New radio in latest OTA? - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

Has anyone else had pretty piss poor reception with the new radio? Ever since updating, mine and my wife's phones get poor signal. Where we use to get awesome signal, now there is either weak or none.
I also notice a lot of times where it shows I have full service, LTE status is shown, but when accessing data it just sits there doing nothing.
Anyone else noticing this?

It's been the other way around for me, I was getting horrible results with the 1.14 radio to the point where people would have intermittent transmission from me and would complain that my voice kept cutting out even with 4 full signal bars and I heard them just fine. The 1.16 radio has fixed that problem for me 100%.

Is it possible to downgrade just the radio?
For me, I noticed that my phone constantly drops my data, it goes from 5 bars LTE to just 5 bars, no LTE logo (therefore no data) then an x in place of LTE with 5 bars, then 3G, H and back to LTE.
I'm s-off and rather go back to old radio or firmware.

To the best of my understanding, as long as you're s-off and have a flashable version of the radio then yeah, you should be able to do so.

Same here. But it's been not so good on both versions. Mine likes to switch from 2g, 4g and lte for no reason all the time. Even in places where I know I have strong lte reception. Also same here with the data not working even though it shows I have service. But I am getting a replacement device today cause my current one the power button broke. So I'm gonna go activate the new one and see if T-Mobile will replace the SIM card as well.

What is the news radio number.

Since you are S-OFF, try the GPE radio, I get much better results with it.

Intermittent phone signal

I've had my HOX now for just over a month and i'm loving it. One thing that is slightly bugging me is that occasionally the phone signal will completely cut out giving me an 'x' where the signal strength normally is and telling me that I can only make emergency calls only.
This will correct itself within 30 seconds or so and go back to giving me a signal. This doesnt happen all the time which has made it harder for me to diagnose. Do you think it is a problem with the sim card (Orange UK network) or is it likey to be an issue with the radio software?
I never had an issue with Orange on my Desire although this is a different SIM card.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
I think this is a common problem I'm on Vodafone and this happens to me. I applied a fix when installing insertcoin Rom a while back and it doesn't do it as often now.
I'm glad this has been mentioned now because my One X (On Vodafone) drops connection all the time. The amount of times that I have been somewhere and needed to transfer money through the Natwest App and haven't been able to is getting annoying now. As I am not rooted I can't try any fixes but I have found by using GSM only around where I live, it won't drop signal half as much or often. I don't have a 3G mast near me so its always dropping connection switching between the two as opposed to a smooth transition.
Hi,
You are not alone. I'm on Orange UK and have seen this problem on quite a few occasions. Unfortunately, as yet I can't see any pattern to understand when it happens or what causes it.
Tim
Happens to me on 3. Sometimes I have to hard reset to get it back.
Glad that its not just me. At least I can rule out an issue with the sim.
As it seems to cover more than 1 network, could it be a radio issue that is addressed in a future firmware upgrade?
It is definitely not just you. I'm in Malaysia on the Maxis network and have this problem as well. It happens randomly - at the most it happens twice in a day.
Do you also sometimes get the message 'Preparing SIM card...' at the bottom of the screen?
I brought my phone to the HTC service centre and they offered to take it in to test the radio. I will do this when I get back from my holiday and keep you guys posted!

I do get that message at the bottom of the screen. I'd be interested to hear what the outcome is once you've had your radio tested.
Yep, it's the [email protected] radio firmware HTC has provided us with. Radio 2.05 is much better. HTC are useless with updates. I've had problems with my network connection for 2 months!

Me too.
Except I am on Tim @ Brasil.
This is nearly always down to signal.
If you're in an area that has decent 2G signal but fluctuating/low 3G signal then the phone will keep trying to connect to the 3G signal. Sometimes it'll be too weak and not be ableto connect and will stick with the 2G signal. If the 3G signal is only just strong enough to connect the phone will switch to 3G mode (dropping the 2G signal). Then it'll realise that the 3G signal is too weak to do anything with (showing an 'X' in the signal area) and drop back to your full 2G signal.
3G signal is breathable which means that if lots of people are connected to the 3G mast then it's signal area (i.e. distance from mast) is reduced. If no-one is using the 3G mast then it's area is bigger.
Perhaps your signal is breathing in and out of use where you are.
Obviously the radio can have an affect too, but with so many people using the same radio software there are going to be some it works well for and others it doesn't.
Personally, I keep my phone on 2G/GSM Only for most of the time and then switch to 3G when I want to use data. I hardly ever get problems with signal, and if I do I shrug and put it down to the coverage in the area I'm in.
P.S. Saying this, my 2G signal seems to drop in and out when I have WiFi turned on. Usually when I'm using wifi I'm not making calls anyway so it doesn't bother me...
Thanks for this useful info. How do I set my phone to 2g only so I can test this theory out ?

It seemed 'good enough' to me, but I only had 2 days with my phone on 2.05 and then my camera wouldn't work at all. So I sent the phone back for a replacement. Crazy it's still not fixed!
I've had 5 faulty phones now.

Which is correct, however any phone working correctly should manage to switch between 2G/3G without problems, i.e. you should not find the phone without a signal at all provided there is 2G coverage, which seems to be the case being reported here. My previous phones with 3G/2G never had a problem, and the HTC One X has been no different for me, it hasn't dropped it's signal, I'm on Vodafone in UK.

This is happening fairly regularly for me on UK T-Mobile. Seems to happen when switching between Orange and T-Mobile or T-Mobile and 3G T-Mobile. I've got a ROM that distinguishes between a 2G and 3G connection in the carrier name area.

Which, and what about it was supposed to be a fix? I'm using MaXimus 2.1.
It happens to me also. I'm on 3 in Denmark. They providing only 3G coverage in area. So far, I figured out that it's happening when I'm loosing signal completly (i.e. when I go down in concrete basement), and when I'm within coverage again, phone is unable to register on any network at all. Sometimes can help turn airplane mode on and off, or sometimes I have to turn phone off and on again.
ROM : 1.29.401.11
Radio: 1.1204.105.14

Anyone notice their service getting worse?

At first I thought it might have been my rom, but it seems it's happening with my GF's note 2 also.
Coverage we used to receive in some areas is almost completely gone. It will show signal and the 4g symbol but basically have NO internet service whatsoever.
On a better note, we've been receiving coverage in some areas we don't usually have it.
I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing due to the attempts to upgrade towers for LTE.
I don't know if it's because of the UVBMB4 update, but t-mobile service has been pretty crappy lately. Period.
We're in the San Gabriel Valley area.
Link for older UVALL4 modem below, people seem to experience better service

I believe my service has suffered as well. Before the last update that enabled our Lte radios, I had great speeds, now it's slowed Way down. I'm in San Diego CA. Hope that it's just as the Op said, LTE towers being updated and what not.

Definitely have noticed a deterioration of service over the past month here in NYC.
Its because for some reason that new LTE APN is slow on HSPA+.. unless you have LTE in your area switch to the EPC APN. You can find the settings online. Its litter ally consistently a difference of 6+ mbps I have extensively speed tested lol..... click thanks if this helped

YES! My service has sucked royally for the past month or so. Data latency/hangups/slowness, and the signal will just completely go away sometimes. I noticed that it started as soon as I flashed the most recent radio too, I'm about to go back to the old one.
Count me in, even my regular phone reception went from 4 bars no 1 or 0!
Can anyone point to towards old radio to flash? I go from no signal downstairs to full bars upstairs...theres an obv issue with new radio.
Yup I've noticed this beginning this week I've made zero changes to the phone. I used to get full bars at work and this week it bounces between full and 1 bar regularly. Theure messing with towers for sure

I was getting about 9/0.6 and with flashing back Im getting... 14/2 Though Ive been on HSDPA 15 & 21. Though Im not getting 4G as much, but it was sporadic anyways and I lost signal...and now I am not. So, Im happy now even though I am on 3G. However... in my corner big red has same problems as they wanted to not have tons of towers in this corner and theres only a ATT Tower....for a decent distance. basically reception fringe. though I am a new subscriber so i haven't experienced normal TMO, I literally got my device yesterday around 6pmish but it def wasn't normal and flashing previous radio did fix it like it solved everyone elses issue

my problems started last friday. i have limited to no service at all; no data, no voice, even no signal at times (circle with line through it, not just no bars). when i do get a signal, the phone refuses to register on the network. when im at home, i have intermittent service. i miss calls, texts wont send, if i do get a working call, it drops after a bit. there are times when it works fine, even on LTE but it never last long. went to the tmo store last night and they gave me a new sim which didnt do squat. already done the factory reset option (twice). phone has never been rooted, all stock. im in the KC metro so not like in the middle of nowhere. they said my next step is a warranty replacement phone if the sim didnt help. not sure if my problem is at all related to everyone elses in this thread, but yeah, service has sucked.
One of the issues, especially if you switch from 4g to edge to gprs a lot, is a setting in the new modem.
It's something called acquisition order. It has 3 settings:automatic, gsm_umts, umts_gsm. In short it tells the phone what kind of network to prefer. It will search for and use that type of network first.
Prior to the latest update it was set to auto. Now it is set to prefer umts. For some reason this has caused an issue I've come to call phantom 4g. Where it'll say 4g with no bars and no data service.
That is my guess. I'll look into it further.

Thanks guys for the heads up on switching to an older radio, I dont have LTE in Miami yet and was having slow internet for the last 3 weeks, I just switched and wow! What a difference. I'm also using the Epic APN.
I also noticed that speeds were degraded after the update. However, there is a simply fix to make your web a tad bit faster....
Go into your network settings, and switch your mobile network from LTE/4g/3g/2g to just 4G/3g/2g
your device will stop looking for an LTE connection and will just utilize HSPA+
Made a world of a difference on my own device. Connecting to the play store, opening web pages, everything was right back to where it was before the update.
Obviously if you live in an LTE area, there is no need to do this...

Really disappointed in the 3g/4g data signal

I've seen threads of people not happy with the data signal, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I was in a movie theater today. I couldn't get any data signal, not even basic google search. I even tried re-booting and still nothing. Picked up my wife's iPhone 4s and it was flying around internet sites.
I tested the same thing afterwards at the local food market and the exact same thing. My phone, no inside signal, her iPhone, perfect.
How can a phone become so popular with such crappy signal?
I've seen complaints too but I've got to say that my One has been on par with my iPhones, Galaxy S3, Blackberry's, etc... No signal issues here whatsoever
The other person on my plan has an iPhone 5 and we both usually have the same amount of signal anywhere we go

The only huge issue I have with it is its TERRIBLE hand-off, at least when my iPhone 5 or DNA lost 4g LTE it would grab it the moment it was available again. The One just holds onto that crappy 3G for dear life until I force it to go to LTE again.
Edit: Or wait 5-10 minutes.

That's weird! I haven't experienced that problem either. I've only noticed my One on 3G once but the hand off to LTE seemed pretty normal to me. I can't really comment on that issue though because my area is pretty much all LTE so I don't deal with the hand offs.
I wonder if it's a defect in your phone? Does the One allow us to update the PRL? I remember the HTC EVO had an update PRL option that I think could do something with service issues... something or other, I can't really remember.

No I don't think it is, GrayWolf has the same issue. I live in Minnesota and frequently travel to jobsites where there is concrete and such. Because Verizon hasn't upgraded every cell site with LTE yet just "Most of them" I frequently go into 3G. When the device goes into 3G for an extended period of time sometimes it takes a reboot to get back to LTE, most of the time it takes awhile to go back. And sometimes it goes right away, it's pretty annoying to be honest and may make me go to the Droid Maxx.
Lte onoff in the market helps me out. It was used for the thunderbolt to turn off the Lte radio when it was new. I toggle to Lte only, wait for it to get a signal them back to cdma+lte

I find my signal is much better on the One than on my previous SIII or SGN.
Samsung has the worst radios. The Galaxy Nexus absolutely blew in that respect and, everyone came up with theories about false calibration of bars and whatnot, but the fact remained that it sucked with weak reception and poor hand-off between 3G and LTE.

[Q] Signal issues UK

Hi. I am on three network UK and since I had the m8 from new, have had intermittent signal issues. One minute I will have 5 bars then it will drop to one bar while I am still in the same place. This is my second brand new m8 now with the same problem as the first. I also have a moto g on three to compare it to, and the reception on the moto g is far more stable. I can't find any posts from the UK of anyone with the same problem. Anyone else having signal strength problems? It affects signal as a whole as in both calls and data.
Im with 3 and have intermittent signal issues but thats nothing to do with the phone or network provider in my honest opinion.
Are you running a custom rom? Might be a radio issue?
Thanks for reply. I am still on stock at the moment because I didn't want to have to un-root and return to s-on etc. While I wasn't sure what the problem is. If you don't think it has anything to do with the phone or the network provider, what do you think it is? As I say, my moto g signal is far better and stronger. I don't get signal on the m8 where I normally have done on all my previous android phones. Thanks for any more input.
I'm on 3 and also have ****ty signal strength, yet I'm able to make and receive calls without issues.
Tbh I think it's an issue with three.
I was with Vodafone back in the day, and use to have full bars yet intermittently I was unable to make/receive calls.
3 appear to have some Gremlins, but after using almost every other provider, oddly they're consistent.

Thanks for reply. Tbh, I have been trying to not take too much notice of what the signal strength bars are telling me and just trying to use it anyway. But it just seems strange to me that I have only just started seeing this happening since I got the m8. As you say, three have been consistent, and for me, they have been consistently good. I now find the m8 not having data connection and no bars where before, other handsets are fine. Oh well. Thanks for your reply.

Hi. I have sent mine in for "repair" now, but am not holding out much hope that it will be working any better when it gets returned from HTC. I am in Hereford, west midlands.
Got the same, now on a second device thanks to the local thieves;anyway both handset's had the signal bar observation you made in the post.
So I'm guessing it's 3's network.
I'm in South east London.
Data & voice are a bit hit & miss
Cheers

Thanks for reply. I think what i'll do when I get my device back, is to try a few other networks sim cards and see what happens. Perhaps I should have tried that a bit sooner but as I never had trouble before, it didn't really occur to me that it could be the network not playing nice with the phone. Thanks for all the replies guys.
I've been noticing signal problems too with three. I'm in Northern Ireland. I tweeted them and they said they were aware of a mast issue near where I live.

I tried EE, Vodafone and three and all had the same problem, left it on top of the desk and watched as the bars randomly switched from 3 to 1 and to none, got my device back so will test and see if it's better

I had been with 3 UK for about 5 years and a couple of years ago I had a Desire HD and I was experiencing the same exact issues except sometimes the signal would get lost completely and even airplane mode or phone reboot would not register with the network again but since then they have improved the network (a little), I can tell you there is nothing wrong with your phone or the radio. 3 have great deals but their coverage is very patchy I am now with o2 UK and have not had any problems with reception or dropouts. one more thing; a bad simcard can cause reception issues so you might want to try another sim from 3 to see if that helps at all.

Ok. Cheers for the info. I have always found three to be fairly consistent in a good way in my area and surrounding. I have ordered two new sim cards since my original and still have the same issues. Cheers.

I have exactly the same issue however it doesn't seem to effect the usabilty of the phone. I had a Note 3 before which also suffered the same issue so I would assume it is Three.
I think Three are in the midst of a big 4G switch on and from what one of my pals in the store said they are doing a hell of a lot of work on the masts at the moment. I do however have a more consistent signal with the M8 with regards to signal stability (not the bars)
You may want to look at getting an app which measures the actual -db rather than bars. It may be that you are swapping between a couple of masts.
Have a look at Opensignal or this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.signalmonitoring.gsmsignalmonitoring

Was with Three when I had my Note 3, always 2 bars but calls and texts went through fine. Decided to dump them and head back to O2 and five full bars and full signal wherever I go. Three = Not that great IMO

I have been trying not to take too much notice of the bars and just use it anyway but it still doesn't seem to be working as well in certain places, as my other handsets have previously on three. Oh well. I just took out another 2 year contract with three. I'll see how the network performs over this time and make a decision when the time comes.

Awful LTE signal after update

I have an unlocked 10 running on T-Mobile US. I previously had no problems at home with a 4G LTE connection. But after updating to 1.53.617.5 this week, my LTE signal at home has completely disappeared on me. What's worse, the phone shows full bars, and won't drop to a slower connection. I have to manually switch to 4G/WCDMA (Auto) and use the slower 4G connection, which I presume is HSDPA.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I even did a factory reset, but it didn't help whatsoever.
Between this and the weak Wi-Fi, I'm starting to have second thoughts about this phone.

My LTE and wifi signal are slightly weaker on the 10 than what I'm used to seeing. Also on Tmo US. My LTE drops when I'm not upstairs lol. I took the ota when I first started up the phone so I can't speak for the other version.

Does it stay on LTE even though you have no reception? Mine does, and it also shows full bars.

Yeah mine doesn't do that. Switches to 4g
Have you tried doing a factory reset?
Maybe try wiping the cache partition? Check the "weak Wi-Fi signal" thread for directions on how to perform it. Just a suggestion.

I just tried wiping the cache partition. No dice.
I installed the OpenSignal app to see what's going on. It seems that the phone is locking onto a cell tower that's many miles away (in the middle of a river!), instead of many LTE cell towers that are only a block away from me. This makes no sense. It also indicates full reception.
The latest update definitely messed something up. Perhaps it's related to the "Wi-Fi stability enhancements".
unlocked htc 10 on tmobile. getting only 0-1 bars in my house . texts dont send and occasional dropped calls at various times. what could be the problem?

I have this problem as well, spoke to T-Mobile and of course they tried to blame it on the phone saying that they cannot guarantee that an unlocked phone will work with their network. I proceeded to tell them that the phone was listed as fully compatible with T-Mobile's LTE network they had no answer. I know it's not a solution at all but I'm on T-Mobile's prepaid service so at the beginning of next month just before I need to make a payment I'm switching to AT&T to see if that is any better
I'm somewhat disappointed and I really don't know if I should return the phone or not

While I do think the 10 doesn't get a signal as strongly as other phones do (my S6 was great), I think the latest firmware (1.53) has impacted reception for the worse.
Wait till HTC release T-Mobile RUU , you can change your mid, cid to tmo and flash it.

I shouldn't have to flash the phone to get it to work. Also, the purpose of getting the unlocked version was to have a carrier-free phone.
The more I use this phone, the more I notice that LTE connectivity is screwed up. It likes to lock onto the wrong cell towers that offer no reception (but still display full bars).
What's interesting is that when I turn on Wi-Fi, the phone locks onto the correct cell towers.
Forget the camera; HTC needs to resolve all these radio connectivity issues!

I agree the purpose of getting the unlocked phone was to not have to have a carrier branded device. I noticed that as well with the phone connecting to be incorrect tower. It really is frustrating because I've already started paying for my phone so I don't want to have to return it, I like all aspects of it physically but something has to be done about this reception. I used to get 4 to 5 bars and now I'm lucky if I get two
This is really ridiculous, I've only had my phone off the charger for just over an hour and I've used 10% of battery. I don't keep Wi-Fi on all the time I only had to turn it on to use Wi-Fi calling because my signal is so bad, HTC really needs to do something with the radios in this phone because the poor cell signal is just killing my battery life. Is anybody experiencing this same problem?
Here's a screenshot

You have a massive wake lock. Your issue doesn't reside with the radio.

Root your phone and then install better battery stats or gsam or any other utility that can show you specific wakelock stats and info. From there you can use that info to track down the specific wakelock.

Perhaps it's an app that's draining your battery.
I found that the Wi-Fi activity stat is wrong. Even on airplane mode, my 10 says that Wi-Fis active.
