[Q] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.3][2.3.7 Stable] - Battery life questions

First off, thank you to everyone who contributes to this community! I have been on here for some time now and the help/information available in these forums is amazing!
I hope that I am not being a noob by starting this thread and apologize ahead of time if I am incorrectly posting this. As I do not have very many posts under my belt I am unable to post to the development thread nor does it seem according to the forum rules that I should be posting questions like this there anyway. The last thing I want to do is upset anyone in this fabulous community.
Now down to business!
I am running the "gingerbread-evo-deck [1.3][2.3.7 Stable]" and just have a couple questions concerning my final setup to maximize battery life. I am in love with this ROM and all things deck but do have a couple concerns. Battery life is fantastic for me while phone is not in use but the battery does seem to drain quickly while actually using it. I am currently using Tiamat_Evo-v4.0.6-sbc kernel and have been running it for about a week now.
Q1: Should I be using Tiamat_Evo-v3.3.7-sbc Kernel(or "Lee" as I believe it is commonly referred to)? And, does this kernel offer full support for wimax and hdmi? From what I gather this seems to be the preferred kernel for AOSP ROMs.
Q2: What is proxsensorfix.zip? I saw this as an attachment in the development thread. Is this the fix for the Android System spike in battery stats? Will this improve battery life, and is it compatible with this ROM? Are there any negatives to applying this fix?
Q3: I think I have seen it mentioned that by downgrading the radio from the most recent release that battery life can be improved. Can anybody confirm this? What are thoughts on this?

Q1: 3.3.7 SBC or 4.0.8 SBC kernels have worked great for me on Deck GB 1.3.
Q2: Not sure about proxsensorfix.zip, but the phone.apk w/o proximity is what I use, as I've heard the proximity sensor does use more CPU, which drains battery faster.
Q3: I'm using the latest radio and WiMax, and experience no problems whatsoever.
IMHO, Deck's 1.3 is the best ROM out there hands down. I've been using his AOSP ROMs from the start and have not been disappointed. PM me if you have any questions......

Have you considered using vipermod to undervolt? it will save you more battery

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not done any undervolting yet but was thinking about looking into it.

Okay, I'm pretty settled in on the Lee kernel now and have undervolted 50mv. Things are running pretty smooth.
Another question tho! Is the V6 Supercharger suppose to help with battery life at all? This is not entirely clear to me. And if not, I don't see much need for it as my phone seems to run just fine without it.
Also... android system spike in the battery stats, seemingly after a phone call. Is there a fix for that? This also is unclear.

i just got this phone on thursday
my #1 priority is battery life (including idle time) as i dont get to charge my phone until about 6pm daily on my way back home.
also id like a debloated stripped down rom, without all the samsung nonsense included, this generally improves speed and cuts down on lag.
and the reason i specifically pointed out a tw rom is that they are more generally stable than aosp, from my flashing days all the way back to the hero to evo & photon, the non aosp roms had the most things that worked.
no matter how good the AOSP roms were esp with the EVO 4G, something never worked, whether it was gps, vvm, mms not working etc, so yea id like to steer clear from that, i also kinda like tw and of course cant beat the camera options.
i know the 1st response i would get is there are already a gazzilion questions on this and why dont i go to the dev section and read thru the threads there i find my answer, well ive done that and there are so many conflicting views its hard to get a grasp of how good the roms are vs whether the users are using their phones or not.
im currently on the sprint jb leak, and eh it isint that great, it lags, and the best battery ive gotten out of it is 9 hrs, and it also loses battery when idle (wtf?)

[Q] Battery life: stock VS custom roms and remedies

Hi guys!
I've been playing around with my GNex (GSM, stock 1750mAh battery) since last july and my biggest concern is (still) the battery life.
I've noticed that the couple stock rom + stock kernel (the ones the phone come with) is much better than any other custom rom+kernel.
Here comes my (maybe stupid) question: is the battery life somewhat related to the (de)odexed status of the rom?
I mean, I've been looking for all kinds of solutions to take advantage of those features offered by AOKP or PA without suffering from BL issues, but I find silly to sacrifice stability/smoothness/responsiveness/always-on-connection/brightness/whatsoever to gain not that many mins of juice. And I really wonder what is the sourcery Google adopts to make its roms so stable, responsive and battery friendly (e.g. no custom rom/kernel can achieve as much BL as the stock ones). Put differently, with the stock rom/kernel, I can leave 3G always on, auto-sync always on, haptic feedbacks on, location services always on (but GPS) and the battery survives for more than 24h; while, with custom roms/kernels, I could switch everything in the list off and still the battery wouldn't last that long (ceteris paribus).
Could you, please, explain me how it works?
Is there really no way to improve BL other than those listed above?
And, finally, does odexing the system apps (on custom roms) do the trick?

For me the biggest source of battery drain is the screen by far. Maybe you enjoy custom ROMs more than the stock one and you keep the screen on more I would think that a custom ROM would be more battery friendly. Which ROMs have you tried?

Lol, maybe you're right!
Until now, I tried AOKP and PA roms and franco, AirKernel, GlaDOS and stock kernels (all possible combinations). I found that PA and GlaDOS are the best custom couple, but still not comparable with the factory ones.
However, even tough I have no technical numbers, the usage on custom stuff had been more or less the same as on stock things (although I became a pie-control addict). And what I know for sure, the BL gap is mostly due to screen (i.e. by staring at the launcher home screen for 5 minutes, the battery drains faster with custom roms than with stock roms - still, ceteris paribus).

I know that's strange. Things used to work as you say with my HTC Desire. But since I've switched to the Nexus S (and then to the GNex), I strongly preferred stock stuff just because of battery life

battery life, best rom/kernel

My battery life has been horrible lately, im wondering what is considered the best 4.4.2 rom in terms of battery life, and if theres a potentially good kernel to go along with it. Currently im using slimkat and its better then the CM nightly i was on before but still doesnt last an entire day. I know the battery is probably just getting old, i just want to try to squeeze what i can out of it until i have to replace it. THanks.

Go with Wicked 6.5 IMHO. It's debloated, looks pretty and has tweaks to save on battery already. And the kernel than comes with it is the best available kernel, too: Ktoonsez' KT747 for TouchWiz 4.4.2.

Although I agree with roirraW "edor" ehT suggestion. I would also like to state that the question you pose is subjective at best. Without knowing exactly how you use your device it is difficult to give you a combination that will perform the way you want it to. There are many variables involved in choosing a Rom / Kernel combination. Questions such as , but not limited to : heavy user - light user - power user - do you want just performance - do you lean more towards all out battery life - is lag not an issue - do you have a lot of apps - etc. These are just some of the questions that must be taken into account when choosing a combination for yourself. So it is best to experiment with various combinations until you find the one that is best for you, and how you use your device.
Also it is best to always make a Nandroid Backup when going through the process. That way you will almost always have a safety net .

Im also using Wicked 6.5 and I flashed the stock theme back to it because I dont like cartoon looking stuff lol. But the battery life seems pretty good to me especially just sitting and not being used it drops to under 2% an hour so far which is important to me so I have the phone with some battery left when I actually want to use it. Its also got a pretty good kernel with it and Im using Ktoonservative

Best Custom Rom for Stability and Battery

Hello,
What Custom Rom you guys think its best for Battery Life and Stability?
I've been using CM11 for the last few months and now im Trying Omnirom. They are both stable and use the same battery.
I cannot try every rom, so im asking here for your opinion.

I very much doubt battery life would be any different because of ROM version.
It has more to do with individual usage patterns
&
BT On/active/streaming
Brightness level/Auto
Data On/updates/push services
Calls talk time
Text/chat apps
Wi-Fi/Hotspot on/active
I'd say if your getting nearly 2h's of screen on time then the ROM is just fine.
There may be others getting more, but it all depends on how you use your device.
I don't mind charging my phone 2-3 times throughout the day(to help keep it topped up), I don't use Wi-Fi since I have unlimited data, unless it's for a large occasional download (testing new ROM/apps) have auto app updates and push services on) and leave BT on to automatically connect to my car stereo and start streaming music and also always leave auto brightness on.

Personally, I have tried lot's of different Custom Roms, and to be honest, none of them are as good as Stock 4.3 in terms of battery life and stability. Yes, other ROMs offer additional features and Android Versions that would otherwise be unavailable, but are mostly less stable, more laggy and have worse battery life. If you want customisation, you can root and use Xposed Framework.
That said!.. the best custom ROM that I have used is both FML Kitkat and FML Lollipop by MWisBest.

Recently I went back to 4.2.2 (Verizon) because no roms I could find had decent battery life. I started using greenify to help with memory, as I find that soon as it gets to about 100mb free, the lag is terrible.
So in your opinion FML Kitkat vs stock on battery is worse? I briefly tried FML Lolipop but felt it was too early in dev and buggy

Yeah, I've always found that stock Jelly Bean has the best battery life. But your experiences may vary with usage.

I have used CM11, PA, Shiny ROM and FML so far. I cannot compare them to stock, since I haven't used stock due to lack of customization features.
IMO, Shiny ROM + Dirty V Kernel with Nephilim's settings had the best battery life. On standby, my phone ran for more than 2 days without a single charge. Performance was decent, although I wouldn't say that it was ideal.
I'm currently running on the latest FML Lollipop + Smitty L Kernel with Nephilim's settings. The battery life is decent, with about a day and a half standby time. Performance is fantastic. If you value both battery life AND performance, you might as well give this a try, as it is definitely worth the effort.
