battery life, best rom/kernel - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

My battery life has been horrible lately, im wondering what is considered the best 4.4.2 rom in terms of battery life, and if theres a potentially good kernel to go along with it. Currently im using slimkat and its better then the CM nightly i was on before but still doesnt last an entire day. I know the battery is probably just getting old, i just want to try to squeeze what i can out of it until i have to replace it. THanks.

Go with Wicked 6.5 IMHO. It's debloated, looks pretty and has tweaks to save on battery already. And the kernel than comes with it is the best available kernel, too: Ktoonsez' KT747 for TouchWiz 4.4.2.
Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII with Wicked X v6.5, Ktoonsez' latest kernel and the latest Philz Touch Recovery.

Although I agree with roirraW "edor" ehT suggestion. I would also like to state that the question you pose is subjective at best. Without knowing exactly how you use your device it is difficult to give you a combination that will perform the way you want it to. There are many variables involved in choosing a Rom / Kernel combination. Questions such as , but not limited to : heavy user - light user - power user - do you want just performance - do you lean more towards all out battery life - is lag not an issue - do you have a lot of apps - etc. These are just some of the questions that must be taken into account when choosing a combination for yourself. So it is best to experiment with various combinations until you find the one that is best for you, and how you use your device.
Also it is best to always make a Nandroid Backup when going through the process. That way you will almost always have a safety net .

Im also using Wicked 6.5 and I flashed the stock theme back to it because I dont like cartoon looking stuff lol. But the battery life seems pretty good to me especially just sitting and not being used it drops to under 2% an hour so far which is important to me so I have the phone with some battery left when I actually want to use it. Its also got a pretty good kernel with it and Im using Ktoonservative

Which kernel do you prefer for best battery backup?

I am not asking which one is the best, but which one would you prefer for best battery backup? Samsung's latest release is forcing me to use a custom kernel, but I'd like to know which one I should use as I am not freak about flashing plenty stuffs.
Thanks in advance.
Redpill or uneak or perseus. You can try them all.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, but I don't want to try them all bro. I know they all are great but that's why I asked which one is the preferable for battery backup specifically.
I am on Perseus now, I hope I've made the right choice. Lets see...
Persues is good for battery.neak is battery drainer.my experience
You're not asking which ones the best, but I'll tell you. I have used all the available kernels for my Note 2, and in my experience RedPill is the only one that is giving me consistent and best battery and overall performance. With more and more updates the developer has been adding more and more options. You can also undervolt the CPU and GPU with RedPill for further enhance your battery life. I had huge battery problems on my S3, So i had to go through a bunch of crap like different custom roms, undervolting, under-clocking etc to achieve good battery life. But when i got my Note 2 i used it for a few days completely stock and un-modified. And i was surprised at how amazing the battery life was. But if your having problems i can recommend AllianceRom + RedPill kernel, than undervolt the CPU/GPU (The utility needed to do so comes with the kernel, after flashing there will be an app installed on the phone called STweaks). And do some other minor adjustments to achieve incredible battery life. If you need any help or additional information you can contact me anytime.
I also want to know...
I would also like to know this as well. Since upgrading to 4.1.2 I am having bad battery backup, never thought of switching kernels but now I have to.
Shame on you Samsung....

[Q] What ROM/Kernel should I use?

So I am not a huge veteran with ROMs and such, and I would like to know of a good ROM and kernel to flash on my GS3.
I use my phone mostly for web browsing, e-mail, light gaming, reading, and listening to music. I like the look of Touch Wiz, but I'll try anything. I would prefer a clean ROM, as in one with no bloat what-so-ever. And I have no idea about the kernel, whatever would work good with the ROM would be nice.
I would appreciate links, and thanks for reading.

This thread will most likely be closed, as the productiveness of a ROM and Kernel depend on usage. (How good a ROM is cannot really be judged, as it varies for everyone.) However, I am ready to provide some guidance. I like TouchWiz and its features, but I have found AOSP to be more responsive. For example, in my case, swiping through homescreens or the app drawer seems to be quicker for me on AOSP. I have also found better battery life on AOSP. You lose many features like the eye tracker when switching to AOSP. For me, that wasn't too big of a deal. So here's my current setup:
ROM: SlimBean Build 3 4.2.2
Kernel: dkp 4.2.x
Kernel Settings Adjuster: Trickster MOD
My goal when installing a ROM/Kernel is maximum battery life with good performance. I am not a heavy user, so I am undervolted -75MPU (I believe MPU is the correct unit) each step and I underclock at 1080MHz. At these settings, I still experience a smooth, quick performance along with a great battery life. With the dkp kernel, I use Trickster MOD (Refer to links above for link).
Good luck on finding what you're looking for! There are many great devs here on XDA. All of their ROMs and Kernels provide the best experience with your device! It all just depends how you use your SIII! Have fun!

Thank you very much, as well as the other poster. I had narrowed it down to 3 ROMs, and I chose to flash AOKP, if not I will try Slim Bean, which was my second pick. Very useful thread there, and once again thanks.
I just this phone lil over a week ago first samsung device and I couldnt be happier!! There's so many kick a$$ roms for this phone im not an aosp guy at all.. Im rocking The peoples rom now and I love it its super smooth and battery life is great:good:

[Q] help me choose a ROM

I need some help choosing a new rom. This would be my first custom ROM on my GN2.
Currently in running 4.3 stock and it has terrible battery life and is slow. Stock 4.1.2 was actually way better.
What I'm looking for is:
- touchwiz features. I don't want to lose s-pen
- stable for DD usage
- good battery life. At least a day on moderate usage
- good performance. At least equivalent to stock 4.1.2 or better
- note 3 features would be nice but not a requirement
Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks
You just need to test each and see what you like. Go see development thread and test some.
Touch wiz ones are MeanBean,sky note,ditto, stock 4.3 rooted,alliance
Sent from my lightning fast Note II running MeanBean 2.0 SuperCharged
My votes for Mean Bean....
But agree with eZ,,,, No one but yo,u will know if your satisfied with it.
And no one will be running the phone the same way you do, ie: sames apps, same wireless use, same texting, on and on and on.

Research and see what best suits what you want. If you are looking for stability then a stock based rom would be best. If want more vanilla android the a CM based rom is best. Its all about what you want. I personally use the Jedi Roms cause I like the stock stability with the extras thrown in

Agree with all of the above.. Gotta test and see....
I am on Ditto Note 3 with Agni Kernel and it's smokin' hot! Blazing fast and great battery life.
But still you gotta test them out for yourself.
I would say MIUI, after testing many many ROMS which all in the end was quite a like i found MIUI roms to be devoted to appearance and (perhaps mere coincidence) better battery time.
This is really not a question others can answer for you, as eZ says, test and see, you will in the end find a sweetspot.
Miui= ijunk look/Crapple IMHO
What's best there's no best like all the previous posters told you.
Everything is in my One stop shop for you to choose from!!

I'm not going to recommend anything but you test what appeals to you liking. Cuz we're all different!!

Kernel and Rom for Battery and Screen On Time(SOT)

I have created this thread to get peoples opinion on what they think the best kernel and rom combination is for battery life and screen on time. I would not consider this a thread to be created in the Q&A forums due to the fact I am strictly directing this at Sprint LS980 users, while in the Q&A forum it would be open for everyone. Yet here viewed mainly by LS980 users
I am currently on: Rom: Optimus DE v2.2
Kernel: Stock ZVA
Yes I know I am based on 4.2.2, I decided to give the rom and kernel a chance to see what battery life was like. I have just recently flashed it as of 20 minutes ago and I am hoping that the Stock ZV8 kernel gives me more battery life than Savoca's kernel that was built into the rom.
Overall a great rom stability and performance wise. With stock everything from the Optimus 2.2 rom I had around 4.5 hours of SOT. I did not let the kernel settle either I used it for one day so that may of effected my battery life
So what would you suggest for a kernel and rom setup for awesome battery life and screen on time?
This is solely to help Sprint G2 users with LS980.
***Please include kernel version and rom version also***
***Including Kernel settings and app used would also greatly be appreciated***[/CENTER]
Lets help everyone achieve the amazing potential this phone has!
Thanks in advance!
If everyone ran the same apps, had the same accounts with the same amount of updates (emails, facebook messages, etc...), same calls, messages, brightness level, same stuff turned on (nfc, etc..) Then you could somewhat accurately determine what the best setup is. There are too many factors that could affect battery life besides the rom and kernel. Battery life is ymmv. Threads like these sometimes get heated and nothing helpful really ever comes from them.
Keep your brightness down, use better battery stats to check for wakelocks, and Google to hunt down a fix if you have one.

Sorry, OP. There is a thread for LS980 specific QA discussions. Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-g2/help

[Q] ROMs that enhance battery performance?

I recently bought a used Sprint Galaxy S3, it is the SPH-L710 model.
It works great, I like it, I got it rooted with no problem, and got CWM flashed to it and I'm getting ready to flash a ROM.
I've been searching forums and sites for about 2 days for the ROM I want to use.
I'm mainly looking for something that enhances my battery performance, the reason for this is when I first got the phone, I updated it to the 4.4.2 KitKat when I first turned the phone on and the battery life was terrible, like I would charge it to 100% and use it browsing the web for about 10 mins and lose sometimes upwards of 10+% within that 10 minutes.
I searched around and found 2 Apps that I am using right now, one is a battery doctor type thing, the other is an app called Battery Saver (root) it changes some stuff and is supposed to make battery life better, since I have started using these 2 apps my battery life has increased, but it still seems to drain a little fast. So I would like to try and find a ROM that perhaps has tweaked the battery life.
Does anyone have any opinions on battery life for any of the ROMs here that would work for my device, like perhaps which one that you have tried that extended your battery life? I know I could just try them myself, but I am hoping to save a bit of time and see if anyone has some input.
Also another quick question, is there a way to test my battery and see if its just bad? A friend mentioned that the battery could have just gone bad so I'd like to check that if possible.
A. S3s aren't known for their amazing battery life. My battery does not go very far either, talking on the phone, which I do a lot for work, gobbles up the battery immensely. (Like 100% to 80% in 30 minutes.) Web browsing is another battery hog.
B. ROMs are only going to do so much as far as extending your battery life. Just bear in mind -- the lighter the ROM, the less battery it'll likely consume.
You'll do more to save battery by flashing a custom kernel on top of a light ROM that'll allow you undervolt/underclock. But, you want to make sure you flash the correct kernel to the correct ROM base (e.g. Touchwiz kernel for Touchwiz ROMs, AOSP/CM based kernels for AOSP/CM based ROMs).
I personally use the DKP kernel found here in the S3 original development thread.
Be careful w/ underclocking and especially undervolting, as this can cause the phone to freeze up. It's also important to choose a governor that has a nice balance between performance and power savings. (I like the freelunch governor.)
Hope this helps.

That gives me an idea of what I should start looking for, and I'll check out the DKP kernel as well..
I just thought of another question I had, maybe you can help me with it too.
Since I'm running Android 4.4.2 on my device, would I need to find a 4.4.2 ROM to flash?
For instance could I use a 4.3.1 ROM on my 4.4.2 device?

It doesn't matter which Android version you decide to go with. Just avoid two things:
1. Do not flash an older bootloader than the one you are currently on (e.g. If you are currently on ND8, do not flash any older bootloaders like MK5 or MD4).
2. Do not flash any modems older than the one you're currently on. Your modem version can be found in Settings -->About Phone --> and the last three letter/number combination under "Baseband Version". Hint: The baseband version also tells you which bootloader/ROM you're on.
Doing either of these, will trip Samsung's KNOX security feature, tripping the kill-fuse, and suddenly, you'll have yourself a nice hard brick.
I know that probably sounds intimidating, but I assure you if you avoid those two things, you can flash any D2LTE ROM you please. (D2LTE ROMs will work with the Sprint S3.)
idk man the batter life of my S3 lasts 2 days where my Infuse 4g would last less then one with a new battery.....so by far the best battery life I've had in a while

Wew! Thanks for that info, you may have saved me from a terrible mistake lol.
One of the ROMs I was looking at was using the MD4 bootloader, so that would have been a no-no xD
Thanks a lot for all your help, I learned a few things from it, epspecially about the bootloaders and modems having to match, I had no idea about that. Now that I know that, it opens up a few more possibilities for ROMs I can use!

Fun fact: The bootloaders and modems didn't always have to match.
Samsung wanted to be able to market their devices to business entities, and in order to do that, they developed the KNOX security feature.
Once it's on your phone, it's not coming off. It matters to corporate security policy people, because they want devices that aren't going to be compromised if someone tampers with them.
And, as you can see, the wrong kind of tampering makes the phone completely unusable and unrecoverable.

Right now I'm sort of leaning towards LiquidSmooth, Quantam4, or Tribute ROM, still sort of looking around though.
If you don't mind me asking @Higgs_Boson, which ROM are you using?
Also, to the other poster, my mothers GS3 is the same way, hers will last upwards of a day and a half, then again she doesn;t use hers for much, while I'm on mine like a computer lol.

Right now, I'm on CM11.
I usually switch between two that are my favorites:
CyanogenMod or Paranoid Android.
If you want an all-in-one, there is always PAC-ROM, which includes Paranoid Android, AOKP, and CM all under the same roof. (But then, we get back to that thing about light ROMs.)

personally yes after i replace the system UI with the Stock ND8/NDC one and same with the TW Framework and TWframework-res.apk and use the Stockish theme for it.....i like the stock look what can i say but im using xposed at the same time for little things here and there but if you don't want to replace somethings and want it to work 100% use the PCB theme that it comes with.......but either way its pretty smooth and fast and the battery lasts for 2 days with some gaming and listening to music with viper4android installed and making calls and texting the one thing that i would say drains my battery is watching videos but you'll be satisfied
Wow you arent joking. This is one of the best ive seen lately. Nice.

Wicked X, Tribute and Conquest Singularity are all 3 very good ROMs with pretty fair battery life. As stated, Kernal Settings do make a world of difference! I'm on Singularity with latest KT747 Kernal and love it :]
