Touchscreen not working after 4.4.3 update - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I was excited to see that one of my Nexus 7 tablets was getting the 4.4.3 update today. I started the update and let it go. When I came back I was at the lock screen. I only have the simple swipe to unlock. I couldn't unlock it at all. Held in the power button for several seconds until it shut off. Thought maybe something didn't load right. When I booted it back up, same thing. No touch screen.
Here is a little background. This is a Nexus 7 v2. Unlocked it and rooted it using the Nexus Root Toolkit version 1.8.2. During the process I did install the recommended recovery option. Everything worked great until the update today. Seems like I can't do anything. I can't use this toolkit to restore from the backup I made because I can't get into the tablet to turn on USB debugging or whatever it is asking me to do. I tried booting into recovery by holding the volume down and power button. The result was a picture of the android with a red triangle and an exclamation point. Not sure what else to do so I am posting this for all of you guys with more experience than me. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Once you are back at the android lying on its back, hold down power and tap the volume up key, this will get you a recovery menu, from there you can try to wipe cache and dalvik, and if need be, factory reset.

Touch screen is still dead.
Thanks for the quick update. I did all of the above and was able to reset the tablet. Not I am at the Welcome screen and tapping the screen does nothing I find it hard to believe that the touchscreen died during the update. I guess I will need to look on EBay for some parts. Can anyone suggest what parts to look for? Touch screen digitizer assembly is listing for around $65.

I might suggest you open it up now (you're going to have to anyways to replace it), and make sure the cable is securely inserted.

If touch works in TWRP then its not hardware related

Tried the cables...
I found a tear down video on YouTube and was able to disconnect and then reconnect the long cable that goes across the battery connecting the 2 circuit boards. I believe this cable is connected to the digitizer. I was hoping that maybe this would fix my problem. No such luck.
Here is my question. This tablet was purchased on EBay and was sold as a refurbushed tablet with a 90 day warranty from Asus. I purchased it about a month ago so I should be in the warranty period. Since I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it, should I even try to send it to Asus for repair or should I just spend the $65 and buy the replacement parts on EBay? Instead of just buying the digitizer, I was thinking I would get the combo digitizer and lcd screen since it would save me having to use a heat gun to unglue the screen from the digitizer.
What do you think would be my best bet?
Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions.

You can always unroot and relock the bootloader (you can use this to get it back to factory), if it's under warranty I'd go that route.

USB debugging...
Wouldn't this require me to have USB debugging enabled on the tablet? Since I went into recovery and restored it back to factory defaults, I can't get past the "Welcome" screen because I can't touch the screen. I am going to try and chat with the Asus support team and see if I can get an RMA. I'd rather go that route than take the whole thing apart myself. I like messing with computers but I don't like messing with phones and tablets. They are just too small and fragile for my unskilled hands. Thanks for your help. I will post an update if I am able to send the tablet out for repair.

It uses fastboot, I don't think it needs it (in spite of what the OP says). And if I'm wrong, the worst that will happen is it won't work. You will need the fastboot drivers correctly installed in your windows or linux environment though.

worked
Thanks for the link. I ran the dead_nexus7.bat file since I couldn't turn on the USB debugging. It wiped out everything. I then ran the command to relock the bootloader. All set. Talked with Asus (web chat) and got an RMA number. They even sent me a FedEx label to use. Now I am more comfortable sending this unit back since it has been restored to stock and the bootloader is locked again. Thank you for all of your help.

Update to my issue...
I contacted Asus using their web chat. Told the CSR about my issue and confirmed my Nexus 7 serial number. They emailed me paperwork to take to my local FedEx shipping location. It happened to be our local Office Max store. They scanned in the bar-code and processed it. I got a confirmation email with the tracking number. This was around June 6th. They received it in Texas 4-5 days later (because of the weekend). I checked the status almost every day. About 10 days after they received it I saw a status update. They included a FedEx tracking number but every time I entered it into the FedEx website, it showed up as invalid. I gave it a couple of days and then called FedEx. They were able to track the package and it was delivered to my house in late June. All in all it took about 3 weeks but they did repair it. I thought they would have just sent me a refurbished tablet. They actually fixed my tablet because it still had my screen protector on it. Just wanted to update you with the good news. My son was so excited to finally get his tablet back. I wasn't expecting it to take so long but I guess I can't complain. It didn't cost me anything out of pocket even to ship it to them. Thank you for your help with getting everything back to stock and the boot-loader locked.
Tablet was originally purchased as a refurbished tablet from a seller on EBay. It was supposed to have a 90-day warranty from Asus. Glad they held up their end. It all worked out in the end.

[Q] Stuck at "erasing userdata..."

Hello,
Recently my Nexus 7 (2013) battery ran out because I forgot to charge it. Since then, it won't boot back into Android when it's turned on - all I get is the black screen with "Google" written on it. I have searched all over the internet for the past few days, but I'm unable to find a solution. I'm hoping that someone here can help me, because the tablet's warranty has expired and I'm completely out of ideas. Here are the things I've tried or noticed:
I can't boot into Android. The tablet gets stuck on the black screen with "Google" written on it.
I can access the bootloader and interact with the tablet via fastboot.
The bootloader is locked. Trying to unlock it via fastboot oem unlock displays the "Unlock bootloader?" screen on the tablet. After I select "Yes", the command line output on the computer shows the following output, but doesn't get any further:
Code:
...
(bootloader) Unlocking bootloader...
(bootloader) erasing userdata...
Trying to boot into recovery mode from the bootloader results in the tablet being stuck on that black screen with "Google" written on it.
I have removed the back cover from the tablet and reconnected every exposed connector. I couldn't take the battery out because I don't have the appropriate screwdriver. Doing this changed nothing.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated. At this point I'm worried that it is a hardware issue, but I'd like to exhaust all options before declaring it as such, as it would essentially mean the tablet is going in the garbage bin.
How long did you let it sit at "erasing userdata"?
I don't recall specifically on my N7 but I know when I unlocked the bootloader on my 2013 Moto X it seemed like an eternity, which was mostly because there is no progress indicator, it just said "erasing userdata" and sat there for a while. Probably like 5-10 minutes.

Well that is surely too long. Not sure what else to suggest. Someone else with more experience might able to help.. It sounds like your partitions may have been messed up somehow, which I have seen others post about recently with the updates. I'm not sure what causes this or if there are any fixes, but I know there are threads about people being stuck on the Google screen and having issues after the update to 5.0/.1/.2.

Hi,
i had exactly the same problem. I tried everything to fix it and no luck. I had to resort in sending it to Asus for repair. Unfortunately my warranty has expired. I just got a quote from them saying the motherboard has gone and it will cost me £250 to repair!!!!! I almost fell off my chair. A brand new 32gb tablet will cost be around £180. This is surely a joke? I will be giving them a call tomorrow to complain!
I hope yours is still under warranty because it is most likely your motherboard that has gone. I've read a few others having the same issue and its been the motherboard.

Thank you for your response.
I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you. I've been reading around and guessed it's probably a hardware problem based on other people's similar experiences. Unfortunately my tablet is out of warranty as well, and I'm definitely not going to spend more on the repairs than I would on a brand new tablet. I regret purchasing the tablet in the first place, I really expected it to last longer than a year.
If you can, please let me know what ASUS says about this, if you intend to call them. They don't have a subsidiary in my country, but if you get lucky, I might press my chances as well and perhaps I can get this repaired for a reasonable price.
Mine has lasted 5 years more but my Nexus 7 has ended its days the same way as yours. Stuck at google when switched on, and stuck at bootloader when triying to flash it.
Time to go, it seems.

my HTC 10 died!

so, I go on vacation and put my phone in airplane mode since I'm out of the states. I'm backpacking in Aruba and place my phone in my backpack (contents: clothes, towel, water bottle, food) I took pictures from spot to spot. well I go to take my phone out and it is burning up. I mean super hot. Phone would not wake up/turn on. I was bummed.
Had the phone activated and was using it for a total of 5 days, then placed it in airplane mode when I left the states on the 4th. The 5th is when this saddening event took place. I finally got back into the states and got home on the 13th. I pulled my sim and activated my good ol m8. I noticed the backside of my sim card had brown spots on it. Looked like it was burnt or rust. It wiped off leaving faint spots. Sim card is working in the m8.
Has anyone had any issues and had to have their phone repaired? Apparently HTC says this is covered under warranty...and that if there is any other damage than what I described they will use the uhoh warranty.
I have tried every button combo, plugged in and everything day after day hoping it would turn back on. I do not even get a notification light when plugged in. The PC also doesn't recognize the device.
tldr: phone got super hot and wouldn't cut on. I have to send in for repair

If it's been under 30 days, I'd return it as faulty and get another new one. Take advantage of the option to return it!

Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
I've tried everything. Every possible button combo for at least 10 seconds.
It definitely hasn't been 30 days, and I mentioned to return it, and they kept saying that since it was activated and in use, that they will issue a repair ticket. So that was my only option they gave me. I did call back and get another CSR, but they both asked has it been used and or activated. I didn't want to lie lol

Well, you're certainly able to return it within 30 days even if it's been used because I'm going on my 3rd unit trying to get one without the dreaded yellow tint at the bottom of the screen. It can all be done from the ordering email you receive... that is if you ordered it direct from HTC. I just request a refund and re-order a new one, no questions asked!
If the battery is dead and nothing happens when you plug it in with original power and cable then there is nothing to be done.

They don't do that. I tried when I was having issues with my device. Their answer was if I wanted a brand new device, I'd have to return and repurchase. ? (And lose out on my coupon and potentially lose my 12 mos financing with PayPal.)

Yeah, that's what I meant. :good: Return and repurchase.
so I finally heard back from HTC on the 22nd. They said my phone was exposed to liquid....ok I thought maybe the water bottle may have leaked...but here was no sign of it that day. Anyways, I opted to use my UH-OH protection to get a new/replacement device. They processed that and told me I would be contacted in 24 hours. That was not true
Have called/online chatted each day trying to get a status of my phone. Finally got someone today who told me the exact thing. "the uh oh department is waiting on a replacement device for you. You will be contacted by the escalation team within 24 hours"
So yea I'm a little frustrated with HTC at the moment. Never had any problems with them until now.
-HTC One m8-
I just did a separate chat and acted as someone who was very interested in purchasing the HTC 10. Asked all easy questions and then asked for shipping. They said if I was to purchase today, I'd revive the phone next business day.
I'm on the edge about calling back and complaining some more about them able to send out phones if they are purchased, but yet tell me hey are waiting on a device.
sorry, rant over lol
-HTC One m8-
Side note UhOh protection will only ship to your credit card billing address for advanced replacement.
A person can ship theirs in and have a replacement sent to whatever address you want but it requires them receiving the old unit before shipping the new unit.

Well, your replacement phone will probably be coming from a different stock of phones. Even it happens to be a new device rather than a refurb, you won't be getting the retail box or anything. It'll just be the replacement phone by itself.

You should have a service number and a login to track process. You'll be able to see if they've received your handset and where they're at in the process. If it's Uh-Oh protection covered they are required to ship you a new handset within 2 days of receipt of your old handset.

H815 just died - no sign of life at all

I got a text message from a friend around an hour ago. I had my phone on charge at the time and it was about 25% charged. I started typing a reply when the screen froze, went black and the boot screen came on - classic crash and reboot, right. But when the boot screen came up, it only stayed on for a couple of seconds and then went off again and the phone has been completely dead since. Well I tried holding the power button for about 30 seconds and nothing happened. So I tried Vol Up+Pwr and the phone vibrated and the boot screen appeared for a split second and went off again and the phone has been dead ever since. I've had it on charge for about 40 minutes but no joy.
This doesn't seem to be the classic bootloop issue from what I know about it. So can anyone help me out with how I could revive it?

Cheers Gloim. I'll give this a try.
An update to what has been happening - I left the phone with the battery removed overnight. I came down this morning, put the battery in and tried turning it on. The boot screen came up, along with the blue led, which is hopeful as there were no led's last night. The boot screen stayed on the screen maybe 15 seconds before the phone turned off again. I removed/replaced the battery, turned it on, same thing. So I tried booting into download mode (hold Vol UP button, insert usb cable and hold Vol Up until Firmware Update screen.), but the phone started booting up normally. A bit into the boot animation, it rebooted again. So I tried a normal bootup and it got to the lock screen, where it rebooted again after about 15 seconds again. I booted normally again, lockscreen again. This time it refused to turn on again.
So it appears all may not be lost.

any news? It happened to me just a couple of hours ago, was reading some news, the the screen went black with 2 lines on top white and blue, took off the battery put it back on, it started booting but the LG animation hanged up, took the battery of again, and it never turned back on, tried charging the battery for some time, tried removing battery and pluging the charger to see if the screen waked up with the battery logo, tried vol up + pwr, vol down +pwr, it does not even vibrate : S

I'm experiencing the exact same issue. Not the bootloop error, phone just went off and it may or may not power up. Currently it's stuck on the LG splashscreen. Not being recognised by my PC, is there no hope?
Edit: Now recognised by the PC. I'll check the other thread.

No joy at all. I do know its the very common CPU/EMMC problem as I put the phone in the freezer for 15 minutes (in a freezer bag of course) and it booted up, but froze almost immediately and turned off again.
I contacted LG who rang me the following day asking for details and the caller said it is definitely a hardware issue, and if I send proof of purchase showing it was bought from a retailer it would be repaired free of charge. I bought mine from an ebay seller, which I told him, and he said if its an ebay company and not a private sale, it was ok. But if bought from a private seller, its considered 2nd hand and warranty is void, even if it was still sealed in its box, which I think is a bit harsh. Anyway, I thought I had bought mine from a private seller, but it turns out it was an ebay shop. I forwarded the proof of purchase and seller details on Friday and I've just received a call to say they are accepting it for a repair only. Which is less than ideal but they could've just said no I suppose. So when I get it back I'll sell it and buy something with a similar spec instead. Its the best phone I've used up till now.
Ok try ILAPO fix by disabling the2 cores and your phone will be on

Was it still in warranty? Mine only came with the 12 month LG warranty. I bought it in November 2015, so it's out of warranty. I did log a repair with LG and they tried to call me but I missed the call, they sent me an SMS earlier but their offices are closed today. Wondering whether they would consider an out of warranty repair as it's 509 serial number and they were known to be faulty.

I bought mine at the end of December 2015 and I read on their website that there is a 24 month hardware only warranty on the H815. They accepted it for a repair only under warranty, so I'm pretty sure there is an extended warranty period due to these hardware problems. They have accepted that it is an inherent problem so they would be legally bound to offer some sort of extension to the original warranty.
The only problem I can see now is them seeing the bootloader is unlocked and a custom recovery installed. But there was a legal ruling made in the UK several months ago in a case taken by a Samsung customer, that unlocking and rooting a phone is not a breach of warranty where a claim is made for a totally unconnected fault, ie an inherent hardware fault. But if the phone was rooted and overclocked causing cpu or ram damage, or bricked due to flashing an unsupported rom, for example, that would be a breach of warranty. But I get the feeling they would use any excuse to get out of honouring the warranty.
I just hope I get it back soon though. I'm using my old quadcore mediatek N9500 Chinese phone in the meantime and it's driving me mad. I don't remember it being this slow and laggy when I first got it

Interesting thanks. The web site shows 12 months for me? I will definitely give them a call then and see what they say. Good luck with yours.
Just a quick update, I rang LG this afternoon. I was asked a few questions, where I'd purchased from etc., then the agent started to book the repair in. I stopped her to ask whether it would be done under warranty, and she said, yes of course, your warranty is still current. So despite their web site indicating it had a 12 month warranty, it is 2 years. What a relief!

Mine was picked up on Wednesday last week and delivered back today. 7 day turnaround, not too bad at all. I think they put a new board in it though. It's still marshmallow but it has been returned to O2 branding and the bootloader locked. My existing unlock.bin won't work with it either.

2015 Shield TV 16gb fully stock started bootlooping

My Shield running stock 6.2 with stock recovery started bootlooping. I was literally watching Netflix the night before and in the morning it was looping. It shows the Nvidia logo and then there is a video glitch and it loops. I can only boot into safe mode. I tried wiping and flashing the official recovery ROM via fastboot. I tried rolling back to 6.1 and then the 6.3 preview build. No dice. I'm guessing some kind of video driver issue. I have not been able to find anyone having the same issue. Any ideas?
I think I have the same issue.
I have the Nvidia Shield TV 16GB (2017), latest update installed (not roorted).
Plugged it in it worked the whole evening, turned it off, turned on in the morning and it started bootlooping. It is showing the Nvidia Shield logo, stays on it then reboots. Once in a while it actually goes trough and boots till the end, and the strange thing is that, if it manages to boot in to the OS, it works like charm, basically I need to keep that thing forever On, if I power it off, it is bootlooping again.
I got this thing brand new, sealed in the package from eBAY and can not return it to Nvidia, for replacement, so I at least need to understand if this is a software issue or hardware.
If anyone have any idea pleas respond.
Thank you and Happy New Year

Don't screw around, just return it to the eBay seller instead and get a replacement.

I concur, return it, what you are experiencing is definitely not normal, also just my two cents if you got it brand new sealed on ebay aren't you on nvidias warranty?
I don't honestly, I don't have an invoice or any purchase papers or information, to provide to Nvidia for return. You think I should still contact Nvidia?
Btw, I can't return this anymore. Now just need to figure out what to do with it. If it's a software issue maybe i can re-flash the bootloader, recovery or everything. Or if it's a known hardware issue then, that's it.
Your contract isn't with Nvidia, it's with the seller on eBay.
Why can't you just return it to them, or is there something else you're not telling us?

if its brand new all the info you need is on the box as far as your invoice why cant you go to your ebay account and print out a invoice? Return to ebay seller or rma with nvidia if its brand new, their rma policy is excellent as well as their customer service

Question *Urgent Help* Bricked Pixel 6 Pro

I'm kinda screwed here and I really really need some help.
So I basically rooted my Pixel 6 Pro just out of boredom and wanted to tweak some stuff with the rooted version. In the end, I decided that it wasn't worth rooting as most things i can do i could already do on stock like customization and other things. Anyway long story short I've tried to Use the google flash recovery tool I wasn't looking where i was clicking and ended up flashing 12 by accident It *Was on 13 at the time* had it got near to the end but it kept booting me to this one section called "fastbootd" I hit factory reset and from there it done the reset and now the phone no longer starts or doesn't even displays the charging percentage.
I've plugged it into a computer nothing pops up no noise from my computer to say it has connected.
I've also tried to use power + down for 30 seconds - didn't do nothing.
Has anyone got out of this issue? Is this a Hard Brick?
I've plugged it into a charger and will see what happens tomorrow. I genuinely think its the battery has fully drained.
Cause I've ran out of ideas to try things and I need your expertise on this guys.
Your help will really be appreciated.

I assume you didn't flash, at the minimum , the A13 bootloader to both slots or sideload the OTA after updating to A13 before doing this? If not, sounds like your device may have reverted to the A12 slot and ended up a brick due to the new ARB/eFuse shenanigans. The symptoms you describe are what happens when this occurs.
Luckily, it sounds like Google has been good at replacing devices that have encountered this so I would RMA it.

Ahhh I'm from the UK. I only got the phone just a month ago too and now this has happened. I checked on the their Uk site i can take it to a local mobile carrier and they've stated that they will do the repair next day. I might just do that tomorrow if not then I'll speak to Google.

Some News for everyone!
So I spoke to Google and they was fine about it phone not working went through some troubleshooting tricks neither of the options worked. The rep on the phone gave me two options Send it into Google for a repair and they'll send me over a replacement 6 Pro whilst its being worked on. If they can't fix it they'll let me keep the phone but if all is well with the phone then I'll need to return it back otherwise I'll get charged for it.
The second option is sending it in for a repair at a local authorized repair center. Luckily there is one 10-15 minutes away from me but the annoying thing is all bookings are available during my working hours but the place has 5* reviews and can get the phone repaired within the same day.
So I might just go for my second option tbh seems alot more convenient and less hassle of having to send a phone away to Google and wait 10 days for a repair which can be done within a day by a repair center that is less than 10 mins away from me and has all parts available to hand out.
Btw the repair center near me is called Ismash. There's one nearby me in London.
Awesome news! There are at least a handful of other users who have reported getting bricked since Android 13 came out August 15th, and I believe all of them reported good news from Google for repairs, but I don't have any idea if any of them were in the UK, so glad it's going to work out there too.

Great to hear! If you end up taking it to the repair shop, please let us know what repairs they did (I'm guessing replacing the motherboard) and what they said was wrong with it (e.g. If it was an eFuse problem). Thanks and good luck!

i am also very curious if it actually needs a motherplace replacement or simply a reflash using a JTAG (or similar specialized tool) to get it out of the bricked state.

My 6 pro did this last weekend, when I was rooted I decided to flash a file to change the font and I missed the part it would work on 13 as long I deleted a certain file for the lock screen, it boot looped a few times, apparently it tried to load from slot B where android 12 was still flashed, and it hard bricked, no button combo would work, completely bricked, it was fully charged when this happen, so I RMA`d with google and my old device is suppsoed to be delivered to Texas today, then hopefully tomorrow my if I`m lucky that my replacement gets shipped.

Great. If you try again to be on the safe side, download this app and install font manager
GitHub - Fox2Code/FoxMagiskModuleManager: A module manager for Magisk because the official app dropped support for it

Just use termux and type
Code:

Tbh I'm not 100% it works on A13, but I tried it on the a13 beta and it worked.

I can almost 100% guarantee that they fix it through the USB port. When its going into the bricked mode, it is no doubt going into a special recovery mode that isn't documented publicly.
