When I look at the battery usage, I can see Mediaserver is below screen in terms of battery usage.
Any idea what it is?

I recall it has something to do with corrupted media file (picture, music file etc) or failing to play streamed video. Reboot your phone and DO NOT start gallery, camera or anything that reads media files from phone. Use the phone and report back.
EDIT: I also recall this is an android issue, not spesifically HOX issue..
I did not have that on Galaxy Nexus, now it's there on One X, despite using it in the same manner, same apps. Hopefully it's simply some software bug.
I'll try restarting later today...
It seems to start on my HOX when I plug it into my monitor through the HDMI.
Unfortunately, even with the power adapter plugged into the HDMI adapter, it still uses more power than it can get through charging, which is really rather annoying and makes it pretty pointless in having HDMI out. How can they have designed it this way?
mediaserver system wakelock
Hi, i am having a nightmare with the system (*wakelock*) mediaserver process. Everytime i start listening to music either through stock music player, poweramp, winamp or realplayer, I can see it burning my battery.
I am using Badass battery monitor app. I tried soft resets multiple times but the problem appears again everytime i play music. It is using far more battery % than the music app itself.
I have deleted all music and pictures on my phone, leaving only the ones that came with phone, but the problem still crops up when i play the music.
On my first day of use I managed to get good battery hours.
i980.photobucket.com/albums/ae289/golo83/mob/bad7989c.jpg
then went downhill with mediaserver...
i980.photobucket.com/albums/ae289/golo83/mob/a02203a2.jpg
any ideas?
bump. anyone?
today i got
18.4% system (*wakelock*) -- it had CPU usage 1h 23m, keep awake 1h 35m, number of wakelocks 31
6.2% Music.
40% screen.
I've been having the same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. It has been very frustrating because my battery will last only about 4/5 hours with light - moderate usage. For the life of me I cannot figure out what is causing this wakelock all of a sudden. My phone was completely fine on 4.03
Hello,
I have the same problem. I have just charged my phone. And one hour later the Mediaserver has used 3% of the battery.
I have make one "normal" phone calls, sent 3 text messages and send 2 messages with Viber.
I haven't actively used "anything" (as far as I know) that uses a mediaserver?!
Hi everyone!
OK, I have pretty much isolated issues with battery since I found faulty wiring with Samsung USB cables that come with their chargers.
Not everyone will find issues with the USB cable, but the way it is made will be an issue eventually.
One, the cable is very thin and flexible, so many will stretch over a near by wall outlet to use the charger while using the tablet.
Eventually the wire at the connecter on the tablet end gets bent up to 90 degrees, Eventually causing two issues. One intermittent charging. The other a short. I have had both happen since Owning it in November 2013.I almost had a fire, as the plug had a meltdown. Super dangerous!
Now while messing with trimming down apps and memory, I found a few apps that I use have the ability of keeping the CPU and GPU at their highest frequency. They call it boost mode. Even if you have it disabled, toggling it on and off may clear out the setting if you notice your tablet's battery depleting fairly fast and heating up on the left side.
Now for a odd issue with Google apps... I removed the Google Play Music Player, and disabled DRM/Downloads and made a few adjustments to Media Server. What happens is Music Player will cause playback automatically and Media Server will loop into high CPU usage even during reboot. DRM and Media server can cause this condition quite easily. So far Google is not working on a fix for JellyBean. Only KitKat has this fix, all other previous Androids,Gingerbread for example, do not have the issue. Corrupt files or files with _ or strange symbols will cause this loop until the tablet is turned off completely and restarted.

Oh here is more about draining batterys with 4.2.2
Many who don't have battery drain issues are running 4.2.1 or earlier.
Google Music Player after December 2013 will drain the battery on 4.2.2 ROMs.
Found Samsung OEM USB / Charging cables too weak and flimsy. Gone to Blackberry / Sony / Ericson cables, as they are the best in the business for OEM cables. Not only they are robust they have built-in passive filtering for high throughput connectivity. Also they allow for a good quality USB extension cable to be used with fast charging. I do not recommend any combined lengths beyond 1.8 Meters, or 5 Feet.
Use nomedia in folders not containing media on the SD card. If you are not sure about how to properly use nomedia, redirect your Internet browsers cache to SD, and copy the file from the cache directory anywhere that is needed.
Remove or edit any '_' in a media file's name, as media will run constantly when detecting an underscore.
Watch the data and battery tools in the android system, to assist in diagnoses of rogue apps running.
Beware of Xposed modules... I ran across a few that their updates caused slow booting and errors. Watch your Xposed log after a few reboots with any Xposed updates.
I'll repeat myself from the original entry on top of this thread... Watch for any module or app that has boost/benchmark capabilities. Disable it by all means. I have tweaked with OC tools with custom ROMs and found very little benefit. For those who scoff, here are my current battery and performance info for daily activities.
Charge rate while on AC and active: 20% every 45 minutes.
Sleep with Wifi on during a 12 hour period, total drain: 3%
Drain per hour while being active: 10%
Drain per hour Miracasting Netflix to tv: 12%
Netflix operation no lag or sync issues with high resolution. Note: this is with small tweaks with a stock ROM.
Even with performance tweaks for audio and CPU throughput. No overclocking or under volting was performed. I probably would get better battery drain performance by removing Viper4AndroidFX and keeping with OEM audio driver.
Here are my tweaks.
Xposed App Settings... 220dpi 1000x1600 even though stock parameters default to 320dpi, the system defaults to 180dpi and needs overridden.
360 security with active Android security patch update (Works when you do a manual full scan) and built-in app performance & cleanup tool.
Greenify & Xposed donation with Greenify extras.
Xposed boot manager.
Disabled Google Music Player.
Viper4androidFX set to Medium efficiency with Neon driver.
Trickster Mod with settings for 1024 cache, Zbuffer, and Ondemand set.
Hello,
Lately, my note 8 started to feel warm while I'm using it...
So I decided to watch CPU temperature using System Tuner:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.pmw
First, temperature of the atmosphere here nowadays is about 35c to 40c...
for my note 8:
In idle mode, temp is about 40c, while normal using (wifi off, bluetooth off) like watch videos, using apps,
CPU temp is about 50c and battery is ~38c to 40c
sometimes while gaming, CPU temp could reach ~60c
The tab from the back left side is feeling warm
Is these temps normal??
What's your readings?
Note: I'm rooted on stock 4.2.2, and I didn't modify anything..
I just set the max freq at 1GHZ after overheating

Removing, disabling, or freezing Google Play Music will fix battery drain and temperature issues. Though there are thousands of apps that are buggy, since everyone has different tastes there is no real way to point out exactly what app outside of Googles Play Music that is causing drain without going into system and looking at battery. The top two items listed are the cause of your battery drain. Display should always be on top unless using GPS, Games, or Media without power adapter. Google's Play Music will cause Media Adapter to index in back ground. Depending on media type and media name, Media Adapter will run for 30 minutes to hours on end draining battery as well. 4.2.2 has a bug with media names, So using Windows or Apple's media management to create folder and names can be your issue as well. Search for any media with "_" in the name or folder.

Google play music is disabled long time ago.
I'm also aware of the media storage drain issue...
That's why I wished to upgrade to 4.4.2 to end the media drain issue.. but kitkat seems buggy too as many users confirmed that.
Also, I've no battry drain problem, it's just overheating!
My battery can last for about 8 hours without charing
ONLY OVERHEATING

Sounds like a hardware issue... if still under warrenty on the Date of registration, I would do a factory reset and call it in.

No, my warranty is void...
I downloaded 2 different apps to check the sensors in note 8.0
it doesn't have temperature sensor at all!
How system tuner could give me CPU temp?? or it's just fake?!
Hi, my g3 has this problem where the battery seems to drain very fast on moderate to minimal use. When it's in use I use it for browsing the Internet and maybe Facebook, nothing too energy burning, yet it burns the battery like I'm using it for a demanding task. The battery usage has nothing unusual (I don't think) just 39% and the rest is split between tasks. What might be causing this? Since the start of typing this thread is gone from 25 percent to 8 percent, and is very hot again. What might be causing this?
LG G3 d855
16 gb
2gb ram
Android 5.0
Also has one other problem where there is 5gb being used in the misc section for 'system' is this normal? Because that's a large portion of the 16gb gone.
Thanks in advance.
hi, did you make a hard reset to your phone after upgrading to 5.0?
I bought the phone with it all installed so I can only presume that they did that themselves, it was definitely factory reset when I bought it, I know that much.

I have to revive this thread because the battery life on this phone just renders it useless. I temporarily downgraded from lollipop to kitkat which improved the battery life hugely, I've now rooted it and installed a custom rom (cloudyg3) and the battery life is once again awful. Can anyone suggest anything? The phone is used on and off throughout the day, but even on standby it burns the battery.
Thanks

Use battery info in setting to find out which app eat more battery. After that remove that app (if you dont need it, of course)

The screen uses the most at 29 percent followed by messenger at 13 percent and Spotify at 10 percent, I use Spotify most the time, messenger is quite important too. Also the battery seems to have a rapid drain directly after its been on charge, that then levels out after a good 30 percent is gone.

This might sound odd, but have you checked your accounts in settings to make sure nothing is syncing indefinitely? I've had several customers with issues related to their Google account (or sometimes other accounts on the phone) constantly attempting to sync without ever completing. For example, under one customer's Google account settings, the sync wheel next to "Sync Contacts" would never stop spinning (or would remain stuck on the screen). His phone was quite warm, and his battery life was awful.
Unchecking the affected box, rebooting the phone, and re-enabling sync AFTER ensuring that the phone wasn't heating up for any other reason appeared to fix the issue. I've seen similar issues with non-Google accounts as well.

It's definitely not a syncing problem, there isn't really much for my phone to sync to be honest, and i rarely get the syncing wheel on the screen.
Today, my battery died in 2 hours from a full charge, all i was using it for was mapmyride (which tracked me using gps) and for some reason facebook messenger used 23% even though I haven't used it. I think i'm just going to downgrade to 4.4.4 i'm sick of these battery problems.

[Q] "This app is using a lot of battery" notifications for Spotify on G3 Lollipop
I am using Spotify on LG G3 with Lollipop update installed (Build number: LRX21R.A1421650137, Software version: V20h-EUR-XX) and I keep getting a notification from "Android System" that "This app is using a lot of battery", asking me whether I want to close it (see attachment).
I don't get this notification for any other apps (even the ones that use a lot of battery), and while Spotify does seem to use too much battery, it is not significantly more than other apps (at least as far as I can see).
I am all in on Spotify, so even if it's true, I would like to disable this notification, but because it is a system notification, I can't turn it off, but it pops up ALL THE TIME, and is driving me mad.
Has anyone experienced similar issues, or know how I make the notification go away permanently?
There also seems to be a G3-specific Reddit thread about this issue (I can't post the link, because I am a new user.)
Same stuff is happening to me. I think it's just the amount of batt Spotify consumes. I noticed is draining far more batt than PowerAmp for example. Hope they improve the app.

There is nothing to improve, Spotify accesses the network to load your music. This uses more energy than Poweramp could use, no wonder! Still the power consumption is nothing compared to the screen or whatever.
Everything is fine with that and the problem is just this useless notification. I also did not find a solution by now. Interesting thing is that I have a LG G3 too, but I can't imagine this to be device specific. Isn't that a lollipop "feature"?

I don't think this is a fair assessment of the problem. Other music player apps which conceivably have the same type of usage, e.g. Google Play streaming which I also tried out, certainly didn't cause this warning. In fact, no other app of any type on my phone causes this problem, some of which use more battery than Spotify.
The warning that appears from the Android OS seems to based on real battery statistics gathered by the OS. If I click on the nofitication, it takes me to the battery up that is built in to Lollipop, which shows battery usage percentages for each running app. Spotify is indeed very high up on the list, and based on these statistics seem to cause the battery to detoriorate faster than normal.
The way I see that there is one of three possibilities:
Spotify, for some unknown reason, uses much more battery than it should, e.g. there is a long thread on Spotify community about Android and massive battery drain. This seems to be anecdotally related to "keep awake" and/or SD card. On pre-Lollipop versions of Android, there was no system-level battery usage statistics so people could not point a definite finger to the problem, but with Lollipop the system can for the first time record and notify this higher-than-normal battery usage.
Spotify battery usage is within normal limits and there is a bug in Android battery usage notification/statistics that is causing this notification to show up incorrectly.
Sptofiy battery usage is within normal limits, there is no bug in Adroid battery usage notifications, but in LG G3 Lollipop ROM, LG messed something up in Android which means the notification shows up incorrectly.
It has to be one of these three issues, anything else is not a possibility. Regardless of which one it is (hopefully whoever caused the problem will acknowledge and fix it eventually), it drives me mad that this notification keeps popping up every time I use Spotify and there is no way for me to disable it, because it is a system level notification.
I believe it is ultimately a flaw in Android OS or LG ROM that there is no way to take note of and turn off this notification, even if it is valid.
What is strange is that I have not seen this issue reported for other Lollipop devices, e.g. Nexus 5/6. It seems to be G3-specific at the moment. As I mentioned before, there is a G3-specific Reddit thread about it as well, which I can't paste the link to at the moment (nor can I post the link to Spotify Android battery drain thread...)

==============
...it's still the memory bug, I quote; "It seems one of the bugs that plagued Android 5.0 Lollipop is still haunting some users who recently updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop, the first major update to Android Lollipop.
Some users have reported a memory leak issue in the Android 5.1 update that causes apps to crash and even fills device's memory." (gadgetsndtv.com)
Sorry but I agree with rikoe on this one. if this is an Android 5.0 issue, I would have seen the same alert on other applications (I use like 40) none of them are showing up this alert, only Spotify.
Then I tested it about batt consumption. While POWERAMP uses 5%-6% for 1.2 hour of music playing, Spotify uses 10%11% (playing only saved songs and not using 3g or 4g at ALL, only 2G with streaming disabled)
Spotify needs to improve the app.
I see this notification when using TuneIn Radio Pro, which suggests its not a Spotify specific issue.
Naturally TuneIn Radio does use a lot of battery whilst streaming over 3G / 4G, especially if I'm also playing that stream at high volume through the phones speakers. The same I assume is true with Spotify.
I find this notification to be very irritating. Whilst this function might have limited uses in identifying rogue apps which are have significant battery drain, I am fully aware that in this instance my chosen use of my phone will result in faster than normal battery usage. I don't need a notification constantly alerting me to this, especially a notification in the style of Lollipop notifications, which even after seeing this issue for several weeks I still automatically assume to be a genuine notification (FB, Whatsapp etc) rather than an annoying system warning which I can't disable.
My best guess (based on this not being reported for any other device, LG or not) would be that this is an option built in to Lollipop which LG have either chosen to enable and/or set the threshold for activation too low. If LG insist on having this sort of option it needs to either be tucked away in the Battery Settings section, to be viewed at will, or it needs further functionality to allow me to 'approve' TuneIn Radio, Spotify or any other high battery usage app.
LG do seem to like to baby their users, whether that be through this particular issue, constant volume warnings or telling me to unplug my fully charged phone to save power. I don't like it and it isn't improving their chances of my next phone being another LG.
Let's hope they fix this quietly with the next update.
I believe, it is in the LG Rom. Because I have been using AOSP for 4 months and I've never had this problem until I updated to LG lollipop rom. Vs985
Another LG G3 user here.
I had this issue on LG stock lollipop, it dissapeared when I installed Cloudy 2.1. Yesterday I upgraded to Cloudy 2.2 and the problem reappeared.
I am now trying another lock screen (echo) to see if it dissapears.
Also happens with Spotify on the LG G Flex 2. Slightly ironic considering it came with Spotify (or at least the Sprint variant does).
I'm getting this popup for different programs, all are listed as using 0% since last full charge (which I do once per day)
I was just searching this issue for my LG style 2 plus... I have android 6.0.1. Like martenw I get 0 battery usage since last charge, however the app causing me issues is jet audio. So I was really hoping someone has made an xposed module to turn this nuisance alert/warning off...
