip, or purchase the N5 proclip... no Qi charging, but a perfect fit.

It does work with a case, i have a fairly thick case on mine (just for testing) one of the wallet cases and it charges fine, magnets get a little weaker after the 1/3'' it has to penetrate
Would you mind posting a picture of the case or link?

I made my own "airdock". It took some doing finding the material used for the face but I did find it. Let me tell ya, the suspension in my car is pretty stiff and the roads in New England are garbage. The phone WITH case did not budge and maintained charge. Its not a fast charge (everyone that knows anything about Qi charging knows it isn't fast). I can post links to what I used. I still have a ridiculous amount of that "small" sheet I ordered for the face of mine so I can sell off pieces if anyone is interested. Obviously, contact me via pm for that material so as to not clutter this thread.
