Q: Mediaserver - consuming battery?

When I look at the battery usage, I can see Mediaserver is below screen in terms of battery usage.
Any idea what it is?

I recall it has something to do with corrupted media file (picture, music file etc) or failing to play streamed video. Reboot your phone and DO NOT start gallery, camera or anything that reads media files from phone. Use the phone and report back.
EDIT: I also recall this is an android issue, not spesifically HOX issue..

I did not have that on Galaxy Nexus, now it's there on One X, despite using it in the same manner, same apps. Hopefully it's simply some software bug.
I'll try restarting later today...

It seems to start on my HOX when I plug it into my monitor through the HDMI.
Unfortunately, even with the power adapter plugged into the HDMI adapter, it still uses more power than it can get through charging, which is really rather annoying and makes it pretty pointless in having HDMI out. How can they have designed it this way?

mediaserver system wakelock
Hi, i am having a nightmare with the system (*wakelock*) mediaserver process. Everytime i start listening to music either through stock music player, poweramp, winamp or realplayer, I can see it burning my battery.
I am using Badass battery monitor app. I tried soft resets multiple times but the problem appears again everytime i play music. It is using far more battery % than the music app itself.
I have deleted all music and pictures on my phone, leaving only the ones that came with phone, but the problem still crops up when i play the music.
On my first day of use I managed to get good battery hours.

today i got
18.4% system (*wakelock*) -- it had CPU usage 1h 23m, keep awake 1h 35m, number of wakelocks 31
6.2% Music.
40% screen.

I've been having the same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. It has been very frustrating because my battery will last only about 4/5 hours with light - moderate usage. For the life of me I cannot figure out what is causing this wakelock all of a sudden. My phone was completely fine on 4.03

I have the same problem. I have just charged my phone. And one hour later the Mediaserver has used 3% of the battery.
I have make one "normal" phone calls, sent 3 text messages and send 2 messages with Viber.
I haven't actively used "anything" (as far as I know) that uses a mediaserver?!

How to kill battery drain issues without an app

Hi everyone!
OK, I have pretty much isolated issues with battery since I found faulty wiring with Samsung USB cables that come with their chargers.
Not everyone will find issues with the USB cable, but the way it is made will be an issue eventually.
One, the cable is very thin and flexible, so many will stretch over a near by wall outlet to use the charger while using the tablet.
Eventually the wire at the connecter on the tablet end gets bent up to 90 degrees, Eventually causing two issues. One intermittent charging. The other a short. I have had both happen since Owning it in November 2013.I almost had a fire, as the plug had a meltdown. Super dangerous!
Now while messing with trimming down apps and memory, I found a few apps that I use have the ability of keeping the CPU and GPU at their highest frequency. They call it boost mode. Even if you have it disabled, toggling it on and off may clear out the setting if you notice your tablet's battery depleting fairly fast and heating up on the left side.
Now for a odd issue with Google apps... I removed the Google Play Music Player, and disabled DRM/Downloads and made a few adjustments to Media Server. What happens is Music Player will cause playback automatically and Media Server will loop into high CPU usage even during reboot. DRM and Media server can cause this condition quite easily. So far Google is not working on a fix for JellyBean. Only KitKat has this fix, all other previous Androids,Gingerbread for example, do not have the issue. Corrupt files or files with _ or strange symbols will cause this loop until the tablet is turned off completely and restarted.

why??? I have no issues.
Oh here is more about draining batterys with 4.2.2
Many who don't have battery drain issues are running 4.2.1 or earlier.
Google Music Player after December 2013 will drain the battery on 4.2.2 ROMs.
Found Samsung OEM USB / Charging cables too weak and flimsy. Gone to Blackberry / Sony / Ericson cables, as they are the best in the business for OEM cables. Not only they are robust they have built-in passive filtering for high throughput connectivity. Also they allow for a good quality USB extension cable to be used with fast charging. I do not recommend any combined lengths beyond 1.8 Meters, or 5 Feet.
Use nomedia in folders not containing media on the SD card. If you are not sure about how to properly use nomedia, redirect your Internet browsers cache to SD, and copy the file from the cache directory anywhere that is needed.
Remove or edit any '_' in a media file's name, as media will run constantly when detecting an underscore.
Watch the data and battery tools in the android system, to assist in diagnoses of rogue apps running.
Beware of Xposed modules... I ran across a few that their updates caused slow booting and errors. Watch your Xposed log after a few reboots with any Xposed updates.
I'll repeat myself from the original entry on top of this thread... Watch for any module or app that has boost/benchmark capabilities. Disable it by all means. I have tweaked with OC tools with custom ROMs and found very little benefit. For those who scoff, here are my current battery and performance info for daily activities.
Charge rate while on AC and active: 20% every 45 minutes.
Sleep with Wifi on during a 12 hour period, total drain: 3%
Drain per hour while being active: 10%
Drain per hour Miracasting Netflix to tv: 12%
Netflix operation no lag or sync issues with high resolution. Note: this is with small tweaks with a stock ROM.
Even with performance tweaks for audio and CPU throughput. No overclocking or under volting was performed. I probably would get better battery drain performance by removing Viper4AndroidFX and keeping with OEM audio driver.
Here are my tweaks.
Xposed App Settings... 220dpi 1000x1600 even though stock parameters default to 320dpi, the system defaults to 180dpi and needs overridden.
360 security with active Android security patch update (Works when you do a manual full scan) and built-in app performance & cleanup tool.
Greenify & Xposed donation with Greenify extras.
Xposed boot manager.
Disabled Google Music Player.
Viper4androidFX set to Medium efficiency with Neon driver.
Trickster Mod with settings for 1024 cache, Zbuffer, and Ondemand set.

Battery percentage dives suddenly

Hello everyone,
Would like to raise a matter about the battery life.
I have updated tostock 4.2.2 recently, I have noticed recently that the battery life is being awkward the least. The device can hold up to 4 days ideal but when I start using it the battery percentage dives rapidely it can go down in 20% if the screen is on for 10 minutes. Did anyone experience this and know how to go around it? Im really troubled as it wasnt like this in 4.1.2 it could hold up to 5 hours of screen now it can barely keep with 2-3 hours!

My charge and battery drain thread is here somewhere...
You can look in settings, battery... let us know what is tops on the list.
Also look at settings, data... let us know what is tops as well.
Note: Most of the time the trouble is with google music player, this years update sux with 4.2.2. If you have 4.1.1 it is no problem.
4.2.2 also does not like media files with odd names and characters. I had to rename all my music files to 2 digit numbers, for the media to stop indexing. Folders don't seem to be the issue, just the files. I get 3% per 12 hours discharge with wifi on while sleeping disconnected from charger, and about 10% per hour under a mix use. Thus able to have 8 hours before charging. I can possibly get a week out of the tablet having sync off, power saver enabled, and Wifi off when disconnected from battery in sleep.

use power saving mode, and download Advanced task killer. Kill all apps running in the background whenever u are done or not using the tablet. and clear your "Recent applications". that should increase the battery life significantly

I will search your thread cause I have this huge battery drain problem too.
I'm on 4.2.2 for long now but for 1 or 2 months now, my battery drains very rapidly when I'm watching movies or series ... I can use the samsung player or MX player it's just the same ...
When I'm 100%, i loose more than 10 % in 15 minutes of watching ... in fact my train travel in the morning is 30 minutes, and If i'm watching a movie, during the trip I loose nearly 30 % !!!
The thing is when I'm playing games or do something else, there is no such drain ... and as you I get only approx 3% or 4% per 12 hours discharge with wifi on while sleeping ...
This drives me crazy ...
At 56% at 3:00 pm today (I'm french), since a discharge at 6:00 am, my batteries info from parameters are :
Screen : 39 %
Network / Radio function : 33% (what is this ?)
MX player : 16 %
Sleep mode : 3 %
And the rest is under 2 or 3 % ...
For example, I watch a movie for only 30minutes today and played Zombie Tsunami for approx 20 minutes wich only drains 2% on the battery monitor ...

I wonder if your using data connection instead of Wifi...Data would draw more power when used, that is probably why you see Network/Radio about as high as screen. I have MX player pro as well so it is not an issue with MX player.
When I watch Netflix I get about 12% an hour drain with Miracast activated. As for playing video files on SD, it can be a lot lower to a lot higher depending on size and bit rate. Remember media playback has a number of things going on, speaker / earphones, video quality, and screen brightness will draw power at higher levels. I suggest doing a test with BBC iplayer for streaming when at home since your in France. Watch about 30 minutes with power saver enabled. You should get about 5% drain at most for the 30 minute test. If you are doing that, I would think the Data connection would be your primary issue with power drain. A way you can boost battery while watching video when traveling, you can purchase an external rechargeable battery. Both Data and GPS will suck the power right out of your device much faster than WIFI and there are a few battery calibration apps that use GPS to quick discharge for faster calibration.

I've seen a change recently, because the battery lasts much shorter now than only a few weeks ago. I suspect it could have to do with having run the battery too low (below 20%) a couple of times, specially with my kid playing games or watching Youtube on it. 49% of consumption is the screen, 27% is Android OS, Skype 11%. I haven't installed any new apps in that tim, although I updated Skype to a well functioning version (4.6.0.42007), but with it consuming 11% of total energy, I doubt that being the culprit. I haven't change the energy conservation setting (it's turned off), so it's not that either. On the other hand I turned on Playstore apps updating recently, and that might have something to do with it.
Today the Note even went dead, I didn't notice any battery alert. Is there a way to turn a SOUND on for this. Can't seem to find it. However, the Samsung UI keeps making little ringing noises with every received mail, right up to the device shutting off (sound on message alert is turned off). Any way to turn that off?

Ah, wow! I always have my screen much higher than any app with battery consumption. I use Dolphin browser for Youtube video while browsing with flash enabled and flash.apk installed as well. I prefer the youtube app for links to youtube from emails.
As for sound, it depends on the app that sends notifications. I just block the device most of the time. Though google has options to use default notifications sometimes it can get confused when you set your devices notifications to silent. Then you must change googles notification to silent as well. I think you do that in language and input in one of the google settings for TTS or Voice. It is really a pain but then again that is why I just block and leave things be. Block is in the Notification panel. you can open the complete switch panel by choosing the squares in the upper right.

When your device hit 100%, unplug your device, turn it off and put it into the power socket. Does it say the charge is 100% or does it take another half an hour before it say 100%?
If that's the case you have a battery calibration problem. The software thinks it's fully charged when the battery is only half charged.

I am sorry to say this... but I have had my own issues with power, and that is why I made a thread about such issues.
What you describe is almost what all OEM Note 8.0 devices do. It will show charging again once you have reconnected power after charging.
It has nothing to do with calibration needed to the battery. I have done this many times with Stock and Civato's ROM. If you do not want the issue with Touchwiz DVFS, download an app to disable it. Then you will not see that sort of issue any more. I do not recommend using tools of any sort to circumvent normal operation, but many have disabled DVFS without ill effects so they have a more accurate view of charge capacity.
Nobody here, including me can tell you what is going on directly with your battery without seeing critical information. If anything post the top battery eaters before you charge. This way we can see what is happening. For the most part media seems to be the issue. As google music player will run in background as Media Server no matter how many times you reboot it will try to re index media files over and over. I froze my Google Music player so the issue is non-existent
Another issue is USB charging cables. Samsung cables are not that good. I moved on to Sony / Nokia cables as they are superior cables and a wee longer to boot.

Thank you for the reply. Regarding sound, I thought it was Samsung's @mail inbox app, but it was Microsoft's Exchange. So that is now on silent. Didn't have any effect (!). Under Settings --> Personal --> Google, sound is also set to silent (!!).
Under Language I found Language, Keyboard, Speech and Mouse pointer, and sound for key press could be disabled (it already was).
The Unit's system sounds for ringing and messages have been on silent the whole time (!!!). Still not getting rid of it.
The low energy alert, I don't know whether that is Google or Samsung's Touchwiz. I have sound (I would like to get an auditory warning)? If so, where would that be? It seems I've been through all the settings, but since I haven't been able to turn off the sound alert for incoming mail, or turn off the auditory alarm for low energy, there probably are other settings I've missed.
Come to think of it, this subject would probably would go better under a different thread.

Just search on google play for DVFS... you will need to be rooted.... I like saferoot.zip, and to install xposed framework. Most gamers prefer to disable, but it does wonders for true battery reading and charging.

7 hour battery life

I've had my M8 for 6 months now and just did a factory reset to improve performance but the battery is still bad for me. I start at full at 8am and my phone is dead by 4pm with normal usage, about 7 hours total. No apps seem to be hogging battery. Android, the default processes, and the screen take up most of the power.

I'm also suspecting that a app could be the cause of it but I highly doubt so. There's a possibility that your device packs with a faulty battery to begin with

Mine was bad too, I uninstalled every unneeded app, screen brightness never goes more than 40, battery saving mode on all the time, wifi bluetooth GPS etc on only when I use them, greenify quite a few apps too and all ads are blocked. I also wiped battery status and let battery has a fresh start. I don't play games, only use it for music, web browsing, emails, social networking; I am a medium user.
My phone can go from morning to midnight with one charge and that's all I need.

WiFi, Bluetooth and the such use little battery, at least according to GSAM. GSAM also doesn't say any app is hogging battery.

I'll try that. My brightness is already set low with Lux and I only use my phone for Web browsing/social media. Unfortunately I can't root on 4.4.4 right now so I'm limited in what I can do.

With Lux, you are using auto brightness, which is always going to be an extra battery drain as the light sensor is being constantly polled. Ditch auto brightness, and just manually set it with auto "off" for best battery.

Battery Drain Advice

Hi All
Disclaimer: I'm new to the forum so apologies if this is in the wrong discussion area etc!
I got my Galaxy S9 on Friday 9th, prior to that I had an LG G5 which is now gone. In the last few months of using my LG G5 the battery life was questionable - the phone would get hot (sometimes without even using it a lot) and the battery would drain by 30% an hour. I noticed, but didn't test fully, that Google Play Music seemed to really cane the battery and phone - i.e. was getting hot and draining quickly. As an example, I'd leave home at 7am taking it off charge at the last minute (100%) and get to my office at 9am and it'll be at 50% and very warm. Prior to that (can't exactly pinpoint when the drain started to really kick in) it would only drop to 85% - much more acceptable.
The G5 has a replaceable battery - 2800 if I recall . So I threw down £50 on an official LG site for a new slab of Lithium - slight improvement, but still terrible and warm. 55% instead of 50%.
"Right - time for a new phone" as I assumed that 2 years of app updates meant the CPU was lagging. Bagged a Galaxy S9 - today was my first commute into the office. Started on 100%, arrived at 55% with a 3000 battery! And it got super warm like the G5.
Most of that time I used Google Play Music, which according to AccuBattery the discharge speed was "33% per hour". Second was Google Chrome at 30% per hour (though I didn't use it much at all on the journey).
My question is - what logs can I check, or apps I can use, or something to find out what's going on? I need to test a few things of course to pinpoint the issue. If it helps - I restored from my G5 when I setup my S9.

seems like you might have have some options enabled in Google Play Music / chrome - that is keeping the phone awake
generally when you switch phones they apps and their settings get transferred automatically now - worth maybe uninstalling them for a day and see if you're still experiencing this issue
other than that it could be that your commute involves travelling thru areas of no signal where the phone keeps trying to find a signal - that can drain battery a lot

Thanks - I'll try that next time. Might also try a factory reset but not restore from the LG G5 backup to see what happens then.

how bright is your display? do you leave it on all your commute?
Got your wifi enabled which hunts for a signal even though you aren't using wifi? try turning it off. Same with location setting.

And how strong a signal do you have on your commute. Streaming lots of data on a really weak signal will kill battery, too.

Go into settings and see whats draining your battery.

I could resolve the Battery drain issue but not touching any other setting of the new phone by just disabling the backend data usage of all application expect few like Edge screen, Gmail, Flipboard etc... Now the android system power usage is back to 4-5%. Previously it was 21%-25%. So issue resolved. Need to find out the way to inform this to Samsung so they can identify which app is consuming full battery power.

Hi, i'm facing ridiculous drains too and factory resetting hasn't seemed to help. I'm trying your resolution, but I don't entirely understand you. Could you kindly guide step by step? also, if you mean going to optimise battery usage, when i go there and select the 'apps not optimized' all the apps there are greyed out therefore not allowing me to select them.
