My Nexus Wireless Charger Car Mount Setup - Nexus 5 Accessories

Hi everybody! I've seen a few threads about figuring how to use the Nexus Wireless Charger as a car mount/dock for our Nexus 5 phones and this is the solution that I've come up with. It's not the cheapest option as this charger costs more than most others out there. However, I wanted to utilize one of the standout features of the Nexus 5 which is being able to use the wireless magnetic charger out of the box without any modifications. I also didn't want to do any drastic mods to mount that to my car. I've seen other threads showing how some of you smart engineer types can rig some cool setups using paper clips and rubber bands. I'm no Macguyver (though I wish I was that smart).
I actually have tried to mount a wireless charging dock. This was a few years ago when I had the Palm Pre, which had the wireless charging (and also magnetic) Touchstone. To keep it short, I used this moldable plastic stuff to fix it to a car mount, which was then screwed onto my dashboard. It was not pretty at all. Plus, that moldable plastic ended up melting on a hot summer day. Shortly after that Palm got sold to HP and webOS went the way of the Dodo. I moved on to a Samsung Galaxy SII and have been missing the webOS cards and the Touchstone ever since.
Now comes the Nexus 5. To my surprise Google/LG also announces the awesome Nexus Wireless Charger. FINALLY something equivalent to the amazing Palm Touchstone. I just HAVE to have it.
Once you use something like a Touchstone and the Nexus Wireless Charger, it's tough to go back. Yes, you can still plug in the microUSB cord and yes it's not a big deal. But once you start using a nice magnetic wireless charger, you'll know. You just pop the phone on, it holds in place, and charges. Simple. In the car it makes absolute sense. Now I wish that the stock Android homescreen supports landscape mode by default and that there was a better interface for car use, but those are software issues which I think will only get better with time. As far as hardware goes though, the Nexus 5 along with the Nexus Wireless Charger on a good car mount works amazing. No need to modify the phone or your car dashboard and the magnet holds the phone on strongly. The only main disadvantage hardware-wise is that the phone has to be naked for the magnet to hold strongly. I also wish the Nexus 5 has the Touchless Controls of the Moto X; that would seem like the perfect thing to do have while the phone is docked on the car.
TLDR version: Magnetic wireless chargers are friggin awesome and are even more awesomer to use as a car dock. List of stuff, pics and video below.
Please excuse my dirty dusty car, poor speaking skills and shaky camera.

The 'Sticky Suction' items are new and don't seem to be on the site yet, but they're listed in the 2014 catalog PDF. I was able to order directly from them and pick up since I live nearby in Southern California. I like their modular approach to the car mounts by having the ball and dual T adapters and I was glad to find something that I could easily stick the Nexus wireless charger to for my setup.
Also if you're wondering, this is the USB Car Charger I'm using and it seems to not have any problems so far.

I don't know how much I trust that magnet did it fall off on anyone im really tempted to try this out

I really want to do this, but I feel like you can only do this if you don't use a case. Even though the wireless charger should work with thinner cases, I don't think the magnet will hold very well unless the phone is naked.

Correct. I haven't seen a magnetic one yet that can hold this phone with a case on. It's kinda weird considering phone cases are the norm. Why not make it with stronger magnets to compensate?
Sent from the jaws of my Hammerhead!

Better question is why can't someone make a case with metal tabs in the same locations as the phone?
That way the magnets wouldn't have to be stronger.
They'd have my money instantly.

Nice project man! Very clean!
Can you do me a favor? When the phone is attached, can you measure the magnetic field? Just use an apk that measure with the magnetic field sensor of the phone.
Thanks a lot!

I have done pretty much the same thing (just a different mount) but I had had issues finding a USB cable that will work. Can you tell me which one you used?

The Google LG Brand Quick Cover (the flappy one) actually has steel bits to align with the magnets. It actually holds on stronger than without the case!

This is VERY cool! Thank you!
Quick question, do you get any vibrations when driving, or when you hit a speed bump? I drive a truck and the dash vibrats... I wonder if it would hold. I guess I could always connect it to the glass...

Is your phone charging when you are using navigation app (Google maps for example)?
I've tried with Chinese cheap wireless charger and performance for this case isn't amazing.
At least it's not discharging, but not able to charge with navigation on.

I wanted to know the same, as I have a similar setup as the op but when I use gps the battery drains faster then it charges, trying to work out if the 2a car charger isn't supplying enough current or gps just isn't possible with wireless charging?

I need the different links to the apparatus, one of arkon items cannot be shipped to india.

[Q] No More Dock Mode?

I really liked the dock mode on my older Droids (OG and Droid 3). They were activated by a magnet in the right place. Is the dock mode gone from the new Droids?
I don't see Motorola selling docks for specific phones anymore. The Amazon reviews for the flip stand seems to imply that a special charging cable the stand comes with automatically starts dock mode. Is that right? But the stand itself seems very unsteady, and too big. not much better than plugging it in.
Any other docking ideas?
Brian
There is a Griffin car dock and desktop dock available on Verizon's web site. I just received the car dock. Like the Droid 3 and Bionic card docks I had, the dock mode is launched when you connect via the USB port on the dock.
there's droid dream mode, which can be acteived either/or while the droid is charging or on a dock. so i'm guessing that's what you're looking for. it's in settings, under display i believe.
I bought a generic windshield dock, and the Maxx doesn't really seem to have a car dock mode. I installed iBolt Dock and Drive 2.2 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ibolt.carhome) as recommended by the dock, and it does pretty well.
Just in case it works, I ordered the Griffin dock and the red bumper. Hopefully I'll know if there is a built in dock mode once the Griffin dock arrives.
The magnet positions are still there. Dock mode is the magnet position just under the M logo and car mode is on the left side (side without the volume buttons).
The Griffin dock does activate a dock mode, but it is merely a Motorola speech program. It does shift into landscape mode when horizontal.

Car dock mode does work, but with the bumper case on, the USB connector is not long enough to engage so the phone will not charge if the dock is plugged in.

The magnet that activates dock mode on the Bionic is on the little clip that secures the phone to the dock. Try it... if you don't flip the clip down, it won't go into dock mode.

I was very disappointed when I learned this. Excited that my existing charging cord in the car fit and worked, then realized there was no charging. As I prefer the bumper in use, I had to go back to the more generic dock I originally bought.

I just ordered the Griffin Dock from VZW today and the details say it works with all cases no matter how bulky... I also ordered the holster case to go with it because it may be a bit unattractive but my Razr is two years old and looks new because or that holster and I work in the construction trades. If the griffin dock dose not work with the holster/case it's going back. I knew I should have waited too check the dock in person once I had the case.
Verizion/Moto better get on the stick with accessories for their phones. I mainly blame Verizon because the Droids are their exclusive design.

I think car & home docks are becoming a thing of the past.
Most cars produced in the last few years have Bluetooth connectivity, and many have navigation.
Inductive chargers are more convenient than device-specific docks, and some, like the TYLT VU, double as a stand. Some auto makers are starting to put Qi wireless charges in new cars, too.
If you have Bluetooth on your car and a Qi wireless charger at home, what's the point in shelling out a couple hundred dollars for docks that will be worthless when you buy your next phone?

The OEM docks are about $40... not a bad price to pay for something the average user is going to get 2 years use out of. When you have a van or other commercial vehicle and rely on navigation to get you where you need to go a dock is a good thing to have.

Nexus 5 Car Mount Thread

How do you mount nexus 5 in your car. Post!
I'm using this: a 2 in one mount. It's an aged mount for my old s3, but it also fits new nexus 5 perfectly.
I have used this a number of times now. It holds the phone very solid.

I love my Tetrax FIX. I don't have my Nexus 5 yet (arriving tomorrow), but my wife and I both have Tetrax FIX's in each of our cars, as well as the attachments on our two current phones (HTC Evo 4G LTE & Samsung Galaxy S3). I'm assuming the Nexus 5 will still work with the Tetrax, as it is designed to be minimal and universal.
I usually wait for ProClip to come out with a new phone holder.

+1 for proclip. I am using the iPhone proclip holder and holds the nexus decent.

Pro clip. Just waiting on the to make the Nexus 5 dock.
Here's my N4 rig which is not surprisingly also my N5 rig. In my 2006 Mazda 6. Simply blocked the middle vent with a round plastic disc and attached the clip with it's suction cup.

I have been using Tetrax for years on my iphone and my s4. I use an x-way version so i can landscape the phone easier. main issue issue get getting the dam metal dots to stick to the cases It generally boils down to a good chunk of crazy glue. Main issue is i plan to use wireless charging with it and i don't think having a steel disk glues to back of phone/case most likely will impair that. I was looking at buying an I-bolt.
proclip for sure. that's the only mount that will ever go in my car
*EDIT*
turns out it fits in my Nexus 4 proclip mount... but Google/LG decided to flip the micro USB port so i can't use the same hardwired charging cable (it's a right angle plug) without cutting it open, which i'd rather not do... but it fits, just no charging :-/
Just an fyi, according to the proclip facebook page, a person asked if they would get one for the N5 and they said they had picked up two devices and should have a mount ready in 4-6 weeks. They said updates on the nexus 5 proclip would be available via the facebook page.
I've just received one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007Y94CPO/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The quality is great, and because it's universal i won't need to buy a new mount for every new phone in future! The arms are spring loaded and released by a button on the back. Put the phone in, squeeze the arms together and it holds the phone perfectly. There's also a really nice rubber padding on every part that's in contact with the phone.
Most of the Amazon reviews are really positive too. I can't see there being any issues with it even after years of use. It really is a solid product! :good:
I believe the most convenient solution would be to use a Qi car dock: no connection needed and accommodate most cases. I looked around a little but but haven't found many options that look like they wont break down in a year
There is This one
That one (more expensive)
And This incredibly expensive LG official solution. (it got me thinking about making my own...
Any thoughts ? I really don't want to connect and dusconnect usb cables all the time ...
I bought this a while back for my GS4.
Works really well even with my ringke slim on the GS4.
To my surprise, it works with the N5 and without adding the thin metal plate as the N5 has the steel discs already built into it. It's not super strong like using the thin metal plate, but it holds fine.
The material on the mount (on top of the magnets) is also like that of the back of the N5 so it does rotate fairly easily once mounted so maybe in a landscape view, if not centered, it would move some on a bumpy road.

FYI the N5 is polarized differently than the N4. I realized this today driving to work in the SNOW. I can't see the screen at all when the phone is in landscape mode and I'm wearing polarized sunglassses. I don't particularly like portrait in the car, but my tasker/rotate workaround which isn't perfect (for google's RIDICULOUS decision to rip car mode out of android) coupled with the polarization issue will force my hand.
This clip rotates easily, thankfully. I know for many of you charging in the car dock is a must. For me I've learned to live without it.

Wireless Charging Car Mount Options?

I just got a Nexus 5 and really liking the Qi wireless charging built inside the device. I have seen some options on the internet for wireless charging car mounts and wanted to see if anyone had any reviews and/or feedback before I purchase
I have seen the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless at CES, Choe on Amazon and an Owl something option. (Sorry - I was trying to post the links to more details but since I am new I cannot.)
Please - any feedback would be great because I really want to purchase SOMETHING for both mine and my wife's vehicle. Thanks! :good:
From what I understand the car mount options out there are very few with the full capability to provide a complete charge whilst having various apps running.. IE, maps, music, gps etc etc...
I would love to be proven wrong, though that is my understanding. Proclip were doing R&D on the Qi wireless charging but have yet to come up with a product that can fulfil this void.

I just received mine, I am using the CD tray mounting option but have the dash one(which doesnt work well for the textured dash of my Sonata), works great holds the phone securely using the built in magnets comes with a 2.1amp car charger which i used going between cali and vegas with GPS and slacker streaming over bluetooth for the whole time and it still charged. Very good construction and again the magnets in teh charger hold the phone secure in landscape/portrait even over some fairly large bumps phone never moved.
sad to say, but after finding no possible way to mount my airdock to my existing mount, i will probably be selling it for what i paid
i was really hoping to get to use it too, as (with the plastic still covering the microfoam suction) the magnets still hold quite well.

why not just drill a hole in the current mount and attached a ball mount to the current mount ? or use a suction pad and just use the regular mount to it something like
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Portable-GPS-Dashboard-Adhesive/dp/B002IABMYS
then just attach the dash mount u got with the airdock to that, just use a really good adhesive on the disk
i looked into all that... most of those options would move the phone a lot closer to me, and usually directly over my gear box. it would also vibrate a lot more than it currently does
i guess i'll look into it some more though... worst case is i sell the airdock and either keep using my N4 proclip, or purchase the N5 proclip... no Qi charging, but a perfect fit.

I made my own "airdock". It took some doing finding the material used for the face but I did find it. Let me tell ya, the suspension in my car is pretty stiff and the roads in New England are garbage. The phone WITH case did not budge and maintained charge. Its not a fast charge (everyone that knows anything about Qi charging knows it isn't fast). I can post links to what I used. I still have a ridiculous amount of that "small" sheet I ordered for the face of mine so I can sell off pieces if anyone is interested. Obviously, contact me via pm for that material so as to not clutter this thread.

Looking for the perfect Qi auto Charger

Hallo everyone,
I just bought a Nexus 5 and I'm looking for a specific Qi Charger for my Automobile. I'm looking ONLY for a model that could be connected at the cigarette lighter receptacle, something like this one but with the Qi funktion. It would be perfect for me, someone knows where I could buy it?
I just made a Fotomontage und this is how it could be the look of the Qi charger that I got in my mind (of course with a Nexus 5 instead of the iPhone).

It's possible that it doens't exist a product like this?
There doesn't seem to be any kind of back to the cradle so can't even see if it's possible to make something for the coil. Would be brilliant if you could...similar to what I've been looking for.
Sadly I'm not an electro freak and I can't build it
I'm wondering how It could be possible that this product doens't exist in the whole planet...maybe are we wrong and someone knows one?

Maybe get an official Nexus 5 charger and a lighter outlet plug and fix something up with that. Since it has magnets in it, it should hold the phone in place pretty well.

I would suggest the official nexus Qi charger since it has adhesive capabilities so the phone does not slide off while driving....then find a usb cigarette lighter adapter to connect the charger to and you should be set. The nexus 4 charger has an adhesive surface and the nexus 5 charger has a magnetic surface to keep the phone secured to the phone.
I have not tried this...so use at your own risk but should work.
Something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7iIf6VkFXM
The nexus charger magnets don't seem to work with cases from what I've seen. I'm considering getting this dock and then attached the AirDock to the end. Bit pricey but should work well.
The solution i have came up with may or may not work for you since cars all have different interior setups.
So my set up consists of
-Nexus Wireless Charger
-Kenu Airframe Vent Mount
-Cigarette charger / micro usb cable
This works perfectly and not permanent in case you don't want adhesive disk on your dash or a suction cup on your windshield and have to reach for it.
Mount the well.. mount on your AC vent and then use that to hold the charger and run the cable from it to the cigarette lighter port and viola.
So far I've been driving with this for two days, using it as a GPS via Google Maps. Driving thru bad highways and still holding on strong.. Phone needs to be naked though.
Sorry.. I don't know how to post pics.. first time posting..
How about this? http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/LG-Car-M...LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e8d32a5ea&_uhb=1
I've been using the Qi unit WCP-300 for quite some time (since Nexus 4). Stable and solidly built.
Haturaya, those products got always a usb cabel, i don't wont a cable all over my cockpit, that's why a solution like this one would be perfect, with a Qi charger instead of a USB connector.
I was interested in this model, but isn't compatible with the Nexus 5 'cause this one got the USB Connector inverted...
F**k!
At the end I just gave up the reserch of this perfect Qi charger and I bought this one (modified in the order to fit the big dimension of the Nexus 5)
I hope to see in the future this same model but with Qi charger, I would buy it immediatly.
shouldn't need the clamps its got magnetic mounts on the back. I want one of those

At the end I just gave up the reserch of this perfect Qi charger and I bought this one (modified in the order to fit the big dimension of the Nexus 5)
I hope to see in the future this same model but with Qi charger, I would buy it immediatly.

How sturdy is the cable? Does it wobble around when the phones in there?

The clamp is there 'cause I broke the support in order to fit the Nexus 5 dimension.

It woobles a little bit, but I could say that it's enought stable to use the phone without problems.
I want a magnetically held up one.

Do you have one? I'm tempted to get one with this mount, but I've heard mixed reviews about how it holds phones in cases.

I have one. It works great, without a case. Can't say how it works with a case but it is sticky and they include magnetic stickers that you can use to make anything stick to the mount. I use one of those with my wife's Galaxy Nexus (only as a mount, not a charger in that case.)

REVIEW Galaxy Note 4 Qi Wireless Solution (pad, stand, car mount) w/lots of pics!!!

This is a Review of Galaxy Note 4 Qi Wireless Solution.
I was never a fan of wireless charging especially if it requires adding parts to a smartphone. It’s different with my Nexus 7 HD where Qi receiver is built in: just place it on a charging pad and off you go. Adding Qi receiver coil/pad and making sure it still works with my preferred case, not to mention without making case bulge out, seemed to me like a hassle. Back in the days when I had my Note 2, it wasn’t even an option since my provider (Verizon) disabled access to wireless charging contacts. With my Note 4 I was on a fence and the only driving force behind it was my use of the phone as GPS everyday to/from work where I have 1hr of driving each way and need to have my phone plugged in. Constant plugging and unplugging of micro-usb cable takes a toll on that port. So here I was, looking for a wireless solution for my Note 4 and accepting the fact that I will only be able to charge my phone at a maximum 1A (current limitation of a common inductive coil charging), which is half the speed of a typical 2A wired charger and even less in comparison to rapid charging.
I start looking into 3 common pieces of this solution: a wireless charging receiver pad to add under the battery cover of my Note 4, a wireless charging transmitter pad/stand, and a car mount with a wireless charging transmitter. Starting with a receiver coil/pad, you will find dozens of parts under $10, but unfortunately they don’t work the same. They all have an inductive receiver coil, some converter circuit, and two sets of contacts. They all will add thickness to your phone, making your battery door bulge out a bit, but not significantly. The problem, they all introduce a heat to the back of your phone (you have a high current going through a metal coil), but some make it very hot and others more tolerable. The one I found to be work the best for me is this Qi receiver pad: http://www.dx.com/p/newest-hot-sale...amsung-note-4-n9100-black-358059#.VM1OF7B0z3g - $7.99, 1A output, and about 62mm x 40mm in size. It was very easy to install, and had a little sticky strip on the back so it holds the pad in place once you align it with pins. Plus, it didn’t add too much bulge to my UAG case.

The most important thing – it actually WORKED with a transmitter/charging pad through my UAG case. Keep in mind, there is no physical contact between transmitter coil and receiver coil, that’s why it’s called inductive charging. The distance between coils will affect your charging speed, but I actually found this particular charging pad to work really well with my charging stand and car mount.
Speaking of charging stand, there are tons you can find on the net in round puck shape or a more traditional flat rectangular shape. The problem is that you need to align your phone with a charging coil inside of that charging pad and make sure you don’t move or shift it for duration of charging. That is a big challenge which has been resolved by infamous Tylt brand angled charging stand. But just like anything in this world, when you have an expensive brand name product, sooner or later you will find a similar looking (read: identical) alternative at half the price from China! This is a wireless charging stand I got: http://www.dx.com/p/itian-a6-3-coil...let-pc-mobile-phone-black-325355#.VM1O_rB0z3g ($33.73, 1A output, 3-coil design) or as a better alternative you can get it bundled with Note 4 wireless receiver for only $4 more: http://www.dx.com/p/itian-a6-3-coil...msung-galaxy-note-4-black-364016#.VM1YSrB0z3g
It works like a charm!!! No need to slide around for the correct position or to worry that someone will walk by and knock it off the stand. That stand is upright so it’s easy to position the phone, and 3-coil design covers a larger area so you don’t have to micro-adjust the position to find a sweet spot. Plus, phone is in upright position so it’s easy to view the screen if you have to. Also, there is led indicator when power is connected to the stand (red light) and when you make a charging contact (blue light). This way you know for sure phone is aligned and charging wirelessly. The most important, it works well with a charging pad on the back of my phone, it doesn’t get too hot, and you get close to 1A charging speed. Don’t forget, it also comes with a quality usb cable and 2A wall charger. I think for $37 plus change it’s the best solution you can get to have everything you need to setup your Note 4 with wireless charging. Plus, the same stand can be used for any of your other devices supporting Qi charging.
But why limit yourself to only in-home wireless charging? In my case, I was also interested for in-car charging as well. That is also challenging because you are not only looking for a wireless charging solution, but also for a sturdy grip for your phone so it won’t slip out while you are driving. I have reviewed a lot of regular car mounts, probably everything under the sun, and always find myself coming back to Arkon mounts. But when it comes to wireless charging, I found this one to work the best with my Note 4: http://www.dx.com/p/qi-vehicle-moun...xy-s3-s4-s5-note-2-note-3-335226#.VM1OTrB0z3g ($37.19, 1A output, with a bonus of usb cable, car charger, and a vent mount). The base has a typical suction cup with a rotation lock, taking very little room.
The actual mounting part is attached to the base through a common universal 17mm ball joint which means you can use it with any of your current mounts supporting the same connection. Those familiar with iOttie car mounts will see this one uses the same push button lock mechanism where you separate the holding “jaws” by pushing on the sides, and once the phone is placed into the cradle it pushes the back button to lock it in. Just keep in mind, if you have a bulky case like a Defender – it will not fit. It worked with UAG case but had a small margin, just enough. Also, since now you are a dealing with a single coil transmit charger – you will have to find a sweet spot to position your phone. The bottom of the mount has an adjustable shelf which is very convenient to set for that sweet spot to align it perfectly. Also, there is led indicator when power is connected to the mount (red light) and when you make a charging contact (blue light). This way you know for sure phone is aligned and charging wirelessly.
Overall, this solution works 100% with my Note 4 and UAG case (not the slimmest case to begin with), and provides a reliable charging, not too much overheating though it gets a bit warm (but not “hot” like I’ve seen with some other charging pads), and it’s very reasonably priced. Keep in mind, your charging speed will be at half speed due to 1A charging limitation. Still, gets my high recommendation!!!
So is the wireless charging fast enough to keep up with the battery drain of using GPS in the car?
Great review!
i'm wondering, when we will get faster charges, based on this solution:
Freescale's WCT1012/WCT1111 transmitter chips -- offered in standard and premium versions -- and its WPR1516 receiver chip are geared for mobile devices with bigger batteries. They enable a recharge that's up to three times faster than 5W predecessors, said Freescale's Randy Ryder.
"In a typical 5W system that's producing 1 amp current, you can charge in one hour. With 15 Watts, in theory, you could cut that charge time by a third by improving power," Ryder, wireless charging lead for Freescale's microcontroller division and a representative on the Power Matters Alliance, told EE Times.
Very Nice, Thank You.

Will the Note 4 fit into the Otterbox Defender or Commuter cases with this receiver installed?

It should fit, not a problem, but I'm afraid the distance between coils will be too far apart thus you will be charging probably at 0.5A rate

The same wireless car charging idea except it cost $100 and designed for a naked Galaxy, or maybe with a very thin TPU case.
Thanks for pointing that out! Much appreciated.

Hi. Did you notice if the phone gets hot while using the dx receivers? Also, now that you've used it for a bit do your still recommend this setup? Thx!
